>>
>>78469383
I think it has a nice simplistic artstyle.

I mean, its not amazing. But it's nice to look at.
>>
>>78469383
I can see where you're coming from, friend, however, I feel the art style is somewhat esoteric.

The simplistic style and neutral colors gives the tone of this comic something of a surreal and dreamlike tone, which really tends to support the narrative pretty well, as the first three pages seem to be focused on dreams.

I'm also looking forward to see more of this work.

>>
>>78471538
No, you're fighting for people to respond to every single comic posted when there are many people in these threads who are only interested in a couple of the comics this thread regularly sees.
>>
>>78471590
No. That's what the other anon was fighting for. I was fighting for people responding to this guy: >>78466880

This is what I find absurd about poking around in the dark, assuming which anon is which.

You have nothing to go on. But people have to take the time to tell you you're an idiot, and most of them don't. So you do it a lot with no consequence. Well good for you. You cunt.

>>78471173
What's wrong with you guys? I was just suggesting an activity. There was nothing going on in this thread.

I didn't say you have to do it. Why is everyone here so sensitive that someone might say SOMETHING bad about a comic?

Are you guys webcomic writers or artists who don't want your work judged? Not even judged, it was just an opinion activity.
>>
>>78472106
Nah but didn't you hear?

You're me. YOU'RE ME. FROM YESTERDAY.

SHAME ON YOU, ME
>>
>>78472106
Sorry anon, there was another guy the other day who was saying pretty much the same thing, but was rather... aggressive about it.

It's not that anyone is afraid anyone is going to have something bad be said about their webcomic. Its just that that suggestion goes against the nature of what a 4chan thread is.

4chan is pretty much a sort of organized chaos. People come here and discuss things at their own pace, so when someone comes along and tries to dictate what people "should" and "shouldn't" do, it kind of rubs people the wrong way. Thats just the way 4chan operates.

>>
>>78475126
I was out of practice. Happens when you don't really draw or make comics for months at a time.
>>
>>78474740
Stop with the chicken scratches. You want long, straight lines. The the whole thing in one go. You might, if you're sketching, draw several lines over the top of each other until you get a good one, or an approximation of a good one. A lot of beginners see a professional quality sketch, and make the mistake of thinking that's what they're doing when they make short little chicken scratches. Top doing that though.

Also, let now that you'e gone digitial, the most important thing is to have your left pinky finger on the ctrl key, and the left ring finger on the z. When you're inking, you might end up undoing ten bad lines for every good one. It's the magic of digital.
>>
>>78474819
Do you have anything in mind for panel 4? Because I picture Mimi exiting the stall with a smoldering crater in her wake in that panel.

>>78475684

Anon's just trying to say, lots of artists get into the habit of making really chickenscratchy sketches. Hell, I'M still trying to get out of that habit. Once you've been doing it for years and years like I have, it's really hard to get out of the habit.

This is what I've been using. http://drawabox.com/lesson/1

>>
>>78476208
I'm a webcomic artist, what did you expect?
Some weeks are good, some aren't, it all depends on how many commissions I get.
>>
>>78475363
The sketches just act as a rough guide for the inks, they don't have to be ultra-precise.
>>
>>78476520
This. or especially for proportioning, perspective, and placement.
but that advice does fully apply to inking. a lot of artists ink too sketchily, and very few can pull it off. too often we have the instinct to do things carefully and precisely and incrementally, but inking never looks good that way. so it's important to remember.

Think of it like how horror movies like to think about halloween. "The wall between the spirit and human realm is thinned" and all that. I should clarify, her portal doesn't connect to hell. I should also clarify, she is a monster all the time, she just doesn't have massive amounts of tentacles coming from her mid section all the time. Just one named Charles that's nice. The not nice tentacles usually carry spatulas.
>>
>>78477362
I'd like to see her cooking something.
>>
>>78477362
Actually now that you mention it I wasn't quite clear on whether there was supposed to be several tentacles coming out of the stall up in >>78476677 or just one tentacle wriggling all over (like, maybe Charles was using a spatula/fly swatter to help her smack some unseen thing that was trying to escape) - and if there were several tentacles, I wasn't sure if they were different creatures or just more parts of Charles. Maybe make the different tentacles look different to make sure there's no way to make that mistake?

>>78477429
Calamari. Sometimes you gotta teach those tentacles who's boss.
>>
>>78477456
There will be a color difference between these other tentacles and Charles. Maybe I'll give Charles a dapper little hat just to be sure and these guys will be different colors.

You forget, anon. Most of the demographic here is 18-35, and for the most part the people who go to this thread are likely art students of one degree or another. So of course they are taught that Michelangelo is one of the classical greats.

Your paradigm here is likely more fitting in the company of art professors and historians. While I agree no one is immune to scrutiny, be aware of your audience.
>>
>>78479214
You can't really approach a historical artist without an understanding of their context, anon - even though they're kinda silly from a modern perspective, criticizing Michelangelo for his female anatomy is like criticizing Hokusai for not using a tablet.
>>
>>78479325
Idk man, when I went to art school and we spoke about him we laughed at the man boobs. I mean, it was illegal to have female nude models or something but like, damn, did he never see a woman before? Dude had to know he messed up.
>>
>>78479369
Haha, I'll give you that, and I'll have to admit everything after the Greeks in Art History bored me, so I didn't pay much attention.

But also don't forget Da Vinci and Michelangelo were alive at the same time, so even though Da Vinci brought a greater understanding of anatomy to the world, it was still a fledgling thing.

Then again, I'm the one who slept through half of Art History, so I could be wrong on some things.
>>
>>78479469

Forgot to give context to this.
For example, look at these cave paintings.
Jeez, don't these guys known how to draw woman?
I mean come on.
My point here being that there was not much of a pretext to "properly" drawing a woman. At least not to my knowledge.

>>78479494
Da Vinci did a ton of illegal things. Thats what makes him all the more bad ass.
>>
Used to make comics during class in high school. Silly comedy comic about three dumb ducks that work in an office. Shame that I lost these short comics when I moved out of my moms house.

Either way, I have a ton of comic idea's and worked out... in my head not on paper. There are two idea's that I really want to work out on paper, both are pretty deppresive with psychological themes.

In short, the first idea is about a retired hit man who lost both his wife and daughter. He can't accept the fact that his wife and daughter are both dead what leads to him becoming mentally unstable. He supresses the fact that his family died and starts seeing them. His wife tells him to kill the ones that made her and their daughter suffer. So the mercenary dusts off his gear and the game of vengeance begins. But his mental health falls further to the point it's not just about vengeance or profession anymore but madness.

The second idea I really need to work out on paper first to make it explainable. But I think it's rather novel material than comic material due the heavy subjects.
>>
>>78479516
If you can't tell that its a woman, you didn't draw a woman right. Unless the artist has a different intention of course.
>>
>>78479325

>>
>>78480292
Please illuminate me, this is news to me.
>>
>>78480317
That was one of his most popular comics. It was everywhere. A white supremacist goes on vacation to other countries and learns about the cultures and then he's not racist anymore. I can't speak for everyone but considering the racism in my family was only made worse by spending time with people not of our race, I can't agree with how he seems to think that will work.
>>
>>78480380
He's got a point that racism stems from ignorance.

Sorry your family's a bunch of cunts though.
>>
>>78480292
>>78480380

Oh wait, are you talking about the one comic with the guy who's a klansman, travels the world, learns about their cultures and comes back a changed person?

I think you misunderstand the point of the comic. The character is a representation of a close-minded person (case in point, a white supremacist)
It is only after the man travels the world and comes to LEARN about different cultures that he understands the value in them all, and learns to broaden his horizons.
The white supremacist is representative of a close-minded person.

I'm guessing I'm bound to get a lot of shit for defending what is apparently a controversial comic. I honestly thought the point of the comic was clear enough.
>>
>>78480489
It stems from ignorance AS WELL AS life experience ie. bad experiences with a people of a certain race. My family, myself included, has had constant bad experiences with a certain group of people and while I try to put my experiences behind me, my family holds grudges.
>>
>>78480529
If you think close minded people are so easy to change their opinion, even with education, you have a brand of optimism I wish I could duplicate and sell.

Mimi looks like a fun, twisted, eldrychian twist on those kinds of comics.

Truth be told, Mimi was me being very annoyed with those people that always seem to have a snappy comeback to anyone that says anything to them. Someone says something to Mimi and she just continues with her life. She doesn't shove it to the man, she does what makes her happy.

Anyhow, thanks for your kind words! Good luck!

You can't tell where someone's at in their art journey, man. Some people just started drawing this year, three years ago, ten years ago maybe. I don't think a lot of people in these threads have been drawing or even pursuing art seriously their entire lives. I think it's a pretty harsh thing to say "oh you're all content with poor quality". You can't tell where they are, where they have improved from.

I looked back at my yearly art summaries from two years ago and I was shocked at how much I improved in just that short amount of time. That's the same for pretty much everyone else, too, you don't really see the improvement or overall growth in one image. Am I rambly? I feel rambly.

Well I just started in on this a bit over a month ago. A webcomic's been something I wanted to try for years, finally mustered up the gumption to take a shot at it and try to stick to a schedule.

Still trying to figgure a lot out, not least of which page layout and panel composition. I'm not super jazzed with hosting on Tumblr, I should look into something else, or just getting better with using what I have.

Anyway. Pic related is one of the more recent and better pages, I think. Link goes to starting page permalink.

Thank you, glad I'm still messing around with the medium (had no idea I'd be doing 100+ pages of this series).

Thank you, doing spotted blacks on the following page right now! It's one of those pages I've wanted to get to for a loooong time.
>>
>>78486475
You figured it out. It's just something I picked up from Jeff Smith a couple years ago. There are a few reasons I tend to prefer doing it this way...

1. I tend to be a bad judge of the proper size t give a word balloon for the amount of dialogue needed at times, even with writing it out on the page (particularly if things get a tad dialogue heavy). This helps me get the sizing right, and can count for a lot when I need the space.
2. I like not having to think about typing all the words out after scanning the page. Especially if I'm working with black and white, I want everything after the actual drawing to be quick so I can get it out.
3. I just like how it makes the actual original art readable in the same way as the final picture.

I can see why others wouldn't bother though. I found out later that this is a common practice in manga too, with the editors themselves pasting the typed dialogue in on the pages.

Instead of doing other character sheets, I decided to try drawing a short instead to get used to Manga Studio 5. Oh boy, was it a good idea. Even rough sketches/layouts of pages (pic related) take a considerable amount of time; after finishing the whole thing I'll have to count how much it took and probably seriously reconsider the scope of the main comic I wanted to draw.

>>78486788
This is pretty smart! I wouldn't think about it since I was always typing the text in by hand. I can easily imagine drawing text bubbles too big and slow. I thought comic artists working with traditional media don't draw bubbles on the page at all and only add them digitally after scanning.

just shows how ignorant you are - androgyny was in then. the male body was considered the only canon body, and women's bodies were merely imperfect versions of it (this goes back to the Adam and Eve dichotomy.) As a result, the folks considered most ideal in their appearance were feminine men and manly women (a reverse example is in The Da Vinci Code when they talk about da Vinci's John the Evangelist "really" being Mary Magdalene.)

I'm speaking to the ones who I can tell take it a little more seriously than doodles. For example,I wouldn't really get into >>78479821 's grill about this because that art seems pretty serviceable for what he's after.

But in the case of >>78482782 's work- and I'm just selecting this one at random- I can see very obvious skew-y looking errors, easily remedied by constantly flipping the view during work on it.

I hate to be all gloom about this though. I just want to let people there is an audience waiting to appreciate a greater level of effort.

Of course, I'm not saying people should just be complacent. I'm just saying you can't expect the same level of quality here as you would someone who does webcomics for a living.
That said, if people are going to post here they should expect to get criticism; I don't care if it's "mean", but if people are going to give you their honest opinion and you WANT to improve then nothing is gained by just ignoring them.

>>78487837
I personally treat it a *bit* more like work in that I set a time asside every day for me to work on it (say, one hour after I get back from work, one hour after dinner, for example).
What personally helped me a lot was giving myself a time limit of how much I was allowed to work on certain aspects (for example: max 4 hours on pencils), so that I'm not contantly going back and ficking things.
Of course, unexpected things can always happen during the day that will throw your whole scedule out through the window.

Yup - partly for the aesthetic, partly because I didn't get a tablet until the beginning of 2012. I love those artists you named and folks like Clowes and Ware, but I can't ink as well as any you guys! I also really like the look of watercolor, like in Simon Hanselmann or Noah Van Sciver's stuff. I sincerely hope nobody in these threads are actually expecting to make it in webcomics, the existing competition is already really stiff out there. New webcomics need to be more than just good to break through and I see nothing here that even comes close to being good.

>the existing competition is already really stiff out there. New webcomics need to be more than just good

>>78488372
Man don't try to make webcomics seem that different from anything else.

The same is true of video games, movies, books, etc.

What you just said, is true of ALL ENTERTAINMENT. We, as webcomickers, are not special. Do not dream of calling us special.

There is a method to this madness. And it isn't as new as the medium.

There's so many examples of objectively weak work making super money because it has the right appeal, hits at the right time, etc. 50 Shades of Grey is literally a Twilight fanfiction with edited names that was a bestseller and made into a movie. Twilight was not very strong from a literary standpoint either, but it's very popular and profitable. There are plenty of webcomics out here that are very popular and profitable, but barely function as well-crafted art objects.
>>
>>78488483

>>
>>78488638
>There are plenty of webcomics out here that are very popular and profitable, but barely function as well-crafted art objects
But they all have SOMETHING that one can point out as a reason why they're so popular and profitable. Take QC as an example: it's a lousy comic in every way but it's also every comfy inoffensive sitcom personafied and masses eat that shit up.
The comics in these threads are just lousy with no feature or "thing" that could make them popular despite the lack of quality.
>>
>>78486943
Well this is my 100th comic, which is a huge milestone for me. So I wanted to give something nice back to my readers.

The comic I have here talks about the artistic journey, and is going to be referring to the character as "you," as in the protagonist of this comic is the reader. So instead of myself, I'm using a protagonist that the reader can (hopefully) imprint on.
>>
>>78488701
I can agree with most of that - except I think that there are a few comics here that have "break through" potential even if most of them don't.

A page from my webcomic: oasis

Question, if your working with a writer friend and doing the art how do you all handle encountering situations that your inexperienced with as an artist (drawing animals/cars/complex geography) I'm at such a situation and am trying to bone up but obviously page schedual gets pushed back due to inexperiance.

Also do you think there is a place for adlib between artist and writer? The pic included is an example of me throwing in some jokes.

I just want to say that I think you all are doing great work in your own personal way. The amount of money or readers aren't good ways to measure success or the quality of your work, as even negative guy here said a lot of popular webcomics are really pure shit, and most of the regulars here are doing just as good stuff as them, just with less pandering.
>>
>>78490759

>>
>>78490783
Hehehehe, I chuckled. He seems to be a stress-narcoleptic.
Just be honest with the writer, chances are writers are more worldly and better at telling you exactly what to observe to get the look down. I doubt he'll ever get mad at you for pestering him for too many details, and if you have a discussion and he says he's okay with letting you just do your best, then stop worrying. obviously that guy doesn't care as much about the cars or geography.
as for ad-libbing, hell yeah, as long as it doesn't push the schedule back any further. But run it past your writer for proofreading because your spelling is pretty bad, guy. In this post at least. Not in that comic
>>

>better keep your hopes of success low because none of you has what it takes to be any good
>hey anon, being no good doesn't prevent success
>well none of you has what it takes to get success despite lack of being good either
that last statement is, by its nature, asserting "i know what "it" is, and you don't have "it" it being what it takes to be successful with people who have shitty taste. Saying you know what that is is kind of a self-insult

Make sure that your update schedule has room for error. Like, if you figure you can probably do one page every other day if you work your hardest and don't mess anything up, don't update more than once every three days.

Also, get a buffer. The bigger, the better. When you have a buffer, you have waay more flexibility to figure out things you're unfamiliar with.

>do you think there is a place for adlib between artist and writer?
It depends on the two of you, but generally, yeah, both should feel comfortable pitching ideas at each other. Don't just throw stuff in without running it by your writer first, though.

I can appreciate you'd name comics you'd consider the best, but I can already tell you what's going on to happen.

You're talking to an unreasonable, haughty person. And he's going to make any rationalization to cover his ass. There is nothing a guy this angry won't say. -All despite being anonymous, where he has no lingering reputation to gain or lose.

It doesn't make sense to me either, but I've seen it a million times to know what the genesis looks like.

Just leave already, we usually have a really nice constructive athmosphere going on here. I don't understand what you gain from trying to push people down.

>>
>>78491157
I've seen the good ones and most of the kinda bad ones before, the shitty ones didn't need more than a glance to see just how low the quality was.

You can't disprove that the quality of comics posted in these threads is bad no matter how hard you try because it's the truth.
>>
>>78491240
No no. What did you look at? Of each comic. Show us pages.
>>

I'd be happy with just making 2000 a month on Patreon. Currently barely making 100, while Buckley gets almost 4000$. FML.

Are you really this desperate? It's okay to be a failure sometimes.
>>
>>78491240
Christ, you really have no idea about the artists that post in this thread, do you? You know you're doing the equivalent of walking into a public area and yelling at a mixed group of students and professionals that they're not up to par with your tastes? You're walking up to people who want to improve and going, "Oh, what's this shit, you're LEARNING how to draw and you're not a master of your craft yet? Well, good fucking luck ever trying to be quality!"

Seconding the request for you to post your art.
>>
>>78491272
Don't listen at him, your comic is amazing as far as I'm concerned!
>>
>>78491279
Really wish people would stop bringing up Buckley and QC and the gang.

It's really foolhardy to bring these things up like relatively normal cases. They kinda got in on the internet back when it was the wild wild west.

In my opinion, and I think it's a pretty solid opinion, it's all about the amount of time you've been around, being consistent. To become a part of people's routine.

These cases of (hack) creators making bank certainly did.
>>
>>78491301
I'm just cornering you into saying something outlandish like this.

An honest person doesn't have to remember anything. When you press them, their responses still sound rather natural.

And there's something unnatural about the way you're quipping me right now.

I try not to use the word 'troll' because the internet's beaten it ten times to death, but hey. If the shoe fits.
>>
>>78491240
The average comic posted in these threads is better than the average "top" webcomic out there, m8.
>>
>>78491341
Exactly what I was going to say. They've been around forever. Most people doing webcomics today are using them as a vehicle to get into the (non-web)comics industry, at least it seems that way in my experience with webcomics artists.
>>
>>78491324
You don't even know who your talking to.
>>
>>78491272
maybe stop giving the obvious troll more attention
>>
>>78491405
I don't see it that way.

What you're suggesting I do, or rather not do, just postpones the problem.

This guy isn't a troll in the Bones sense. Him, you really better not reply to. I'm not getting that feeling from this guy. He's just more of a dirtbutt.
>>
>>78491382
Really? Would any comic posted here measure up to Blindsprings, Ava's Demon or Paranatural? You can't even claim they're popular because they're old guard comics, each of them are less than a few years old.
They're the kind of quality that you're up against, and I see nothing here that comes even close.
>>
>>78491476
Sounds like someone doesn't remember what Paranatural looked like when it started, huh.
>>
>>78491466
There's no "problem" to postpone. If you stop arguing with him and trying to futilely convince him that those comics are good you just give him more fuel to keep going. Ignore him and he can do nothing but throw random insults around until he gets bored and goes back to his cape comics and "good" webcomics.
>>
>>78491476
The anon you're replying to, I wouldn't say is right either.

But you. You're arguing for the popularity threshold meter, in the right here and now, being the only to measure everything.

Ava's Demon had Homestuck ties. Paranatural is older than you're conceding. Blindsprings got into Hiveworks early.

No two cases of success are exactly the same. Don't be silly.
>>
>>78491535
> If you stop arguing with him and trying to futilely convince him that those comics are good
Hold it.

I'm not trying to do that, I'm trying to get him to expound on his own declarations. And if he won't, it's pretty easy to get outsiders to brush him away as a dickweed.

The point is that it improved and incredible amount incredibly fast. And the writing was pure gold from the start.

Are you seriously suggesting paranatural was ever as bad as the stuff here?
>>
>>78491544
>Ava's Demon had Homestuck ties. Paranatural is older than you're conceding. Blindsprings got into Hiveworks early.
Right, that's the only reaseons these comics are popular while no one here has any readers. There is zero difference in quality, nuh-uh.
>>

>>

Meaning you admit it was low quality at one point then got better. Wow! I wonder what else that could possibly apply to.
>>
>>78491608
Blindsprings, Ava's Demon and Paranatural are all easily beat by many creators here, you're only under the rose-tinted illusion that they're somehow better because they're already popular.

Try again, what other "good" webcomics do you think are so superior to our works?
>>
>>78491652
I'm the other guy he's been arguing with, and at this point I'd say we should both just let him sputter out at this point.

It's very clear he's not going to be fair about where he hides the goalpost next.
>>
>>78491476
Those comics are all visually and stylistically pretty similar - are you sure you're not just conflating your personal taste with what's objectively good? There are successful webcomics artists like KC Green, Kate Beaton, Ryan Pequin, Abby Howard, etc, who utilize a less painterly/rendered and more cartoony style and are very successful in webcomics.
>>
>>78491658
He's implying that none of us can or will ever be able to write or draw because we're going to be low quality forever, which is fucking nonsense.
>>
>>78491466
Indeed, in these threads we're used to very obvious blatant inflammatory trolls. This is the "improv game" kind of troll. One who gives just enough falseness to urge you to correct him. We could actually learn a lot by analyzing him, like how to write lines that stimulate the reader to think things and reexamine what they believe...
But he's clearly just doing it to stir the pot. No amount of proof we offer will silence him.
>>
>>78491476
>Would any comic posted here measure up to Blindsprings, Ava's Demon or Paranatural?
Yes. You really just proved that you didn't actually look at the posted list of our roster.

>>78491476
I actually got Blindsprings from an early one of these threads (someone just linked it). I liked it for a while but it got boring like many pretty comics do.
Ava's Demon person posted the new comic (the one with the creepy allpowerful girl running the world) here first, so.. that's one of us mate.
>>
>>78491698
Man what does it matter if one guy doesn't like so and so's comic. This is getting tiresome and white-knighty
>>

>There are successful webcomics artists like KC Green, Kate Beaton, Ryan Pequin, Abby Howard, etc, who utilize a less painterly/rendered and more cartoony style and are very successful in webcomics.
And I've read most of these and I have to say, about 90% of the comics posted here are just as good if not better than these examples. It's really just luck and timing to get you into the spotlight. KC Green and Kate Beaton started during the ancient ages of webcomics, Abby Howard only got known through Strip Search. If we were given the same luck we'd be right up there with them.

Dewd is an embarrassment to these threads.

And when you check his next page, he has applied nothing of what you just said.

Yes well that's my point. He's not deterred. Skill level or quality wasn't implied.
>>
>>78491805
No. All of those things are older than the HYW threads.

Kill 6 Billion Demons, I first saw in a Batman thread.

But I urge no one to care about where the webcomics came from. This place hasn't been in the best of shape lately. I feel like I've seen the limit of what an anonymous forum can do for creators and it's a little depressing.

>>78491805
I don't know, but Poppy O'Possum and Prequel are definitely comics that were created here, so there definitely isn't a lack of successful creators spawning from our little group. I don't mean an update schedule, I mean a work schedule. Like, "I'm gonna draw for two hours today" (14 hours of work a week is about the point where I'd be comfortably getting things on track). I briefly had a buffer of like a month back in spring, but I fell behind when I got distracted by some other things.
>>
>>78491900
It can offer saucy comments without the commentor censoring themselves. I find that healthy to hear since it's hard to get on your website.

I think too many people try to use the thread as a springboard rather than a place to talk. Some people just come in, dump a link and fuck off.

Yeah 20-30 strips might go by that look the same, but those were done in a few weeks. Watch the progress month to month, it's uncanny
>>
>>78492102
Ava's Demon definitely didn't start here, the author didn't even become aware of /co until the Tumblr drama early this year.
>>

Even Chaos in the Tropics is older.

Fjordson isn't. Sisters isn't.

Set your drawing program, and give it an idle delay of about 20 seconds or so. And then do what you have to do, to get that number to 8 in one day. And after you've acheived that, maybe 9 or 10. And after that, 12 hours doesn't even feel like a stretch.

And once you've hit 12 hours just once, you'll know it's possible. After knowing that, everything gets easier.

What's the true meaning of the word "point" when it comes to font size?

I work with Manga Studio 5. I've got it on two computers, my laptop and desktop. Sometimes I'll start a page on one, and finish it on the other. Same dpi in every new file. The thing is, font sizes seem completely different on either computer, and I'm constantly having to fiddle with them, especially if I'm changing from one computer to the other. I don't think the dpi has anything to do with it, and I thought there must be something I'm misunderstanding fundamentally about font size, but I don't know what.

>>78491182
Sarcasm, but that is a thing on some level. Plus time you've put into it, and when you came into the field. I mean, a lot of the top ones that I'm aware of started when I was younger during the webcomic boom/bubble and they've been able to carry on because some people read out of habit.

And that isn't to say that I consider my stuff better than those items, but I think we've got to concede luck is a factor.

Which is also why >>78491341 makes a good point when we talk about money. I'd be happy making a hundred bucks a month, if only because it'd be nice to have a smidge of cash for emergencies and plus we could do some cool side-comic projects.

But these guys are the exception rather than the rule. Can't get angry you didn't win the lottery, that's a lighting strike in a perfect storm of butterfly wings. Same as a lot of those big earners who I personally think could improve a lot if they took some time off and put in more effort.

Isn't a regular? I'm here more often than I ought to be. I just don't like tossing on a name. Got into 4chan back in like 2009 and namefagging on /tg/ was horribad so the habit stuck.

Or if you meant, "isn't older than blank", that's correct. We launched in May. Made pretty decent gains in less than a year. Got about 200-300 unique readers who come back each week who aren't bots (counting bots, a bit higher). People seem to like the story.

But we're chasing a dragon man. I like the atmosphere around here most of the time. Things can be very productive in here at times, and that's when I try to post.

Isn't older than these threads, yeah.
>>

>And responding to the ass only amuses him.
I'm not convinced. I think that guy was half-trolling.

But aside from that, I don't like this idea that we have to ignore every single human problem like we only make it worse by addressing it.
>>
>>78493279
i may be a chicken, but i'm not a rat. only a douchenozzle COULD, let alone would, list a bunch of comics he hates just to bash them. I don't carry that list around with me, sorry
>>
>>78493322
Very good point, fancy dan. We shouldn't let trolls cause us to start ignoring every problem.. Only those problems which ignoring them solves.
>>
>>78493279
Tee hee, that's good chicken onomatopoeia.
>>
>>78493322
It's not like you're ignoring actual useful criticism. This is just a guy intentionally being vague to get your panties in a bunch.
>>
>>78493395
Maybe you could post your own webcomic, so we can see a good example of what to aspire too?
>>
>>78493395
ok so you could make a general comment that everybody is shit and will never be successful, but now you're not gonna list comics you find to be examples of the shit you were mentioning because you don't "just bash them." i'm with the other person - you're chicken now.
>>
>>78493675
C'mon dude.

You're no better than him by doing this.

Exactly how well do you think it's gonna go? How fair do you imagine people are gonna be now? After the thread we just had.

Obviously, you're just being facetious about it. And that's the last thing the thread needs.
>>
>>78493773
I just want to see 'his' work, anon.

Nothing wrong with that. I mean, clearly he knows is stuff. And surely he has his own webcomic. Why else would he be hanging out in the hyw thread? It couldn't possibly be because he's an attention seeking drama queen.
>>
>>78493827
I do think he's a coward. We both do.

But I'm not gonna be passive aggressive about it. That won't help.
>>
>>78493827
He has no work to show, clearly. Your fighting a pointless battle here, anon.
>>
>>78493103
>your anatomy is completely broken. Fix it. Loomis.
>I don't see what the problem is. Maybe you could redline it for me?
>Fuck you for asking! Just look at how defensive you are! You don't have to be a chef to know shit tastes bad! Dobson!

Every fucking time.
>>
>>78493675
what-to-aspire-to is not being a douche. that's about 17^259 times more important than having a good webcomic
>>
>>78493896
I've never seen someone ask for a redline and not get it.

It's rarely asked for to begin with.
>>
>>78493704
Not only do I not, I can not. Not without wasting a ton of time sitting and carefully pondering. I'm not ready to answer that question off the cuff, and I posit that anyone who is has a major personality problem. I'm busy doing constructive shit right now.
>>
>>78493878
I'm not sure if you know what passive aggressive means, anon.

I'm certainly being rhetorical. But being passive aggressive would mean, for example, bitching about everybody else's work then becoming a pussy when asking for specifics.
>>
>>78493954
Pay attention, it happens often.
>>78493970
er no, what you're describing is hypocrisy, possibly with a touch of manic depression
what the anon identified as passive aggression is dead on. he's making what looks like a normal passive statement but which clearly has undertones of challenge
>>
>>78493992
I've always gotten redlines when I asked for it. Truth me told, I've always found the threads very helpful. You get a dick shitting it up from time to time of course but I've found the more genuine people here to be really helpful and it's one of the big reasons I decided to make art again.
>>
>>78493992
It's neither passive, nor aggressive. It's standard socratic questioning.

>>78494038
It depends on who you ask. If you ask somebody who knows what they're talking about, they'll give you a redline and it will usually be very helpful. If it's a troll who's just talking shit, they'll run away and pretend you're the one with the problem. I've seen both in these threads.
>>
>>78494182
Oh come on, you know the second instances don't count. They're about as legit as the guy everyone is arguing with here.
I told you guys to just get back to work because this guy is here to do nothing but be a discouraging distraction.

It's OK.

So my friend said something to me today that I hope might be of use to some of you here.

Art takes a lot of personal growth. Personal growth is like planting a seed. You see, first, we dig a hole and we put the seed in the hole (so we're already off to a bad start). Then, to make matters worse, we cover that seed with dirt, and sometimes we even cover it with SHIT. And then we water it, so this seed has a ton of rainy days.
So, after being put in a hole, covered with dirt and shit (not even your shit, this is someone else's shit, probably a cow's shit.) rained on for days and days on end, the seed does something amazing. It grows, it breaches the surface, and it emerges as a completely transformed entity. It pushes past all the dirt and shit and rocks, and it puts it s roots in them, it uses them as a foundation for its growth. It pushes forward, and it reaches skywards.
But.... If it hadn't gone through all the trouble of growing, it would have remained in the ground, in a coffin it made for itself because it never wanted to grow and become the flower it wanted to be.
>>
>>78494336
That's okay anon. I wasn't mentioned either. After all, it is only the opinion of one anon.

You're posting on a 4chan thread... very constructive. If you've been here enough to see what's strong and what isn't, then you really shouldn't have a problem jotting down the titles of what seemed weakest. Don't start this stupid shit if you aren't prepared to finish it.

That;s fair anon. You seem a reasonable person to me in this particular engagement.
However, for the sake of bringing this thread's levels of hostility down, allow me to remind you of Mark Twain's great quote;
"Never argue with an idiot, for they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience."

Arguably, I'm not calling anyone here an idiot, but I feel like you may have certain opinions on some anons, and I feel this might be more relatable to your perspective.

Look at the things that got talked about. Tell me it's not on topic.
>>
>>78495311
The thread title didn't have a pound sign before the thread number. To me, that's a bust.

It also didn't have a question mark after "How's Your Webcomic" which makes it a double bust.
>>
>>78495424
Oh you just meant the schmuckjob of the thread creation itself.

Yes I agree.

Hopefully the next person doesn't FUCK IT UP.

i just thought of something also useful on the toilet, about self-inserts, and why i don't do them, and about author surrogates, and why we SHOULD do them
if you're a halfway decent person, then you're probably boring. in a horror movie you would leave and call the police. in an adventure you would go home and read a book about it.. but you're making fiction BECAUSE you don't have an exciting life. So.. when you make that fiction, by all means design characters who get to do all the shit you ever wanted to do. THEN ask yourself WHY you never do those things (common sense, inhibition, a comfortable life) and remove those from the characters so they now have flaws. which isn't to say you can't beef them up too, one of the reasons you don't fight monsters is you're weak. you can remove that too.
>>
>>78494359

It seems to me that he says it looks ugly because it's exaggerated and simple. When really everything is pretty perfectly exaggerated so that forms are conveyed well and the anatomy is sound. That artist knows how to convey something very well with a simple art style and the style is unique as well.
>>
>>78496406
>>78469383
>>78467004

It seems more as an experimentation into visual story telling than for the actual "art sake" wise notation for this particular artist's stylistic choices. I think it can be something quite unique and different if this artist continues, but yes, in an artistic sense, it has little to no merit, on a visual story telling level though, I would like to see what this artist-anon will produce, if this anon-artist plays their cards right, it can be something very enjoyable and powerful depending on how they work the visuals and story.

Reminds me of the artist who drew the "Hellboy" series.

But, at times, I am not sure what I am looking at, at first glance, the top panel btw, is rather weak compared to the other 2 lower panels, it looks empty and does not flow well with the other two.
