Ex-Troper here.

The site was plagued with spotty moderation due to the site founder being kind of nuts when it came to a lot of things on the site, the mod team being inexperienced most of the time, a shitton of fetishy content that almost got the ads shut down.

There's also the fact that the site couldn't decide whether it wanted to be Wikipedia Lite or a loosely collected series of fandom blogs. If the mod team stuck with one or the other, at the very least, the userbase wouldn't be at each other's throats as much.

I haven't been back proper in years, but I hear that they got rid of Fast Eddie, and they cleaned up most of the fetish stuff when I left.

Jumping the Shark: Many users feel that the site has done this thanks to recent events. moot suddenly started unfairly enforcing rules he never bothered with before, brought in a bunch of new authoritarian mods, and deleted an entire board just for being involved in a protest. This is causing many users to flee 4chan for the newly-created 8 chan, which has much looser but more effective mods and doesn't discriminate.

Anon, I don't think it's just the memes.
People on the outside that spend less than an hour on their computer a day think 4chan is the root of all evil on the internet, because /b/ has done some mostly harmless things since it was created, and since most of them have no idea what the fuck a 4chan is, they mostly rely on other websites (news based ones in particular) to tell them just what it is.
And since it's the job of the news to cover the worst over the best in a situation.. 4chan kinda gets caught in the middle there.
I don't even think a news article has talked about the occasional good stuff people on 4chan have done (at least i don't think so), like /v/ sending get well soon cards to Satoru Iwata.

I think the main problem was inviting every autist in the world in and letting them loose with no editorial control. The site might have stayed decent if every edit had to be approved by one guy, who deleted all the blatant trash.

Also: allowing fanfiction examples, allowing real life examples, allowing troper tales in any form whatsoever, and not putting in a hard upper limit for tropes per show and vice versa (about 20, so that leading autists actually have to pick relevant examples instead of listing everything that happened in all 1517 episodes of Ranma).

The answer is as simple as ~Autism~

The idea of documenting recurring patterns in common media isn't necessarily a bad one, but tvtropes shows that making it an open-source wiki-style resource just leaves it open to ignorant kids and the dangerously autistic kinds of NEETs that spend their lives watching MLP and masturbating in their parents' basements. This is also a good demonstration as to why most media-related boards on this site, including /co/, are frequently shit

The funny thing about tumblr is that it's a disorganized mess of blogs. The feature that filters what's on your dashboard is as close to baords as they get. So the SJ types are /pol/, but for tumblr. A lot people, here and there, have noticed things like this. I for one see tumblr as 4chans sister-site. A reflection of everything here. Think about it.
>4chan is probably 3/4 men
>tumblr is probably 3/4 women
>both have an extremist political minority that refuses to see the world realistically, and seeks to sway the future to their ideals
>both have a majority of posters that like gay porn of the opposite sex of the majority, as well as porn of the opposite sex with sexual organs of the majority sex (futa/fuccboi)
>both have a lot of stupid fucking jokes, puns, and shit/fun-posts, comments, and general site-wide humor that the average person would probably be offended or confused by
>both agree and understand Reddit is shit
>both hate, misunderstand, or distrust the other site for the superficial appearance of the aforementioned extremist political minority
And despite ALL of that, I still wouldn't be caught dead with a tumblr account. The navigation is too shit to deal with and their file size limit is ridiculous. I heard it was still only 2mb.

Found this on Deader Than Disco:

>/b/, one of the many boards on 4chan. In the late 2000s it was the internet's boogeyman, a central hub of memes and a force to be reckoned with. Its relevance and creative output in the '10s has dropped off significantly, both inside and outside of 4chan. There are a number of reasons this happened: the board found itself flooded with new users (many of them adolescents and teenagers) because of its reputation, many of the older users moved on to other boards (this created a cycle of newer users coming/older users going at a consistent rate), the board had a tendency to isolate itself from the rest of the site, and unlike other prominent boards that have evolved over time, /b/ has pretty much remained the same as it was around 2007, minus the rage comics. All of this pretty much assured that they get left behind as other boards moved on and influenced the site as a whole. /v/, /mu/, and /co/, while also experiencing a drop in relevance, still provide enough output to keep them in the scene, while /sp/, /fit/, /tv/, and /int/ have since stepped up as the more prominent boards of the site and have entered golden ages of their own. What was once 4chan's very core has now become an irrelevant pest in the eyes of other users.

Overall nobody really cares that much even if you get famous, at most it's just an interesting bit of trivia and something that may actually deepen the fan's appreciation, since sympathy to embarrassment is one of the things that draws people together. And if someone does notice and spread it around, all it takes to defuse the issue is to say "yep, I was a fucking moron, go ahead and laugh at me because goddamn that was a retarded thing I did" like how totalbiscuit wrote off his embarrassingly stupid SA rant about how much smarter he is then dumb atheists with his 150 IQ and law school degree.

The only time posts like that get dug up and passed around forever is when the way the person acts today is totally contradictory to the old posts and they try to bury it and refuse to apologize, like Ian Miles Cheong's neo-nazi teenage years or Dobson's inflation days or Linkara wanting to suck big black cock despite being totally not gay and 100% straight and also a good christian conservative man.

The thing with TvTropes, I think, is that their memes don't cycle.
4chan threads die. Tumblr and Reddit posts get forgotten/downvoted. But TvTropes shit just stays static. Their memes never become cringeworthy old jokes replaced by newer ones. That people like this are allowed to post
>Why Not Now: For me, Team Four Star has never sunk so low in their entire history than to have Krillin make an abortion joke in episode 44. An abortion joke! Really? Really?! At a time when women are constantly losing control over their bodies and facing the very real possibility of having a forced birth at least once in their lifetimes, making a joke that distracts the viewer from what is supposed to be comedic parody and brings us back to an increasingly worsening and depressing world was just plain all-around unfunny. This is a real, serious, and complicated issue that needs to be discussed, and like the ignorant sexists themselves who promote such views, Team Four Star reduced it to an insultingly childish level of simplicity, and that's just pathetic.
>Dr Zulu 2010: I enjoyed episode 1 for the most part, but even I have no liking to what they did to Carla AKA Eren's mother. Anyone who read the manga or watches the anime know that her death kickstart Eren's vengeful crusade against the titans. However, in the abridged version, her entire character is just a joke about her saying nothing than "Hmm Hmm". Yes! Carla's entire shtick in the whole 3 minutes of screentime is her saying "Hmm Hmm" over and over again. Come on. Faulerro's Null Metal Alchemist gave Trisha the same amount of screentime and she has more personality and more of a character than Carla. I don't expect her to be deep or well written, especially in a condensed adaptation of five episodes of the series, but Team Four Star should know better than having her saying just "Hmm Hmm".

Back when I went to that site I found one worthwhile fanfic, and you wouldn't even call it that really because it was for D&D. I only remember it for the authors ability to perfectly capture the feel of a shounen fightmans manga in text.

Compare the page size for any given Shakespearian play or classic film to the page for a flavor-of-the-month anime sometime. Or don't, if you value your belief in a just, loving world.

Just for an experiment, I decided to compare Shakespeare to Sword Art Online. Ctrl-Fing suggests that Hamlet's main page has around 160 examples, and it's something of an outlier (King Lear has about a third that). Meanwhile, the characters page for just Kirito has around 170 examples.

So... yeah, according to TV Tropes, the bland, overpowered protagonist of a flash-in-the-pan anime that everybody stopped caring about after about six months is worth greater analysis and compiling than one of the most famous and enduring works to ever be written in English.

I don't think you can call anything TvTropes does "Analysis." Compiling, sure, but that pace is where analysis and actual thinking about a piece of fiction go to die.

If your typical troper writes a story they connect tropes A, E, C, and F together and think that's good enough. There's no understanding of why an author would use a particular trope over another. It's like writing a story with madlibs.
>>
>>78256957
Even they hate him, look at the dethroning moment and wall banger pages.
>>
>>78264821
Beowulf has practically no page.
>>
>>78264821

To be fair, Shakespeare analysis is pretty well covered elsewhere.

Also, a lot of what's written on popular pages might be due to how much information is available from show creators, producers and so on. There's generally a lot more to say in general on an ongoing story as well.

I know that doesn't excuse stuff like Frozen or anything else that's recent and also completed.

And I agree that the circlejerking is ridiculous, like one page about troubled childhoods lists Zuko's relationship with Ozai as "bringing a whole new definition to to concept of shitty parenting" or something, as though it's some groundbreaking new take on the concept.

I mean I like Avatar, but come the fuck on.

Check out the "Fridge Brilliance" page for Epic Rap Battles of History. They're either explaining extremely obvious jokes (like Hitler talking about trains and showers) or worse, completely missing them:

>The line referring to The Lorax during the Ghostbusters' first verse initially seems a bit confusing and out of place... until you realize that they don't literally mean the creature from the Dr. Seuss book, it's probably meant as a derogatory nickname for Walter Peck (who cited environmental concerns as his reason for wanting to shut them down). This also seems reasonable when you consider the line is delivered by Venkman, who was the one that initially refused to co-operate with Peck and thus provoked his rage.

>Hannibal Lecter calls Jack the Ripper a "Penny Dreadful version of O.J. Simpson." This seems to be an odd person to reference, until you think about it: Lecter is one of two villains in Silence of the Lambs. Who is the other one? Well, he shares his name with the team O.J. was famous for playing on: The Buffalo Bills.

The site became the default nerd/geek/tv/whatever media wiki in the eyes of the net when the founder only intended it to be a site for people to dick around with and be retarded. Both ideas conflicted rather hard since the owner's vision had virtually no quality control, leading to blatantly wrong articles and weird shit typical of fandoms. Drama ensued and slowly, as the years went by the owner implemented some measures that made the site more serious and scrutiny due community and outside pressure (lol google). However the place is simply too big to be entirely clean. And this is without touching the forums, the administration, and owner drama at all.

We can debate whether nowadays it's something close to a decent site or not. Certainly not good but maybe decent if you don't look too hard into it. However no matter what we agree on it's a fact that the site's reputation is ruined no matter what they do.

TVTropes is still useful for one thing though: if you are an artist and you need to draw a scene, you can look on TVTropes for examples of a ceratin trope that works similarly and see how it was done. Generally you can find 3-4 examples of a scene and see how it was developed and use it as inspiration.

I don't see the problem here. The guy wants a proud Lucario and people are shitting on him for not wanting it for gameplay reasons. He's immersed himself in the Pokemon universe; nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>78275003
The reason people are weirded out is that he thinks "Proud of its Power" means that Lucario really is more powerful.
>>
>>78275003

The problem is that he's immersed himself in the Pokemon universe, though. He's too far in. If you're not treating it like a puppy-mill-cum-pit-fighting simulator, or at the very least as a fantasy animal molestation avenue, you're not doing it right.

He also acted like a sperg when he was called out on his lack of Pokemon knowledge, but it's easier to say that he's not playing Pokemon right.

I don't think he genuinely thinks that;I think he was saying that in the context of personality traits, if one were living in an actual Pokemon universe, that having a Pokemon with a personality trait that makes it "proud of its power" would be cool and in his opinion better than the other option, even if feasibly gameplay wise that is not the case. I mean, at no point does he actually say that he thinks its more powerful. Just that the idea of other traits are stupid and inferior in his mind.
>>

Even so, the fact that he's going so insane over one line of text and posting a multi-paragraph response, when he doesn't even seem to understand how that flavor text works, is what makes him seen like a nutcase.

Deleting the porn was a bad move. Especially since it was so badly done. Story of O disappears, horrible fanfictions stay has long has there isn't too graphic sex in it. Also it showed that people there took themselves way too seriously.

SA is like a site made of JUST the 4chan rejects (bronies, homosuck, frozen, etc) and the most obnoxious oldfags to ever exist.

When I was in college I was into NeoGAF but I bailed when I saw that it was just becoming a race to post the first le epic first post followed by an echo chamber of shit opinions you weren't allowed to argue about.

Reddit can very very occasionally be ok but the vote system is absolutely retarded and ruins everything, it says right there "don't down vote just because you disagree!" yet nobody listens to it and any kind of argument is instantly buried.

Tumblr is only tolerable if you completely ignore the social aspect and just share pretty pictures. The problem with the site is like the reverse of Reddit, since only the controversial and stupid opinions get reposted over and over. The community there pretty much just spends all day looking to get upset at things, and trust me, it's not just social justice folks.

4chan really is one of the better sites just because of the fact that everyone has an equal voice. However in practice it attracted the most cynical, joyless people on the planet and a bunch of rejects from the above sites for the cynical people to get mad at, creating a powder keg that thousands of bait posters are attracted to like flies to shit. Every discussion is fucking open warfare, and the ones that aren't usually devolve into circlejerks very quickly. And other 2ch clones are slow and used mostly for porn and bitching about 4chan mods.

Fuck, was the internet ever good, or was I just too young to see it for what it is?

This makes me wonder...
Would there be a market for a website that allowed people to talk about entertainment and media in general in a more relaxed fashion, with more reasonable moderating than TVtropes or /tg/'s media boards?

>Negativity is allowed where applicable, and if a user's work sucks feel free to tell them so within reason.
>Moderators clean up poorly written, obviously gushing, obviously theorizing, or obviously flaming edits, and producing constant horseshit will get you banned/or laughed at
>If one can believe that someone is writing their own article and there's more than 'this article is overly positive about an obscure thing' that article will be purged and the user IP banned. Viral marketing is cancer and spending bandwidth on shitty webcomics, vloggers, and webshows isn't that interesting
>If you're going to say something that you're planning on passing off as fact, cite your shit or quote your shit.

Every other sentence he contradicts himself, he only "explains" shit if he wants to and tells the viewer they should feel wrong if they expected otherwise, his idea of defending something is "it's bad but it's okay because I said so", he started the video by saying he was not gonna be subjective then contradicts himsel inmediately in the next sentence and he genuinely believes he's smart and right with no shame. Also note that the reason he takes cartoons insanely seriously is due to them being an escape from his shitty childhood. I've listened to his reviews and he sounds unhealthily angry in all of them.

Seriously, it's /co/.

Tumblr for pictures, sometimes browsing the cartoon subreddit, but anyway.

No opinion, but very no longer relevant.

>reddit
It's only sane when you consider what forums used to be like. Anyone who suffered through vBulletin is probably aware of how much of an improvement it is. Unfortunately they fucked up the search feature, which was the best part of the site. Being able to search for a lengthy FAQ style guide from 3 years ago is something most other sites don't have.

>tumblr
Basically good for pictures and not much else. It's almost impossible to have a streamlined conversation, and most of the memes are shit...but surprisingly some aren't.

>4chan
Best place to actually discuss cartoons without actually being a good place to discuss cartoons.

>was the internet ever good, or was I just too young to see it for what it is
You're too old to see it with childlike naiivity but too young not to give a fuck and revel in its shittiness. We have better access to cartoons, comics, drugs, and music without even having to leave our chairs.

That image is outdated. It lacks forced, unfunny memes and shitposting.

Holy shit.

I don't know about inflation but futa's popular because it allows people to express their closet faggot tendancies while pretending to themselves that they're actually totally 100% straight because the cock they're jacking off to is attached to a woman technically.

Personally, and I say this as a guy who is totally alright with fucking dudes, futa is way too fucking gay for me.

>shitty childhood
Based on what I've read on those blogs he posted that detail his childhood, I doubt that this is true. He literally describes his parents getting onto him about his shitty grades and then outright states that he intentionally didn't pay attention in school, preceding then to go "mug parents were mean to meeee". He also bitches about school (suprise suprise) too hard, and that his teachers hated him (which totally had nothing to do with the fact that he wasn't paying attention in class, and whenever they lectured him about his grades he turned himself brain off and stared vacantly at them while nodding the entire time). In short: he thinks his parents telling him to take thumb out of his ass, get his head in the game and actually set realistic goals for himself was a bad childhood. Now he sits around, thumb still planted firmly up his own ass, complaining that his life is shit.

Frankly, I hope he's found face down in a fucking swimming pool

The whole idea of broken

TvTropes is founded on the idea that all art is composed of lego bricks, and when you take it apart and catalogue all those lego bricks, you have a greater understanding of art. Then you can take those lego bricks and put them into different shapes and you can be a great artist too.

Place is fucked up
>>
>>78289253
>TvTropes is founded on the idea that all art is composed of lego bricks
They explicitly say that's not the idea though.

Not everything falls under a trope, not every trope in a piece has to be a bad thing. It's just supposed to be a wiki of noticing and pointing out patterns. Only the autistic users think everything can be disassembled into tropes.
>>
>>78265837
Ive tried forums, irc, reddit, tvtropes, da, 4chan...

4chan is the only place and it's so bad I might quit. It seems like the only good place is one's own glass dome.

It's not. Luke pulls a Revan after the original trilogy and fucks off to uncharted space. It's hardly a spoiler, Luke's disappearance is brought up in maybe the first 5 minutes of the movie.

I forgot about signatures. Jesus christ those are the absolute fucking worst. On a semi related note, how fucking ironic is it that 4chan is the only place that you can get decent Sonic discussion
