>>78034594
All three, but evil dragons are a little bit more over done and therefore boring if not handled really well.
Overly good dragons have the problem of being made too cute or blobby looking, especially if its aimed at children.

Overall it kind of falls in line with any character: just make the character interesting and designed well for christs sake.
>>
>>78034821
don't know about overdone, but I agree with everything else you say
>>

I prefer my dragons well defined, and not "perfect misunderstood creatures that are perfect".
>>
>>78034594
Depends on the world they're in, but I like dragons that just seem beyond humanity in some way.
More important than humans, and they know it, so what we see as evil might just be casual disregard.

If dragons are based on animals, it works best if they have arrogant or regal traits, like cats or birds of prey. Toothless is an excellent subversion of this, as a playful cat
>>
I only appreciate dragons as physical expressions of some transcendent force in the world, like greed or some other evil to be overcome.

In Greek myths like the story of Cadmus, the dragon that is slain represents the untamed, wild nature of the land the founding hero was conquering.

>Depends on the world they're in, but I like dragons that just seem beyond humanity in some way.
>More important than humans, and they know it, so what we see as evil might just be casual disregard.

this is why world of warcraft based comics and books ( the one around the red dragons and deathwing at least ) are awsome

Let's face it there's no real reason for a Dragon to see us as an equal.
>>
>>78035807
You mean besides divine demi God heroes slaying them and building kingdoms in their conquered lands?
>>

I thought dragons were usually neutral in greek myths, didn't apollo use them to power his chariot (Im don't know too much about greek myth.)
>>

Ants can kill a human, does that mean we're equals?
>>
>>78034594
It depends on the dragon. Obviously.
>>
>>78036034
If there was a single heroic ant who was the son of the ant God and slayed a human who was assaulting his ant hill by himself, then established a glorious ant kingdom, yes they would be equal.

Dragons are primordial forces of ancient evil from a time long past. Human demi Gods slay them as a symbolic gesture of the burgeoning human era
>>
>>78036248
how does that make them evil, are we evil for killing ant? also they don't exsit and everybody has different interpretations wheter it be good or bad, so why do people get so pissed? did a dragon step on your dog?

Good dragons are silly unless they are gods or spirits or such and not physically giant lizard monsters. Rampaging evil dragons are a bit cliche.

Neutral dragons are probably best. Giant monsters that you can reason with but are still giant monsters.

Check out Flight of the Dragons.
It's an old animated film.
Not EXACTLY what you're looking for but it's reasonably in the ballpark.
>>
The old movie Dragonslayer is still my favorite dragon movie and how I think dragons should be portrayed but that might be cause it's one of the first movies I ever remember watching and the first one with a dragon in it.
>>
Dragons are best when they aren't written as evil humans who can breathe fire. They should have motivations that don't make sense to people because they aren't people.
>>
>>78041256
Easier to just write them as evil, it's the same thing to most since that's unrelatable.
>>
>>78039227
I'm so sick of all powerful, ancient dragons who are basically gods. Bonus points if they go on rants about how much better they are and have a 'pathetic human' line.

It's just been done to death. I prefer my dragons more beastly. I don't care if they're evil or not.
>>
All three
>>
>>78043016
That shit's always retarded. If the dragons really were as great as they claim to be in those storieas, then humans and most other lesser beings would never have been able to develop, and would be no more than what apes and other animals are to us.

I just think of Skyrim and I thought the dragons were incredibly boring. They were just assholes who enslaved people because they were assholes. Nothing about them was particularly interesting or 'unique'. It was just the same rehashed shit.

Reign of Fire had an interesting but simple take on them. I don't remember the movie as much as I do the game but their dragons worked more like bees or something, I think. There was just one huge male, the females didn't live long after breeding, they'd cannibalize each other, etc.
They were just beasts and in the game you could play as a dragon, but you played as one of the females instead of the big boss male and have to help protect him. You weren't overpowered, no magic, no ancient knowledge, you just flew around picking people up to drop them to death and napalm the fuck out of their crops.
>>
I liked how Dragon's Dogma handled it.
>>
>>78044032

For what though? They portrayed them as needing nothing. They don't even NEED to eat. They didn't need houses or cities, they don't breed, they were just happy sitting on top of mountains doing nothing, they didn't need to make sure the economy was all in order, they didn't give a fuck because they were so 'above'. They had absolutely nothing to gain by doing it aside from being a constant reminder to everyone that they were so much more superior.

I tend to love evil dragons, but also ones that are more neutral. To me Dragons represent the absolute greatest physical manifestation of primal desires like greed and pride.
I really did love Cumberbatch's Smaug in the Hobbit movies, probably best part in the trilogy, but really should have used this design instead of the lazy but "realistic" wyvern style every movie dragon has been using since Dragonslayer with a few notable exceptions.

Gosh, nice to hear what people like and dislike. Personally, I like any dragon that isn't badly-made or just all-out evil. Maybe that's just the six year-old in me.

I'm writing a setting with all kinds of dragons. Most of them are wild animals, but they're all immortal and there is a minority of them gifted with speech and shape-shifting. Some of them work as super-mercenaries who are paid in gold bars. Others, having tired of wanton destruction and battle, now exist as never-dying politicians, investment bankers or philanthropists who give to charity when not spending their money on Ferraris and marble statues for their castle home.

Be honest, sound interesting or dumb?

>>
>>78034594
It depends on the setting, all three can be done well but I overwhelmingly prefer neutral animals.
I was introduced to the idea of intelligent dragons quite late on and I always found it dumb. They're great big, terrifying beasts, it just seems silly to me that they should be capable of speech. Dragons hoarding/desiring gold also seemed equally dumb, why should they give a shit about it?
I like the way Game of Thrones handles them, incredibly rare and virtually untameable animals which are the equivalent of bringing Harrier Jump Jets to medieval warfare.

I personally like this: Dragons are not gods, but apex lifeforms. They can be good, evil, or neutral, but usually look out for their own interests, as all immortals tend to do. When a dragon appears, it changes the game. They don't necessary care about mortals, but some may find them interesting enough to interact with the little things.

Granted, any type of portrayal can work if it's done well, but that's the flavor I most prefer.

They sound like they would be too common and they would lose their novelty fast. If they were just wild animals that weren't over powered and had a natural niche, then that's fine but it gets weird when you add in intelligent and employed ones.
However, I am very fond of the idea of a dragon being in charge of a bank behind a desk, or it being common for rich people to keep a small dragon in their treasury as a sort of guard dog.
