I wonder if DC would allow a writer to set his story in the time period of shirt Superman. Like, say, tell a story that happened sometime in between Morrison's run's start and when Superman got the super-armor. Would people react negatively to that just because it doesn't further continuity?

Not really. Do people not like self-contained little stories? Clark doesn't need to be constantly evolving his status quo, sometimes he just needs to be Superman and solve problems.

I enjoyed seeing a massively depowered Superman trying to hunt down villains with his new power level, but I'm really just waiting for him to get back to 100%.
