Hey everybody! Guess what time it is? Time for earlier than usual Bellybuttons! I always preferred this at night due to more people being online, but tonight is going to be going to movie with family and no guarantee how much time I'll have at the end of the night before needing to sleep for an early work shift tomorrow.

So instead, we now bring you vol. 7 of Les Nombrils early in the day. And as a special Christmas present from Ouash, our translator of this volume, all the pages are the proper size now rather than the unusual image size we got from the scans during the year!

Because this book of course lacks a recap page like all the others, last issue we learned Albin was just a dick rather than a murderer while his best friend in fact was. He got stabbed, Vicky was nearly pushed off a bridge, lesbians happened. It was a very packed volume and I encourage you to go read it.

Don't think too hard about it. Lesbians in this comic are seen as turbo sluts who will destroy the natural order of suburban Canadian life.

I was almost expecting Megan to pull a 180 here to get back at Vicky for all the shittiness and rejection, or to have been just fucking with her the entire time because that's just how the people in this book roll.

Why won't the French let amputees eat chocolate, anon?
>>
>>78437295
The expression is the final line from this joke (which I have translated):

> Mommy, can I have some chocolate?
> There's some in the cupboard. Go on and get it.
> But Mommy, I can't, you know I don't have any arms...
> No arms, no chocolate!

It's meant to poke fun at the absurdity of arbitrary "because I said so"-type parental rules. The mom doesn't want the kid to eat chocolate, so instead of just saying so and explaining why, she sets him up to fail and tells him not having arms is the reason why he can't have chocolate.

Not really. Hugo's been a complete fucking doormat despite knowing Jenny's pretty vapid about looks. Why grow a spine the moment someone calls her out in public for the express purpose of mocking not only her but the entire concept of Hugo and Jenny in a relationship?

I can get where he's coming from but Christ on the cross he should have let this one slide.
>>
>>78440099

>>
>>78442122
Or better yet, let Hugo go to the gym and get absolutely chiseled. Sure, getting a six pack is difficult, but he can at least let the beer belly go.
>>
>>78442130
Okay, so three volumes left. I'm betting a resolution with Jenny and Hugo with Vicky and Jenny coming to terms in 8. Karine's story mostly being resolved and a fakeout with Megan and Vicky with their parent's going after each other in 9. Vicky gets a conclusion in 10.
>>
>>78442203
Not really a great course of action, as it only validates Jenny's vapidness, but pretty realistic for a 15 year old boy.
>>
Hugo's no saint. He has jackshit in common with Jenny. The ONLY reason he's into her is her looks. If she looked like Murphey's mess of a girlfriend he'd never put up with her stupidity.

Jenny loves Hugo for his mind.
Hugo "loves" Jenny for dat ass.
>>
>>78442225

I mean, just look how her mom reacted to Hugo
>>
>>78442863

>>
>>78442863
>Hugo falls for Megan and turns her straight
>This creates a rift between Jenny/Vicky and Karina since Megan is part of her band
>Meanwhile James and Jean-Franky are now gay for each other
There, now everything is worse
>>
>>78442939
Things took a change of direction when Hugo realized how much shit Jenny's in on a daily basis and is still cheerful.
>>
>>78442950
nah, I do't think so
if anything everyone at school will tease Vicky because she came out as gay
also, she's poor now
they can't even turn towards Karine now
>world tour also means she's probably on a longer leave
>>
>>78443019
I honestly can't wait to see what the new status quo of the characters looks like.
Specially Vicky, she just found out she has a half brother, is broke and Megan is probably still going to try and date her behind their parents backs. What, when you think about it, would ruin any chance of their parents ever being ok with the relationship, like what would you if your daughter started dating the daughter of the guy that basically got you broke?
>>
So, here we are. Jenny and Vicky are now living in the same house.

Predictions:

Vicky, being out of her mother and sister's influence, might actually become a half decent person. I want to think that because her father and Jenny's mother will have little to no time to actually fuck up her life, but Jenny and her little sister Jenna will be somewhat of a good influence on Vicky. I want to think that seeing Jenny and Jenna taking care of their baby brother will be a good thing for Vicky to see.

Jenny, I want to say will stop being negatively effected by Vicky. Because of Vicky's change above, I want to think that Jenny will actually be allowed to be a good person. I am hoping that her mother getting and staying sober (sadly, I doubt it will last long) will help Jenny get past her bullshit. I admit, Jenny is the one I hold the most hope for because, while not the smartest one, she is influenced by her surroundings and I think if things lighten up for her that she will be able to lighten up herself. I'm also going to say it, I hope Hugo gives her a second chance. I think that boat as sailed, but I think both of them would be great for each other. She needs someone to anchor to, and he needs someone to strive to make himself better.

Karine... not sure what to say here. I have no problem with her and the band. I don't like Albin, and I am hoping she refuses to get into any kind of relationship with him ever again. She has grown the most, but that was due to outside influences and I don't think that actually is anything deep down. I think the band might be the best thing for her to have a future she deserves instead of one she settles for.
>>
>>78443112

Honestly, I am ok with the idea of Megan and Vicky dating. I think Vicky realizes she needs both someone she is attracted to and someone that can support her. If the band takes off, that is Megan in a nutshell.
>>
>>78441452
It's surprisingly good. One of those comics you end up reading for the story instead of the sex

I do actually have it saved on my computer, only problem is that I'm at my parents for the holidays and so I don't actually HAVE my computer. In the New Year, I guess I'll story time it on /aco/ if nobody beats me to it
>>
>>78427438
The worst part of the Record drama is that they would probably be better off without Albin. He's unreliable as he will just shut down for months on end, and she's already got three talented musicians with her who all seem like alright people.
>>
>>78427329
> Vicky's sister is actually smiling in the last panel
> literally doesn't care about her mom being attacked, her dad being threatened, or her entire family being called niggers, just as long as her baby sister is having a bad time

There's a lot of awful people in this comic, but somehow she always finds a way to be the worst.
>>
>>78427187
I've got a bad feeling that this is Albin's meds doing the talking, and that Karine will be ready to forgive him just as he's recovered and gone back to his old ways with another girl.
>>
>>78443112
>>78443204
I think the drama between Megan and Vicky will ramp up as, if what her father and mother said is true, Megan's dad did some very illegal, or at least civilly liable, things to put Vicky's family in their current situation.
>>
>>78443523
>he will just shut down for months on end

>>
>>78443890
Different anon but people don't just bounce back from deep, serious trauma like that with a couple of pills and ta-da. How old are you?
>>
>>78443795
Albin doesn't really seem that interested in any of the girls sexually,
he probably sees them more like art-projects or experiments
actually, he doesn't seem to be that bad, he might be manipulative but all of them have a better self-confidence at the end
why is Albin the evil guy again?
>>
>>78443905
Where? Are you talking about the doing housework together page? Because that wasn't sex, it was literally a joke about doing the dishes
>>
>>78443908
I know,
but anti-depressants break up the cycle of depression so the depressive person gets shit done
>>
>>78443914
People misinterpret things and believe that lying = worse than murder, or something like that. Albin being a bit dishonest and leaving some things out because he gets a kick from being a good influence in people's lives after a lifetime of being bullied and ostracized is hoorrrrrrible, but Vicky doing the same and much worse for James only because she wants to get a rich man to fleece and flaunt off and doesn't really give a shit about how James might feel about things is waved off because, uh, her parents are strict and superficial, or something.
>>
>>78443795
I doubt they approve of what's going on but they seem to be too intimidated by Karine's new attitude to act.
>>
>>78443970
I doubt the're intimidated by Karine (see >>78426870 and >>78426558)
>>
>>78443914
I'm pretty sure treating women like something to be improved then discarded is douchebag behavior. Plus he's dating a 15 year old.

>>78443952
There's a difference between Vicky pretending to share interests with James and trying to change James' personality and isolating him from his friends because she feels a need to improve him. Albin might have good intentions but he's a complete control freak. Doing the same thing to twelve women, essentially turning them into copies of each other in dress and appearance, is pathological behavior.
>>
I predict Karine will go on the world tour and then they will play wherever Dan is at the moment and more drama can happen.

Also, is Hugo the authors self-inset?
Why doesn't he at least try and improve his image since he knows the girl he likes cares so much about it, jeez.
>>
>>78444059
>Why doesn't he at least try and improve his image since he knows the girl he likes cares so much about it, jeez.

Because that'd just validate her shallowness and make him even more of a doormat than he is already.

Also, the author is woman.

But it's so much better being overweight and 'sweet'?
Then I really hope the author understands how shallow Hugo really is.

Albin isolating girls from their friends is really, really messed up. Classic abuser behavior. And as he becomes more emboldened his manipulation is only going to get worse.
>>
>>78426948

Interesting indeed.
>>
>>78442122
Wait, what the fuck?
Are you taking Jenny's side?
>>
>>78446173
On one hand isolating people from their friends is textbook abuser behavior but on the other hand Vicky and Jenny ARE really terrible to Karine and cutting off toxic relationships is usually a good thing

The Albin/Karine situation is just set up where it seems so bad but Karine has improved herself because of it

Now that she's better off she should probably get rid of Albin too
>>
>>78442122

That's ridiculous. What kind of person thinks that what few people they hate should decide the way they live?

Furthermore, it really is hurtful, and perhaps he somehow had the hope that she would respond to love and accept him, and yet she sent him to fuck himself.

What kind of pathetic bastard would still be hung up on her?

I know 4chan would just say that Hugo is just a pathetic Beta that was hung up on looks, and perhaps he was at the start, but I can't see it now as anything other than a guy in love with a girl that she thought was better than what she turned out to be.
>>
>>78446173
Have you actually read his interactions? he's not an abuser, he's naive and a little bit arrogant.

He thinks he can read people like a book and thinks he knows what's best for everyone and practically does it as a hobby. He then realized he's been acting like a retard on some things.

Not to mention that if it weren't for recent (book fucking 7) events humbling both Jenny and Vicky up, karine had virtually 0 reasons to hang out with them.

>>78446789
Albin & Hugo are big misunderstandings if you ask me. Hugo should have let that slide because Jenny made it clear she fucked up, I mean, clear enough to have learned the lesson to some degree.

Albin was one person before Karine and another afterwards. His lifestyle in a way, fell to pieces and now he realized he didn't really know himself. getting stabbed and left for dead by his childhood friend probably has something to do with this.

>>
Brilliant as always, how do they always knock it out of the park?
The visual and even translated dialogue is just so superb, by the way praise given to the translators as well. What's best is the way it juggles drama and comedy.

Take the scene with Vicky being confronted by Megan in the closet. It serves both as a joke and foreshadowing. Everything does in fact come crashing down on her. Well I guess technically that was inevitable all things considered but still I think it's quite clever.

Similarly I can see Hugo and Jenny's scene where they're literally walking in circles until Hugo requests for a change, a public one. Jenny declines since they'd be seen walking together. As soon as just that happens. Of course this scene as well was kind of exactly what it is at face value so it's debatable if it could be called foreshadowing but I feel it still achieves it since much how Vicky was literally in the closet Jenny literally has her affections now more out in the open, but still confined.
>>
>>78448237

I actually think there's a rotating focus idea at work, earlier we only saw snippets of Vicky's life and she seemed otherwise shallow and not very noteworthy suddenly one summer camp visit because of bad grades has thrown a wrench in the cogs and we can't avert our eyes from the disaster. Before all this and during the early stage the focus at the time was Karine and her own issues of identity and Dan and Albin and murder and so on. Now all that's done and less important, but Vicky's problems take front stage with everything else going on in the back.

The only question is if Jenny will and can pull off her own arc. I guess questions on her home life might be an angle but it's rarely seemed to be taken that seriously. Things might change with Will and Vicky around though, they might make her view things in a different light. In fact much like the transition from Karine to Vicky this might be a cue transition from Vicky to Jenny. If the Albinos are going on tour it would be a great excuse for Megan and Karine to leave the picture and force Vicky and Jenny to re-evaluate their new lives absent of her fulcrum presence especially with all the male love interests gone as well.

I'm sure that's just a reflection of the way he was raised. So, in a way, he's as much of a victim as anyone.

Which leads me to think that Jenny's mom, being a drunk, doesn't get out into the sunlight a lot which would lead to the hair colouring issues. That or the colourist and/or stripper sucks at their jobs.

It's set in FRENCH Canada. Honestly, Quebec is way less progressive than most non-Canadians realize. It's famously one of the most racist and xenophobic parts of the country. We just had an election where our Conservative party stirred up fears about middle eastern people more or less out of nowhere to get support from Quebec and that move completely tanked what had been their biggest competition into complete irrelevance basically overnight because the french ate it up so hard.

I don't generally hear a lot about french Canada being overly homophobic but based on how much of their cultural identity has been built on hating people who aren't white and french speaking I wouldn't be surprised to add gays to that list.

To give you a decent idea of what Quebec can be like: you know post 9-11 when the US got all pissy at France and people started dropping the word "french" and called stuff "freedom fries" and "freedom toast"? Quebec has been pulling shit like that longer than anyone reading this has been alive. They have a fucking governmental french language office lovingly referred to as the language police, an office given government mandate to try to push english and other non-french speakers out of the province. That's how culturally insular and conservative they are.
>>
>>78465335

hating muslims =/= hating gays
i dont understand why you think it would

muslims just blew up paris, of course a french-speaking place is going to hate them. but french people dont hate gays, they dont hate anything to do with sex.
>>
>>78465869
"Pretty much any act of nationalism or independent culture is seen as extreme xenophobia"? Like I said, the whole Canadian election thing just fucking happened. The Conservatives stirred up anti muslim sentiments by bringing up the issue of women covering their faces and Quebec went nuts for it. It was basically the nail in the coffin for the NDP who lost their entire base in Quebec and fell to a distant third because they weren't sufficiently anti-niquab for french Canadians. And then there was the time in 2013 that the aforementioned "language police" sent a warning to an Italian restaurant that words such as pasta and calamari weren't french enough and that they needed to change their menu to comply with Quebec language law (Google "Pastagate" for a good laugh). Most Canadians barely noticed because this is business as usual. So yeah, Quebec can be pretty xenophobic.

As to the issue of leaving, Quebec leaving would have been a nightmare for both sides. You can't just tear a country apart and not expect total chaos. A lot of Canadians didn't want separation because it would have been akin to a really ugly, costly divorce and the separatists were just too petulant to see that.

Most Quebecois are nice decent people, don't get me wrong. In any society you mostly get people just living their lives and whatever. But their politics are beyond toxic.

>>78466147

Maybe. I did kinda get off topic. My point was that people had this impression that French Canada Is some kind of ultra inclusive politically correct kind of place and that's not really all that true.
>>
>>78466304
Not that anon.
Sounds like you're blowing it way out of proportions.

The "Language Police" is just there to prevent total anglification of the french language (Norway (or Sweden?) actually has/had the same), which can be seen as both good or bad I suppose.
Heck, english isn't my first language but I'm so used to it, I often unconsciously substitute english words simply because the normal word slipped my mind.

The pastagate incident was caused by some overzealous pencilpusher that ended up resigning over it, after the restaurant owner went public with the story.

That is what I gather from the wiki articles at least.
>>
>>78451946
All things considered, he's the least worst of Vicky's family. Her moms a super bitch, and her sisters pure evil, so being a strict adulterer doesn't seem as bad in comparison.
>>
>>78465845
Fall 2016 at the earliest (though we may get some info before then), sometime in 2017 at the latest. Settle in, it'll be a long wait.
>>
>>78466508
Plus, and I don't mean to defend infidelity but just highlight the cause here, he is specifically cheating on his wife because she's sort of a needlessly uptight bitch who refuses to relent.

Instead of playing ball he just quietly got his kicks away from the house and let her have her way. It's not exactly the nice thing to do, but all things considered at least he isn't aggressive about his vices like she is. As seen during the party he didn't want a fight, tried to protect her and his family neutrally, and only defended himself when the fight was instigated by others. He didn't talk any shit.

He also seems to feel bad for others when something happens and showed concern for Vicky when she lost her dinner in the car. Like Vicky and Jenny, who technically were cheating on their main squeeze in public for someone else behind scenes, he's just in a very compromising situation. He's not a good person, but he's not intentionally trying to be bad either.
>>
>>78467144
I'm kinda hoping that Jenny, Vicky and her dad can get their shit together now.Vicky and her dad needed to get away from the rest of the family.
>>
>>78467144
don't forget she blatantly told her daughters that gold digging is the way to go
>>
>>78467768
Yes she did. If you look back you'll realize their marriage was doomed to fail. Kate married Will for his money, Will married Kate because he has a fetish for redheads. It's no surprise that, once both of those things were no longer true, everything finally came toppling down between them.

Right, but Jenny and vicky WERE treating Karine like absolute shit - remember the times where they actively sabotaged her relationship with Dan, for example, and all the awful shit they pulled on her in volumes 1-3? Like nearly drowning her in the pool, ruining her friendship with the various gans of boys (arcade + basketball) because they couldn't stand her having friends, infecting her with oral herpes, colouring her hair green, injecting home renovation grade silicone into her lips, all that stuff. Karine was an absolute loser before Albin.

Except that this was not a one-off thing. The only reason that story became big is because it sounds so absurd that it became one of those "weird international news" stories, but really this happens all the time. Hell, it's the law there that if a town's population is less than 50% English it's considered a solely french population and any bilingual signage has to come down. Hospitals have been ordered by the government office to reduce multilingual signage (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/english-signs-gaspe-hospitals-oqlf-1.3304520). One Quebec town with around a 40% english population decided to remove wording altogether from their municipal signs because they were tired of being harassed by the language watchdog for years (http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/quebec-town-makes-stand-for-english-told-to-remove-welcome-sign-decides-to-drop-french-too). This is not just a case of one overzealous pencil pusher. It is the explicit mandate of the office.

I get the idea of trying to preserve one's culture but Quebec is pretty infamous for being over the top about it.

The original writer left and Clarke, the artist but also a pretty good writer himself, took over, thus a progressive change in focus (from the castle to the school, from gag-based to continuous, and with the removal of Cancrelune. The biggest loss for me is Krapella's midriff which is now covered). That being said the original writer had a depressing as fuck origin story for Melusine and Melisande (their parents are deaaaaad) so maybe it doesn't matter.

>>78483077
>What's with all the animosity between witches and faeries?
They make each other sick quite literally. Prolonged contact with fairies causes sickness in most witches and wizards, and they have a tendency to solve their problems by killing them. It eventually turns out it's the same the other way (fairies are allergic to wizards), minus the wanton killing. Melusine and Melisande are immune due to being of the same blood (their mothers are sisters), and Adrazelle (sister to Melusine's father) is immune too just by being family, apparently (if you think about the way they explain it she actually has no fairy blood but it may be a subtle gag about comic book genetics)

>Why did Melisande chose to become a fairy? Or was it determined by genetics?
She was born a fairy

Not yet, since izneo only has half of them in low-resolution epubs. Only about the first half is up there in high resolution. They are slowly changing them all to high-res ones, I'm waiting for all of them to be available.

>Also, Grodbeldekks scans looks a million times better than the cinebook digitals.

that's cause I spent near a goddamn year messing with photoshop to make the colours look better, since the print quality was horrible for the first two books. And the digitals are still way sharper. Thanks, though, I'm glad to see people appreciate my lazy as hell scans.

The 5th book looks great in digital. I haven't bothered buying the actual book due to that.

I have the french books 20 and 21, those are only low-res in digitals, so I could make significantly better looking scans... not sure if it is worth all the work, if sooner or later there will be high-res digital versions of them.

I actually heard its more like the New York of Canada, where everybody is super snobby and has to stress the fact that they are from New York, I heard this is specially true with the Rich people in the area. Where as even rich Americans from the South, West, and Midwest are kind as fuck, and will allow into your home. I even had a friend from Vermont who traveled to Quebec, and informed me about this. At least they like Ze Hockey.

>>Have to worry that Ouash might lose interest or later volumes might go untranslated for whatever reason,

There were translations before Ouash, and if he dies of aids or whatever, there will be translations after Ouash.

This is internet.

>What if 4chan dies in the social network wars?
Very low possibility of that happening. Even those who hate 4chan thinks of it as a necessary existence. Remember the time /pol/ died, and all the rampant shitposters spread out to other boards? Now imagine if 4chan dies; obviously all the shitposters will plague other social sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.

And 4chan have been known to pull off impressive shit from time to time. Remember the Times Magazine Most Influential Person of 2009? I'd say this site will still go strong, despite what other people say.

4chan is both a sanctuary, and a containment site. Remember that.

I'd like to see 4chan die for a short time, just to see how that would look. I don't even know what would hurt them more: the amount of trolling that would land in their lap, or the amount of new users taxing their infrastructure beyond breaking point.

>Remember the Times Magazine Most Influential Person of 2009?

Yeah, that was hilarious - but when was the last time 4chan pulled anything like that?

last year when GooberGade was created on /v/ and funded the fine capitalists, thus sparking the whole controversy

4chan is not really a social network so i dont see it getting involved in such squabbles, if anything it would be fanning the fire for fun

The next best thing is to have goth Karine and blonde Karine make out.
But of course the chances of that happening is even lower.

This is also true. I suppose my lack of hesitation to name/tripfag leads people to forget that there are anons and named scanlators that don't use their name on 4chan who have and still are doing great work. I feel like Philly for example really outpaces me with how much work he does. I think he might collab with Data for typesetting at times but it still seems like putting out an entire multibook series quietly all at once is not a big deal for him whereas it takes me like 2 weeks or more to finish one 50 page book sometimes.

Anyway, long story short, I don't intend to disappear, but even if I do The Bellybuttons will get picked up by somebody. It's too well-loved not to be.

>Data

Sosich has been typesetting for him a lot, lately.
