I think people genderswapping characters simply do it for the fun of seeing how they could flip a character design into another direction while keeping the base theme. The problem, however, is when they fail horribly at it and it looks fugly or too busy. Most of the cringe art posted here is an attempt to make a character look different, meaning a body type not drawn very often or exaggerating different traits for the sake of being 'different', rather than actually wanting to make something that looks good to them. The result is a weird abomination that is similar to when your child comes back from college in a fursuit with a metrosexual pansexual boyfriend while claiming to be a fairykin.

I'm really not being cynical, it's just kind of an accepted fact. Now ideally making good art would make you more money, but that's clearly not how it works. Marketing and hype play into things. I'm not saying they need to disregard quality in general just for the sake of making headlines, but if that's what the market responds to then they have to do it because making money takes precedence. They do try to also tell good stories along the way but it is what it is. You just can't cut the money out of these discussions because it's the main reason publishers exist.

I graduated college in 2011 and I only saw bits of this during my senior year. I was also friends with too many Austin hipsters.

I think that queer theory vocabulary & discourse started being disseminated thru tumblr and shit, and people (some attention whores, some true-to-life trans ppl) discovered these terms and found 'their truth' or whatever in them.

It started with people who only had the internet to lean on, but I think as time went on and those 14-year-old tumblrs grew older and went to college and shit they started to care more about IRL representation and visibility.

I know if I knew what agender was in college a lot of my personal dissonance about who I was would've made much more sense. (I told my college best friend that I didn't identify as male in my senior year and he told me to never tell anyone else.... lol)

Tumblr's gender-insecure, histrionic, anti-white, female-juxtaposing culture has hardened me against trying to even be the least bit inclusive in my own creative works and projects.

At one time I entertained the idea of a trans character just to drive home a story about tolerance, and how leaving trans people alone to live their lives in peace as they choose to do so wasn't hurting anybody or making them change anything about society outside the trans group's little bubble.

but then I caught wind of exactly what the pro-trans "rights" culture wants. They want inclusion of themselves in the definitions of male and female in order to not just be trans, but redefine what male and female mean. This whole 'gender' thing isn't just a way to decouple the implication of coitus from our different sexes, it's become a schizophrenic way to pretend you can be a girl or a boy without the equipment or chromosomes. That's all it is. They use gender because they've taken gender to mean "role" and not your sexual characteristics derived from your genitals. Gender is the social implication of your sex, and they want it decoupled from your chromosomes and genitals for everyone.

"I'm not an anomaly, I'm just trans/non-binary and you're cis/binary."

Then they went and inserted themselves into the definition of orientation. Bisexual used to encompass people that'd be attracted to you whatever your gender or genitals. Now, Pansexual is "the good bisexual," because they've decided pansexual likes you whatever your gender. Bisexual miraculously becomes 'intolerant' again.

I wish these people would stop insisting on redefining words and then correcting people of the anomalous way they're misusing them and just become a religion already. But they're smart. They're trying to forcibly change the discourse without so much as a debate on words or their legal definition and use their status as minority and protected people to MAKE them right. Debate is intolerant.
