Do American schools really do these Valentine's Day things on any official capacity? That just seems ridiculously cruel on the kids.

>As adorable as little kid Dipper and Mabel are, why exactly did Dipper just happen to have a razor on him? And couldn’t he have just lent Mabel his hat to cover up the gum? (The answer, at least for the second question, is that Dipper is pretty committed to hiding that birthmark of his. The answer to the first question is probably just to be quiet and let the cuteness wash over me. I’m all right with that, at least this once.)

Actually, if Dipper offered his hat to Mabel and showed his birthmark that moment would've been surprisingly poignant.

How much better would this episode have been if the bubble was subtle, making the characters unsure of what was reality and what was fiction? If the conflict was about not wanting to grow up and let go instead of a tacky, obviously fake playpen that would get old real quick? If Mabel had to choose to "grow up" and leave/destroy the bubble herself, rather than having Dipper do all the work again?

Imagine an episode where the bubble is Mabel's endless summer, and the Dipper is pretty much the same as our Dipper, except he doesn't want to stay with Ford. Imagine if Mabel had to tear her dream Dipper and her happiness apart with her own two hands, knowing that she might be saying goodbye to Dipper, if not now, than someday as they grow up and inevitably have their own lives.

Imagine that episode.

>>
>>77691826

So let's look at the options:

-Infinity die and all the other stuff in the Shack, copy machine, basement stuff etc.
-Ford at the Fearamid, but how will they get there?
-McGucket and his junkyard tech
-Gideon, possibly captured
-Gnomes, Manotaurs, Multi-bear alliance
-Blendin
>>
Guts got off the boat.
>>
>>77692196

See, if the humor had been great in this episode, I wouldn't complain, but it really wasn't a very funny/fun episode either. The bubble was just happy talking animals and not very creative.

>>77692233

It's all been done before already, but from a characterization viewpoint, it would have been better. Remember when Mabel realizes Blendin is Bill right before he knocks her out? She's horrified. But when they run into her here, there's no guilt, she's not upset at all, it's just "reality is lame-o and in here there's peppy 80s music."

>>77692221

It could seem to the characters that Weirdmageddon was a dream or a hallucination.

Actually, I just realized the episode would have been much better even if everything stayed the same, but they explored Mabel's feelings more. If she and Dipper had a moment, like, "Even if we stop Bill, if we go out there, eventually we'll grow apart like Stan and Ford. But here, we can be Mystery Twins forever."

Instead the conflict wasn't about growing apart like they hinted in AToTS or growing up vs. not growing up. Ir's "it's better to have silly talking animals than boring reality" and there's no weight to anything that happens in the episode.

>it's also something boring and lame. Why even have the characters enter a fantasy world if it's not gonna have any effect on them. Wendy and Soos where back with so much as a word

Exactly. None of the characters has to grow at all and they aren't explored. Even if it's cliche, it would have been a great opportunity for characterization to have at least some conflict and struggle there.

Having them all know right away it's not real and waltz out of there made the entire bubble plot seem like a pointless diversion, you could cut it without effecting anything. Notice that Mabel and Dipper didn't even talk about the Ford apprentice ship in the bubble. Instead, once they got out, she just said she was ok with it and Dipper immediately abandoned the idea. The fact that Mabel was ok with replacing Dipper with someone who was nothing like him also cheapened the concern with that situation in the first place. It seemed like Mabel's real problem with Dipper is that he isn't "radical and totally awesome" enough, not that he was leaving. If they'd had fantasy Dipper talk about how he would never leave her, that would have actually addressed the issue, but it didn't.

Dubs of truth.
>>
My production theory:

>Alex plans for three seasons
>Completes S1 as intended while fleshing out S2
>Incomplete outline for S3
>S1 production takes a toll on his soul
>decides to compress S2 and S3 into one season, as well as finish the series off entirely with a movie
>manages to squish S2 down to eleven episodes, becoming the first half of S2

But assuming that Alex never had a fleshed-out S3, which he likely would have done during the production of S2, he could only more or less use his basic outline of events. Furthermore, the movie was never given the go-ahead, so Alex was forced to incorporate it into the series itself by means of a multi-part series finale.

So that's twenty episodes of Seasons 2 and 3 each (40 episodes total) compressed into ten or eleven episodes each, minus three or four episodes in Season 3 to make way for the movie.

Or something like that. But what I'm trying to get at is that if the latter half of Season Two feels underwhelming, it's entirely possible that it's because of the compression of a story that wasn't even entirely there.

Im disappointed that it's once again Dipper making a sacrifice for Mabel

He gave up his dream apprenticeship way to easily. He went from being happy as a clam and excited for it to, "I don't want to be a weirdo like Ford" in the amount of time it took me to right that sentence. It just comes off as another sacrifice so Mabel can get what she wants.

Better idea.

Yes we're growing apart but Im always going to be your twin. That will never change no matter where in the world we are. Stan and Ford grew apart because they refused to talk, but if you ever need anything, ANYTHING Im only a phone call away and I promise Ill be there when you need me"

No he wasn't. Look at his body language when Ford suggests it. He's really unsure, and only agrees when Ford just flatters him unceasingly about how he's special. It's Ford's dream, not Dipper's. Once he actually takes stock, he rejects it, even when Mabel gives him the all clear.

>>
>>77692825

Basically. I don't hate Alex at all but I think he and possibly others working on the show just wanted to get it over with. So they rushed and slapped together the last, compressed season.

Life happens, it's a business, there are practical constraints, I understand.

I just feel sad that we could have gotten much better payoffs from the character arcs, plot, and mysteries if it hadn't been squished and rushed.

NWHS, NMM, DaMvtF, and a few other episodes really show what the series could do and was capable of. Some of this was great television. And now, the resolution the series has been building towards the whole time is underwhelming, that tends to leave a sour taste about what came before.
>>
>>77692957

Dipper by nature is someone who's often unsure of himself. That's his thing. He's an unconfident little nerd he was always gonna be hesitant for anything at first. But then he saved ford from an alien probe action hero style and realized he was destined for greatness after all.

What's more the way it's presented is him giving it up for Mable.

Body language says a lot.

Dipper never really wanted to Ford's apprentice, at least not for long. He was excited at first, until he realized he wouldn't have Mabel, and quickly grew uncomfortable as Ford started projecting his own issues with Stan (isn't it suffocating?) onto his and Mabel's relationship. Ford thought people like Stan and Mabel only held "special people" like him and Dipper back. Dipper only said yes because he didn't want to upset Ford, but he was already reconsidering it by the end of the episode.

Ford pressured and manipulated Dipper into agreeing to be the successor of his "legacy", but that would mean growing up without mutual support from Mabel. Being his apprentice was never Dipper's dream, it was Ford's.

And while my guys play cardboard monsters, Xanthar and Pyronica drop the realm payments and 8Ball's weirdness training money on the statue game slots. In the old days, townfolks knew your name, who you killed, what you ate. Today, it's like checking into reality. And if you order mass slavery, you're lucky if you get it by Thursday. Today, it's all gone. You get an abomination show up with four million in a suitcase, and some twelve-year-old school kid is gonna want his multiverse number. After the teamsters got knocked out of the box, the mystery twins tore down practically every one of the old madness bubles. And where did the money come from to rebuild the fearamids? For a fair number of people, this episode killed a lot of hype.

It did for me. I was super hyped, but now I tend to imagine the finale will also feel like an incredibly low stakes episode with shallow characterization. I also doubt any of the mysteries will amount to anything or be resolved.

I'm expecting Bill to get defeated in a very asspull, lame way, partially because Bill is retarded, not because any of the other characters are clever and heroic. I expect the Stan and Ford wrap up to get 30 seconds tops. I expect the episode will waste time on Wendip yet again.

Seriously, what sort of "great things" does Ford expect to help Dipper achieve? A life of running around the back-ass-woods of Oregon chasing boogeymen isn't exactly the same as the free scholarship to a prestigious university Ford was offered as a youth.

Ford just seems to be putting way too much false importance in himself and his "work".

Yeah, Dippy Fresh was something that really needed expanding upon. Like, the very thought of Mabel creating a "more-agreeable" version of her brother is a bit disturbing, not to mention the other people she created such as the teenagers, Soos' father, and another Wendy.

But there's also the notion that the world of Mabeland itself created those people, as evidenced by Mabel's line about how some things are created before you even know you want it, and Bill and Dipper's remarks about how the entire bubble is nothing but a trap.
I'd suggest that in the writing process, it was agreed that Mabeland would be its own living entity, not one of sight or of sound but of mind. But in the actual final script, that idea failed to come out fully. We got tastes of it, like the breakdown of Mabeland after the trial, but no concrete evidence that Mabel was never fully in control and that everything was naught but a distraction, presumably to keep her occupied while Bill wreaked havoc outside, and eventually to unceremoniously take her new world away from her and throw her to Gideon after everything was done.

Or something along those lines.

Didn't everyone always have fantasies of your parents being unreasonably nice to you, especially after you went through a row? The second half would likely be in the pyramid (fear-amid?) and concern finally taking down Bill.

Possibly explained via unicorn hair, though if Bill opts to unfreeze Ford, he may also have an explanation.

Proving that there are both aliens AND other realities in existence and that one has visited us and the other we can visit? That's some next level shit.

Can you imagine the problems it would solve if we could tap into 'dead' universes and harvest materials from them? Energy; metal, water, anything we want from a source that no one has any claim over, combined with the remains of a UFO, complete with intergalactic engine?

If Ford had succeeded in what he'd been planning, he would have made perpetual energy look like scrubwork, he would have been the God-Emperor of Mankind.

That's what he says to Ford, yeah. Dipper knew mentioning Mabel more wouldn't lead anywhere, since Ford quickly tried to "shut down" his argument by telling him that Mabel's holding him back, she has "personality" so she'll be fine, etc. But by the end of the episode Dipper's still concerned about her and reconsidering his decision, but again Ford shifts the focus to the mission and how Dipper can handle it.

I honestly wouldn't describe Dipper's romantic aspirations as an important plot detail, but I will agree that it's something that at this point does need a conclusion, given that Dipper still pines for Wendy to some degree.

"Into The Bunker" was the resolution.
Why they brought it back for "Roadside Attraction" I'll never know.

Hell, they could have at least had some set-up to that in "The Love God" by getting Dipper to accidentally drink Some Kind of Love Potion. Then we'd at least have an origin point.

The only other explanation is that "Roadside Attraction" was meant to come earlier in the series.

You've got to take into account that they have to simplify it for all the people watching who've never played it before, too.

Not everything can be 100% accurate anon.
>>
>>77693673

I thought the idea Mabel would have a replacement Dipper in her bubble made perfect sense. I think it's pretty common for kids to selfishly want the people around them to behave differently. I remember wishing I could wake up one day and find my siblings were suddenly nicer to me. Maybe that was because we fought more than the average family, but I recall having those thoughts often. The ethical ramifications of magically forcing those people to change tend to go over your average kid's head.

And besides, she'd been in that bubble for four days. Considering all this was brought on by a fear of her brother leaving her, it would be stranger if there wasn't a DoppelDipper in a world where she has everything she wants.

I did find Dippy Fresh disappointing for other reasons, though. >>77692715 summed up my thoughts on that pretty well.

>I'd imagine it must be even more common if you were a girl.

>People honestly thinking Dipper is a nicer person than Mabel

Yeah, Mabel certainly has flaws, but the only reason people side with Dipper is how he's portrayed as an underdog all the time. He's not really a nice person:

>Summons "the best fighter in the world" to rough up a teenager
>Purposefully breaks up a relationship just so he can get her instead
>"Revenge is awesome."
>Autistically records every time he bests his sister at anything to remind her about it.
>Screws up a whole night where his sister and friends try to bail him out of being on the bad side of the Summerween monster to get to some party he would do nothing at.
>Was entirely willing to let the ghost out in NWM except that Mabel was there, abandoning everyone there to certain doom.
>Will only help Stan in Dreamscrapers if it can be shown that Stan loves him, and is perfectly willing to abandon him if otherwise.
>Is perfectly willing to let Pacifica die (As bad as Mabel has been, can you imagine her leaving someone to die?)

This is why Mabel has friends and Dipper does not. Mabel seeks to actively help people (Robbie) when everyone else has left them. Mabel inspires loyalty because she accepts her friends, while Dipper is cynical about everyone, and is consequently alone in his age group. That's why everyone shits on Mabel. Her flaws stand out in relation to her character, while Dipper's are just so constant they are accepted as character traits.

>Stan in Dreamscape
Don't pass Stan off as an Angel, Dipper had literally just misheard 'MAN, I THINK THE KID IS A FAGGOT', yeah he ain't perfect but anyone would be hurt.
>Can you imagine her leaving someone to die
Yeah.
All of Gravity Falls and the rest of the world when she got what she wanted.

Dipper might not have many friends but he tries to do mostly the best for those around him, constantly sacrifices for his sister, who doesn't do shit in return and works his ass off.
He's cynical about people who deserve cynicism, makes friends fairly well outside of his age bracket (Manotaurs, Multibear, most of Wendy friendy group, so on) and is happy to step back and let people have their space, while Mabel never lets anything go and always feels the need to insert herself into other peoples problems, even if it makes them worse.

Dipper has a passion for the world and wants to know more, he prepares for things, plans ahead and is mature for his age. He sacrifices for those he cares about and hell, even those he doesn't
He don't owe Gravity Falls as a whole shit but he's more than willing to face off with a transreality demon-prince for it
Mabel was willing to let the world burn so she could live in a Marshmallow Palace.

I don't really see why he wouldn't be happy with Ford.

He'd still be able to communicate with the townsfolk. He'd still be able to visit Mabel and have her come visit him.

He's more of an introvert anyway.

It really did just seem forced. Dipper was probably his happiest in the entire show when he got to act like a big nerd with Ford.
>>
>>77694868
SU also has Smiley, Fryman, and maybe Yellowtail.
>>
>>77693545
The absolute ideal but unlikely outcome would be "1 hour" meaning 3X22 minute episodes with the first two being dedicated to fixing Weirdmageddon and the last one being an epilogue where the twins say their goodbyes and leave town.
>>
>>77694788
I do like Ford, but I don't think he's the golden boy that some consider him to be. He has strength and flaws, like the other characters. You're quite right in that he's the smartest intellectually, but that doesn't cover common sense.
>>
>>77694847
>Dipper would not have been happy with Ford long-term at this time.
Only this episode introduced that and it came out f no where. Since Ford came back Dipper has just wanted to get closer to him and every time he has it is a good experience for him

And so what if he decides actually this isn't for me? Then he can fucking leave, Ford would be cool with that

I dont remember, but did he start the journals before he meet up with Bill?

The theme of this show is family. Going down Ford's path at the age of 12 would have led to a fracturing of their twin relationship. NO chance he'd be happy long-term, I'm surprised anyone thinks there's a chance.
>>

Oh I agree, he has the common sense of a Goldfish.
Who the fuck believes the Illuminati triangle about anything?
But everyone going FORD IS A CUNT, FUCK FORD are just kidding themselves that he isn't, on some level, right about the fact that Dipper gets treated like shit and that he deserves a lot more respect than he gets.

Look, can we all just agree that Dipper and Mabel both have their flaws and make mistakes sometimes (and that if they didn't the show would be really boring), but they're basically good kids?
>>
>>77694966

Or better yet, why does Ford not announce the UFO, or the portal?

My head-canon is that he's really bitter about the world, and just wants to record all these findings for himself, like it's his little secret. This further explains why it would be a bad idea for Dipper to go down that path.
>>
>>77694374
It could always be a red herring, like how the glasses were for the author

No it wouldn't. Ford and Stan grew apart because they didn't talk and where hit by tragedy before they could make up.

Mable and DIpper would part on good terms ideally and would still keep in touch

I say it'd be okay for Dipper to stay with Ford, but only if Dipper's parents knew exactly what they'd be doing, especially if it was dangerous. Because shitty parents or not, they deserve to know.
>>
>>77694996

That was my point. Even though I think Mabel is the nicer one, I still like Dipper more for my own reasons. I'm just sick of everyone talking about Mabel as if she's being vindictive, when she clearly isn't.

The only real villains in Gravity Falls are Cipher, Gideon, and growing up.
>>
>>77694997
Exactly. Him wanting to "better the world" is just him stroking his ego

I like Ford. I just wish he could be fleshed out more.
>>
>>77694971
>The theme of this show is family. Going down Ford's path
You mean Ford, his other Gruncle, part of his family, who lives with Stan, his other Gruncle, also part of his family

Stan and Ford were broken because one fucked the other over, that wouldn't happen this time around. Sooner or later they have to learn to live apart, that doesn't mean you stop caring

It was clear immediately that Stan and Ford were emulating their divide in Dipper and Mabel, although they were not consciously doing so.

Ford is a hermit that seems to consider humanity in general to have cooties. If you want to keep in touch with people, living with him is about the second worst thing you could do (with the first being jumping into the portal).
>>
>>77694971
Know what family involves?
Give and take, it doesn't just involve 'Well, I was born related to you, bend me over and take me gently'
Mabel gives nothing and takes everything.
And Ford is basically, as far as Dipper is concerned, that cool Uncle that he's really similar to who's got a lot of life experience and can give him advice.
That's family as well you know, why shouldn't Dipper want to grow as a person?

And no one is happy 'long-term'; but know what? Dipper would have been happier than he was right then and there, for a while at least, he could have learned more about himself by being with someone a touch similar to him that doesn't mock his tastes and denigrate his tastes?

And you do realize that if Mabel manned the fuck up then they could have parted on amiable terms, the reason Stan and Ford bailed on each other is because Ford literally thought that Stan fucked his life over, for entirely selfish reasons.
You know, exactly what Mabel is in fact doing in the series during this last arc? Maybe her real fear is that with someone around who understands him, Dipper will realize what a Cunt his sister is?

If the theme of the show is family, why isn't Mabel willing to make any sacrifices for Her family and accept that they are different people to an extent.
What kind of Faberge relationship does she have with Dipper, that it can't survive a few months apart?
>>
I don't understand why they had to take a story about uncovering the secrets of a mysterious town and turn it into yet another show where the entire world is at stake from total destruction. Even if Weirdmageddon was executed flawlessly, which it isn't, it wouldn't be anywhere near as compelling as NWHS and AToTS.
>>
>>77695057
You are right in a way you don't realise

>Stan breaks Ford's machine
>This messes up Ford's life
>Stan gets chucked out and is never heard of again

Compared to
>Dipper wants to stay
>Mabel breaks stuff
>Dipper no longer allowed to stay
>just accepts it
Mabel was the same as Stan but got the good ending
>>
>>77695057

Yeah there's a parallel but the difference is Mable and Dipper would see their mistakes and not repeat them

>>77695082

Ford's not gonna lock dipper up in a cage when he's not working. Why do you think he's not gonna let him use the phone or write letters?
>>
>>77695112
>the entire world is at stake from total destruction.
it's a metaphor for their little twin world
>>
I don't understand why people are saying that Dipper wouldn't be happy if we was Ford's apprentice. Especially if they're using Ford and Stan's past as an example.

>Stanford tells Stanley that he might be leaving to a good college and that they won't be able to spend time with each other as much
>Out of sadness, Stanley messes up the machine on accident

>Dipper tells Mabel that he might become Ford's apprentice and that they won't be able to spend time with each other as much
>Out of sadness, Mabel ruins the world on accident

There was nothing wrong with Ford wanting to go to a good college as there is nothing wrong with Dipper wanting to be Ford's apprentice.

Basically this

Stan had it seriously rough. He spent his whole life trying to fix his mistake in getting Ford through the portal (he actually taught himself to understand Ford's bullshit machinery despite being academically shit, just to do it), and in response when he finally does it he gets spat on and immediately told to get the fuck off.

Forty years, man. That's a fucking lot of time.

All the research is done in Gravity Falls, with Stan and everyone else there to look after him as well they'd make sure he gets a balance
