Would anyone be surprised if it turned out that Ben was actually Luke's son? We learn that Luke sensed there was too much Vader in him and didn't want him to grow up with the Force, figured he'd be better raised by Leia as a diplomat/senator whatever doing good in the galaxy and thinking of others. They try it out and Ben is just too much to deal with, too much darkness, so they decide his place is with his real father - leading to the shitstorm that made Luke run away from the rest of the galaxy.

I would've bet on Chewie next because of Peter Mayhew, but given that they've hired a second actor who does all of the action scenes and seems to be working as an understudy, I could see Chewie sticking around. He's too popular for them to kill off.

You could argue the same about Han but let's face it, Harrison Ford didn't want to keep doing this and there isn't exactly a "Harrison Ford understudy" that could take over the role.

I think Leia will survive the trilogy. I can agree that if Luke's going to die it'll probably be in 9, when he has nothing left to pass on and Rey comes into her own and passes her big trial, ready to then pass on her knowledge to the next generation.

She did seem to know Obi-Wan by reputation, if not personally, but it still seems like a stretch for her to want to name her son after him. Even if she did, her deciding to call him Ben is even stranger since she mostly knew him as Obi-Wan. The only character who is more familiar with "Ben" than with "Obi-Wan" is Luke, so that name would have meaning to him and it's understandable that he would name his son Ben. With Leia it makes less sense.

Though I like to think he has a stranger first name, and they asked Luke what's a good middle name and he said "Ben." So his full name is something like Thrantarider Ben Solo and Han just went "yeah whatever I'm just gonna call him Ben" and pretty much everyone else agrees, so Leia is the only one who ever calls him Thrantarider.

I've watched the first three episodes and I'm not impressed. Is there a main arc that occurs, or at least a point where the show gets interesting? I was hoping that being a Weissman joint would lend it some emotional depth, but it's fairly childish so far.

I'll let you in on a little secret. See I work at Lucasfilm (can't tell you who I am or they'll throw me in the carbonite chamber) and I've seen some of the preliminary stuff Lucas did for his Ultimate Special Ediiton back before the Prequel Special Editions and theater re-release was shitcanned by Disney.

Turns out there's extended scenes where Darth Vader actually recovers Luke's severed hand. We get a screen wipe and then in an homage scene to Anakin's transformation in ROTS we see Vader saying, "Arise." A mechanized bed shifts from horizontal to vertical revealing Luke's hand now outfitted into Grievous' old cyborg body only with Luke's hand for a head. Vader says, "If my son won't rule by my side, perhaps you will." Slowly the hand clenches into a fist, shaking, and then slowly the middle finger raises. Then the cyborg suit's arms split and they raise their middle fingers too. They didn't have it yet but the script calls for Vader to shout, "YESSSSSSSS!" Then fade to black and credits roll.

people don't care about something because there was a lot of sitting and talking. it's a horrid use of time in a limited format such as film. seriously go watch a sum of all fears, it's a political drama, that's supposed to be behind the scenes of how real government works, it has a total of one senate meeting, and it's made interesting by making it a middle of the night, cloak and dagger senate meeting, and it lasts all of two minuets. you don't care about whats happening because there is a lot of sitting and talking, you care because the story is humanized by well written characters who are in very interesting, or dramatic, settings.

Why not do something like that in TFA? Nobody's asking for big dumb meetings with the space UN like the prequels, just add a minute or two of Leia and some other big wigs going "The First Order's up to some shit and the senate's not looking into it, we gotta put our own group together". Because introducing the new characters and their stories are much more important than that. The Senate stuff is still in the novelization and side material.

So about the politics, even though the movie didn't explain, from what I understand, it's that the Galaxy is essentially in a neutral time.
Some planets have joined the New Republic and many former Imperial planets have chosen to stay neutral.
Membership in the New Republic is not mandatory and there is peace pretty much throughout the Galaxy.
The First Order created itself outside the view of the Republic in the Unknown Territories and is slowly gathering up formerly Neutral Imperial planets.
This isn't strictly illegal to the New Republic, so they're just watching it nervously.
Meanwhile, Leia is taking a proactive approach to stop the First Order with her Resistance, and even though her Resistance has no strict allegiance to the NR, she is receiving hidden support from them, which in turn annoys the First Order who views the Resistance as a violation of their peace with the NR.

The movie had a line about how the New Republic was secretly funding the Resistance, which told us pretty much everything we needed to know for the movie.
That is, the Resistance is not the Republic and that the Republic and the FO are technically at peace (otherwise the funding wouldn't be secret).

After the collapse of the Empire the Separatists pop up again but in a non-retarded, non-Sith way and form a New Confederacy, the Republic, being so weak and being offered a peaceful resolution, accept. I disagree. Season 6 was set up deliberately to have us go through tragedy after tragedy, only to end on a hopeful, if bittersweet note. Yoda's arc was the perfect final sendoff. It was telling us that things are going to get so much worse, but there will always be something to hold onto

Y'know, in Tarkin, the CIS is still around. There are hold-outs who are attacking/resisting the Empire... but generally they are in hiding.

Some of the CIS remnant elements helped the rebellion in the GCW. As per Disney canon.

So it isn't impossible to consider the idea of those planets and remnants wanting to go their own way after the war.

Hell, the Ep-7 book mentioned some planets 'staying neutral' even. So we might see a Confederacy of "neutral" planets.

The movie was great but what ever they do with the franchise they will never capture the same amount of excitement from black Star Wars fans ever again. Point is, we don't know enough. We don't know how ingrained that stuff is to the Jedi doctrine. We don't know how flexible they are. We don't know how much Luke cares.

We don't know why Rey was on Jakku yet either. Did Luke abandon her because she was a mistake? Did he exile himself because he thought she was killed in the massacre? There could be a conflict of interest here that gives Luke flaws, even if the old Jedi method is assumed to be or presented as the correct way of going about things. What if Kylo, at a younger age, was jealous of the even younger Rey's power and connection, and thus Luke blames himself?

We don't know.

Ahsoka is not only a great character, she is also far from a Mary Sue.

Aside from being a little snippy early on, and being lucky enough to be Padawan to the Chosen One, she is fairly average. She fails a shitload of missions, got suspended from battles at times, had her shit stolen, got into all kinds of trouble. She failed incredibly as a Jedi, where she grew as a character.

Rey is more of a Mary Sue. Ahsoka had a shades of that in the first season, but her competency level always was reasonable, even a bit on the low side. I don't think she even managed to defeat another Force-user until Rebels.

At this point we only have maybe IG-88, 4-LOM and maybe Zuckuss and Embo (only by merit of not knowing a Kuzo's lifespan). Dengar would be old as fuck, Boba aught to still be digesting in the Sarlacc, Bossk was on Jabba's sail barge when it blew, so he's probably dead and Filoni hinted at Bane being dead so he wouldn't be in Rebels.

Unless you're talking about the less notable bounty hunters like Sugi, Rumi, Rako, Derrown, Twazzi, Highsinger or Latts.

It's not the most important thing in the franchise, but there are two big things happening in the show; The origins of the Rebel Alliance, and Vaders last connection to Anakin (Ahsoka)

Ahsoka vs Vader is easily going to be one of the most emotional and important battles in the franchise, even if you know how it ends. It's basically a second Anakin vs Obi-Wan.

It's literally to the point where I believe that had Lucas gone through with a Live-Action show instead of TCW, but Ahsoka was still in it, I believe they would have saved the fight for a Anthology movie.

But seeing as she was introduced in a cartoon, she will likely die in one too, but it just means that, IMO, Rebels will have at least one story arc big enough for a movie.
