Hand lettering done well is miles better than digital. There's something about having perfectly identical letters that just doesn't work, even when people make custom fonts from their handwriting. It's great to see someone pull it off in a webcomic.

You'd be better off without those two first speech bubbles in that last panel. The joke is already there and doesn't need dialogue to aid it. "Send help" should stay.
>>
>>78025428
>>78025862

And maybe in the third panel the eyeball shouldn't be seen and maybe have her mouth hidden behind her hands so the reveal is even more sudden.

I can digitally remove the speech bubbles but I cant do much else...unless I totally redo panel 3.

Yeah, sorry I didn't see it before but I'm just offering my two cents. I think just removing the speech bubbles are fine enough.
>>
Does anyone have any tips for keeping proportions consistent?

Obviously, there's the "head" method, but that falls apart if you're trying to do dynamic poses.

Most artists seem to be able to eyeball it but whenever I try I'm terribly inconsistent without measure everything.

I'll make a separate panel 3 on another paper and see how it goes.
>>
>>78025951

It's easy on the computer if you're using photoshop or any other art program with layers. When I do a picture I do a presketch of all characters and make sure they at least have the same proportions. Anything from previous pages I copy the presketch layer from those and bring them over.

It also helps that you can resize layers so if you want to check proportions with another figure that's a different size you can resize your other sketch.
>>
>>78025951

Head method is best, after you master that, eyeballing it is easy.
>>
>>78025951
I do head, ribcage and hips first for any given pose. Limbs based off of that once I've got them in place. e.g. elbows would reach the base of the ribcage, hands to the crotch.

Then again I'm not very good.

Well the end of this year will be the end of a lot of things. I'm dropping one of my comics and will likely stop doing Fanart Friday. The good news is that the other comic will be updating twice a week sometime in January.

This way I can focus more on one comic like I initially wanted. Still, it's sad to cut stuff. But I can't handle the stress and disappointment.

This also means I deal with one artist.

As an alternative opinion, I think it's fine the way it is, as being a 4 panel gag it runs Set up - Development - Punchline - Escalation.
Moving the Punchline to panel 4 would mean having an extra, superfluous, Development panel.

this being this late is pretty sad, considering how much recycled material it has.. but if we'd had a thread last night at least i could have posted it then

at least this relieves my worry that some people unfamiliar with old stuff would be unsatisfied with the timetravel mission not showing its results.. thought of some bits to put in to show what it accomplished..
and then just to balance it out, some shit that's meaningless EXCEPT to people familiar with the old stuff.

the pirate cap'n was originally going to be saying that to the crab, but he turned out facing the camera. i think that's even funnier. though in retrospect this guy in a top hat and pointy shoes that I designed 13 years ago doesnt remotely look like a pirate, aside from the steering wheel.

so yeah this all came together better than I planned

It's not like its specific to him. Buckley is bad for many reasons not just his poor joke delivery.

Yeah, it's something a lot of gag comic writers do but Buckley is infamous for it to the point where people edit his comics to improve the joke delivery.

Of course that's all second to something he's infamous for.
>>
>>78027139
Yeah it's a really bad habit he has that shows a bad understanding of humor
But that doesn't mean nobody should EVER do a 4-paneler with the punchline in the 3rd and escalation in the 4th. If you don't do it constantly, it's a fun surprise
and in this case she's so PROUD of her mouth that that adds a secondary joke

There are alternatives. Different ways to tell a joke. Maybe even have a secondary gag in case the first one isn't enough.

I know some people don't like funny reactions in the last panel but if pulled off well they can work.

I dunno what's happening with me lately, I don't feel like working on my webcomic, and when I force myself to, I look ath the paper and sigh, getting nothing done.
I ended up doing another fanart on the go, that It will need some fixing because I didn't have a ruler and that throne is messed up.
I'll try to get something done once I get home from work.
>>
>>78027485
>secondary gag

But isn't the trapped guy saying "Send help" the secondary gag (escalation)?

If the 4th panel was just
> "Is that an eyeball?"
> "Yeah"
then that wouldn't really work as it doesn't bring anything new to what's shown in the previous panel.
But as it is, we see Chekov's eyeball in panel 3, and then Chekov himself, unexpectedly, trapped in the throat in panel 4.

>>78027620
I don't think panel 3 adds anything to the strip in this case; it doesn't develop it any further.
Panels 1, 2 and 4 together would be fine if it was a 3 panel gag, but for 4 panels you need either additional set up, or a secondary escalation of the punchline.
>>
>>78028032

What exactly do you not like? Writer's block? Laying out the page? Lacking interest in the comic as a whole?
>>
>>78028032
we all get blahs. If it helps, this looks great. Your art has been looking better every time I see it lately
>>78028081
I think the current plan by the artist is for the 4th panel to just have 'help me' and nowt else
>>
>>78028129
I'm going to do another page and look at it later because too many conflicting ideas here.
>>
>>78028101
I dunno, I know how thew story goes, so I'm not put of ideas. I'm confident in my composition to know how to lay out the upcoming pages.
I think I lack excitement. Some times I'm really hype about doing some scenes that in my head are good, and when I do them, I don't stop until it's over, but this time, while I like what I'm doing, I don't feel pumped to get it done.

Wish I could explain exactly what's going on my head, but I'm not sure I understand it either.
>>
>>78027485
I'm not an expert, take this as a reader opinion, I think the fourth panel would work better if she was standing alone with a blank stare, like the guy pretty much evaporated due to fear.
>>
>>78028081
>But isn't the trapped guy saying "Send help" the secondary gag (escalation)?

It can be or supplement the first gag. It really depends on the overall comic.

>I don't think panel 3 adds anything to the strip in this case; it doesn't develop it any further.
>Panels 1, 2 and 4 together would be fine if it was a 3 panel gag, but for 4 panels you need either additional set up, or a secondary escalation of the punchline.

That comic would be her appearing to be normal to the guy as she reacts to the compliment then going to extremely unsettling when she opens her mouth in the fourth panel.

The end to PPG's Moral Decay comes to mind.

>>78028162

Do whatever you feel is better. It's your comic. Not ours.
>>
>>78028229
I'm the original artist and I didnt make that version of the comic. I did thumbnail something very similar and one just like what you stated. There were about 10 different versions of this comic I had tested and rejected. The version I posted is what I liked best.
>>
>>78028275

Then go with it and don't change anything. Do your thing.
>>
>>78028275
Your original was the best one so far, you should trust your own opinion more.
>>
>>78028275
It's funny how people have their own preconceptions about what an artist has already considered when they give advice. Necessarily, since they aren't psychic. Yet I find most of the time if I try to explain that I've already thought of something and decided against it, they call it excuses or deflecting.
>>
>>78028275
Oh, I see. Well, I do agree with the notion that the third and fourth panels kinda drag the joke, but instead of changing the last one, I think the third could have a little smile that doesn't reveal yet the horror.

I looked at the one with the tentacles and the one with the bangs on her head, and those work perfectly, and I think part of the reason is keeping the reveal to the very last panel.

BTW, do you host this somewhere?
>>
>>78028324

In the end it doesn't matter. The best thing is to at least listen and use your personal judgment.

Im going to make seperate versions of the last 2 panels and then think on it for a bit. I don't have anything hosted yet and to be honest these strips are so I can sell small books at cons. The webcomic I planned is something different entirely. I seem to recall you drew one of the characters in a thread. If you have a tumblr, mine is indifferetsocks.
>>
>>78028461
OH! I made a drawing for you some time ago, and you did one for me too, I remember you!
>>
>>78028324
I wasn't trying to make excuses if that's what your implying. I did mention I'm going to give one of the ideas a try. Ist just that I never ever make one go at anything. It's why I never produced much work. I am very picky but at the same time my head always seems to want things to go in one exact direction and one only. This was my attempt to vary it up a bit. I tried many options and I made many thumbnails. Some had up to 6 panels. I have a problem where I over thing things though and so I told myself to shut up and keep it simple with a mild variation.
>>
>>78028515

nothing really, i get stuck doodling aimlessly or feeling like i need to study, so i end up drawing boxes or a face or an ellipse. I don't really have a direction.

also i don't really have much to say, no real life experiences outside of school and my job.

And I really hate using photoshop, but I have to use it to make things.

That's okay, that stage is useful. Just stick with it, draw stuff you feel like drawing. Let the comic wait until you have stories. They will appear, you'll get inspired. You'll be watching something or read a summary of an episode of something or half-hear the plot of something and your brain will be like 'hey what if such and such' and that's how it'll go. Til then, just draw stuff.

He is asking for advice. And I'm giving some that he probably hasn't gotten the last time he posted that page.

At least a comic title and website. It's also something I have noticed other webcomics in this thread have done, posting their work and having a website and are looking for new readers. And then someone asks for comic name and links.

It's something that all webcomics need to have.

For example, pic related. This comic has everything. Title, author name, address. Imagine someone saves this image and posts it somewhere else. Somebody might be interested and want to check it out. Well all the info is right there. Bam, new reader.

This isn't aimed at just that anon but any webcomic that wants to maximize potential readers. On every page there should be at least be a title and an address.

I'm no artist, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I think you could benefit from using less bright colors. Darker shades or muting the colors might look better. The bend of the soldier's arm in the second panel also looks off. It shouldn't be that straight.
>>
>>78031565
i've always been fond of the 90s classic 'cannon of some kind mounted in forearm on rising platform'
you can also have the wrist unit detach and propel itself with a trailing cable wound in by a winch further into the arm, so the hand can be a grappling hook or a GET OVER HERE
bullets from fingertips is tricky to justify because how the hell are they being fed in through the joints and motors and all that, but electrifying itself is perfect (just make sure it shields the user at the shoulder attachment point)
umm concealed buzzsaw elbow.. biosensors so you can tell just where to jab somebody with a touch.. poison coated spikes.. the sky's the limit. just don't cram it all in at once or it's like how the fuck does it fit

Sorry to miss the last update here, usually like chit-chatting with folks about stuff. We're doing a slight break from Beatrice on the warpath to confront the issue's title. Conrad finds his balls and opts to get confrontational with his backers in New Mexico.

Might make a cast page too. Got the time for it now. Any major stuff go down?

somehow I never thought he had backers.. or standards. it'll be interesting getting to know the REAL him a bit
and yeah this is a great time for a cast page, the cast has gotten big enough that it's hard to just quickly skim a few early comics to get everyone's name, and the art style has solidified nicely. (and with a comic this set in reality, you've got too many mundane names to remember easily. at least to me, names like that blend together like memories of kids at school)

I've also got a secondary blog with meta stuff. Q&A, lore for the space opera setting, if you care about that kind of stuff, some one-off art. The character Q&A stuff is sometimes meant to have little easter eggs for the attentive reader. Hazel's childhood day dream discussion, for example. That's here:

>Backers/Standards
Yeah, they've been sort of throwaway comments. Conrad's got people giving him orders to some degree; he isn't happy about it but they're present. Possibly in New Mexico. But he's a lacking-in-confidence shitzipper without a spine when it comes to verbal confrontations with them; and it'll be fun to explore that too.

As for standards, Conrad has said he doesn't want to/like to kill dogs. Lot easier to hurt people than animals, at least from my personal vantage point. I know way shittier people than dogs.

>Cast Page
Yeah, that's the real problem with doing stuff in reality. Names. I realize now that having Delk being misnamed by Walt as Dirk further compounds problems. Though he does have the most uncommon name of the crew.

Thanks for the art comment. We're in a good place now. How's your stuff going?

>Hand lettering done well is miles better than digital. There's something about having perfectly identical letters that just doesn't work
I disagree, I don't particularly enjoy having to read text that's handwritten and prefer comic with well executed font lettering. So it's more a matter of taste than an absolute "one is better than the other".

I can appreciate the work that goes into hand-lettering, especially in traditional media where fixing spacing errors is much harder, but just because something takes more work to do doesn't mean it's inherently better.

>>
>>78044336
not so much critique as tweak. shorter neck, shorter upper torso, shorter lower torso, shorter arms, then just straight up scale up the lower body. As for the facial proportions they seem pretty inconsistent, leading to some looks working and others not
on the other hand holy crap look at the consistent angles on those difficult shoes, pouches, ransel.. cuffs.. hands.. i've never seen anyone be so good at those and still have proportions worse than twilight princess. I'm really not trying to insult you it's just so weird to see that. I've been trying forever to get as good as you at those accessories.

Main protagonist girl is forced to become not-useless in order to save the ones she loves, because prophecy.

She's a light mage, the only one of her kind. As such, she's the only one who can fight the shadow magi, who have been getting more and more powerful for years, and now threaten to become a serious problem to the world at large. Problem is that she's horribly inept with her gift.

So the story is about her slowly getting better at using her gift, but also learning of the horrors and responsibility that possessing such a gift comes with.

She carries an enchanted pistol, which lets you wipe away memories with a shot to the head. It's got seven bullets. She holds it to her head every night, debating whether or not to erase the whole mess from her mind.

Well, think about the difference between Naruto in the beginning and now.

In the beginning, it was a very personal fight with Zabuza, where every kunai and shuriken actually meant something.

Now, if someone doesn't have a jutsu that destroys small moons, they're dogmeat.

It's because in the beginning, they were fighting for their friends, not to save the world.

I give them all the details I want initially, sketch up a layout of the page, and await a sketch from them. If I have any changes I want, I let them know. Then I get the finished result.

Sometimes even at the very end there's something that needs to be changed and I either tell the artist to fix it or I do it myself. That's why I ask for the files for the images.

It also depends on how much freedom you want to give the artist and how much you trust them to come up with something to make your page even better. If you're kind of an artist you may want more control. If not, it's best to find an artist that is good on their own and give them just the details you specifically want.

A good idea is to get the artist as invested in the project as possible. Give them respect and compliment them. Ask them for their opinions. If they care it'll show in their work and you want that.

The electric situaton is complicated. Before we moved in, we had everything in the place redone but the electrician reccomend by the building was horrible. Not only did he reuse old items from other jobs, he wired everything so weirdly which caused the lighs to flicker and some of the switch plates to get extremely hot as well as having several outlits flat out not work. The electric has been out because the repairs have been so extensive and the more the new electricians do, the more problems they find. We will be suing the old guy for sure.

Anyhow, yeah mimi is pretty naive. In another comic I'll be drawing soon, she gives one of her extra eyes to a stray cat that is missing one. She also screws with cameras.

I have a pretty involved process with my artist which I'm sure annoys him a lot of the time. First I write a script, then I send it to him, and he draws it page by page. Each page he sends me a very rough sketched layout which I look over. Usually I approve the layout without any changes because he has a very good sense for what looks good on a comic page. Then he starts on the inks, once those are done I look them over to see if anything needs to be changed before the page progresses, then he does flat colors and I look them over, then shaded colors, and after that we start working on dialogue, sound effects, narration, etc. This is the step where I end up rewriting something on almost every page, including changing multiple pages at once to better fit what he's drawn. The comic comes out stronger for it though, and the end result is always better than what was in the script. When issue 1 is finished, I'm gonna post the script here for anyone who's interested, so they can compare it to the finished comic and see just how much was changed (hint: it's a lot). I like the intensive, one-on-one interaction with my artist that the webcomic medium gives me. If this were a proper studio comic, I wouldn't get to oversee the production like this and the quality of the comics would suffer, both from an artistic and from a writing perspective.

>Is pacing something you can only get by practice or are there any basic guidelines for it?
It's a combination of practice and study, just like anything related to comics is, really. Always be working on stuff, and also always be reading stuff created by other people, but with the eye of a writer rather than a fan. See what they do, how they do it, why they do it, what works and what doesn't, and learn from that, while at the same time working on your own stuff yourself.

>how to work with an artist
-get the artist involved emotionally, let him/her edit the script
-prepare your feedback, don't give vague criticism
-understand that every change and improvement means more work for the artist. Know when to just accept the illustrations as they are.
-some people write together, then the artist moves on to draw the pages, some people just work separately. Working together is more fun and much more difficult and demanding at the same time.
>pacing
yes you can study it, there are articles about this. Both visually and script-wise. Of course, testing and comparing is how you learn it best.
the basics: learn story structure, scene structure and joke structure first. Learn editing techniques from movies.

Working with a pair requires a lot of conversation about how to improve your working habits. I've seen what happens if you don't any times.

What's the point of making a webcomic?
the web is already too crowded, and there's a pretty high chance you're not going to make any money out of it, just a pathetic exercise in mental masturbation, that will first inflate your once reasonable expectations, and then drop them and let them rot poisoning your ego forever.
I wish someone was able to prove me wrong.

I just don't think this comic is compatible with gettin' issuey. not that it's EVER a good thing really, but it's one thing to just shrug something off because oh well, it's a webcomic, whatever
it's another entirely when i find myself sandwiching several different layers of agreeing and disagreeing with the same character in the same panel. Thus far this has been a VERY escapist comic, utterly silly, no connection to reality, even the reality of a super rich person.
but fuckit if you wanna do it go ahead, it's your comic. express yourself. I'm just saying the particular COMBINATION of issues going right now are guaranteed to piss off someone. You've got a kind of anarcho-libertarian demanding one thing be restricted and another freed up and worrying about soccer moms while bribing cops.. worrying about the perversion of a game she admits she made just as a cash grab..
Maybe if it was more from the perspective of 'this will lose money and that's what i care about' then it would work. And in the second of these last three strips, I thought maybe that's where it was going. But now she's tossing out 'sex-negative' and getting mad about game reviews.. while talking about raping people and.. i just don't even. I wanna go back to not taking it seriously at all.

How the fuck do you color?? S-slap a gradient on it... call it a day...
>>
>>78069420
Well... for now, yeah.

I started drawing three-ish years ago. Literally the first time I put pencil to paper seriously. For about 4 months I drew 6-14 hours a day, got kicked out of my house, lived homeless for a while drawing, moved in with a friend, drew there until he lied about what was going on and we got evicted, ended up homeless again, kept drawing.

Then I got tired of being homeless and started working, so for about a year I didn't draw nearly as much as I used to. I started drawing because I wanted to be able to tell stories beyond just writing them. I felt like it was easier to make a story stand out with art than it was with writing, so I learned to draw.

Now I'm back to being homeless, and back to drawing.

tldr; Haven't been drawing lately, so there's nothing updated or recent. I'll be changing that.

Actually, I think I'm going to vent. These past few months have been shitty and as much as I normally hate it, I'm going to bitch and whine on a public forum because anonymity. This'll be one of the few times I give in to my inner autist.

I was one of the only people in my family to graduate from high school, and was going to be one of the first to go to college. Up until my senior year, I was determined to go into biomechatronics or something similar, and studied medicine, digital electronics, and engineering. My family couldn't have been any happier that they could all rest their hopes and debts on their only son.

So when I told them that I wanted to learn to draw, and that I wanted to tell stories, they were of course devastated. Soon after, all of my normal habits suddenly became a much more noticeable burden to them and I was kicked out. I took my laptop and a crash bag with stuff to keep me clean. I drew non-stop, and not too far in the future my dad asked if I wanted to live with him. I accepted the offer, and spent my time drawing while he doted over his only son that he never got to see. He seemed pretty happy with the situation.

Then he got drunk and told me I was a worthless hack, and that everyone on his side of the family was incredibly disappointed that I'd throw away such a bright future for something I know I'll never accomplish. I'll never become an artist, and I'm just wasting my time and life. I could have been so much more, done such great things, etc.

We got into a fight, and I ended up leaving. I lived homeless for a few months until I remembered a friend from high school offered to let me stay with him while his dad tried a new relationship. They had just won a lawsuit due to malpractice, so apparently money wasn't an issue. I agreed, and lived in what I found out was a building with no working shower or toilet, piles of garbage outside the house, and dishes so old that I vomited the moment I tried to wash them.
>>
>>78070410
The internet was cut several times, along with the electricity and gas. He had a dog that he never took outside, so it repeatedly shit and pissed all over everything. There were cans stacked to his ceiling against his bedroom wall, and bags of garbage in his room. Dog shit was literally every square foot of the house but my room and the door in my room that lead outside. I never went anywhere else in the house because of it.

But after all was said and done, I never complained. I tried to clean what I could, and just accepted that this was the cost of living somewhere for free while I studied. I drew 14 hours a day, seven days a week for six months straight. I drew so much that when I closed my eyes I could see lines being drawn in white space. I would go days without remembering to eat.

Eventually, we were evicted. Turns out he neglected to mention that no one was paying any property taxes for the past two years he and his father lived there. He received a month's notice, and informed me when there was only one week left.

After that, I went back to living in my car. I tried working at a plastic factory nearby, but ended up burning my hand so bad on an open furnace that I couldn't draw. I decided that if I was going to risk my hand working there then it wasn't an option, and quit shortly after. I applied at several other places and found work at a satellite ISP. I was a NOC technician in title, but in reality I was a manager, janitor, security guard, tech support, network technician, and engineer. I was paid $12/hr, and worked a night shift. The work was so constant and busy, and everyone was so high strung and angry that I ended up not drawing for a very long time. After a year of working there, just this June I was fired without warning because of a storm that knocked out the system during my shift. There was literally nothing that could have been done to prevent it. Satellites and antennas don't work well with rain and lightning.
>>
>>78070410
>>78070539
Damn son.

Now I really want to see your art.
>>
>>78070539
This happened immediately after my vacation, where I spoiled myself and several friends and gave myself $2600 in credit card debt. Obviously my fault, but knowing I was going to be fired would have helped me plan things a little better. To top it off, my car started on fire two weeks later.

I'm now homeless, couch surfing when possible. I sleep during the day because it's less likely that someone will grab my stuff if I'm awake at night. I have a backpack full of drawing supplies, a laptop, a drawing tablet, and a phone with no service. I use public wifi connections where I can find them, and eat nothing but peanut butter sandwiches and ramen.

All this because I told my family I wanted to learn to draw.

It's been a hell of a fucking ride.

Sorry for shit posting, but god damn I needed that.

It was done side by side with a photo reference. It took 24 hours total, over three or four days. Shame is that it doesn't actually look like the source at all, so it's a failure in that regard. But I do think it's the best I've done with coloring and lighting.

Debating if I should do a webcomic or a novel and have someone else draw pictures for me. I wanted to do a superhero thing but due to Boku no Hero I'm afraid that people are going to complain that it's not original.
>>
Dude, DEFINITELY keep drawing. You've got a lot of talent and clearly a lot of drive. You just gotta find a way to turn that into cash.
>>
>>78070784
That's definitely something you can do, but it probably isn't going to be cheap.
>>
>>78070786
Right now I'm in this dilemma where nothing I draw is "good enough". I draw something, and before I even get halfway through the drawing I restart because it "should be better."

I can't even get myself to start on my comic because "I'm not good enough to convey the ideas properly." I tell myself over and over that I'll just study this one thing a little more and then I can do it. I get so frustrated with my lack of improvement and my slacking over that year I worked that I end up just sitting and staring at a blank photoshop canvas until my eyes burn. I have no idea how to get around it, so I'm just kind of flailing around hoping I'll get something to stick soon.

This is just my personal opinion:

- leave the explosion panel as is, it looks fantastic
- 3 different colored suits may be a bit much. I'd go with the brown ones as a nice contrast to the blue helmets and weapons
- make the vault door silver / metalic, or if you want to leave it as is you should change the color of the room in panel 1

That's about it. Again, that explosion looks really nice, good job.

Thanks for the feedback. Artist buddy did great on the explosion, really went above and beyond on it.

The vault door being the same colour was my call, and you aren't the only one disliking it...I might change it up, but I'd like to wait until there's more shots of the location, just to get the big picture.
It's civic infrastructure, and that always means block pastel paint jobs in my mind.

Camo variety and absurd choices of colour and pattern is how I saw the SPOOK squads from the start, they're a weird pseudo-military that again maybe needs more context.

>>
>>78075845
It's a weak delivery. It's wordy and the whole impractical bit can be done without. You have a tendency to overplay the jokes. I don't know how to make comedy but you've got to cut off everything but the joke.

It should be something like

> "Hey there! Nice dress!"
> Aw, thanks! It's my favorite!
> ...and it's got **Cthulhu twist reveal** !

You could play this in 3 panels. There's a daily strip with this kind of dark humor, see

http://dakotamcfadzean.com/comic/the-dailies-2132/

The other one with the smile had the same issue, you could have played it in 3 panels with
> "Hey there! I want to see a smile!"
> Smiles with horrid shit in her mouth
> eyes appear in the back of her throat, tiny bubble says "help"
>>
>>78074902
Damn, you're so wrong that it burns. Cute and grimdark have been used for countless characters for a really, really long time.

>>78074373
The joke seems a little forced. The last panel in particular is a little strange. Would someone really respond, "Gee whiz, that seems impractical," in a situation like that? You don't really NEED to explain the clothing. Even if the character just finds the clothes cute, that's fine. It just has to make sense to them.
>>
>>78076051
4 panel was more than okay for the smile. I agree that this one could do with 3 panel, though.
>>
>>78075845
Also I forgot to tell you, you should make the guy more familiar with her. Maybe a boy who likes her, someone who's dating her. You can't have a total stranger walk up to her and go "hey there cutie!", it makes the thing unrelatable.
>>
>>78074902
Charles Addams, Edward Gorey, Silly Symphonies Skeleton Dance...

You're really talking out of your ass here.
>>
>>78076089
I disagree, that extra panel slowed it down way too much.

cute intro -> horror reveal -> punchline
>>
>>78074373
>>78075845
>Him: Excuse me but what's up with that outfit?

>Her: It's cute!
>[close up of her face as it looks serious, dark and evil]
>Her: And it hides the endless darkness harboring within me, filled with unspeakable horrors that are waiting for a chance to come out and consume human flesh and bring about the end of humanity...
>[immediately goes back to a cute and innocent smile]

>[he is unphased by what she just said and smiles]
>Him: That's actually pretty practical!

>Her: Thank you!

It'd be interesting if some people just seemed to be okay with her creepy side.

Holy shit I said "check out this comic, he uses the same dark humor and I think he nails it quite well"

Whatever. I apologize to the artist.
Artist anon, if you are offended, it wasn't my intention to upset you and I only meant to give feedback and suggestions.

Okay, I thought of a different idea based on the same thing. This is also based off a real convo someone had with me. Take that as you will

>mimi on train. Fellow passenger asks why she's dressed like that.
>she says because it's cute and a big dress hides big secrets
>he responds with how her dress says she's here but not here or that her clothes say that she's from a much more magical place (I'll have to tighten it up to explain what he means better)
>she says Thank you and skips away while the environment around her becomes rusty like the hospital in silent hill.

Does that work better?
>>
>>78076713
I'm not offended. Not even the person you are arguing with.
>>
>>78076713
The entire first post linked is you judging their format and comparing, for fuck's sake man. You even go so far as to say that you don't do comedy, "but this person does and I like them so you should look at that."

>>78076747
Like an "It has a magical feel to it" kind of thing? You'll have to be careful with how you execute the last panels, it'll completely determine the feel of the joke.
>>
>>78076927
Yes but the magical place she's from is less magical fairy forest and more decrepit hospital. I might just make it so that dead grass and flowers and stuff grow out of her footsteps or something.

Little more Peaceoneers design work, this time of one of the team's vehicles. Our vehicle designer guy is doing good work mixing Gerry Anderson vibes with more modern looking stuff, I really like this one.

>Webcomics question

Anyone any thoughts on doing a webcomic issue by issue instead of page by page?

I'd like to do more self-contained stories than endless on-going, and allow for anthologies rather than all just one amorphous thing.

Would it kill readership with the longer update waits and the loss of the 'soap opera' appeal? Is there a good middle ground?

Very sharp observation

>You even go so far as to say that you don't do comedy, "but this person does and I like them so you should look at that."
And what's wrong with that exactly? You realize that looking at examples of what you're trying to do is helpful?

Actually you know what? I'll make you happy. I apologize to you too, Anon. Hope that settles it. You win the argument, you're right. Congrats.

Let's say an artist improves a lot over the course of working on his webcomic. Maybe it's his first webcomic.

He gets better, the comic gets better, but he still never attracts a readership.

Could it be because the early, poorly-drawn pages are a detriment, and they turn off new readers?
>>
>>78077506
Depends on just how poorly they were drawn. If you don't really have a readership, it might be worth going back and redrawing them. You could see if that helps.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin is free hire, free fire. I can't do anything about it legally.

How I ended up homeless again? I don't have a cash flow anymore, and don't have a car. I can try working some shitty part time job and pretend I'll be able to save up enough to get myself a car, get myself somewhere to live, and get myself out of debt in a reasonable amount of time but that just isn't going to happen.

Instead, I'm going to focus on drawing like I should have in the first place and see where I can get. Maybe it's stupid, but I just don't care anymore.

Let's be fair, Tom Siddell's art wasn't "bad" compared to a lot of people's first attempts.

>>78077775
Lmfao do you have any idea how long it would take for me to work myself out of the hole I'm in? I don't even have a car anymore, so work I can get is severely limited. Working minimum wage, I can't afford to get a place to live for at least three months, and can't afford to get a car for three more, and that's if I completely ignore my credit card debt.

>>78077817
What actually happened was that I spent about $1400 in cash while out with my friends for a trip, and then spent another $1400 that I didn't have to basically rebuild my broken car a few weeks later. After that, I had to pay for a hotel to visit my grandmother on her deathbed last Christmas, which was another bit of cash I didn't have. I didn't think much of it at the time because towards the end of my time working there I was making decent money.

Then I was fired as a scapegoat without warning.

I went to a convention with my friends, paid for their hotel room, and brought them out for a $700 dinner. I never claimed what I did was smart, and I even said earlier that I'm not looking for pity. I just said I was venting.

But I get it, reading comprehension isn't your thing. I'm not gonna judge you for things you can't do, like understand English.

I had a lot of shitty things happen to me, and when things were looking up I decided I should treat myself and the people I care about. It backfired, but honestly I'd do the same thing again. The real issue was losing my job just because some oil rig doesn't understand that satellite internet doesn't like heavy rain.

There was a heavy storm where all networks went down for about a four hour period and then came back up, and apparently they were doing a data transfer at the time and it somehow got corrupted "because of us". I didn't even find out about this until the day I was fired, and even then it was only from a friend of mine at work.

The manager came in when my shift was homeless and told me he needed to talk. He pulled me into his office and said they were letting me go. I asked why and he said "Lack of motivation." I asked for examples. His example was that I didn't draw the company a mascot character. That was his reason. I was never paid to do this, and it was only mentioned in passing, yet that was why I was being fired.

I called up unemployment and discussed that with them. Their conclusion was, and I'm quoting, "While the termination of employment was unjust, it was legal" and qualified me. The problem was that shortly after my car broke down, so I couldn't job hunt properly.

>>78078305
Not sure yet. I'm going to the school tomorrow to talk to them about my options. I have a friend that attends that's willing to let me room with him for a while if I do go there.

>>78078364
They aren't uptight and practical. They're drug addicts with mental issues that couldn't finish high school.
>>
>>78078364
They wanted me to pay off their debts, like I somehow owed them for having them as my parents and family.

>>78078391
There's isn't a debtor's prison. I'll ignore it until I can manage it, which will happen sooner or later.

>>78078366
My parents? Pay for school? My mom doesn't work, and her husband doesn't make enough to pay for their house and 4 daughters, let alone pay for my college. You sound like the kind of scumbag that would fit right in with my family.
>>
>>78078461
>My parents? Pay for school?
That's what you said, bro.

>>78070410
>My family couldn't have been any happier that they could all rest their hopes and debts on their only son.
The way that was phrased sounds like they were going to put themselves into debt to pay for your education. Even if that's not the case, you're obviously planning to pay for your education with mostly student loan money, which is also a terrible idea and will put you in the same hole you've been in, ESPECIALLY if you're really going to college to "buy time" which is the worst possible reason to go to college.
>>

My attitude gets bad when people start acting like I'm somehow begging for their pity and mercy, and insinuating that I'm somehow taking advantage of someone else's kindness. It's denying everything I've done for myself up to this point, so of course it pisses me off.

>>78078582
Whatever you say, champ. Somehow I doubt you're qualified to feel confident about it.

>My attitude gets bad when people start acting like I'm somehow begging for their pity and mercy

That's pretty much what you're doing. Attention whoring and driving this thread completely off topic. Also you're probably lying about why you're getting fired and kicked out of everywhere.
>>
>>78078629
I have a lot of different ideas, but I'm trying to decide which one I want to tackle first. One is a fairly typical fantasy setting with a grand over-arcing quest, but the main character is actually being deceived for the entirety of the story to what the quest's true purpose actually is. I want it to deal with lots of moral gray areas and play with the idea of an unwitting anti-protagonist.

quests with twists are best quests. My only suggestion at that vague stage is don't make it TOO big a deception, like an entire big organization has constructed an entire fictional religion just to deceive this one guy. In the face of that, there's no real punch, ANYONE would have been deceived.
Hell you can play off your life experiences a bit. Have the hero make an honest mistake that leads to a bunch of bullshit in the form of a quest, and it turns out that mistake was all but engineered behind the scenes (like if someone killed bruce wayne's parents intentionally to make a batman)

>>
>>78079010
Exactly. He convinces this little hobbit that doesn't know any better that some guy that rules part of a kingdom to the north is some kind of evil monster, and tells him that he has to destroy the one thing keeping the guy alive. If we didn't know the history of the whole thing, we could just assume that they were two warring nations that both had their circumstances. Frodo saw atrocities done by Mordor and assumed that he was on the right side, but what if the whole time Sauron wasn't evil?

Well... you know, hypothetically. I kind of want to take that approach, though not exactly the "warring nations" thing.
>>
>>78079069
yeah you dont wanna go that way because it's been done to death, and if it was done again today it'd just seem like edgy politics. i for one think it's important that we can trust some poeple and just do good and trust it's right. sometimes. and that attitude is dying
But yeah that KIND of thing. that kind of deception makes for interesting quest stories. Hell Kevin no Daibouken is doing that. if a comic that silly can make that work then you know it's a good tactic.

It won't get anywhere even if you have content, if it's shit. But you'll learn and grow as a creator based on feedback from the general public. You can't improve if you don't know where you're shit.
