alright, I've been using photoshop for a long time to do my art, but I've been really slowing down

I'm starting to wonder if its just my fault, or if there's just some aspects of photoshop that don't make it cohesive to drawing. If this is the case, what other programs can I use?
>>
>>77759259
People like Manga Studio a lot.
>>
>>77759267
Really? I always figured, based on the name, that it was just a meh program that used "manga" in its title to attract people who don't know any better. Where can I download a trial, and how much is it if I end up liking it?
>>
>>77759330
It goes on sale for $15 pretty often.
>>
>>77759375
dang, that's pretty cheap
>>
>>77759330
funny thing about assumptions
basically mangastudio (otherwise known as clipstudio) is an improved version of photoshop with less bloat, more pen sizes and different tool presets, a stabilizer, and some other really neat features. the only thing photoshop has on it is its painting, which is where photoshop kinda has everyone else beaten (though imo it's not that good for painting. now polaroid photomax SE? that thing paints like a mofo)

I know this might vary a lot, but What's the absolute best program for making a webcomic in your respective opinions? What other program does it work well with (someone might prefer to import work from one program into another to further modify it etc.)

Why do you think so?

An example I've seen in these threads is :

Manga Studio: Has Stabilization. Checked it out and it's pretty awesome for tracing sketches
>>
>>77764288

From what I've seen, this is what each of the top choices favor:
>Comics/Manga - Manga Studio/Clip Studio (same program)
>Drawing/Painting - Paint Tool Sai
>Overall - Photoshop

There's no wrong answer but Clip Studio is on sale for $15 right now. If you want a Photoshop, Gimp is a free alternative. Not as good but still has a lot of the features.

So I got an idea watching some earlier episodes of The Simpsons and I always wanted to bring it out

A 3-4 panel comic where a person opposes against a forced subject with his own rightful independent thoughts about it.

The last panel will always be the "antagonist, or person forcing the subject" of the strip pushing a button saying "INDEPENDENT THOUGHT ALARM".

pic related, a shitty draft made 0 hours in MS Paint

Hi, how's /hyw/ today?

I wanted to ask about a couple of things. First, does anyone have any advice on managing color schemes? Whenever I start a new scene, I have a lot of trouble picking them out, so I usually take vague colors from photographs.

I was also wondering about lighting. Most of my pages have really low-contrast lighting because it's easy (and easy on the eyes?), I guess. I want to practice more dramatic lighting, but I don't really know where to start. Thoughts?

And here's the newest page of my webcomic (Bicycle Boy). I skipped posting a couple before this one because I wasn't super fond of them.

I've been looking into making some sentai, so I was throwing ideas on how should I approach it.
>Island city find a new source of energy, a mineral or something
>Independs itself from the mainland country it belonged (I won't probably use any real location to make my job easier)
>New energy means superior weaponry that supports its independence
>A few years laters, monsters start attacking the island
>A group of heroes is formed to stop the threat
>MC is a big fan of these heroes
>He finds out his friend and other guys from school are said heroes
>Eventually, he gets involved in the attacks of the monsters
>Since he's always mixed in the fights, they make him some sort of tactitian to lead how they should attack

So, basically, they make him an honorary member because it makes easier to protect him if he can contact them when monsters appears, but he doesn't do any of the fighting, nor he's the leader, he's like a groupie in a rock band, but the story still focuses on him.
I was thinking of making him some sort of pacifist, who tries to avoid killing the monsters, and diminish the damage to the city or something like that.
I have some more stuff in my mind, but that would be endgame stuff.
What do you think of it so far?

I still need to think a design, I'm not very fond of the usual tokusatsu clothing, so I may go on my own with the costumes, but still keeping it as sentai as possible.

It's Saturday, and you know what that means!

What do you guys think?
>>
>>77769655
I think that by combining pretty, athletic women with classic superhero stories you're inevitably letting the former overshadow the latter.

Or that might just be me, I'm one of these guys who want to shape their story just so I can have an excuse to draw more pretty women.

Either way, miss capoeira there is pretty cool.
>>
>>77761469
You can't seem to take critique very well. If everyone in this thread thinks your character designs look like obvious ripoffs of something else then whatever readers you manage to get will see it too and you'll keep getting the same feedback until something changes. You can't prevent that by going "nu-uh, go away!".
>>
>>77764288
>>77764399

Manga Studio is specifically geared towards making comics (it's what I use). That's it's primary purpose, unlike Photoshop's jack-of-all-trades approach. If you just want one program that does everything, instead of switching between two or more, then choose Manga Studio/Clip Studio. And right now it's on sale this weekend for just $15.

FireAlpaca and MediBang Paint are free, and also have tools specifically made for making comics (page set-up templates, etc). FA and MBP are virtually identical, but MBP has more features, and if you create an account with them you can benefit from cloud file storage and sharing (you can work on a picture on both desktop PC and Android tablet, for example). Not as fully featured as Photoshop, but great for making lineart sketches and comics.

i like a lot of things about that, especially the interesting way of handling the usual cliches like 'that one guy who's always in the middle of shit'
works for me man
as for outfits i'm most fond of metal heroes but that's harder to draw eh
>>
>>77769655
shading on eyes has always seemed weird to me, but especially how it tends to be the shadow of the brow, but it makes the eyeballs look concave..
anyway this is pretty neat. i've seen a lot of artists do the 'action doubles of the character aren't shaded until they land' and it never occurred to me til now that that was sort of to save on work.. i just thought it was meant to make them look transparentish. they used to do it in spider-man a lot.. Of course they DO still get drawn in much lighter colors sot he transparentishness is there too, so maybe it's both. either way something i never analyzed before, and you just made me pay attention to it. I learned a thing
>>
>>77772072
i will never get tired of that dynamic. It used to be a lot more common, back in the day when it was still kinda hip to think your parents were lame. I think at one point Krusty was going to be Homer
>>
>>77773051

Yea but it's sterile and I like the taste.

About the plot?

All the characters in the picture belong to a culture(s) descended from a race of space faring "humans" that crashed on the planet which they currently reside.

The present time in which above characters live in is some 300 years after the crash, where their people are beginning to slowly lose the knowledge and science of their ancestors and have already become quite primitive by comparison.

On this (Did I menrion mostly desert) planet also exist several warlike tribes of indigenous "humans" who though their technology is not nearly as advanced as the "Sky people", seemto have once been somewhat advanced. Evident to their toting around of firearms and driving of fossil fueled vehicles. Though the natives are still very primitive.

There are also several non human lifeforms o the planet. Most are fauna... But some are intelligent, sentient beings that pose a danger to both groups of humans.
>>
>>77773440
>On this (Did I menrion mostly desert) planet also exist several warlike tribes of indigenous "humans" who though their technology is not nearly as advanced as the "Sky people", seemto have once been somewhat advanced. Evident to their toting around of firearms and driving of fossil fueled vehicles

>>
>>77773440
if it's a desert then why does everyone wear big, heavy, stuffy, robes.
>>
>>77773572

When you get attacked, it's generally a good idea to defend.

I uploaded a drawing, posted a premise. Anons felt the need to find fault with it, I felt the need to stick up for my concepts.

Should I have ripped up the drawing and abandoned the idea because a few of you didn't like it?

Threads called "Hows your webcomic going?", not /IC/.
>>
>>77773634
We're not attacking you, we're critiquing you. Critique is very much welcome in this thread.
>>
>>77773634
>Anons felt the need to find fault with it
>what is constructive criticism
christ dude
>>
>>77773600

Because the girl in the grey and the lady in the blue still belong to a though declining, still technologically advanced society where such conviences as air conditioning and underground quarters are quite possible.

The young woman in the white and black is wearing a sari, like womens clothing in real world india where at certain times of year can get very hot... Yet women still wear it,

The tall, woman in the black is a warrior and is wearing a military uniform that is stilll pretty loose.

But yea, no one wears robes in the desert. Should tell the Arabs to stop the ridiculousness.
>>
>>77773496
i like aliens and psychics in my desertpunk. good for you
>>
>>77773648
eh. there was a mixture of critique and an attack on taste. this guy is at least getting a much colder welcome than he deserves
and nobody yet has gotten to the genuine core of the issue, which is that the art is still very naive and juvenile and needs fundamental work
>>
>>77772369
your art seems quite stiff and awkward but i doubt you'd really take any of what I say to heart as you're quite an abrasive asshole
>>
>>77773729
well the idea with flowing robes in the desert is to wear enough cloth to shield you from the sun but it still flows around you and lets air circulate. Obviously you're not yet at the level where you can draw flowing cloth, so you've drawn stiff thick robes.. which look a lot cooler, but aren't as desert-appropriate. You'll get there though, worry about that later. though there's no reason you couldnt just make it a cold desert if you wanted.
>>
>>77773648

Think theres a difference between normal constructive criticism where you find fault.

Apposed to a bit of the attitude I'm finding here where people are going out of their way to call fault on what I've posted.
>>
>>77773496
Woah dude, there is no shame in being compared to Mad Max. There's shitloads of desert themed apocalypse punk stories, with weaponized vehicles or not, and they all still have their unique differences from each other.
I was really quite honored when someone likened /my/ comic to Mad Max, because Mad Max is cool, so I don't see why you're upset.
>>
>>77773786

And you're an abusive one.
>>
>>77773816
i think, like many attitudes, that 'tude is trying to 'make up for something'
in this case they are so desperate to avoid hugbox that they get hostile with anything that triggers their 'this is so bad' itch.
but it is pretty bad, guy. I think you know that. you're just looking for help, not just a list of which parts are bad, right? Some actual help that helps you improve
>>

I love Mad Max, just kind of felt that particular poster was trying to call unoriginality. But... Sure this post could be turned against me too.
>>
>>77773846

Well that would be better, thank you.

But I still like them big lips.
>>
>>77773876
I'm not going to nitpick anyone elsems posts, but yeah it can sometimes sting a little when you make up a big cool sory world and the first thing you hear is 'oh hey that looks just like x!' , but don't worry about it too much. Nothing is truly original. Everybody takes their inspiration from somewhere. Should your story resemble another, that's totally fine, just as long as they aren't carbon copies.
But y'all probably know this already

At no point did I say this. I said if your story resembles (or draws inspiration from) another one, there's nothing to be ashamed of. Every new story will resemble other, older stories.
But IF your story (or anyone's story, for that matter) were a carbon copy of any already existing story, it would be uncool, and people would call you out on it.

It's ok, dude.

Thanks for your insight. I think the costumes will be Tokusatsu-ish, but I don't want helmets. I may use some kinda of clothes that adjusts to body size with metal armor or other stuff here and there.
So far, I have ideas for the leader, who will be the classic big guy, who will probably use a cehst piece for armor, elbow and knee pads and some face accesory that helps hide his face. He will be always loud and earnest.
I have a sniper girl, who will have a cowboy hat because why not, I wasn't sure if making her always chewing gum, and her costume would have armor on her shoulders and waist. She would be silent most of the time, with her feet over tables or somehting.
I have a slender speedy guy too, but I wasn't sure if I had to give him a spiky hair, I wanted to make him kinda impulsive and like the little brother of the group.

I have two more "slots", but I'm not sure what kinda characters would fit in.

If that's your reaction to critique or feedback that isn't praises you're not suited to work in any creative field.

If you make a postapocalyptic comic with the description you provided people, your future readers included, are going to draw parallels to Mad Max whether you like it or not. Getting mad about it is only going to give you a bad rep.

Not necessarily. You can make a perfectly good post knowing full well that it'll kick off an argument that will amuse you. This would constitute trolling without making a bad post.

even the people giving it can't always tell the difference. it's best to acknowledge that you might make a few mistakes in judgment along the line, too, and give the benefit of the doubt. at worst, you'll shame the person trying to hurt you

The universe is set after a big galactic war, the fallout of which crashed onto a planet with primitive humans. The humans believed these artifacts to be from the gods, and through trial and error ( and many deaths ) the advanced technology was so user friendly that the civilization learned how to ( very crudely ) use some of it.

Differences in opinions as to how these God Artifacts should be utilized resulted in the largest war their world had ever seen. The victor of this world war earning claim to the objects and the burden of discovering what they all meant exactly.

The first order of business for scholars under the new ruling Empire was to understand the words of the gods, and learn how to speak and read them. While a complete understanding of God Speak was never found, they did eventually learn the phrases used to activate certain machines; Some of those machines being a few of the space ships that were still functional.

So, the first humans embarked on a journey into the heavens; What they found instead was a Great Darkness. Common people assumed the Great Darkness to be something akin to the River Styx for the heavens -- a great pathway into the afterlife.

It didn't take them long to realize this pathway to the heavens meant death for the living, It was assumed the Great Darkness was full of lost souls trying desperately to join the living again, so they would frantically try to drain the life out of anyone they could get their hands on.

After a few failed attempts, they gained access to a large dormant ship in orbit still mostly intact that they named the Emperor Ship. The ship has access to a large stock of colonization tools used by the previous civilization.

It was at this point that the Emperor determined the destiny of his Empire was to extend into the heavens and meet the gods face to face. At which point, every single man and woman under his rule would become the equivalent of a god.

The actual story is called Space Bar'd

It's a Comedy primarily with some Action and Drama in there too.

The style is medieval with a tinge of Retro-futurism.

>Sent on a fake divine mission by a Duke who grew annoyed with them, a Jester (Rohesia) and a Bard (Peyton) must carry a large group of priceless "God Artifacts" and place them at places of "power" across the galaxy. They asked not for riches, or fame, but for the chance to play a show on the Emperor Ship; The only place with the ability to send audiovisual messages to every settlement. Along with carrying out their divine mission, Rohesia and Peyton decide to turn their travels into a tour of sorts; trying to play at every single tavern in each settlement they travel to. With stars in their eyes it was easy for the two "heroes" to overlook the danger hauling a bunch of priceless - yet equally useless - artifacts puts them in. The two seek the help of a Thief named Berta, and a Swordsman named Colin to accompany them on their journey which will take them to the ends of the galaxy.

The Character Peyton posesses a God Artifact which has the ability to play an electric guitar using a standard keyboard peripheral. This Artifact is essentially a rock band rolled into one back mounted terminal; Equipped with an ejectable microphone, built in amps, and plethora of pre-made percussion samples. The Duke of Rhoads hates the sound of Peyton's artifact, yet Peyton insists on trying to prove himself to the Duke in the hopes of getting a gig performing for him.

or if you dont wanna give the scifijargon, what is the phenomenon?

It's space. More specifically how the explain the phenomenon of oxygen being blown out of a ruptured hull, and people not being able to breath the air. To them the vacuum of space is an aggressive being.

Rohesia loves to sing comedic folk songs, and was appointed to the Duke in the attempt to "lighten him up" after he was reprimanded for having too many hangings. (Some random sketches.)

Berta joined the crew under the guise of a trader with an interest in showing them how to survive on the "road". In reality, she's taking the God Artifacts from every place of power shortly after they've placed them, and flipping them for profits.

Colin is a self-trained Swordsman. learning everything he knows from training with a dummy. Equipped with an extremely low self-esteem, he wonders if he'll ever really be good at what he does; Yet he continues to throw his body into the fray looking for something to prove himself, and this divine mission sounds like the perfect opportunity.
>>
>>77786443

They brute forced their way into everything and literally stumbled upon a way to deploy pre-built settlements from the Emperor Ship.

One of the settlements named:
"MY FIRST SETTLEMENT (125)"
(Colloquially referred to as "One Two Five")

Is a mash up of ill-informed settlement building from the initial discovery of the Emperor Ship. There are plenty of these scattered across The Great Darkness, but this one is one of the most popular. The architecture makes no sense, halls that just end up in dead ends, domes on top of domes, it was very much the work of one who had no idea what they were doing. This particular settlement became a home to a plethora of criminals, and is generally thought to house a lower class of citizens.

Suits of armor are placed over the futuristic form fitting space suits. I'm still on the fence about this one mainly because it depends on the futuristic "invisible helmet projected from the collar" thing. There's probably a way to design something better.
>>

Nothing for Christmas. Maybe Valentines Day if I'm still doing this.
>>
>>77786846

Thanks, I'm having fun writing up all sorts of ideas for settlements.

>(Haven was discovered when travelers echoed the Emperor's mission into a ship's voice activated navigation systems hoping they'd be taken straight to the Gods' door step. What they found instead was a horrifying beast never before thought to exist.)

>Haven is a rather large city, taking up around 1,700 square miles of land, and all of it is in a state of disrepair with large gaps of sectors without power, without life support, or completely destroyed.

>A giant drone simply known as "The Metal Dragon" regularly feasts upon the city, consuming power structures to keep itself active. The drone also attempts to disable the ships of anyone foolish enough to travel to the city, and the survivors of those attacks have remained stranded in a barely functional settlement for generations.

>Not too long after the first settlers got comfortable they realized the Metal Dragon was slowly killing them; It was taking the power of the city little by little every two years to remain active. Because of the dragon's apparent hunger, they regularly attempt to provide offerings to the beast in the hopes that it won't return as often.

>No one that has traveled to Haven has ever managed to come back.

i would like to see something akin to helmets built to accomodate goggles and mouthpieces, and because they form fit around those, they preserve the airtight seal.
Like basically they found gasmask-like equipment, realized it could protect a person from toxic gas and smoke, and figured it was a kind of tiki to protect against miasmas.. the perfect thing to keep out the deep darkness. then they just built a helmet to go around it because you gotta protect yer head.. and just.. yknow, the gasmasks integrate fine into the suits and their oxygen equipment

in any case, good job adding more detail to the ears, and nice job with the console rim lighting. Did you use a linear dodge layer for that?

It'd be a bit like getting recommended a video for viewing on youtube. AI recommendations only go so far, and AI's only a better version of our own. No AI sentience in this universe.

First panel with the shading I colored Walsh from his regular palet. Dropped a flat "shadow" over him with a multiply layer. Then added the highlight with a color dodge layer. In all subsequent panels I just color picked with the eyedropper from that first panel and just colored normally.

I've still got a lot to learn with Manga Studio 5. But it's much more efficient.

Lack of experience mainly; I've been drawing for a while, bu this is the first time I've tried to tell a story of this scale; previously the MOST I did was a 7-page short.

I'm not this guy but he wrote some honest reviews of some of the comics here (Dewd's comic, Green Knight, Vigor Mortis, Love Me Like an Autograph, and a few others) and explained his criticisms of art, writing, etc in detail... and he also writes The Sisters comic: http://brianreviews.tumblr.com/

I've been working on this, and I'm having trouble staying disciplined and drawing every day. I'm considering just setting timers for myself (for like half-an-hour or an hour or whatever) and dedicating that time to art and nothing but.

Any tips for remaining focused/disciplined?

I've improved my art enough in just these five panels that I want to go back and rework the first ones, but if I do that, then I won't make any forward progress argh
>>

I don't think he was the person you were initially talking to here >>77793803, nor was I - I posted a link to his review site because you asked for examples of "bad writing" and explanations, which he provides there. He and his artist produce some of the best, most competent (and professional looking/reading) work in this thread, so I don't get what ya problem is. He isn't an asshole in his reviews - he has thoughts about these works and then reasonably rationalizes them.

Well it is, I just have no idea when I'm going to publish it, since I like things to be really good before I put my name on it.

>semi-typical A.I. that achieves conscience but not emotions, slowly becomes more "human" by either learning how to simulate emotions or through adapting to be more efficient. Creates A.I. and has a "motherly" relation with those
>Humans that for survival stripped their organic bodies of flesh to the point where only their brain remains, heavily altered, to be more efficient. They slowly become less human to "evolve"
>A.I. overmind that's driven by pure instinct to evolve, it does so by imitating nature, mixing different traits from living creatures on its drones. Not really self aware.

>It's worth saying that the first and part of the second group are protagonists while the rest are either antagonists or a "force of nature" on the last case .

The first two are basically factions that will have important characters, for obvious reason will not.
>>
>>77798152
>Oh it's that fag? He's one to talk.
Well, I don't contest the first part I do take issue with the second. I'd love for someone to rip apart my work, I honestly would; that's how I have always grown as a writer. You need brutality to see what needs handling. And I admit, currently, our pacing is a bit off because we're sort of in a mid-headed-towards-end of season episode issue. Things are happening at their own rate, building off prior things, and it seems awkward but it'll hopefully work out when we get to the end.

I by no means think my work is flawless. I honestly don't even think much of it is that great. I think it is a decent installment for its genre, but that's not exactly hard to do. A lot of stuff in Urban Fantasy is very generic or over the top, and I think we've avoided part of that issue by focusing less on the usual route. You've got to have your Storm Fronts and Fool Moons to get to Grave Peril. You start off building the rules, and eventually you can enjoy yourself within them.

If you'd like to tell me why you don't like my comic (I've heard color palette and character design before), by all means inform me. I'm here to improve, same as anybody else.

>>77798647
Honestly a lot of it comes down to how long the comic is. I've got no issue binge-reading something long if I have the time, or if it happens to actually be amazing. Been trying to get back into reviews but I've been doing some client-work and consultant gigs, plus I'm moving in a few days.

Occupational hazards.

I've got a lot of comics I have half-finished or somewhat started reviews for, which I never finished up because they either rebooted (Lucky Hazard guy, your new stuff is a lot sharper and part of the reason I never published my look at your older stuff), or they were too short to really give a very thorough looking at despite me having thoughts on them, or they're too long and it's something of an imposing task.

But I do want to get back into it.
>>
>>77799093
My comic honestly isn't long enough right now to warrant a review - the first issue isn't even over.
>>
>>77799093
I just want to say that your advice has been very helpful, and I didn't know you were the guy who wrote the Sisters series!

But anyways, yeah, I've been trying to follow it, except that part about stopping the comic entirley, I'm in to deep to do that.
>>
>>77799415
To be fair, your comic was a lot lot worse when I wrote that almost six months ago. You're making your forward a bit at a time and while I'd personally hold off a period of time and come back with stronger things, your system is clearly working for you.

So good on you there. And attempting animation is always a reasonable and worthwhile pursuit, if only because you're young and the more you develop now the more possible it is for you to be good later. I've seen worse work from kids in art school than what you're producing now, and I don't mean that as an insult.

>>77799287
Well what's it about anyway? General curiosity. Could always use something to read while I'm on the train. You have a site up?

Being fast...
>>
>>77799493
I'm just talking about the way I'll deal with the topic of artificial intelligence on my work, I'm more than fully aware there isn't any narrative in there.

The story itself deals with a many other topics and concepts. So far I'm working on the outlines of the story-line and the basic rules of the universe so I don't get lost while writing. Another reason is so I won't end up going full retard like so many comics or mangas with the powercreep thing.

I'd still like to hear more opinions about those ideas though.
>>
>>77799670
>Compliment.
More of an observation, but more positive than negative. I'm trying to be impartial. If it was 2003 your work would be visually on tier with early Bonus Stage. Keep at it.

>>77799559
I honestly thought you were further along in this. I like how you do domino masks. You get the expressive Spidey eyes thing going on with MM, and the tone seems sort of funny/comedic in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles way (perhaps it's just poorly colored ninjas that conjures it up in my head). I can't really comment much given that anything I say could happen in the next few pages, but Janice looks in her mid-30s and her Driver's License is a nice visual gag. Mark has a Viewtiful Joe vibe going on, and Jackie is appropriately frumpy.

You've got the chops clearly. I'd say the only panel that really isn't great is your opening panel. If it is a county fair, I'd say you could've gotten away with pulling further back (avoiding the crowd/brush you use) and allowing you draw things in that are more colorful and eye-catching. It looks more like a farmer's market or one of those swap meets you buy antiques at from that panel alone.

Also watch how close your font is to the edge of the balloons . Panel 2 has that going on. And if you did color stripes/different colored tents you'd have a more interesting scene, especially with how blandly the trio are dressed (not an insult, they dress like normal people). Makes it pop a bit more.

>>77799857
Well the ideas work, they've been done before but what hasn't? Self-replication by an A.I. with a twist of wanting to care for the younger so it adapts in a more positive light could be interesting. Humans losing their humanity in order to live forever is transhumanism 101, but always fun to explore; especially if you maybe go a little Eternal Sunshine about it. You can revision everything about yourself and live forever, so who you once were is just data at the end of the day--that's kind of terrifying.

>>
>>77799935
The first A.I. (let's call her MIA) is not self replicating, she literally creates new, different A.I.s

The humans became almost-robots to survive a threat, initially, not to be immortal. Then they split into two different groups with very different ideologies..

And the last one would be *almost* like the zerg or the tyranid, but on a robotic flavor.

Hey, since you're at it, do you think what I've done so far with the comic warrants a redraw? Is it too inconsistent, will it drive new readers away, etc.
I'm still very early in so I'm making new pages my priority, but so far I've been a little clumsy with handling the schedule.

http://sreedurra.altervista.org/comic/page-00/
>>
>>77800055
Honestly considered it. Caught back up with some of the ones I read and a lot of things I had issues with were addressed. But it is an issue of time. Maybe if I have free time at the end of the year.

Love Me Like an Autograph is still going great, also helps to know the character names.

>>77800077
The Green Knight's improved and I really enjoyed the last two chapters. The Dullahan bit was nasty, and save for some paneling/lettering issues, it was evocative. The newer stuff is fun and I like the shift in tone and the new characters. I might have commented on that here before.

Res Nullius has improved a lot more than I anticipated and the color scenes have worked, which I didn't expect. I'd still personally give it more time before I reread it all, but the progress in a few months has been nice and a lot of my issues with it were addressed.

I'd like to reread Skal, but it makes me want to get back to my Dark Sun hack.

Carrion Girls is still a priority, once this arc is finished. Kiwi Day/N is a feat of strength, but I think the artist gets what he is doing though my end note right now for it (despite not being done) is that if he tried something a bit less ambitious it'd probably be a lot easier.

Procrastinating enough as it stands right now. Need to finish up some prose for a Sisters-related thing, do some client work, and get coffee. Hardest habit I've ever had to break.

>>77800130
I'd put them vertical, assuming that's how they're to be read. The 4 panel model, when horizontal; makes me want to read it horizontal.
Page 6, I'd have the merc look forward flabbergasted rather than between her legs (it's Farbeth who implied the bot escaped that way with his movement, makes the head under the desk funnier). Page 8 I'd have the bot land on her head, not neck; gives it more momentum + comedy + painful.

There's some awkward movements, but it isn't all that clumsy. Lot of dust on p1 panel 3, maybe more dust on panel 2 from the door?

one sec.
>>
>>77800285
I'd say page 1, panel 3, loosen her jacket since she's just wearing it for that one panel so far; and it'd let the unveiling of her load-out seem easier. Too many buttoned buttons. It feels like, as it is now, that an unveiling panel is needed with a "woosh", but loosening it up can alleviate that.

Page 3, bottom panel; while I love the expression, it registers more "what the fuck" and less "I just did that, wow." She doesn't seem super pumped, or professionally pumped; she seems more confused as to her success rather than surprised by her success. If that makes any sense

Page 6, panel 2. "But trust me" should be "And trust me" his full threat is "As a Rogue A.I. you shouldn't exist...And trust me I can still make you wish you didn't." Just reads stronger with the "And".

>>77796766

All I have to say at the moment, mostly because I need to work elsewhere. Seems interesting, I like the protagonist bot; she seems cute.

>The Green Knight's improved and I really enjoyed the last two chapters

Hey thanks! Chapter 3 and 4 were intended to be a bit more on the serious side, so I'm glad you think I pulled it off; actually means a lot coming from you.
Plus it's good to now people appreciate the tonal shifts, since I know some get turned off by that. But at knowing this makes me more confident to try new things.

Chapters 5 is going to be generally silly; more akin to the chapter with the Pixies (Chap 2), mixing action with whimsy. Chapter 6 is also on the more light-hearted side, though not as full on as chapters 2 and 5. Then chapter 7 & 8 are the "epic conclusion" to the first arc, which I'm actually pretty exited to get to since this is the furthest I've ever gotten with an art project
>>
Did any of you guys tried using 3D software?

The story behind this is simple - I want to make crude models of a few recurring locations, so I can laze my way out by just pasting a proper angle of a given model/location and trace it instead of drawing it from memory or sketches.

So what I look for in a 3D rendering software is user friendliness and an intuitive interface. I don't need complicated features, texturing and so on, I just need speed and ease of use. Do you have any recommendations? I heard SketchUp used to be okay for this but it's no longer owned by Google so I don't know what state it is in now.
>>
>>77804472
SketchUp is still good if you just want simple models for locations.
>>
I want to do a comic, but I don't have any money for comic maker software or for a drawing tablet. How are the odds that people will call me out for just drawing a comic on paper with a pen, at least for now?

>>
>>77804599

>>

>>
>>77804599
As others have said, there's nothing wrong with analogue.

If you don't have a scanner, getting a decent picture of your artwork will be tricky, but not impossible. A proper camera will also be better than a phone/tablet camera. Just be sure that it's well lit and that light isn't reflecting off the ink, it's properly framed and not tilted, and is of a suitably high resolution.
There's plenty of free software to use for minor image correction and adjustment.

>>
Slow and steady wins the race, I guess.

I wish I had more motivation to finish this faster, but it's just going so fucking slow ;_;
>>
>>77800285
>less ambitious
i guess in terms of how fucking long the story is, but the actual art couldnt be more stripped-down.. hard to call that ambition. I do like how the simplicity allows me to practice a lot of weirder poses, and in THAT way i need MORE ambition because I think I can do it. also if I was going to shade anything, this would sure as fuck make that easier.. Might need to gradually work more of that in.

I do miss doing other projects.. I'm only just recently identifying what all the other things I make are: they're pitches. Not that I'd ever pitch any of them, but that's what they are. I like doing things where all I have to do is a bunch of drawings and then just write down a story, that way I pour it all into the art and have an excuse to study. Need to study. Hungry for it. Should probably try book-illustration
>>
>>77801205
iunno if it's the backgrounds or what but i'm finding this art to be a lot clearer now
>>
>>77804472
i would never want to carefully perfectly trace the 3d models, so I find that sketching it out roughly til it looks about right is good enough for me. Then again my 3d environs suck
>>
>>77804472
>Did any of you guys tried using 3D software?
I tried using the manga studio dolls as reference, they were frustrating to use and taking photos of yourself is better. I never felt the need for 3D environments because I don't stick to precise floorplans (I stylize perspective for composition purposes) and 3D objects like cars or bikes usually suck.
These were all used as rough reference, tracing always gives very stiff results.
>>
>>77805175
>art
I meant the story. The art isn't ambitious, and the simplicity works at times; though I think if you worked more on lighting it'd be a lot nicer to look at. Your story is long, and I can really see your exploratory process in it; but it's very branching and as someone mentioned in a previous thread when you had character family trees for an already decently sized main cast---I think you could work stronger within a smaller box, and possibly get more mileage out of what you're doing.

But I haven't finished reading your work yet, this was more of a casual thought I had while looking at it from a it back; and it hasn't really changed. It's just one of those things. Some people I've met who only want to do fantasy are amazing at non-fiction about their own lives; and they vehemently refuse to try doing that rather than just fantasy. And it sucks because at the end of the day everything is just themes and tone and style; it's all the same math. Just shave off some details and replace them around and you might find something else.

Not that I'm saying your stuff is bad either, that was more a general statement.

>pitches
That's always fun to do. I've got a nice ledger filled with things like that, lots of maps and theories for things. Mostly use it for /tg/ related ideas or story ideas I can't really work on in today's market. It can be refreshing, and sometimes if something works you should try to run with it. Trying to book-illustrate can always be a fun exercise; because it is so radically different than the usual stuff we do here. Or I do in general. Especially if it is for a different target audience, or a focused TA.

I did that once for writing. Writing books for kids takes a lot of research to get it to feel right. At least my research was Tim Curry reading A Series of Unfortunate Events, nice audiobook job.
>>
>>77805436
Ohhh. I never realized my story was ambitious. On my end it was just lazy meandering, and before I realized it, all this shit happened. Like SO MUCH SHIT. Almost none of it planned.
But yeah the overflowing cast is just my Goo-esque tendency to bleed characters out of every orifice and every passing thought. It's.. characterrhea. That and, just like Xanth, my most major literary influence, everyone needs parents and a spouse and babbys ever after. Ima try to limit myself to just three for a while in the next iteration, totally unrelated to previous characters.. and then just stick Cal in because he'll be old enough by then and i have a lot of puns to use related to him
Yeah I so hear you, writing has to have a fun lemony voice to it.. but I was thinking of just letting my mom write it since it's her idea

My roommate and I are working on a webcomic, he's the artist and I'm mostly the writer. We haven't really officially done anything with it yet, but he's finished the first 8 pages.

What hosting sites work the best for others around here?

Your comic reminds me of Super Redundant... Both have good art and different kinds of characters.

Consider adding some/more running gags, something that repeats but with different variations. Now the running gags are the characters, but could we see something like the Nude Room revisited? Repetition helps remember the gag and the comic.

Also, could some outsiders, normal people visit the house and be terrified of what's going on in there? Now pretty much everyone has their quirks and they're getting used to her antics. Some outsider/normie character could bring contrast to this. The character with apparently big penis (can't remember the name) is kinda fulfilling this role, but kinda not.

Anyways, this comic has been pretty good/promising so far

>>77806500
Don't be afraid of designs; play with different ideas and see what clicks. Maybe the character is even more fun to draw if it has more interesting details on him.

You might have troubles drawing him now, but after a hundred drawings of him... you'll be doing it automatically, barely noticing.

The current concept is fine too, but is it as fine as it could be? Only you can tell.

If there's one thing I know, it's that the last thing you want to do is drown a character in unecessary details.

If you can get the character across in 10 lines, what's the point in using 20? You're just going to make it difficult for yourself when you don't need to.

That's definitely more user-friendly than the editor I was using years ago. Anyway, the problem with this and with Duke Nukem 3D's Build which I'm more familiar with is that they can't handle overlapping sectors (DN3D can use them but can't show them together and Doom requires both mods and tricks to pull it off), so normal software would be probably better if you want to put a table in your room.

Naturally, if there's no details to add that could benefit the character then you shouldn't put them there. But to me the character does look a bit barebones. How he'll look in the comic world and compared to other characters, I can't tell. Maybe he'll fit right in and it feels natural and right.

I don't know if it's the good place to talk about this, but I'd like to know how write a scenario for a comic. The only thing so far I did were simple things à la Cyanide and Happiness, with three or five panels and some half-assed jokes. Now I'd like to do a "bigger" thing, and start with a fancomic. I have a vague idea for the story, but don't know how to organize and pace it. Can anyone give me some tips on how to manage it?

This is all super good advice. I had wanted to do a lot of individual strips before getting to recurring gags, but I could definitely start earlier than I had planned.

Additionally I've been trying to sprinkle in side characters as I go, but none of them have really been revisited yet. I'll have to start getting back to them so they can be used as outsiders.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Probably means the silly looking short shorts and lower quality lineart, along with the very flat looking feet (flat as in her toes look 1mm big, not flat as in lacks depth) which clashes with the big hands.

i like how elegant all the special effects are in this universe. Not just cold angular lazor beams and glowy hyperspace nacelles, but flowy fiery rocket shiz and swirly plasma ki blasts. It's refreshing
and that's an appropriate font at least for that kinda sound. though whether it would make a sound like that I dunno (er um i mean it's in space, so.. I guess it's making that sound within the barrel)
>>
>>77815345
actually I quite like the shorts, but I just meant how the legs seem to be from a more elongated person while the head and hands are straight up superdeformed bigstyle. and yeah, tiny feet and big hands don't match. also i'd move her eyes and nose down a bit so her face proportions are better (if you have the eyebrows nearly touching the hairline now, it'll be near-impossible to make her look shocked or surprised. i speak from experience)
now that this anon mentions it though, the lower body is rougher and less defined than the cleaner upper body. although it's a sketch so that's hardly a mistake

Sounds good. What's her goal in the story? What motivates her to pursue it? What's stopping her? Who? How will she try to overcome the obstacles?

Have a bit of a proto-idea going on right now. It's a bit cluttered at the moment but it fits in my mind, at least.

Sciency, sort of fantasy story set in a strange world, inhabited by humans and other odd beings. Humanity is scattered, and many of the small civilizations remaining have developed independently from one another, after a catastrophic incident only nature could cover up. Everyone is in it for the lost technology of previous civilizations and whatever war tools the old humans used to wipe one another out, with actual exploration and mapping.out the place being a secondary priority.

There will not be any specific main character, but rather a collection of stories told all over in this universe. The stories will include: a group of robbers ultimately in it for a fabled "ultimate weapon," a frustrated inventor looking to the future rather than the past, an amnesiac girl stuck up on a satellite orbiting the world after having been put into stasis prior to the incident, a conspiracy theorist who knows more than he lets on, and some others.

I don't plan on it being a particularly big story, as much as it seems like it will be. Just a fun romp in a weird world where everyone's paths cross and I have an excuse to draw monsters, with a mystery to solve in the background. I have a bunch of ideas, which probably have better premises and concepts, but this one keeps coming back to haunt me for some reason.
>>
>>77815345
I'm thinking a mixture of dark and whimsical. I want smaller, self contained stories that push a broader narrative. So each story can use the same characters and be told (slightly) differently without ruining the overall feeling. Think folklore or fairy tales in a civil war setting.

I'll also need to work on making sure the designs are closer to the civil war. I may fudge things a little bit for breathing room/creative licensing. Maybe I should rein it in a little.

>>77815424
Noted. I see what you mean on the head, and I actually didn't mind the hands/ feet all that much. I thought they seemed proportional...may need to rethink that considering how many people think it looks weird.

Pic related was something I made a while back, did I make any of the same mistakes there?

>>77815448
The initial idea was that the protagonist attains a sort of local celebrity status when she's tried for witchcraft but allowed to walk, as in the 'modern age' of American (civil war age) politics, sorcery wouldn't be considered a crime. Glaring difference to the theocracies and monarchies witches used to find themselves living in.

Some people are of course not happy with this, and a sort of 'mob justice' ensues, forcing her to skip town. She wants to settle down, but word of her abilities has made her a high-profile commodity that important people want to utilize for their own means.

>>77812892
Why did you chose comics as a medium then?
>>
>>77815888
Short stories sounds good. So many webcomic artists have doomed their projects by allowing them to grow too big to actually finish. Knowing you've reached only 10% of your story after a 100 pages is a terrifying feeling and many are crushed under the weight of their story.

I'm mentioning this because a person I know just recently quit her webcomic that she had been making since 2006 or something. She just couldn't finish it, it got too stressfull to even think about how much work she had ahead of her all the time.

So what I'm saying is its good to hear you've planned to make a series of shorter stories. You should always prepare for the the possibility that you may get excited about new ideas in the following years. Short stories allow you to make actual, finished stories and reduce the risk of quitting before getting to the end. That's what the artist I talked about should have done with her original idea -- she would have finished it by now and could be planning a possible sequel instead of just having to quit.

From my experience, edit your stories as tight and as possible before starting the illustrations.

I'm not saying you don't know this stuff already I just feel like you really got a good thing going on over there and I sincerely wish someone had told me and some people I know about these things so I want to make sure I at least get to see you reach that magical experience of finishing a story one day. I want to read that comic. Your illustrations look really good and the worldbuilding got me excited already. Now all I want to know is what kind of a character the witch is and her personality.
>>
>>77807817

It's probably because I haven't drawn in his arm detailing, his cloak or his sidearm yet.

Another thing I could do is give him a baggy sleeve on one arm, but I'll need to mess around with that.
>>
My idea and working title. I don't plan to draw this so if you like the idea take it and go.

The name is "Ability" (this would be used for "power" or "superpowers" for the duration. I see this being a 40-50 episode run.

The idea is this. A group of 7 people (all relatively young but not all automatically in HS either) for some reason group up and happen upon a growing rock that crashed into earth. They all stand close to it and then start to feel sick and leave.

Obviously they gain powers from it (like speed, strength and later on light ESP but not to crazy lengths).

Now this all sounds rather common at this point but here is where this story is different. No one else with superpowers appears in the story. The rock loses its glow and ability to give powers. It is just them. The question is now what do they do? This is the central conflict of the series. They all have different ideas and no one can agree. One tries to be a superhero but it doesn't work out cause usually by the time crimes are announced on the police scanner it is too late. Also though he has certain abilities he is not immortal. He gets shot and dies.

Another decides to use it to make a few bucks. A few criminals see this and with his identity so easy to discover blackmail him with the kidnapping of his family to rob for them. Eventually it ends with everyone involved dying.

One while traveling who has used it to help jump start a celebrity career gets kidnapped by foreign scientist and turned into a lab rat. Eventually nothing can be gain and instead of allowing him the chance to identify them he is executed.

I have those 3 deaths worked out already (TBC)

What are some specific qualities of handsome young men?

I have an idea for a fanatical paladin / nice-guy-who-turns-out-to-be-an-antagonist. His appearance is basically someone with 21 Charisma, extremely handsome, kind of a Prince Charming or teen dream kind of thing.
>>
>>77817083
Just look at whatever popular male actor fangirls are jerking off over now.
>>
>>77817030

The other 4 though decide it is in their best interest to keep their head down and not mention anything. This only last so long as once it is known people like this exist and knowing the area it originates from it is not hard to deduce who most the people involved are with a lot of field work. The government is concerned about this situation and goes to lengths to identify the people which is then of course leaked to the media. The 4 left seeing what has happened so far either get deep into security or decide it is best to work for the government and get protection for themselves and particularly their family.

This turns into allowed test to be done and military training with also community and public relations work. I don't have it all worked out but I know one of them snaps under all this at one point and the other 3 need to put him or her down. This causes backlash and fear as innocents die in this situation as well. It generally ends with the 2-3 going into hiding and honestly has a bit of a nihilistic tone on humanity but tries to be realistic of all the potential problems that could arise with people like this existing.

It is an exaggerated R rated attempt to say "what would actually happen if people in the real world got these abilities; what would it mean for them particularly and how would it actually effect their lives?"

That's a great way to start IMO.
I did the same though in a Fairy Tale iron age setting and I think it's worked out well so far; or at least the reception's been generally positive.
I also think it's a great format for you to... just have stories done you know. That's why I love the episodic format that also had a has a larger narrative going on in the background; even if the "main plot" isn't done yet, you've already done a bunch of satisfying short stories.

Yes. The webcomic I'm currently writing has had many changes because some movie did the exact same idea while I was still writing my own. Throwing this out there. What if, in the spirit of the holidays, we each, secret santa style, storytimed everybody's webcomic in their own threads on /co/, one at a time?

We'd need to have way to organize it, a way for authors to opt-out, and maybe some title, OP message so people could follow along and know what we're doing.

The super-long comics might just have to be only enough pages to fill a thread.
>>
>>77821250
Yeah, I like that idea.

Or like, the most recent chapter.

Yo. Dunno if you guys remember me, posted a few threads ago.

Short Update: I'm mostly writing at the moment*, so I didn't work a lot on the character and enviromental designs. (Plus I was spending my drawing time on practising stuff, since I'm still very insecure about my art)

ANYWAY so I'm currently trying to work out color schemes. To be quite honest, I really like the first palette and see no reason to change it. Can /hyw/ give me some input? How can I improve the colors/ and has anyone a basic and for amateur artist understandable guide for colors? (Color theory?)

*Good news though: It's goin' quite well so far! Worldbuilding is solid, basic outline stands and I'm currently rewriting the script of the first two chapters.

It's not like they decided to stick everyone in burkas or change the game from fighting to giving compliments and fighting against the patriarchy. There are still panty shots in the game and most of the girls are still wearing fanservicey outfits.

Me and my friend are trying to start a webcomic together. He does almost all the writing, dialog you know, smart people stuff. I am the 'artist' and character designer. I love doing it. We have all the characters planed out and drawn, problem is, I'm really, REALLY bad at comics. Drawing a picture, fine, drawing the same characters over and over in different positions is my downfall. When i do it, i start to get messy and half-heartedly draw the rest half way through. On top of that I'm not to confident art style. Does anyone have ANY suggestions on how I could make this easier on myself?

Depends on what kind of comic. If it's a generic opinion and joke comic where there's no motion other than different expressions and body language, you can just use the previous panel, retrace what you need and modify it for new expressions/poses. If it's an action comic with a lot of different camera angles then consistency isn't as important as it just isn't noticeable except to autists who nitpick. Do you have reference models drawn out?
>>
>>77830173
Just make it, faggot, people will say your comic is tumblr/reddit/etc regardless since it's a fucking webcomic. You need to deal with that fact.

Its a little action-y, I guess. But I think the action would be a lot easier for me since its very different poses and movements each time. But the whole thing isn't action, and thats the problem. Ive started to draw out the base of each characters body and plan on putting hair, clothes, expressions on after i know where each character is going on the page. But is that the 'right' way to do it?

it aint easy, but try doing it in the sketch phase. make the little tweaks as you go
and if you ever go 'dammit i love how this hair looks but it's inconsistent with the rest' then just copy it, save it, keep it in your computer's pocket with the lint.. that way you'll be able to bring yourself to ruin your drawing by fixing it for consistency.

>>
>>77832121
Yes it is a ton of work but

>redoing anything is fucking reprehensible

I kinda find it funny that you're saying this in a thread about webcomics but that's neither here nor there

They wanted to fix it because it was 3 year old animations that they wanted to update to meet their newly heightened standards and design choices. From an artist's perspective, if you have the means to go back and improve upon a work you did, then why not?

If they have the freedom to make that decision, the fact that they can actually make that decision and go through with it: that an artist can get the opportunity to improve upon a past work...I think that's more of a good thing than a bad thing.

It's not as if it was a major change (20 frames. just 20), and they simply didn't get around to it before now
(And by now, I mean APRIL, because that's when it actually happened and nobody noticed from then until it was announced.)

It didn't lead to a grossly different product, it didn't take back any promises the product made because there's still fighting and fanservice aplenty

And it certainly wasn't due to buckling to anyone elses standards but their own (because if they REALLY buckled to SJWs they'd just delete the game altogether)

I just don't see how this is a major problem.
>>
>>77832121
>but in general nothing, once published, should EVER be changed

>>
>>77832726
those comparisons (which, as i pointed out, did not remove the panty shot, just covered some of her bum) didn't look like anything had been 'redone' to me in terms of quality.

all i'm saying is there are a ton of people who are pressuring other people to do shit, and, while I hate those people, I'm not so naive that I think I can just sit back and let it happen. I need to combat it at every possible turn, so that when it fails I know I tried at least
>>
>>77832864
a fix doesn't count as a change
if you get into an accident, you can rebuild the face you were born with. You don't start making elective edits to that face when there's nothing wrong with you (or if it would be hiding something wrong with you. it's intrinsically dishonest to get a nose job if you have big nose genes)

Which is why we hate it when something is fixed that aint broken, as it were. Yeah it sounds like the reaction here is overblown, but the reactions to retcons in general, especially ones motivated by, as they said, "evolving past things", are absolutely valid and the only correct way to feel. Shouldn't treat something like a mistake when it wasn't.

I'm not saying it automatically is edgy, just that I infer edginess from it, much moreso than the other anon who was just trying to ask what it would be like for teenagers to have superpowers in a real setting

And now that I've said it out loud, I feel kinda bad for inferring that. I have no idea what your motivations are.
perhaps I'm just a bit gunshy from Frozen is all, but I'm beginning to take that sort of thing as an insult on men in general. it's hard enough getting women to give men a chance without that kinda Lifetime shit fucking them up worse
the message of 'don't let a handsome guy trick you with his looks' is pretty much bollocks since A) if it CAN work, then it will work regardless of how much mistrust you cram them with, and B) women's tastes in looks are fucked up so us classically-handsome guys are losing out to uggles constantly because they seem safer. I mean I'm more Beast than Hans but the point still stands. The anti-looks message has been delivered and then some.
it may just be the bitter old virgin in me but I want my goddamn princess dammit, don't start teaching girls to stop pining for a prince to save her, that's all we have to offer. GO into his damn castle. Give his 'threatening' ass a chance, he might be nice. And if he turns out to be a psycho, the rest of us will find him and teach him a lesson about teaching women the wrong lesson.
