jesus you people really do exist.

I read the first ~20 issues as they were coming out. It's great. If Punisher at all deserves to be on the list, the Ennis Max material is what should represent it. I don't disagree.

But if you're gonna get on to someone for a SEEMINGLY pleb-tier choice, and then use IT GOT MOVIE as a reason, maybe don't also suggest one of the handful of Marvel properties THAT ALSO HAS A FUCKING MOVIE

Seth Fisher, what a singular m/s talent, RIP. But, I couldn't approve on this basis alone, personally.
My choice off the top of my head for being one of the first autobio comics, the first comic (or any other publication, to my knowledge) to deal with OCD (before it existed as a medical diagnosis!) and also because it is definitely "Art" with a capital "A"--pure, untrammelled, visually refined self-expression. Great comic and I love Darrow (and Miller up 'til DKR2) but no way top 100. How come no one talks about the almost contemporaneous Give Me Liberty on here? Not that I'd put that in the top 100, either.
>>78137351
Is it really that good? I mean, I've only read about five issues and whilst I know he's a great cartoonist his art just really turns me off. You prefer this over the Alex stuff, yeah?

Not on the same level as the rest of the list.

>Top 10 non cape shit

Enemy Ace isn't on that level and Sandman is the most overrated comic ever.

DeCarlo/Doyle Archie should be on there. Rosa's Duck comics should as well. I'd also recommend Hitman. Planetary probably deserves consideration. As does Busiek's Conan.

I've read more bacchus then I have Alec, but yeah I dig it more. Campbell's best work artistically IMO
>>
>>78138248
Okay, I'll give it a go then, Anon. Read about half The Complete Alex in bits and bobs over the years then got a copy outta the library and read the whole thing. Very good, varied art. I DID like his art in From Hell A LOT for some reason....I saw a great Bacchus double-page splash advertisement in the back of an old Cerebus which was fucking brilliant.....I just kind of take issue with the idea that a sketchy or "uncontrolled"-looking line is somehow more "expressive" than a measured, controlled one (not that Campbell has EVER made that claim to my knowledge but a fair few of his admirers and "comics lit. 101" types have done). But, yeah, great, great cartoonist, undoubtedly, even though he's not my usual cup of tea.

You can't put everything in. I tried to stick to shut that heavily influenced other creators and revolutized comic book medium in some small way. Something that can teach other how to do comics properly

Enemy Ace might not be as flashy as the other books or even the better known of Kubert's works like Sgt Rock but Ace was a game changer. Take a look at the vertical paneling and layouts used to convey dogfight in the air. Get use of space and they're beautiful to look at. If you think about it he was an antihero during the counterculture movement and he was based on a German war hero. Pretty ballsy stuff and even if the creators didn't intend for the comic to come of as anti war, the readers did pick up these themes as the creators were vets. Kurtzman had some great war stories too.

Plantery was thought about I swear. I just didn't pull the trigger, love the lore but it terms of actual craft Ellis' Athuority was a game changer, made the whole industry notice the wide panel motif and it's stuck everyone is using it still to this day.

I like Busiek's Conan and it be overall better than Roy's Conan the Barbarian ongoing but that can't beat Savage Sword of Conan.

Kungpow.jpeg
>I implore to reconsidure
Reread the Defenders. I like Man-Thing better but Defenders is just as good as any cape comic and still retaining that Gerber touch

I agree with everything else. I tended to side with the more influential run that's why Rosa didn't make it as Bark's Duck influenced everyone see Raiders of the Lost Arc.

"Pekar also wrote two graphic novels which are not officially labeled American Splendor but which should arguably be considered part of it: Our Cancer Year (Four Walls Eight Windows, 1994), co-written with Pekar's wife Joyce Brabner and illustrated by Frank Stack, covering the year when Pekar was diagnosed with cancer; and The Quitter (DC Comics, 2005), illustrated by Dean Haspiel, which deals with Pekar's youth."

Who owns physical copies of comics in the TCJ list, and how many of the comics do you own, Anon's?! Not saying the TCJ list is some sort of arbitrator of comics taste but...it is.

>>78148181
Well after a look through the list I think I agree with about a quarter of the list (Watchmen, Foster's Prince Valiant, Peanuts, Pogo, Ditko's Spider-Man era, McCay's Little Nemo, Kurtzman's MAD, the Hernandez stuff, Kirby, Eisner, Barks, Cole, and others) And most of the list I can't say for certain since I haven't read them or read enough of them.

But then there's some like EC's horror stories which, while the art was great, and has a historical significance, the stories could get really repetitive-feeling.

Hooded Utilitarian also did a top 100 list of their own, or rather a top 115:

http://www.hoodedutilitarian.com/2011/08/the-top-115/

Usually I don't really care for some of the people who write on that site but the list was one of the best things on there.

That list is actually not all that far from the stuff /co/ generally likes. There's even some stuff from the Big 2 like the Kirby/Lee FF run.

I was surprised how much Moore dominates the list. I wonder if TCJ still feels that way.
>>
>>78148421
>you shouldn't like anyone who makes articles on that site.

I think there's like two or three people whose articles are okay, or at least tolerable.

>The idiots on TCJ don't even like them

To be fair, some of them did start out writing at TCJ in the first place. Noah Berlatsky and Ng Suat Tong used to write for TCJ before writing for HU, I think. And HU did used to be part of TCJ for a year or two before some kind of split happened and Gary Groth got into an online argument with Berlatsky at one point.

Could you possibly scan the issue? It's not so easy to come by since it's so wanted.

Yeah but for really intelligent analysis not just HEY GUISE DIS COMIK IZ GRET The Hooded Utilitarian is hard to beat. Some of the writers...regular readers know how Noah Berlatsky, for instance, can be, Mr:" Maus is rubbish and overrated and so is Jimmy Corrigan" seems to be disliked by A LOT of folks but is capable of writing good articles...

I OWN exactly 33 of the comics on the list, wait no 35 but have read roughly half.

>>78148600
I shall venture into the attic today and find it for you, Anon. What do you want scanning, the whole thing?! Re-reading the list I'm surprised by the amount of crap on there (not a lot, but still...)...Doonesbury would NOT be on there today, and Pogo at #3....it's good but not THAT great. And Pat Oliphant?! Hah, the left-leaning TCJ would have egg all over their faces were he included today.....

>>
>>78149308
you're fundamentally arguing that "funnybooks" aren't worth taking seriously for critical discourse and, by implication, cannot be "Art".
Don't get me wrong, people who take ANYTHING too seriously and are SOOO po-faced are a bit full of themselves...but the cartoonist James Romberger, for one, has submitted great articles on, off the top of my head, Harkham's newest Crickets story arc, Toth and something about naturalism vs. "cartoonily" drawn comics? And he's no fucking idiot.
>>

Well, there was no SJW stuff in the Romberger articles but I respectfully disagree with you.
>>
>>78149264
>but is capable of writing good articles...

On the surface, sure. Here's the thing, if he did like a few mistakes or misrepresentations, then I could let that slide. I could even overlook the constant contrarianship. But I've seen his stuff in the past. Seven years ago I thought he's just going through a contrarian phase and maybe he'll grow out of it, he has potential.

Seven years later and he's doing stupid things like arguing that his usage of "uncanny valley" to describe the Peanuts Movie art style was correct or the fiasco in that article about how he felt Orange is the New Black misrepresents males (not to mention the comments section of that article, which pretty much summed up his methods to me).

I'm really no longer sure about his capability of writing good articles.
>>
>>78149264
>I shall venture into the attic today and find it for you, Anon. What do you want scanning, the whole thing?! Re-reading the list I'm surprised by the amount of crap on there (not a lot, but still...)...
If you'd be willing. A good amount of the journal issues have been scanned except #210, 208 and 213 closest to it. It might be in the archive (http://www.tcj.com/category/tcj-archive/1990s/1999/) but or does it only have the Kenneth Smith interview? Can you check that if you're registered as a member -- I've seen you posting there at least.

>Doonesbury would NOT be on there today, and Pogo at #3....it's good but not THAT great. And Pat Oliphant?! Hah, the left-leaning TCJ would have egg all over their faces were he included today.....
Yeah, it's gotten some flack (even from Kim Thompson himself) for some of the choices (Doonesbury, Denis the Menace, Love and Rockets getting 5 spots instead of 2, having "cartoon" strips) and leaving choices out like Cerebus and The Far Side.
>>
>>
>>78149584
>>
>>78149450
Oh God that "uncanny valley" Peanuts argument was embarrassing, man! You're totally right he's a born contrarian, when I said "is still capable of writing good articles" I didn't necessarily mean for HU--he's written a few good, non-contentious pieces for local American big-city newspapers, I've only seen reviews (in his non-HU pieces, maybe he was asked to tone down his contrary snark?, I dunno--haven't read the Orange Is The New Black debacle (haven't even seen the show, any good?) but will try and find it!

comicscomics (as you probably know, was edited by the team who now edit the online tcj) was my idea of an almost perfect comics site. Plenty of input from pros in the comments section, really interesting articles not just focusing on artcomix but Kirby, Ditko, Caniff, Sickles, Toth et al....they had cartoonists write articles, Santoro would do his little "scene reports"....I wish tcj.com was more like it, I really do. Sometimes there'd be like 150-odd comments on a comicscomics article; tcj.com, well, the most I've seen was when Kim Thompson offered to print Cerebus publicly and that got maybe 80-odd but that was a RARE exception!

>>78149503
Yeah, unfortunately ya hafta be a member to get access to the full archives...I'd rather just E-Bay any issues that I've missed of particular significance to my tastes, to be honest. Kenneth Smith....why is that name ringing a massive bell?! I think it has a big-ish piece on Michael Vrana who was a failed alt comix publisher--kind of a Bill Marks for the late nineties--or I might be getting muddled up, anon. I keep 7 or 8 TCJ's on my shelf which are of particular significance, either they're signed by someone or have pieces on the "favourite of my favourites" cartoonists, if that makes sense (I'm told my posts usually don't!)....>>78149584 whoa someone beat me to it while we were chit-chatting! Quite a bit of it was ghosted by Eisner's studio...but I guess that's like having capestuff "assembly line" comics in the list. I'm nitpicking; I approve, totally, a lotta the writing in his GN's is so melodramatic, overdone and sometimes just, well, CHEESEY that maybe The Spirit IS the better choice....it truly showcased his visual inventiveness in a way that most of his more personal work never surpassed AND had some great story arcs....I have exactly three consecutive issues of the Kitchen Sink Spirit Magazine and they're good shit, indeed.
Eisner hadda have something on here, if not just for his tremendous influence and shaping of the medium. Cheers, Anon.

Not so much his Arcade or UG period but Gary Groth gave a particularly harsh assessment of Raw when it came out and, really, they've been inclined to give him a hard time since (though in later issues they seemed to have warmed to each other considerably...#300, with the inter-generational discussions had a great conversation between Kevin Huizenga and Spiegleman. There were m/s guys, too; Frank Quitely and Dave Gibbons, Dennis O'Neil and Matt Fraction) but I think they're "cool", now.

Nah, that's right, his writing really hasn't held up as well as his art. Was it a recent Inkstuds episode? I hadn't listened to it for about a year and change then recently listened to the Sacha Mardou episode (I always had a feeling she was a Yorkshire lass!) which was ace. Robin McConnell just rubs me up the wrong way with his blatantly forced laugh, though. The guest will say something (very) mildly amusing and he'll suddenly pitch into gales of extremely fake-sounding laughter...and his questions are a bit...vacuous, sometimes yet I respect the guy; he knows his shit, dude even has a Malky Duff interview in the archive (sorry to sound patronising but if ya didn't know he's this pretty avant-garde Scottish self-publisher, he's got some stuff on Top Shelf 2.0, or he did, if TS 2.0 is still a thing)!

I know Groth is like Marmite--you love him or hate him, there's no middle ground but even if you do hate him the guy deserves respect IF ONLY for taking a chance on Los Bros. and Clowes! And Crumb deserved a chronological collection of his stuff, well presented...and now Fanta books are genuine objects of beauty....

Sorry, anon, crazy digression, there!

It was "our friend" Noah Berlatsky who wrote the big anti-Maus tirade, also there was a thing in the early 2000's where Danny Hellman sent an satirical, parodic e-mail claiming to be notorious lefty "cartoonist" Ted Rall to ( I think) the editors of the Village Voice referring to a piece Rall had written for the paper (might not've been the Village Voice, coulda been the New York Times or whatever). Anyway Rall had written this big piece portraying Spiegleman as this kind of "Godfather" figure of cartooning, especially in New York, claiming he had the power to "stop a cartoonists career dead in it's tracks" and that he'd done it "many times before" etc, etc...it resulted in Rall suing Hellman; Hellman (or "Dirty Danny" as he's sometimes known as) responded with a fundraising anthology (continued...)

Yeah, Robin's laugh can be annoying and he's a bit quiet or it's just the quality of the sound in some of the episodes but overall he's a good guy.

Groth is a very important guy for comics for lots of things for editing, publishing, interviews, critique and etc.

There's also the fact that Spiegelman acts as an ambassador/a spokesman for comics while being an old out touch fart.

...a funraising anthology called "Legal Action Comics" volumes 1 & 2, containing lots of new and never-reprinted work by some of the top "alternative" cartoonists (and some really shitty ones, as well!), they're worth checking out if only for the back story and there IS some good material in them.
As for the "Spiegleman is only good at exploiting tragedies" I'd never really heard that charge levelled at him. Like his "Breakdowns" collection was pretty good, even if it consisted of almost purely "formally experimental" from his early years...like the skeleton page who moves and cartwheels(as a b & w drawing) but the zip-a tone moire pattern he's "coloured" with in the first panel is always one panel behind what the line drawing of the skeleton is doing...am I making sense?! Probably not...anyway TCJ really went to town on his "Little Lit" stories, saying he'd always had a: "rough, unfinished line"...ripped the shit outta him...So it's fair to say his "stock" has maybe fallen in recent years....

Amazing comic and Bodyworld is just some out-there shit....he could get a job writing for Marvel or Image like THAT on the basis of the latter story...come to think of it his Spidey/Sinestro comic in Strange Tales was ace, the one in volume 1 with Dr. Strange....less so. Along with Deforge probably the most talented, innovative cartoonist of his generation. So yeah, Bodyworld, Bellybuton, both DEFINITELY approved!

how? a jew invented comics so we have to automatically nominate this book? if anything that supports my points its pandering.. who the fuck cares who invented comics. what its got to do with maus being average as fuck?

Jews don't automatically make a comic good, but Jews are intertwined with the history of comics, so if you like comics then you should stop announcing on /co/ that you're afraid of Jews.

I didn't say that. At all. Kirby was Jewish, Superman was created by two Jews...Kurtzman, Jewish...Eisner...Cape comics, let alone the medium as a whole, would maybe not exist without those innovators (who just happened to be Jewish). My point is you seem to have something against the Hebrew faith...I'm not imagining it, am I?! Why is Maus "average as fuck"? Not many comics have the same emotional weight whilst being funny and angsty...plus it was innovative and Spiegleman's process was integral to it's kind of "diary-like" feel...no Joe Sacco comic journalism without Maus, I'm fairly sure of that....
>>78153337
Of course a Jewish creator doesn't make a comic "automatically good" I was just pointing out that it's kind of spitting in the face of the architects every time some one on here makes an anti-Jewish statement and starts with the "good goy" shit.

Yup, Dyspeptic Ouroboros Burn all The Interviews is ringing bells like Quasimodo, I'm pretty sure it's the one I'm thinking of but thanks Anon will re-read!
Heh. I remember that old Harvey Pekar interview where he's giving Groth all kinds of hell for being a gun-nut! They're both giving good arguments but you get the sense it's good natured. Funny stuff...

I'm down to Groth's second reply and have to quit.

Getting too many Sim VS Gary/Kim comment war flashbacks.

Heheh you're pretty old school yeah, Anon, if you can remember the whole "Tweedledee and Teedledum" Groth/Thompson versus Sim "debates"! "....And still, the hard questions remain...". To be fair neither side really comported themselves with, shall we say, chivalric behaviour back then, though, did they!?! Still, fucking cool of Groth and Thompson to print Sim's "Tweedledum & Tweedledee" ( or was it actually "Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber?!) "can you give us a cover blurb for Palestine?", let it be said that the Fanta founders were able to TAKE IT as well as dish it out!

Fair enough mate, but I will say this--when he's good (say, reviewing or interviewing--The Deitch Family interview was particularly good and his overview of Ralph Steadman's career was brilliant, two recent (ish) pieces that come to mind), he's GREAT, when he's bad, he just makes me disappointed, really...I tell you a TCJ writer who I really like--he tends to "specialise" in the old UG cats (he did the last great S.Clay Wilson interview before his strange accident), a writer called Bob Levin and he's a lot, lot LOT less vitriolic than "The Big Double G". In fact most Journal writers were. RC Harvey's preddy cool as well
>>
>>78158561
Groth's interviews are generally great. I used to think his criticism was great but then kind of realized a lot of it didn't hold up that well. But I'll take him over Berlatsky and the rest any day.

This is such a stupid thread, you should honestly have people send in like 25 works to an e-mail and rank them with #1 getting 25 points and #2 getting 24 and so on. And then tally them up, having a random bunch of people just saying something is approved is beyond absurd if you want to actually come up with a serious list. Forcing people to send in a top 25 weeds out shitposters and has people actually think about what they would consider the 25 best comics.
