Agreed. Die young wasn't bad because she actually made something fairly long and entertaining, but the animations didn't feel fluid throughout most of it. Lots of movements were too fast or choppy. I commend her for creating something though since I don't have anything to show for myself, but I'm not sure why it exploded the way it did besides bright colors and anthropomorphic animals.

Her animation and drawing in general is really, really shit. Her "style" is nothing but a super-condensed mishmash of the most common sparkledog furshit you'd find on deviantart.

The "rules" are there to give people a rough guideline on how to draw stuff that's consistently good, but it's not a 100% perfect.

It's like ingredients in a recipe. Yes, there is the recipe, and adding stuff that's not in it can ruin it, but sometimes adding more sugar/salt, or pork belly, or cilantro, or fish sauce- even though the recipe didn't ask for it- can result in a good dish.

I'm surprisingly okay with this.

Everything she draws is just floating around. One of the very first BASIC lessons of drawing anything is that there needs to be some weight to it to make your creation believable. It doesn't mean a character needs to look realistic, but even if you have a forty-foot tall pink rhino-bird, you need to give it some weight, otherwise no matter how much sparkle and cutesy color you pour on it, it will be no different from a kindergartener's stick figure.

I don't think this girl has any idea what she's really doing, as is also evident by the general shapes of the characters being so inconsistent it's hard to look at. It's like a little kid who has gotten really, really into her OC and now refuse to do things differently by referring to artistic mistakes as "my style". Fix the character's limbs (and especially feet) for a start, you can't just cover up sharp angles in soft curves and decide that anatomy is something that only happens to other people.

While the eyes/light things are legitimate to complain about, spider-chick's pose isn't really a problem unless she's supposed to hold it. If it's a temporary thing, she could be rocking back on her heels while also bending her torso forwards and bringing her shoulders back. It feels unnatural, but try it.

The 'hair/ear/whatever' thing could be antennae, I'd be more concerned with the mouth than the eyeball but both are legitimate complaints if you're striving for realism. The eyebrow's fucked though, unless it's a muscled hair.

I think the light source issue is that they were drawn separately and then compiled onto the same page, but I can't verify that at all.

Really, it seems like she loves caricature, where it's more about the momentary vibe you get than the ability to stand under scrutiny. I like her style because it's fun and fluid, but there is room for improvement.

Okay, so the animation is choppy, but it's a single-person effort.

Pretty sure the gap she places her head in isn't one her head can actually fit in; it looks like her head just gets morphed into a weird sort of thing to animate it slipping in and out.

Viv has a pathological fear of drawing legs. There are two multiple-second lengths where Jiji's(the blue wolf) legs are not drawn when they should be. She even animates another animal going into the area Jiji's legs should occupy, but during no point in her animation did she think maybe she should draw the legs, even if they aren't moving. You do notice it; it isn't a single-frame slipup.

Not a bad thing, but the posterior view of Jiji dancing away from the viewer seems oddly animated, like it had a reference the rest of the animation didn't.

I think Viv is good but she's definitely at a point where you know she can get better. Her designs can be hard to read because of the colors and because the faces are SO stylized you lose track of where everything is. I think it could be remedied with more balanced color schemes (more contrast I think, just eyeing it I think her color values are very very similar) and variable line width (probably not possible in student animations but doable for her comic). Maybe stronger shadows would help? It would be interesting for her to release roughs, other people's approaches to linework and color could demonstrate different ways of remedying her weak points without altering her style too much.

I'd like to see her doing the key frames on an animation using other people's designs.

It could be that you're surrounded by like-minded peers that might not be interested in actually challenging you. There seems to be a big push right now on style (the Adventure Time-esque "noodle arm" thing that's big right now) over the basics.

Having a style isn't wrong, certainly, but you need a mastery of art basics, especially anatomy, to know what you're doing. Picasso and Dali weren't just making random shapes and hoping the shit stuck to the wall. If you don't have the fundamentals down, you get stuck making the same basic mistakes, and these amplify over time as any criticism is dismissed as just not getting it. It's a feedback loop of shit.

I didn't go to a top-tier animation school, but I did interview for a pretty big art school in my city and there are a few art stores around with artists that did go to one major art school here.

One thing I've noticed is at the beginning they really didn't care about your art skill. My portfolio was a notebook filled with doodles from high school and a few comics I did in college. They said "As long as we can make the outline of a human face and body, you're fine." They saw one drawing I did from an anime draw book and they said "well, we can you have a firm grasp on the human head."

I would look at the art the art students in art stores made and It all looked like my shit from high school. It was very basic stuff and most of it was animanga style portraits of themselves. Even I managed to get a little better at drawing self portraits to stop drawing myself as a fucking Scott Pilgrim clone.

I did not catch the hype wave for that comic but I recall reading it and thinking the artist did try to do some neat things with the panel shapes. Still hate how the second 'h' on the name was dropped though. 'Hanna' looks so weird compared to 'Hannah'.
