This is a poorly written attempt to draw parallels to minority representation in the media. It falls apart when you realize there's tons of robot/cyborg characters that are good guys.

No, in fact there's often a point in the story where they say clearly that, while a cyborg, the protag is just as good as any human. Astroboy, Casshern and so on. Don't talk out of your ass.

Bionic Six. It's entire premise was literally about a multi-cultural family of cyborg super heroes. Kinda eye-rollingly racist in a way they portray people but it was the late 80s and they were trying. The charm still holds up. Check out the opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_RdPawsqgo

You don't have a penis.

I remember an episode of GitS where a cyborg almost went on a shooting spree because he was so frustrated by having no penis.
>>
>>77870181
And it usually comes to existentialism or ostracism, the nature of consciousness and identity, not 'there's not enough good robots on TV'
>>
>>77870181
Identity politics and minority representation seem to be the hot topic in the media nowadays and comic writers for the most part can't write for shit. There are ways to write Cyborg's lost of humanity without making racial parallels and have it be something that make us empathize with him but welp!

>>77870165

>>
>>77870535
How long did this last?
>>
>>77870538
It's hard not to be sensitive nowadays. SJWs just kinda poisoned the concept of diversity to the point that people are having a negative reaction to it.

Like look at Indivisible, I donated to the campaign, played the demo, and I enjoy the character designs. But when I saw the MC my kneejerk reaction was to go "What is this SJW shit!?" This is not a good feeling to have to make that type of judgements.

Burger King Kid's Club diversity is a good way to describe it. It's awkward and forced but lacks the argument starting venom that topic has today. I used to think it was strange and embarrassing at the time but now look back fondly on it.

It feels alot like nowadays that the diversity being preached is just segregation in disguise.

>>77869093
>mah 30-something year old nigga

>>77871960
It's negative stereotype in the US and possibly other countries with some basis in reality. There are many reasons but it basically boils down that the average black person in the US has less opportunities to swim then the average white person thus fewer of them know how to swim.. This of course has nothing to do with physical abilities.
>>
>>77871960
Inner-city kids with no money have far fewer opportunities to get good at swimming. Since nothing says "poor inner-city kid" like a black kid, they got lumped with the stereotype, same way they got lumped with the stereotype of liking fried chicken and watermelons when they brought southern cuisine north with them.

As far as non-swimmers go, I've always found it more surprising how many sailors are incapable of swimming. There's multiple solo-around-the-world sailors who were incapable of swimming.
>>
>>77870659
> But when I saw the MC my kneejerk reaction was to go "What is this SJW shit!?" This is not a good feeling to have to make that type of judgements.
> Pretending this is a problem for normal people

No, fuck that. If you choose to spend so much time in the 4chan/tumblr echo chamber that a picture of a brown girl triggers you I would strongly advise finding something else to do with your time for at least part of the day. And trying to shift the blame on to SJW's poisoning the idea of anything different is a shitty attitude to have as well. They are annoying people on the internet, they didn't fuck you in the ass in an alley or something. Pretending that SJW's are a legitimate reason to have a kneejerk reaction to shit is pitiful.
>>
>>77871960
A couple of guys have pointed out more modern reasons, but the most influential thing was probably the fact that slave masters didn't want their slaves swimming since it was mostly useless for work and it would help facilitate escape.
>>
>>77870659
I've had that feeling before, but what? This is the first I'm even hearing about the game, but the main character is far from tumblrbait.
>>

All that projection. Calm down man. You're making a lot of assumptions about me and I believe you're prepared to move goalposts on anything I say in defense on the matter.

I kick myself for the reaction I had to Indivisible because I'm of the firm belief of giving something a fair shake. But come on man, I got certain hobbies and I hear and read all this crazy shit going on I can't help but have some fatigue to it.
>>
>>77872305
The logic was in the old days that if your ship went down it was far better to drown right away rather than swim for a day or so and drown anyway, aware of how to survive in the water but with not enough energy to resist. Which would suck if you were shipwrecked a mile offshore and drowned with the dry land in spitting distance.
>>
>>77872738
I am not that, anon, but I want to know. What irked you about the MC of that game? I gave it a superficial look and it seem to just be a generic brow girl going on a generic JPRG adventure.
>>
>>77872857
I see a lot of SJW types pushing for the vaguely ethnic character look nowadays. Diversity before gameplay, y'know. But the more I looked into the more I really got into it.

But now that I look back on it I had a similar reaction to Dragon's Crown. I went, "what is this fucking fapbait shit!?" Then I watched a trailer of it and realized it's a glorious return of the DND arcade beatem up from the 90s. Amazon ended up being mai waifu.
>>
>>77872780
Which is all fine and dandy until you go overboard and sink like a rock instead of get rescued by your shipmates.

I think the explanation is much simpler. People didn't swim recreationally back then, and the people manning ships were poor people plucked off of harbours all over the place, rather than hand-picked from fishermen who'd actually spent their life on the sea. Poor people had even less time to frolick about in a lake, because they were working 20-hour days just to stay out of the poorhouse. And once you were manning a ship you had no time to learn how to swim, despite spending all your time at sea. Then you start consoling yourself with the idea that it's better to drown quickly, because you have no choice.

None of this explains modern sailors and definitely not the solo-sailors, though. They're just fools.
>>
>>77873043
>>77872857
I have to add I very quickly warmed up to Ajna's character design and realized what they were going for. If they play it straight and just go full blown JRPG with it I'd fucking love to hell and back. I love generic JRPGs much in the same way I generic Godzilla movies. I know what I want and I know how to get it but if there's a bit of a change up I'm down for it.
>>
>>77872738

Honestly that was a little extreme, mostly because I'm not just upset with you, but having to listen to people cry about SJW's every fucking time I come here. If I wanted to hear about tumblr every day I'd be visiting tumblr, or at least the non-porn parts of tumblr.

But honestly look at what you're saying. You're saying that the influence of teen and twenty something shits on the internet has "poisoned" the concept of diversity. Just think about that for a second. You looked at a relatively attractive, not frumpy, but not slutted up either, brown girl and said, "what is this SJW shit?" I stand by my statement that this is not a normal attitude to have and you may be too invested in these conversations.

> I got certain hobbies and I hear and read all this crazy shit going on I can't help but have some fatigue to it.

Which is why I would still advise getting up and doing something else for a while for some perspective. The world will continue to make sexy video games and there's a world outside of /v/.

Oh I agree it's not normal but it's not a normal time. SJW politics are becoming strangely popular. I would consider myself a moderate liberal and I'm hearing support of SJW politics from friends and co-workers who I thought were moderate in a similar degree to me. Back in August a freshman biology student got upset at me when I was discussing diseases caused by extra X or Y chromosomes and she threw a shitfit that I would considered Klinefelter's a disease because it a man had an extra X chromosome. It was bizarre and weird and she tried to make complaints to the Biology department's head. It was like watching some /pol/ conspiracy come to life.

>>77870538
Well, obviously one can't prove what the writer had in mind unless they said what was meant, but it seems likely that that was the message that they were trying to convey. There's an obvious parallel between the negative self esteem caused by negative portrayals of cyborgs in the media and the negative self esteem caused by negative portrayals of blacks in the media, which is typically a concern of SJW's. It's possible that the writer was clueless of the parallel, however that seems very unlikely. Cyborg is not written in a vacuum. When you're writing a character, you're probably going to base most of their beliefs off of your own beliefs and beliefs of other people. The obvious belief that this would be based off of is the one which finds problematic portrayals of blacks in the media. The writer may have been aware of the parallel but disagreed with the message it is parallel to. This too I find unlikely. Why should the writer have Cyborg whine about media representation? I'll let you answer that question. Why did the writer accentuate Cyborg's final point? I will let you answer that question too. I will say that, while I have not read this particular comic, that excerpt is quite out of character for the Cyborg I've read about in comics. I will also point out that there is a long tradition of comparing being a cyborg to being black in stories featuring Cyborg -- heck, the character practically seems made for this specific purpose. And I will say that it is common that writers communicate through their writing, their protagonists, and especially through heroes and many other comics have had SJW messages recently. Of course, admitting that the message was intentional, it's possible that the author is not an SJW, just someone concerned about the representation of blacks in the media. However the initial criticism was not a personal attack against the author, but an attack against the vehicle of communicating an idea and how it fails to conform with reality.
