There was a thread yesterday about "character defining pages", and somebody posted this one about Carol Danvers, back when she was still Ms. Marvel. One reply to it got me:
>I'm tired of writers thinking she was ever a good person.

I thought all there was to Carol was that she was a fighter pilot. Is she supposed to be a bitch or something?
>>
>>78119521
She had a severe alcoholism problem that led to her wounding Lockjaw and getting kicked out of the Avengers.

That and she's actually always been a right-wing hawk in terms of politics, but that's another thing KSD chose to ignore.

I never read that shit but from what I understand she has some Kree genes in her or something which makes her more susceptible to enjoying being a bloodthirsty warrior.

And that pages looks like she killed some, I don't know, a really fruity Skrull, so she probably has a HUGE Kree boner.

Mhm.
>>
>>78119521
she's a loose cannon, but in the cowboy cop kind of way rather than a 'just nuked the white house' way you normally see in supers
>>
>>78119521

I never read too much into that scene, nowhere near as much as others seem to find. Earth was undergoing a full-scale alien invasion. With super-powered troops. Carol is ex-military, she isn't going to have a Silver Age "no killing allowed" mentality, especially not during a time of war.

It was just a way to differentiate her from, say, Spidey's pollyanna no-killing stance and a soldier's viewpoint of the matter. "invade *my* home? you're going to die now, and i'm going to take what little enjoyment i'll get today out of watching you expire".
>>
>>78119521
I thought her defining moment was her being raped by her son from the future
>>
>>78119562
I kind of want to see Judge Danvers in Mega City One now.
>>
And my favorite quote:
>What I like about Carol is that she pulls off the Maverick archetype without being two-dimensional about it. She's what Hal Jordan would be if Hal were a good character. She's got Tony Stark's swagger and over-abundance of confidence, Steve Roger's discipline and military training, and raw power enough to rival Thor (unless Aaron is writing him it seems). And despite all that, she's still very much her own character, with her own flavors of compassionate and flippant and humorous. If I had to sum Carol up in one word, it'd be "liberation" and that's a beautiful thing.
>>
>>78119569
He wasn't really her son though, it was just some space prince or something who birthed himself into our dimension through Carol.

The fact that the commenter can only explain why she loves Carol by saying she's better than more popular male heroes (of which she obviously is ignorant) speaks volumes as to why she ACTUALLY likes the character. "Fans" like this drag the character down. Fucking dumbasses.

Carol also blatantly broke the Avengers's no-kill policy during Kang Dynasty, impaling the Master of the Earth with a hunk of metal so that earth could take control of the defensive technology he was using to blackmail the planet with.

She was visibly shocked when they aquitted her actions as understandable under the circumstances. Kang blowing up washington DC and killing everyone who couldn't be evacuated because of MoE's defenses trapping them there probably had something to do with it.

see McCarthyism. Any laws targeting certain 'undesirables' in theory are instead used to disenfranchise anyone that poses a potential threat to the establishment.

This was before Bendis-chan turned them into the US military. They had meetings and their own rules and everything.

Anyway what I liked about that arc was that Carol turned herself in. It was a great way of showing how she'd changed and grown from the Carol in the beginning of Buisek's run who screamed and ranted and blamed everyone else for her booze problem. She'd visibly matured. It was a neat little bookend for Buisek's run.

Rogue stole all her memories and powers and personality.
So some time later after Carol regained some of her memories when they met Carole bitched at Rogue, and Rogue got mad at Caro for all the shit that she had take from Carol's brain. This was also part of carol's personality that rogue had absorbed, to be sure.

It pisses me off because KSD completely ignored Reed's run. Half of Carol's solo publishing history and it's all swept under the rug with mind wipes. I haven't read it so I can't comment on it specifially, but generally when a corporation wants to push someone or somethign as their face and representative, as Marvel is tring to do with Carol as their prominent female hero, hey try to clean them up removing all the flaws that made them interesting and turning them into oring mary sues because they beliee to make the public love them they have to show how everyone loves them in universe too.
It's happened to Superman too, who has been gradually turned into space jesus.
I' not saying that there aren't interesting superman stories, but the perception that people have of him, the perception that DC has been pushing for decades is that of a perfect boy scout that everybody adores.
While if you read his stories up to the 70es you get crazy whacky space adventures with sometimes a bit of superdickery here and there.

Depends on definitions of the political spectrum but Carol has always been strongly pro-military, on the frontline of any war that pops up, and during Civil War was instrumental in sustaining the rule of a new law through "just force". When the Avengers have internal conflicts owing to a clash of ideals, priorities or motivations, Carol is almost always on the side that's part of the state. That was the case in Civil War and in Time Runs Out; the only time that really changed was when the Avengers were taken over by Norman Osborn and Carol was absolutely sure the team was full of villains. At one point she was literally working for CIA counter-intelligence. She generally emphasizes the needs of the many over the needs of the few.

People with those characteristics are typically on the right end of the spectrum. Most of the military consists of conservatives; Carol is military, ex-CIA and on several occasions a literal government superweapon.

CW would have been a nice chance to introduce her as Captain American's new foil now that they're losing RDJ.
Air force pilot, kidnapped and experimented upon by the Chitauri, rescued and introduced in the supersoldier program, she sees things more from the side of stability and the Law while Cap is about idealism and Justice, she's ready for battle and is deployed in the middle of the Civil War.

Well, they're going with a Capt. Marvel movie anyway.

All I want from it?

A Captain Marvel Team Up. Carol, Monica, and Karla Soften having to team up to face a greater enemy. Like, Karla's the secondary baddy who does a last minute 'face' turn to help them save the day.
>>
>>78132434
Actually yeah, it would have been the perfect contrast; Carol is pro-military, Cap is more pro-soldiers; Carol is loyal to her country, Cap is only loyal to the dream, etc etc. It would fit with Civil War's themes.

But no, it's about Bucky and Tony competing to be Steve's husbando

yeah, and that all the more reason to introduce her in a movie like CW leading then to her own movie

They're not even that Alpha Flight. It's a new team completely unrelated to the Canadian Alpha Flight

Reading through this thread peaked my curiosity. Any recommendations?

So she got angry and tried to murder her AU doppleganger, and instead ended up almost killing herself, and THIS chick is the one that Tony Stark sends in to defuse complex situations with unregistered superheroes?

Man, I hate this chick.

Aw man, I love the "there's another version of me running through the multiverse murdering all other versions of me" trope.

Reed's run gets very weird (MODOK embryos?) near the end and has tons of event tie-ins but is generally looked upon favorably.

KSD's run is love it or hate it. You should at least try the first few issues - even if you end up hating the writing Dexter Soy's art is great.

Busiek's Iron Man vol. 3 and Avengers vol. 3 both had great Carol stuff, including the alcoholism phase. Single-handedly blowing up Damocles base using its own reactor is probably still the most badass thing she's ever done.

Also, she was pretty great as Commander Shepard in Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

>KSD's run is love it or hate it. You should at least try the first few issues - even if you end up hating the writing Dexter Soy's art is great.

Really, when it comes down to it, KSD blew her thematic load within the first few issues. What should've been "Rebirth" for Carol ended feeling more like the final issues of a dwindling ongoing.

And this is the person that inspired Kamala Khan? Sheesh, is she in for a treat when she finds out.

They've said there's returning members

Most of them are mutants so they probably went to space because of terrigen poisoning
