I joined the girl scouts in 1st grade as a Brownie, left when I was a cadet at the end of 8th grade. In hindsight I am extremely divided about the overall experience. On the one hand it taught me entrepreneurship, some first aid, how to build a fire, sew, cook, craft, dance, ride a horse, fish, rappel, hike, shoot an arrow, lots of community service stuff. I left after receiving a silver award. One the other hand, many members of my troop did not like me at all and often excluded me whenever they had the chance. I was the oddball, I admit it, but they really made me feel like a total schmuck. Thankfully we all matured a bit by the time I left. . I left on good terms, but I still left, I couldn't take the teasing bullshit anymore. GS teaches you good skills if you have a good troop leader, but the sisterhood element mainly depends on your social adeptness. In the sense that many girls scouts can be nasty bullies to each other, these depictions are very much true.

I was in the boy scouts.

We had... I think two camps a year, which were basically a huge group of kids and a bunch of twentysomething scount leaders doing stuff innawoods or innasnow innamountains and some sort of activity every other weekend, come rain or shine.

It was fun and being extracurricular, it was basically the only place where assholes got some sort of comer-up for bullshit everybody had to deal with on their account. Like for example, our scout leaders had Krampus throw the ass in his sack head first and carry him off as a punishment once.

That sucks. I did Royal Rangers which is essentially religious boy scouts with the assemblies of god church and we did a bunch of cool shit. We would go on 4+ campouts a year. My favorite was the winter campout. We would go in groups of 2-3 and build our own shelters using limbs from trees and rope and that's it. We'd have to dig our own fire pit near the shelter to keep warm. There was also FCF which was like old time reenactments basically (the years depended on what states you were from.) We would throw tomahawks and knives and shoot blackpowder rifles and stuff. Honestly my favorite part of growing up right next to playing baseball.

Was in scouts for 25 years from age 5, from cub to assistant leader, loved it. Don't have much time to do it right now, but if I did, I'd be back in a shot.

Had a large camp every year, smaller ones throughout.

Have gone to switzerland, france and africa with my troop.

Have climbed up mountains, rafted down rivers in full flood, played on top of glaciers.

Years later scouts come up to the leaders and retell anecdotes from those times.

Never lost a single one either, though their have been injuries - usually due to stupidity.

Mixed gender troop, the girls usually listen to instruction better but if they don't like someone they will refuse to work with them. We also had to split up some of the girls and mix them up for various activities to stop it getting too clique-y.

And you get the usual relationship drama from taking a buunch of teenage boys and girls away from parents for a week.

So I love scouting. But I will acknowledge that it varies from troop to troop, and depends very much on the leaders - shit leaders mean shit troop.

I remember in elementary school once on Halloween the students were taken to a nursing home to sing themed songs to the people there. We probably did it on other holidays too, but that time always stuck with me because half the kids were dressed as skeletons or the grim reaper. I later learned that my dad designed the building.

When I was young, I joined a sort of off-brand Boy Scouts sponsored by my church called THE CALVINIST CADET CORPS.

I remember going camping and participating in a model car racing tournament(we had to fashion our car out of a block of wood. Mine looked like the race car from Monopoly, but with black flames).

I never got any badges(Closest I got to getting one was a chess badge) because I was a lazy shit.

It was overall fun though. Got a spark from a campfire in my eye on one trip though.

My denomination (WELS) had their own off-brand Scouts equivalent called the Lutheran Pioneers, and it was okay. I never did much with it, and it was more like a church youth group than a real organization. Most chapters did their own thing, and church members would be in charge instead of any leaders. This meant that what was done was radically different depending on where you were. So when our family lived in South Dakota, there were stuff like Pine Car Derbies and whatnot but there was also stuff like this:
