At one point she was talking to a publisher about printing the book but that fell apart (due to them being unreasonable if I remember correctly). There always seems to have been an assumption in the community that the swearing edits were related to the potential publisher but I thought Michelle confirmed otherwise later on (or maybe I'm going nuts...)

If I'm remembering correctly it was more to do with what fit the characters. E.g it made Wrathia seem petty/stupid stooping to say 'fuk u ava u fat bitch' and that's not really her character - 'die in a fire ava ire' fits her personality better.

It was for a publisher but MC said she never liked the swearing anyway and only added it to get across that the comic wasn't for kids. She figured that the comic had progressed enough that people knew that now.

I don't agree with it. A lot of dialogue lost it's bite and it wasn't like they were swearing all the time for the sake of it. The really sad thing is it started MC on her epic redraw spree that's taking a lot of her time and frankly messing up the comic's early charm.

That's pretty much on the nose for what Ava's Demon is. A teenage girls wishfulment story. The plot is a sad girl, Ava has no friends or real goals and no one understands her sad pitiful life so she kinda sucks and is sad in space-highschool and shit. But it's okay, because it's actually a demon ghost's fault so she doesn't REALLY suck, she was just held back from reaching her full potential and living a happy life. Once she makes a deal with the ghost-demon-alien that tormented her she's suddenly really important and powerful and can turn into a scary lava breathing demon when she needs to to fight evil space mormons and the goal of her mission as well as the story is for to defeat Space Jesus.

That's the plot summed up for you. If you think that's juvenile, it's only what's offered up and I cannot say anything more.

Also the author came up with the idea for the plot when she was still in highschool, apparently.

They're way exaggerating. There's way more to it than that and it's a lot deeper lore going on than one silly girl going around some depression quest.

The plot IS about making pacts with demons, but trust me it's not what you think. If you just go ahead and read it you'll be pleasantly surprised how beautifully the comic subverts your expectations. It takes it's entire premise on it's head, since it subvert those cliches you're speaking of and shows you making a pact with a demon isn't really a good thing. Altogether the deconstruction it does is just amazing.

The thing is, comics like QC/LICD/etc prove that if you can maintain a regular update schedule people will be willing to put up with mediocrity and keep reading out of habit. I don't mean this with hostility, but I think you're making unjustified assumptions. Ashley knows very well how to expose the setting at the right time and in the right way. The setting is complex and fleshed out, but in no way it is overwrought. I don't really know what you mean with generic apart from the fact it's fantasy and it has magic in it. Said magic follows rules that are deeply rooted in the setting. The dialogue is arguably the most well-thought and well written in webcomics right now.
It doesn't even have pacing problems, because there's always something happening and it updates so often.

It's completely OK to dislike Unsounded, but in terms of narrative and quality in general it's as good as it gets.
