I'm hoping for the biggest sack of WTF shitflinging insanity since "OUR LOVE IS REAL"

But it will probably be mild, disappointing, and barely Moon over June level.

Maybe if they do something retarded enough to start the whole gamer gate fuckcycle again, but I'm not counting on it.

Man, there's a lot of talent in the book. Like Atwood, obviously, but even some early cartoonists like Roberta Gregory.

I genuinely don't get how this offensive or improper in any way. I'm not going to buy the book, but as a romance/crush/dating anthology by geeky creators I do not get the problem with it existing.

Why do girls think they can be nerd/geeks?

Why are so many girls these days calling themselves nerds/geeks to be trendy and quirky?

Why does every girl on Tinder put "GAMER/GEEK GURL XD" in their bio? Yeah okay, you own a ps4 and you play Dark Souls, you're a total geek now.

Why do women want to associate themselves with a introverted subculture, when they really can't truly be what you would actually define a "nerd/geek" to be? Women need to be social, men don't, you can even see one of these girls taking a fucking selfie in this picture.

I just don't get this sudden fascination girls suddenly have with desperately trying to be nerdy/geeky.

The concept of geek culture is retarded.

It was retarded in the 90s when dudes did it, and it's retarded when everyone is doing it now.

If you like something, you like it. It shouldn't be some kind of status symbol.

>Lol, I'm such a nerd, I've seen Star Wars like once on MTV

No, it made sense back in the day because the label helped you find people who would be interested in the same things you did because there wasn't a whole ton of things to digest and there was a lot of overlap

Nowadays though there's too many things to be a fan of for "geek" or "nerd" to mean anything. We could both call ourselves geeks but I love tabletop gaming and you watch science fiction from the 80s. People are jaded with "fake geek culture" because they expect to be able to find someone that shares their interests when they hear someone call themselves a geek

But that's their fault, not the "fake geek"s

My grandpa was in the Waffen SS.

Most of his good memories came from eating and having the best pickings of plunder with the least resistance because he was driving officers around right behind the main troop movements whenever they advanced.

That's the small window when the infantry's either ahead with the tanks or still trying to catch up and the people whose houses they emptied out had not yet dared to return home.
>>
>>78157698
Not suggesting that it is offensive or improper. No problem with it existing.

But it's a envogue political topic. Having seen nothing but the cover, I really don't know what it is. Predictable girl power retreads. A sack of tumblrcrap. A glorified political pamphlet. Lightweight sci fi of the kind the Hugo voting block likes. Shojo girls in love homage.

Could be any of that. Could be something new. But I'm expecting something closer to POWER UP than anything I will either enjoy, or enjoy seeing crash and burn.

>>78157904
High power level geek girls are real. They just tend to have the same glomping tomoko/jabba the hut social skills as the geek guys. To ba fair though the Kotaku writer who called Watamote "The most mean-spirited anime I've ever watched" is a man.

Tomoko is directly based on the highschool days of the writer and artist.

Bokurano is too dark; Shadow Star is closer to the average level of misery that a lot of shows had in the early-to-mid 2000s.
>>
>>78176062
Have you ever met a high school girl? That doesn't disprove my point at all.
>>
>>78176094
Narutaru is great and all but if you actually read the article, the problem he had with the anime was that people are laughing at real issues people with mental illness experience. There isn't anything fake geek about it; you actually have to immerse yourself in the culture and watch the show to get to the point of reviewing something like this.

Also it's delicious clickbait. "What? This guy doesn't like the anime we all like? How come?"
>>
>>78158004
Thank you, these are twee loving artfags trying to be as nerdy as possible. It's the same on tumblr when a really cute girl has mediocre art but knows how to dress well, takes great selfies and actually has social skills.

Then you have certain fags on /ic/ who go "womenz can't into art" and they can, they're just rarely going to be that cute hipster girl with the beret and nice tumblr. It's usually going to be the fat goth chick or the mousy unkempt awkward mess.

There are degrees of mainstream, like among fandoms. I'm using it loosely to describe something that is popular enough to be on Kotakus radar.

Well, that made me go track the article down to read it for myself.
Your summary is precise, but I can't help but feel like I'm still right; if some black humor and a little Fremdscham about social anxiety and depression is enough for him to say that it's making light of them (or that it's the "most mean-spirited" anime he's ever seen) then he's just got a low threshold for that sort of thing in general.

Now I can write a clickbait article, too:
"My First Trip Back to Kotaku Since 2012, and It Was as Shitty as Ever"

>>78176303

>>
>>78176316

but what if it has a sci fi twist or something

>>
>>78176344
But Narutaru is a serious drama that handles dark themes very well for the most part and shows what depression can lead to without making it something funny. Watamote plays something serious for laughs.

>but what if it has a sci fi twist or something
Then sadly, it probably wouldn't have the title it does.
When a story isn't about thinly-veiled autobiographical slice of life crap it doesn't usually have to be sold on the basis of its gender focus. To put it another way, a story about guys can be about them running off to be pirates in space or time traveling or something. A story about girls has to be about the girls having relationships. It might have a tiny bit of sci-fi or fantasy flavoring, but the actual core is going to be "relatable" and, as you said, self-fellating 90% of the time.
>>

that's so dumb! i'm a woman and a feminist and when i was 15 i was basically tomoko, just less perverted. but stuff like ordering a burger, taking pictures in a photobooth, not knowing how to navigate a victoria's secret, barely having any friends due to my my toxic personality but blaming everybody else instead... totally me! male geek characters get this kinda treatment all the time, but watamote is one of the few times i've seen a "geek girl" character have the same kinda toxic personality AND get her just desserts for it.

really can't think of any western examples except for maybe enid coleslaw and helga pataki, which is funny because both of them despite being deeply flawed get idolized on tumblr and the like for being 'feminist icons' - though perhaps this is because they are portrayed in a more fleshed out and human way than female characters typically are. if this is so, then tomoko is a feminist icon too - feminists should want more honest depictions of women, even if they're unflattering or unpleasant. we're gross and awful too and i don't think that's shown enough...

But anyways, I believe in gender equality and notice the way some others are going about it is silly. The brand of feminism that annoys most folks here is trendy feminism (or "white feminism" as it's called on tumblr) that's weak tough white girl power bullshit that ignores how men, POC, etc are affected by the same societal shortfalls, just in different ways.

Yes, men explaining things in condescending ways happens. I've found I get much more condescending, insulting talk directed at me from women though. I'm a woman. And it's usually from those girl power feminism type women too. Nobody is as mean or insulting to women as other women are.

I always found that silly as like a male doctor will probably know way more. being a woman doesn't give you perfect knowledge on all of them, in fact living through them is more likely to colour your view and make it more personal knowledge rather than as a objective whole

You fucking retard

What you call "mansplaning" is a purely sexist interpretation of oneself inability to properly argue or explain shit, implying that the sex of the person have anything to do with it. You are the sexist one, anon. I'd say misogynistic too, but sadly (and ironically) it is a sexist term that can only be applied to men.

Also I find it hilarious that you call it "white feminism" like, what the fuck? Are you telling me that the skin color of the woman change something to the validity of her argument (regardless of said argument is even about)? That a white skinned feminist voice is somehow less valuable than the one of a minority feminist? How the fuck can you even think up of such things and call yourself open minded and that you are for the defense of woman rights, when you pick and choose what is it that should be a woman?

The reason why peoples are gradually hating feminism more and more is because of your constant hypocrisy and refusal to confront this omnipresent part of 3rd wave feminism. Reread what you just posted, and if you cannot see your own hypocrisy then I'm saddened to tell you that you are part of the problem you claim to be fighting against.

Beside, how the fuck can you expect peoples to look and listen to you seriously when you cry about such inane bullshit while woman in others country are actually fighting for their rights, to the point that they life are actually under threat?

It probably was bait but given the constant influx of tumblerites and newfags to the site chance are that it isn't.

>The neologism[9] showed up simultaneously in multiple places, so its origin is difficult to establish.[9] In an essay titled Men Explain Things to Me, Solnit told an anecdote about a man at a party who said he had heard she had written some books. She began to talk about her most recent book at the time, on Eadweard Muybridge, whereupon the man cut her off and asked if she had "heard about the very important Muybridge book that came out this year" – not considering that it might be (as, in fact, it was) Solnit's book.[10]

>The word is thought to have been first used in 2008 or 2009,[11] shortly after Solnit published her April 2008 blog post. In it, she did not use the word mansplaining, but described the phenomenon as "something every woman knows."

>A month later, the word appeared in a comment on the social network LiveJournal, and its use has grown since.[3] It soon became popular among feminist bloggers, and then in mainstream cultural commentary.[3][9] It was included on The New York Times' 2010 word of the year list,[9] nominated for the American Dialect Society's most creative word of the year honor in 2012,[2] and added to the online Oxford Dictionaries in 2014.[12]

When I was younger, I went through this ornery counter-weeaboo phase where i vocally hated anime cause of same face and lazy art. I still am not big into it, but at least with anime, it a huge industry that's oversaturated, and arts have to use the cut-and-paste facial characteristics to meet deadlines and actually make money. Not only is this tumblr style usually an individual, or at least much smaller process (I'm going to assume op's pic is of a webcomic, but I guess it could very well be print with our industry as it is), but this art manages to be even more lazy and boring. These American artists literally have no excuses.
Also if I was still in high school, I would be the most insufferable anti-tumblr art cunt and probably have even less friends than I did, so I'm glad I got out before internet culture became such a fucking thing.

I'm not saying white women's opinions are less valid, aren't real women, whatever, etc. What I mean is that in highly publicized, mainstream feminism the focus is on white women and their experiences. Black, Latina, Asian and other women of color have a different experience than white women because of they experience the intersection between racism and sexism, but mainstream feminism almost wholly ignores these narratives and how they differ from my own white Western one. I don't think my voice is less valuable, but I also think it's better to let others with an experience that differs from my own to speak for themselves, rather than me trying to speak for or over them when the best I can do is empathize with them.

Also I've been on /co/ for seven years, unfortunately.

I wasn't accusing you of mansplaining. I was accusing you of tumblr-esque armchair activism.

>How it is a contradiction?
Okay, Mojo I'll explain.
You posit that a white feminist voice is just as important as that of a minority feminist, because that kind of colorblindness is what entry level egalitarians always do. But then you hide behind the "starving African's defense" and cite the women in predominately brown countries that are under actual life threatening oppression as being more important and that first world white chick problems are "inane bullshit".

Either the voices and complaints all matter, or some are more important than others. You can't have it both ways.

Now let me be clear. I agree that first world white chick problems are *inane* bullshit. I think if you're able to whine about oppression on twitter then odds are you aren't oppressed in any meaningful way because hey, you have a computer or smart phone, internet access, and live in a country that doesn't censor either. And here's the thing. That's kind of the reason for the whole "white feminism" subdivide in the first place; it was a bunch of people going "Wait these kids don't have any meaningful argument here they're just whining about piddly ass bullshit". I'd just as soon throw the whole thing out. But your gun jumping attempt at appearing colorblind and egalitarian? That's "spoiled millennial white girl feminism" 101. It's conflating all the problems together just like that "people of color" bullshit.

Why do you think women bandwagon on to everything that men find interesting? It's because it's a threat to their worth.

>Men continue to like sports, prioritize it over women

>Women who take gaming seriously don't want to be associated with the uber casuals trying to grab male attention

>Bandwagon hostile takeover is in full force
>Developers cater to them because even though they don't represent the majority of their customers or sales, they have a massive sway in the media due to being a vocal minority who can get negative reviews seen by all thanks to social media idiots

Feminist is a pretty loaded term, and can mean many different things. I'd just say "I think true female lead counterpart to the Monkey Island series would have been seen as just as great a character". No need to even say "great male character" or "great female character", because gender doesn't really factor significantly into who Guybrush/Galbrush is.
>>
>>78179632

Someone recently wrote about why she hates "Strong Female Characters," because they lead to vanilla protagonists who have no flaws and do no wrong. Their chief attributes are spunkiness, toughness, and a quip or two about how they're good enough to keep up with the guys. They're allowed to be violent or scornful towards men in ways men can't be towards women (think of Agent Carter shooting at Steve to test out his shield), and despite all this they have little agency over the actual plot.

She talks about how male characters get to be all kinds of things: fun, scary, slovenly, preening, manipulative, earnest, etc. But female characters only get so many boxes, and it's in many ways progressives' fault as much as it is conservatives'. She says male characters are given NUANCE more often, and we should be asking for NUANCED female characters rather than STRONG ones. It was a pretty good essay.

That's a really good point. Asking for "strong" female characters gives the wrong impression, because there's this tendency to just make them male action heroes with tits. It also implies they won't want female characters to be weak or vulnerable, which is just boring. To use video games as a related example, I've seen a lot of people clamoring for female characters to be written better while ignoring the fact that video game writing overall is just hot garbage. They're putting the cart before the horse in order to sate the needs of a political agenda.

Picture always relevant.

The problem is that "strong female characters" means different things to different peolple. It's not really a wrong impression because there really are people that just want generic GRRL power action heroines that quip and their only depth is how much better they are than their male counterparts.

>because there's this tendency to just make them male action heroes with tits.
Male action heroes take damage.

> It also implies they won't want female characters to be weak or vulnerable,
Some don't. To use a comics related example, look at KSD's Carol Danvers. Literally the most interesting thing about her is her cat. All her alcoholism or right wing politics or generally being kind of an asshole? That wasn't empowering, so into the trash it goes.

Hell, look at Wonder Woman. What are her character flaws, exactly? Batman is a paranoid asshole loner. Superman can have a lot of nuance when they want to give it to him. But Diana? She gets one of those lame job interview dodge answers like "She cares TOO much" or "she's TOO awesome".

This is like that comic about that one guy in his 40's who's an actual nerd, but since it's younger girls it's supposed to be attractive.

What if I don't like anime eh you weeb?
What if I only want a western made comic because it caters more to my sensibilities?
Fucking weebs shoving their moeblobs everywere they can.

Isn't nerd/geek an insult?

why the fuck would any person of any gender want to call themselves an insult?

"Hi I'm Brett, I'm a proud shithead"

I'm a 19 male and I can already tell you are a huge faggot

>why the fuck would any person of any gender want to call themselves an insult?
Because it's chic.
>>
>>78181842
It's chic to be selfhating?

I guess so with the hipsters and emo trends.
Another reason why I'm disappointed with the modern world

there is nothing that could possibly happen in this comic that could interest me in the slightest.
It's going to go on sale and /co/ is going to bitch about it for 6 months going on about how much it sucks. One more thread to hide in the catalog every day.

Atwood is really good too. I'd check it out

>It's gotten scathing articles written about it by the usual hambeasts on kotaku.

lies unless I see articles.

I have never seen a single stereotypically feminist "geek" outlet complain about watamote

Glad I stopped following trends at 13 when I realized it doesn't make you popular with other people and just stuck with hoodies to this day. Fuck trying to be like everyone else.
>>
>>78182570
Just google "Watamote kotaku." The one article was written by a guy who was upset that it uses crippling social anxiety and depression as a cute joke.
>>
>>78181895
>>78182807
It's so wonderful that you get to be better than everyone by not participating in any sort of social meme. Not being part of anything clearly is the only alternative to acknowledging fashion.

The kids are calling it "humblebrag" now. When you weren't looking it happened to you.

?
>>
>>78184859
Ironic, huh?
>>
>>78185234
An ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.

In other words, self "hating" in such a way that isn't actually self hating, but rather in a douchey-attention whoring nature. e.g.; "I'm such a nerd"
>>
I'm just gonna say it and I'll deal with the consequences of it - I just don't like women.

I don't have to justify it.

I'm not hurting anyone but myself in the long run.

I just don't like women and I don't see why that's a bad thing.

I'm probably going to catch some heat for saying it but Wonder Woman was founded on an inherently sexist premise (mercy, compassion and empathy are inherently feminine traits) that was untenable once she crossed over with the likes of Superman.

The only reasons those traits are regarded as being especially intrinsic to Diana are because of benevolent sexism and because without them she's got fuck all else. The irony is that, as a result of said preconceived notions, guys like Superman and Batman actually have to SHOW their compassion much more frequently, while Diana's is just kind of a given.

>Solnit told an anecdote about a man at a party who said he had heard she had written some books. She began to talk about her most recent book at the time, on Eadweard Muybridge, whereupon the man cut her off and asked if she had "heard about the very important Muybridge book that came out this year" – not considering that it might be (as, in fact, it was) Solnit's book.[10]
Why the fuck is it wrong for someone to not assume the person they'd meet at a party is an "important author". How the fuck is that-
No, wait. She mentions her book being written on Muybridge, he asks if she's heard about the new Muybridge book, and doesn't initially consider that she wrote the book he's heard of. How the fuck is that mansplaining? That's a guy at a party who's had a few drinks not putting 2 and two together. Even moreso that's ONE GUY.
>>
>>78186890
Men have much better penises anyway.
>>
>>78188666
Well said, Satan.
>>
>>78187701

...huh. that's a very good point.
>>
>>78177268
Nope. People love to show themselves above others. Men "mansplain" other men too. It makes us feel good about being "more" than other people.
But no, you have to make it a "sexist" thing.
>>
>>78188328

Well it's kind of a cunt move to hear somebody say they just wrote a book on a topic, interrupt them, and ask if they've read a more important book on the topic
>>
>>78186890

Well, generally, disliking a group of strangers is considered a bad thing, particularly if it's a wide swath of people, particularly if it's an entire race of people, or in this case half the human race.

You don't have to defend yourself, but don't act like you're the victim of some unfair social standard, or else you may as well be a woman yourself.

>>78189231
Well yeah, naturally, but they're at a party so I'm assuming the guy's had a few. It's a dick move, sure, but so is writing an article citing that incident as evidence of a sex-specific condescension tactic. Like, maybe the dude just was curious if she was aware there was another thing on the subject. Assuming the random person you're talking to is that writer of the big important book is presumptuous on a higher level than not thinking so.

What funniest is, in her rush to feel righteous indignation, she completely glosses over the fact that the guy basically complimented her book.
