I'm still waiting for the "if you arrest the hostage-taker, you'll be just as bad!" speech.
>>
>>78123730
Well you can't, even superman can't literally be everywhere at once barring one-off times where he becomes omnipotent for reasons.

>>78124468
Thats just retarded, kill one psycho who's going around killing loads of innocent people doesn't make you just as bad as him even if you consider killing of any sort of as a terrible sin.
You would have to kill alot more people for alot more meaningless reasons than that which you killed him to be as bad as the guy you took out.
>>
>>78124468
Woulnt that depend on the sitsuation, like if the killers completely vulnerable and in no way able to harm anyone in any way, is it really nessecary to kill them?
>>
>>78124791
Yeah, because then he can just come back to hurt or kill more people. Nice logic.

>>
>>78124876
With that logic you could kill anybody for any reason so they don't "do it again".
>>
>>78124876
But, provided the fictional setting we're talking about has similar laws to our own, that actually is murder, that would be an correct example of were killing a murderer makes you a murderer.

If they are still a threat then it's self-defense or acting to save someone else's life, but unless the setting has the main character as a judge Dredd type then they are not in a position to sentence the villain on the spot lawfully.

It's true. though, you can't save everyone. Convincing yourself otherwise will only lead you to emotional and mental anguish when you do you fail.

It's just not one of those things superhero stories should really be commenting on. They need recurring villians, but IRL that's not a thing that happens. So they apply IRL logic to a fantastical situation where it's entirely inappropriate. Yeah, IRL violent prisoners very, very rarely ever escape from custody and most of the "escapes" each year are nonviolent offenders who just plain walked out when they weren't allowed to and had to be picked back up by police.

But fantasy villains often have powers that prevent them from ever being meaningfully restrained, they're basically always armed and capable of killing and they won't put down that "gun". To let them live would be like letting an active shooter leave after police have him surrounded, either they lay down their gun (or permanently switch off their superpowers) and surrender, they kill themselves, or the police kill them. Rarely do these stories feature a way to forcibly and reliably disarm supervillains to take them into custody, and even if they do the bad guy breaks out of jail or stops being banished or manages to come back and continue killing.

And then there's the strange video game logic where some dude karate chops a bunch of heavily armed guards and gets the bad ending if he chooses to use guns because it was unnecessary the whole time when FISTS were an option. I mean, yeah, that works when you can reload saves forever, but it's not really worthwhile commentary on anything in the real world. It's the opposite problem, trying to apply fantasy logic to IRL situations.

a valid point because a lot of times that speech marks the moment a series stops being fun and starts getting preachy about stuff that has no real bearing on anything. it's not like it's really meaningful life advice for the vast majority of people who don't deal with life and death situations, and it's not like these superheroes are dealing with particularly stubborn friends making bad life decisions.
