Looking to get some feedback in a title I'm writing/colouring while a buddy pencils/inks.

>the pitch
A Thunderbirds style team action story, introduced with some standard violence and explosions. They're a private rescue outfit who use a fleet of high-tech emergency vehicles to save the day, run by a father and his son.

>progress?
First page is mostly done, a twenty-seven page 'first issue' has been scripted through. Lot of design sketches from either me (the ugly ones), artist buddy (the neater ones), or vehicle designer buddy (the technical ones), showcasing some of those here.

>not much to go on yet, I know, but hopefully be able to show progress on this quite rapidly as we build momentum.

Any advice on doing speech bubbles and lettering? Any good license-free fonts people like using?

Any way to get speech bubbles without drawing them that doesn't look too disjointed and out-of-place on the artwork?
>>
>>78082876

Yeah, I feel a bit cheap having them fight a clear villain and henchmen (the SPOOK squad on page one).

I'd really like to do a story where there isn't a villain and the focus is ACTION in a disaster, but I realise that's a challenge.

Team play and human interaction to offset maybe?

Free fonts for comic makers. This could probably do with adding to the Goodie Bag.

Speechballoon wise, if you're using Photoshop or Manga/Clip Studio, then you'll need to know how to use the vector path tool to add and adjust control points. Don't make perfect ellipses.

I was kind of banking on the readership likely to take offence at that being long dead at this point.

I could be wrong, but I think the spy/Cold War connotation is a bit more the first response these days.

Plus to these Limey ears it sounds like a cheap knock-off of SPECTRE, like a childish Beano version, which was vaguely my reasoning behind it.

Trying to make a short comic named Sunday Night Loser Fight.

It's about six individuals who have the same reoccurring dream every sunday: they're contestants on an alien reality show where they have to fight an alien beast each episode.

The only thing the contestants have in common is that they are complete losers, and have been determined to go nowhere in life.

The contestants consist of three different species, with someone representing the male and female gender of each.

At the start of the whole thing, they all have to play rock paper scissors for six pieces of special equipment that may help them win, but if they tie no one gets the equipment.

Are you stuck in 2009? Buckley's just making an average inoffensive videogame comic with regular updates these days, he seems at least as hard-working at his comic as the posters in this thread are (or claim to be, not a lot of comics being posted here these days).

It's kinda subtle and hard to say. is the girl going to keep dark hair regardless? because that looks good on her. and I like her shoes better in the darkhaired version of her. I think the shorts look cooler but the skirt is a better idea in general.. but hey people can change clothes right.
ducktailhairguy i can't decide if the dot eyes or the other eyes work better on him. I would say change his expression based on emotion?
Tall guy looks better when he's super tall, and the taller version has better footwear too.

Sisters updated. 4 pages.
http://thesisters-comic.com/
http://tapastic.com/episode/239874

Conrad gets fed up with New Mexico, probably because he had to wear a suit and frankly his whole scheme has gotten sidelined after being told to kill Scott. Not that he isn't a terrible person, he just preferred his method of being "too good to be true boyfriend" rather than the whole "let's put fear on the table and murder a guy" plan. But what is done is done.

>>78086361
>>78085725
Tall glasses vamp type is cute. I could see the deadpan expression of glee as someone is disemboweled in front of her. She probably works at the Gap.

Panic guy has a bit of Jim to him, though perhaps I'm just seeing things. Might be the hair. But I like it in general.

>what did he see out the window? what even? why use a hammer? damn cliffhangers.) will be VERY audible

>Wtf is new mexico's deal with dogs? why do they want him killin those? is it part of a spell or something?

Oh that's next week. Legit. Some creative shapeshifting, violence, and nastiness.

Every problem looks like a nail when all you have is a hammer, and considering the various things a shapeshifter could do (like really, killing Scott and infiltrating would've been a better idea) Conrad is a bit slow on the upkeep.

Nothing out the window, just rain. Conrad is getting pissed off. He's using a hammer for destructive purposes, it will be very very audible for good reasons.

In slasher movie terms, the slasher is getting sick of all the being seen behind trees in the woods scenes and now he's opted to bang his machete on the front door and see what happens. Probably to piss off New Mexico or at least convince them that he knows what he is doing.

>New Mexico's deal with dogs.
Well, it is less dogs in general and more the very one specific dog the girls happen to have in the house. Plus Conrad said he doesn't like to kill dogs. But it'll be addressed.

Trying to get back into webcomics after a few years off, something high fantasy related.

When it comes to travelling parties, how big is too big, and how small is too small? I wanted my main cast to be somewhat diverse yet still representative of the fantasy genre, so I wanted the party to have four members but that number could potentially be cut down to three if I eliminate the Straight Man archetype character. With only three characters, however, I'm worried that their interactions will become too repetitive off their individual gimmicks.

As a general thing I've noticed, however, is that the optimal size in popular media for a fantasy party seems to be 5 so it has enough room to accommodate different archetypes.

What does /HYW/ think? Is 5 truly the optimal size? Is 3 too few? What examples of different functioning party sizes exist?
>>
>>78096799

Five is probably an optimal size in games (both video and tabletop), but could be unwieldy when it comes to telling stories.

Off the top of my head:
Robert E Howard's Conan was solo.
Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser were a double act.
The Fellowship of the Ring may have set out as a party of nine, but were later split up into twos and threes.

For my own fantasy gag strips, I have a duo (and I'm beginning to add recurring supporting cast).

It's probably best to come up with a few strong personalities/characters, than have many weak ones; three characters with two traits each, rather than five one-dimensional types.

Think about what group sizes and character types work in other media. Comedy often has double acts and trios. Shows with larger ensemble casts usually focus on one or two at a time, occasionally having everyone together.
>>
>>78097198
>three characters with two traits each, rather than five one-dimensional types
Why not five characters with two traits?
I don't understand the exclusionary nature of the way you're speaking.
>>
>>78097329
In my opinion, if you have an abundance of complex characters it will just take a while to fully explore them all. Having fewer detailed characters allows you to have more focus.

Making my characters cuter everyday.
>>
>>78097431
But you're supposed to really focus on the protagonist and even antagonist in a story, not party members even if they contribute significantly to the progression of the story.
That's where none of that exclusionary talk makes sense, as what difference does it make to have three 2D characters or five when you have a main character to focus on? If anything that would support the argument for less development for characters who aren't the protagonist.

In the LotR movies, for example, all we really get from Gimli and Legolas is that they are friendly rivals. They aren't fleshed out, but are easily more fun to see than the fleshed out characters like Aragorn who have become humdrum by the last film because of their overdevelopment.

I think if you're arguing character definition versus character quantity it's all a wash until you hit 7 or more side characters, but either way my question was a generality referring to cohesiveness of a group rather than their individual characters.

>>
>>78096799
For a webcomic, simple is best. Having too many characters can get confusing fast for first time readers. Unless there's a real need in the story for all of these characters, you should start from a couple and see if it works first before adding more.

2-3 is ideal for humor. Some jokes can be funnier with a second funny man supporting the first. I'm not sure why you would cut out the straight man character, a lot of jokes are heightened by a straight man. But these 3 don't have to rigidly fit into the funny/straight man roles, you can have them alternate depending on the circumstances of the joke.

>I'm not sure why you would cut out the straight man character, a lot of jokes are heightened by a straight man
I guess it would help if I explain a bit about the story idea I have, since it's not meant to be completely funny OR completely serious.

The protagonist is a "human" female warrior who travels from plane to plane fighting extradimensional C'thonic monsters and those that draw from their power. She is somewhat of a straight man character in that she is more serious than those around her, but she is smug and arrogant enough not to fall squarely into that archetype.

The two supporting party members I've decided will be joining her are a 10 year old human squireboy and a sex crazed female elf rogue. The elf often tries to perv on the warrior by doing things like spy on her and the squireboy, who is "too chivalrous for this shit", usually ends up getting blamed for her shenanigans. While the elf is meant to be a complete oddball the squireboy is meant to be more serious, yet not a complete straight man since he's still a boy. The two are meant to play off one another since the boy is honorable and brave while the elf is a sneaky coward.

The actual Straight Man archetype I've been contemplating is a massive male orc warrior. Rather than being a brooding beast or a savage monster I draw inspiration for his personality from bushido and other warrior cultures. He's meant to be a quiet meditative person that is a pariah among his people and now wanders the wastes as a kind of travelling ronin. He is meant to be the true straight man of the party who speaks with the wisdom of a noble, and the only other "good" character that can rival the protagonist's strength.

Since the protagonist is almost a straight man already I thought it might not be necessary to have the orc as an actual party member, and instead relegate him to an integral side character status.

Cont'd

>>
>>78101858
that sounds pretty good to me.
and remember, as bob's burgers showed us, the straight man can still be funny and have his quirks. he just has a better grasp on when it's important to get serious
>>
>>78101858
Keeping the orc around adds that second powerful member to the group, and adds a contrast by which the protagonist can seem flawed compared to.

In any event, the characters aren't meant to be introduced all at once. The reader meets the elf and boy first, then the hero and the villain, then shortly thereafter the orc.

Sorry for this late The concept of the chapter is basically like that Samurai Jack episode with the lion/hunt men.

>The beast king sent out his greatest assassin for jack.
>He did it because Jack assaulted his wife.
>The assassin didn't know where his target live at.
>So, He used his power to cut out all the power through the town. And start scanning through all the houses.
>If he saw a black boy with a blue jacket and named "Jack".
>He will leave a mark on him and hunt him down.

You want me to continue on this? Are you confuse?

How many of you honestly think you'll have a successful webcomic someday, and how many are just doing it as a hobby?
>>
>>78106083
I'm doing it as a hobby. I've got a career.

I'm hoping I'll keep improving and someday I'll make the right connections and hit the big time. I'm not really expecting that to happen, though, it'd be like winning the lottery.

I'd be happy enough that there are people who like my story, and wants to know what happens next.
>>
>>78106083

I probably wouldn't be trying so hard, despite having all these real life obligations, if I didn't think I had a shot at success.

I swing from Schwarzenegger tier motivation to utter disillusionment and hopelessness. If I don't go crazy and stab my drawing hand to a pulp, I can make it.

There's gotta be a part you really enjoy... writing the plot, sketching freely, inking, adding colors... anything. If there's no enthusiasm, then the readers won't get excited either.

Hey /co/, would you read this webcomic?

A pretty normal guy goes around doing his average deeds, but every night towards dusk, He gains superpowers for just a little while, until he is pulled into space, to be a substitute star for another solar system. The time he is in space is from when hes asleep until he begins to wake, going back to earth, and quickly losing his powers for another day of normality.

This has been his life for awhile now, but tension begins to rise as threats to him and those he cares about begin.

He has power, but it is limited. Can he do anything? Will he remain helpless to be ripped from the fight into space night by night?

I'd say, towards a goal; I put myself at like 10%. People do like my stuff, and people seem to care about my thoughts on somethings (though perhaps because I'm willing to give them at length), but in general we're not really all that successful.

We've got around 12k views overall that aren't from bots or whatever those randos on google analytics are, and we've got around 400 readers overall (not counting carryover, minimum of around ~300). We're around 160 pages in.

We have accomplished world building, but now it is a matter of getting things to happen in the world to generate interest. People like the characters (or at least Jam, Beatrice, Sammy and Craig), and I personally like writing Conrad because people hate him for being smug and sort of fully aware of his actions.

We're making about 15 bucks a month. Which pays the dropbox bill, which is nice. I wish we made more because we'd like to do mini little side-stories, which just aren't feasible given we do 3-4 pages a week and our own stuff on the side plus work. And people do tell us we have the potential to be bigger, but that's down the line.

I'd gauge us lower, but we're almost done with telling this first story, and we'll have full graphic novel length to this first arc when it is done. And really that is a sense of accomplishment.

We're not back to the drawing board, and we're fighting the good fight; and eventually someday we might make something from all this. Worst case scenario, we'll just have made something complete; which isn't all that shabby.

So like, I don't feel disheartened. I'm happy with what we have so far, I hope to see it grow, I have doubts it will diminish without extravagant effort on our part.
>>
>>78109629
>we
This is not a solo ambition?
>>
>>78109782
Artist and writer.
I, the writer, am the one who generally frequents /co/ because I frankly enjoy the atmosphere. The artist comes sometimes when I'm sick or busy. We've been buds for a good long bit and the Sisters is mostly us making some old ideas work.

It isn't a solo dealio, though credit to Pete; as he does all the layout and art. Format is a bit wonkier than the traditional model, but he can do more with angles than me and I trust him to know what looks good (and more often than not, it does work out). So while it being a partnership does make it seem a bit less ambitious a project, what remains of my original intentions when the page comes out is generally my tone, mood, and dialogue with his idea for set, stage direction and et cetera put in motion. I'm the script, maybe the actors; he's the director, designer, and generally the actors. If that helps put it in perspective.

But I will say that putting together a production bible was something he appreciated and certainly helped make it a bit more stable.

So yeah, not a solo ambition. It was once, on his end. It is better now. We assure you.

Well thanks anons, we will. It does mean a lot to be appreciated, and I'm happy where we are considering we only launched in May. We've made good progress and we're on track to end this arc in a few months, after which we'll hopefully be able to shill it a bit more.

Soon as I finish this last batch of client work, I ought to be able to get to work on a side-story thing we're gonna sell for like 3 bucks with some nice illustrations which we're gonna try to do monthly/bi-monthly. Rotate out the illustrations, maybe sell them as triptych prints.

I'm a /tg/ native originally, I could bash out a simple RPG system for it if I wanted to (K6BD just did a pseudo-powered by the Apocalypse hack). There really is a lack of low powered magic games; but it also doesn't really fit thematically.

Who knows. We're doing okay enough, we'd like to do more if time and effort allowed.

>>
>>78111417
Stories are some of the most powerful things mankind can create. They can influence entire cultures and change the outlook of individuals on an infinite number of issues. Regardless of what a person believes, if they have the capacity to put themselves into the shoes of a character and walk their life then they find themselves growing as a person.

I love that. I love stories that make people grow, and teach people how to deal with things that normally aren't an issue. I love stories that evolve how someone looks at the world around them, and I feel like there should be more of them. There are too many stories that are mindless violence or mindless drama, and not enough that pull at base emotions and use them to teach. That's my goal: I want to change people for the better, even if it's just a little. Consider my attempt to influence butterfly effect for the better.

Serious question guys: is it okay to start your first webcomic with a story you don't actually think is that great? I have a concept that has some "don't think about it too hard" moments in it that I haven't been able to figure out, but I still want to start a webcomic to see if I can keep up the schedule, improve my art and storytelling, etc.

I don't know, I see a lot of webcomics that I like or think look good but have a shit story or characters that really grab me. People still read them, though, and it helps them build an audience and get more experience as a creator.

That's what I did. I'm using it mostly for experience, so when I write my great stories, I have some experience.

I think you could get away with that p'raps, but give it a try. it's also okay if the background sort of fades into sketches and finally into void the further you get from the action, lots of nice comics do that. also when it comes to piles of bugs, it's best to think more "dirt" than "pebbles"
>>
>>78113586
I was considering the fading into a sketch thing but considering he is standing next to the seats and other people are there it may ruin the effect. I'll give it a try anyways. It's hard to explain without writing paragraphs, but all your panels are similarly sized relative to the page size, making them all seem small and the action randomly paced.

Personally I'd have stopped the page at "TO WHEREVER IS NEARBY!" and then started a new page with a strong establishing shot of the island, with the two panels next to it moved and shrank.

I can't explain the concept that greatly, but the size of a panel is reflective of the time passing in those panels. Large panels not only serve to help ground characters in a scene, but can represent moments frozen in time or long passages of time. Similarly small panels typically represent more actions taken in shorter amounts of time.

I can't explain much better than that, but I'll leave you with some selections from Scott McCloud's "Making Comics". It's an amazing book on comic theory and it's pretty much my bible, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Not what I was looking for, but from his first book on comic theory "Understanding Comics"
Scott is just a fun guy, and a webcomic innovator.
Have any of you ever heard of the "infinite canvas" style? It was popular in the early 2000s, but I don't see it much anymore.

I had a big well-thought-out reply for this but I hit some button I don't know what it was and 4chan decided to jump to the main /co/ page and I lost it all
suffice it to say yeah I totally get that, and ima work on timing, but in general i feel much more restricted by how small i'm drawing, how much I need to cram in, how boring i don't want panels to be, how many people need to feature, and the 1500-pound holstein of rigid conformity that newspaper-comic influence holds on me despite there being no good reason to like it so much. I feel like the comic got a lot better when I stopped experimenting with weird crazy panels like I used to and got back to the basic nice big square with plenty of space in it to explore and fill in creative ways.

oh and if i ended the page there, there'd be no joke. it had to be followed by 'oh but we can't go'

indeed. he's dead right.. at least about most of it. I think most of this only applies to 'cartoons' which is why I tend to hold cartoon-art-in-general with a bit of disdain and only like individual instances of it. I still believe there is such a thing as talent, but it's like instinct.. pretty inflexible, only useful for one thing. it can't grow or learn. imagination is a more valuable tool in the end.
>>
>>78113196
A great way to make that last panel work is to really WORK it.

Make it as wide as the three other panels, and show all of those other subway passengers having a funny reaction to the trail of spiders. That gives the readers plenty to look at and it flexes your cartooning muscles.

It's irksome because he clearly likes drawing the characters and his stuff has an odd charm to it, but he completely disregards all the advice and criticism he's given and keeps churning out the same stuff over and over.

He doesn't care about spellchecking his dialogue, he doesn't care about his linework. People suggested him techniques to make his stuff look better, he never even tried. People told him to use different free programs, he still uses MSP. He doesn't buy himself a cheapo Chinese tablet and draws with a mouse which will likely give him carpal tunnel.

It's like he doesn't give a single fuck about what he's doing but he still posts religiously in every HYW thread, way more than people who actually work on their comics.

>>
>>78118081
The only one I can think of is Yu+Me but I'm sure there are more.
>>
>>78118132
I was just curious because I'm writing a webcomic and I'm contemplating two or three endings.

One possibility is a "it was all a dream" ending.
>>
>>78118155

>One possibility is a "it was all a dream" ending.

I hope you're not serious.
>>
>>78118237
Well, it wouldn't technically be a dream. Just a twist that reveals the event didn't actually take place. There'd also be a reason behind it.

But, I don't want to say anymore because I post my webcomic here sometimes and I don't want to give away a possible ending.
>>
>>78118065

Yes if anything it'll be a good habit to have. It's the crutch of a good webcomic.
>>
>>78118265

Only if it's foreshadowed and makes sense. Otherwise it's an asspull and will piss people off.
>>
>>78118081
>>78118237
'it was all a dream' is only passable when the events in the dream result in satisfying consequences outside the dream.
Waking up from a coma, or coming to terms with dying isn't satisfying.

The dreams taking place in a very real dreamlands also makes it go down better. By which I mean there's a supernatural realm that anyone can reach by dreaming
>>
>>78115966
I kinda disagree mainly because I don't think I CAN pull it off. I'll try to draw the whole thing but I can almost guarantee it'll look like garbage because that flat on angle is almost impossible to make look good even for the best of professionals
>>
>>78118318
The way the story is being told, it's constantly foreshadowed unintentionally. Just little things that happen could be interpreted as foreshadowing. But only if the story actually does have a dream ending. It makes sense for the setting and story.

>>78118327
>Waking up from a coma, or coming to terms with dying isn't satisfying.
It wouldn't be anything like that.
>>
>>78118395

Wellllllllll I'd be careful. Stuff like that is always hard to pull off well. If you do go down that path you should make the hints more obvious and intentional, as if the barrier of what is perceived as real is crumbling down. Or you could make it ambiguous.
>>
As someone who works for Disney in animation... You guys lack fun. You're trying too hard.
>>
>>78118747

>>
>>78118797

>>

I had an idea where someone was stranded on an island with villagers and one of them was a mindreader that would send the MC on a quest to discover their true self.

The island is called Amoca. I thought the name was too obvious of a clue before the reveal.
>>
So, I don't know if anyone remembers the spirit journey story I posted here a while back.

But, I think I'm going to change the brown protagonist girl to an Asian girl. The spirits and monsters in the story are more based on eastern mythology anyways.

I think it'd be more fitting.

I can understand Futa at least. Look, sexytimes parts on a woman! But feet? Is it just a humiliation fetish with some cultural context? And diapers? There's no recovery from diapers.
>>
>>78095486
Just finish the story. By the time you're done, you will have new ideas and new projects where you can apply everything you've learned. Don't waste all your creative energy on one comic. You're improving fast and I see lot of potential in whatever your next comic Will be.

>>
>>78120045
Give it a few pages. Issue 2 will also give you what you crave.
>>
>>78111770

In some ways making a comic you don't think is great might be better for you to start with because you have less incentive to get trapped in a development phase making it "perfect".

Just the experience of making a comic will probably give you tons of ideas on how to make it better your next time around. I'd just recommend writing it in such a way where you could end it as a short story, or continue with it if you wanted to at that point.
>>
>>78111770
Trust me, you've already spent more time thinking about your comic than 90% of your readers ever will. Which is a good thing, the creator should always put more effort into creating the comic than the readers do reading it, but there are some thing that you can leave unexplained and it won't cause any problems.

Then again, what those things are depends on many factors. Without knowing exactly what those "don't think about it too hard" moments are, I can't say anything for certain.

you can always present the inexplicable stuff as an actual mystery the characters want to figure out, and tie it into other plot points later.

People are willing to put up with a lot of 'the wizard did it' when the apocryphal wizard is an actual person operating behind the scenes.

Just don't use it as a means to absolve characters of responsibility for what they did. You only get to play the 'was replaced by a Skrull' card once, and 'was bribed/had a loved one held hostage' is much more palatable than mind control.
>>
>>78119678

I think both of our comics would perhaps have benefited more from advertising if our comics had bigger archives. I'll do some more intensive advertising maybe late next year when there's a substantial archive of comics for people to read through and get more invested in the story.

Then again, given the content of your comics, that might not be as big of a problem for you.
