I won't have it out by then.

I tried hard, and wanted to get it and a few other updates out before the campaign ended, but I just couldn't get everything done in time. The writing was more complex than I thought, and I also lost a lot more time than anticipated due to merchandising stuff. I lost an entire day talking to people who sell shipping supplies!

I'm satisfied with the outcome. It's a lot lower than the initial interest polls I did, but that's expected - spending money is a lot harder than just /saying/ you'll spend money. Enough orders were still put in that I get pretty good rates on the production, which was basically the goal of crowdfunding it like this.

I'm not sure if it counts as "projecting" to assume other people have had similar experiences to me! I mean, yeah, there are definitely some good clients out there who will appreciate whatever you draw for them simply because you drew it, but that sort of person is pretty rare until you start to become popular. And once you actually have that level of social reach, it's just more appealing to choose your own things to draw.

There are probably some artists who legitimately love commission work. But for the most part, I think there's a reason almost every artist has some big comic project they're perpetually planning. They're aspiring to reach the point where they no longer have to design restaurant menus and draw fursonas, and they can just make a living off the things they want to draw.

I might. At the very least I'm going to check in with that program for teenage mothers I gave all those Duplo boxes to last time, see if they want me to do it again.

I wanted to try to get all the merchandise produced in 1.5 weeks and sent by Christmas, but Ch'marr told me that's stupid and unrealistic and I can't pack 1000 boxes in four days. I think he's WRONG, but I also recognize that he has historically never been wrong, ever.

For real, though, I'm not playing you guys or anything. Even when I try something weird to see what the reaction will be, I'm pretty overt about exactly what I'm doing and why. If I find something that works, I want people to be able to imitate it. If I find something that doesn't work, I want people to be able to avoid it.

Like, even the fact that I could crowdfund regular webcomic merchandise like this is pretty significant. I think I mentioned it in another thread, but by buying the tees in bulk I'm making roughly 4x as much off each sale as a creator who sells them through a service like Redbubble. That means a webcomic author could conceivably use this approach to become self-sufficient with 1/4 the fanbase usually required. At least, assuming I can repeat it later.

For now, though, I'm just gonna sleep so I can spend tomorrow drawing cats and putting together some kind of merchandise progress bar.

Once many years ago while unemployed I had a friend do some writing for me for a game contest under the promise he's get a Chilli's gift card I had if we won. Most artists think it's out of their price range, but there are always people willing to help out for a very low fee, or even just because they want to be involved in a more popular project, and I brought up that and Gift Card guy as an example.

SA's assessment, though, was that you should never pay an artist below what they deserve, even if that is out of your price range. And if you can't afford it, then you should just avoid getting help - even if the artist needs money and is willing to work within your price range.

I guess I can get where the backlash is coming from, since there's this sort of boogeyman im the artist community of the Evil Businessman who manipulates artists into working with him for peanuts. There are tons of artists out there who NEED money, though, and are willing to help out on things for very low costs simply because they have nothing else to do for money. If people with low incomes can commission help from people with even lower incomes (or who are willing to help out for free) in a way that is mutually beneficial and consented, I think that needs to be encouraged. Artists going at things solo because they think they can't afford help only keeps everyone poor.

I don't know, at least that's how I look at it. These days if I'm working with someone who wants to be paid, I pay them very well, but I only even have that ability because I got a lot of free and low-cost help back when I had much less money.

These things are basically just free money for well-known artists, since they're the ones who can post about the contest in front of ten thousand social media followers and walk away with the prize. Ive had my ass kicked by those sort of competitors enough that, now that I was able, I decided to do the exact same thing but play it up as an evil act.

I'm on good terms with the people I beat out. I mean, a bunch of you bought a shirt Samba designed. She and Atryl understand what I was trying to do, and even WLF ended up responding by making their next contest one that was very accommodating to low-reach artists (low prizes given every two weeks and you can only win once). Someone would have a hard time repeating what I did, which is good since such behavior was basically status quo before.

I know, I know... these ones just bother me because they really ARE problems in the art community that keep people from having upward mobility. A lot of the "proper" artist behavior is very biased toward helping people with connections/wealth and inhibiting their competition.

That said, what are your suggestions for how to not be a lazy ass? I spend way more time coming up with creative ideas for my tabletop roleplaying campaign than I do working on the stories I'm supposed to be writing, and I can't stop.
