Deadpool actually began by referencing out of date pop culture. That was what was amusing about him.

But kids these days don't get that. It was funny in the late 80's to reference the late 70's and early 80's. If you reference Who Let The Dogs Out and the Star Wars prequels, kids will cringe and wonder how you can be so out of date.

So you have to reference the now and let his references age to the proper point in their collections.

Except he's been having a GOAT series written by Duggan with art ranging from Meh to Amazing, people loved his part in X-Force, is getting a series by his best writer soon which is a team-up with Spider-Man who were always great together. I haven't read his miniseries but they mostly seem okay from what I've heard.

You're probably correct. If the movie actually portrays the character correctly we could see public perception improve. I'm expecting to hear people complain "they tried to make him edgy like wtf Deadpools supposed to be FUNNY not serious fucking Fox" considering I've read reviews like that on Kelly and Duggan trades.

No he made references but it wasn refs just for the sake of references, he had a punchlime for them or he made comparison that were funny.

Pic related he's referencing the "much ado about nutting" short it's a very old Merrie Melodies short that people probably watched if they grew up in the 90's or before since they showed that in the old cartoon reruns during those decades.

But if you have never seen it he describes it to you and on top of that makes a relevant commentary about his life using that reference.
