Let's read some more of Doyle and DeCarlo's original "Josie", starting with a story that is more relevant to today's times than ever.

I don't see why they even needed to replace Pepper? Is a four-girl group that unthinkable?
>>78393599
>>78393605
IIRC she was written out of the comic because one of the higher-ups at Archie comics thought she bared an uncomfortable resemblance to either (a) student protestors or (b) lesbians
>>78393611
>>78393647
>>78392928
The "Dan n' Dick" thing was one of Archie's attempts to rip off Stan Lee's editorial style. Their whole Mighty Comics line around this time was a Marvel ripoff right down to the credits (which Archie didn't usually have), which gave the contributors names similar to the Stanley Lieber/Stan Lee transformation.
Superheroes were in thanks to the combination of Marvel and the Batman TV series. You can see Archie trying to cash in on the fad everywhere.
>>78393658
>>78393670
Of course, in those times, the Archie artists and writers got everything BUT credit (save for Bob Bolling and DeCarlo)

In the next issue, we enter the swingin' sixties in style, shoeless...
>>78393701
Probably some of the people liked the lack of credit because it made it easier for them to contribute to multiple companies.
When Stan Goldberg went back to Marvel to do Millie the Model again with Lee writing (Lee is basically a comedy writer, the short humor comics are what he liked to write) Marvel credited his art to someone else so he wouldn't get in trouble with the Archie editors.
>>78393852
Ah, yes. Goldberg did do teen humor for DC and Marvel during the '60s and '70s (too lazy to look up the specific titles). Samm Schwartz had his own "Tippy Teen" series by Tower and also worked on "Date with Debbi" for DC. There are other examples but again, too lazy to look them up right now.

Dan DeCarlo's brother Vince was his letterer and sometime inker, he died young in the late '60s.
Then DeCarlo's twin sons Dan Jr. and Jim came to work for the company (Dan Jr. penciled exactly like his dad, Jim inked for both of them) and they both died young in the early '90s.
Poor guy.
>>78394106
>>78394115
And Josie Dumont, the original inspiration for Josie and DeCarlo's wife, passed away a couple years ago as well.
Being a DeCarlo is suffering.

btw, the letterer for THIS story was late comics vet Jon D'Agostino, who had previously worked stints at Charlton and Marvel before going on to be one of Archie's premier inkers
He inked quite a few DeCarlo stories, but those can be hard to come by. (Hell, he also inked a few Samm Schwartz stories, even harder to come by)
but I digress

Eda Edwards, wife of veteran Archie artist Joe Edwards, answered the reader mail in the voice of the characters for this and other features like "Dear Betty and Veronica", often without pay.
In her own words...
>I became the Dear Abby of the Archie world, answering letters from kids all over the globe.
>I went through the tons of mail that was sent to us by Archie Comics and answered as many as the page permitted. Joe did the lettering.
