I don't recall Dipper getting chastised when he left Pacifica to die in Golf War. Also, I'd argue Dipper fucks up much more than Mabel does (Summerween, Scary-oke, Dreamscaperers, Sock Opera, DD+MD etc) because that's an offshoot of his character. He's naturally inquisitive, so he'd create the problems to begin with by pushing fate, while Mabel's flaws ultimately extend from a twisted form of altruism that means she helps people despite not quite being mature enough to know what the situation calls for.

Wow anon, it's almost like that's my entire point. Both are painfully flawed characters, with their own redeeming features. Hell, I don't even get what Dipper was losing out on in Sock Opera; how was Mabel going to help crack the code? Deep End was also the right thing to do by any objective measurement (hmm, life of sentient humanoid, or continue being friend-zoned?).

Your summary of the ending is painfully flawed too. She was tricked into ending bringing Bill about, was in a state of deep emotional trauma after having a whole day of abandonment and crushed dreams, not to mention the most important person in her life packing up on short notice. She ultimately apologises for the fight, says that Dipper can keep the apprenticeship, and Dipper still refuses.

There is nothing uniquely bad about any of this. All of these seem like normal, human flaws.

Ford is a recluse who hoards his research (UFO's, inifinte energy machine), while Dipper is a gloryhunter who wants fame
(Gobblewonker). Dipper would be trapped in a job he doesn't really want, lost his main emotional support, and best friend, and would miss out on the life experiences (love, relationships, growing-up) that he's desperate for, even if his parents would allow any of this.
