"I hate the art in this one, I couldn\'t even bring myself to shade the fucking thing but oh well whatever" -Jeph Jacques, writer and Illustrator
I'm done with this comic. I've been reading this strip every day since March of 2007. I've watched this comic meander on for the last few years, and I just, don't care anymore. This is the strip that's done it for me.
Later Questionable Content, thanks for all the music jokes that I took the time to understand, they were some really cool bands to discover.
Jeph I'm so disappointed in you. We know you can do better, or at least not at this level. You could have taken a break. Nobody here could have hated you any more. Does your Patreon prevent that? Jeph, do what's right for you. And tell us what you're listening to these days.
Really? This is the page that you give up on?
Anyways, see you tomorrow anon
>Really? This is the page that you give up on?
I can understand why.
This page shows just how little Jeph cares about his own craft better than anything else in the comic. If even he has no interest in this piece of shit why should the audience?
At least that Claire shit was trying to tell a story, even if the execution was as bad as it could possibly be.
I find that a lot of webcomic artists are vocal about "Well, I did this and I'm not happy with it", and they post it because eventually you settle for good over perfect.
The other options are the guys that never update because it's not perfect and the DA "No crits" guys that refuse to hear it isn't perfect.
True, but at the same time they dont make the kind of money Jeff makes to just make the comic.
Like, all he has to do literally all day is draw a comic. Others are probably freelancers with other jobs. Jeff just has to sit in front of a computer for a few hours draw out a little story, and not worry about other jobs that pay his bills to live.
This. by how it sounds, Jeff is well aware his webcomic is the Junk food of the Internet (Not good, yet people consumes it daily out of habit.) but rather than improve he just gave up with himself and just goes with the motions. Not trying to do anything fancy or new.
If I, for some ridiculous reason, were contributing to his patreon, this unbelievably shameless lack of dedication would be the thing that made me stop.
How the hell does he expect people to support his work if he demonstrates and even admits not putting effort into it?
That one felt more like He was trying to convince himself "I have this QC is not my entire life. I can do other comics I have drive!" only for it to fire since trying to convince yourself that you have spark is not the same as actually having it.
Meanwhile, Helmer is consistently producing 3-4 pages a week.
No filler, actual story, incomparably better quality artwork, but she's making a third of the money that this atrocious hack does.
I read the description.
I read it again.
His art has been slipping for the past month
I re-read the description
Nearly 3100 pages
What the fuck Jeph.
I think it's GOOD he's being self critical. He put it out anyway, but he does have a deadline. So now it's just a matter if he tries to up his game tomorrow or if he just does the same thing and complains again.
People always say that, but it's where it always is. It'd need to hit the lower end of 9k to really show any decline.
I'm happy that Jeph is seeing the decline in the quality of the art he put out (See literally any page with Bubbles in it) I'm disappointed that he saw it, got tired of trying to fix it, and just put it out there anyways.
can't have been to impress /co/, they'd have complained regarless
He should take a sabbatical, if that were feasible. Find a good stopping point, reread all the things that influenced him, read some new stuff, try a few new things out, come out with his batteries recharged.
But sadly he will not.
Who wants to take bets on when his next relapse will be?
you might not believe this, but some people actually do use big words in everyday life, even in inappropriate situations.
The problem is he has nowhere to go, the robot fight club arc is lame. He keeps adding new characters but it doesn't makeup for the complete lack of story. Have Hannelore get a BF, have her get sexually assaulted. Have Dora and Tai have a threesome with Sven. SOMETHING!
Your just the person who complains about getting bad service at a store, vowing never to shop in there again, telling everyone how poorly treated you got.....and then going back to said store 3 days later.
I thought his numerous trips to cons were his sabbaticals?
He should just make one con "Hey, i'm off for the week, visit me at FATNERDCHICKSCON to see me!" type of deal for a bit.
I think the thing is, Jeph actually hates Questionable Content. See, for years, drawing and posting a page of QC was the last thing he did before going to sleep. First, when he still had a day job, it was a thing he'd do for fun to help him unwind at the end of the day. Then when QC became popular, he quit his job and made the comic his main source of income.
But he's not an artist, and not a writer. He doesn't have any educational background in art, he never studied it, he just doodled for fun. And that's what QC was, him doodling for fun. And even when he didn't have a day job, when QC became his source of income, he would still wait until the last hour before he slept to make a comic. Go back and read some of his old tweets. He constantly complains about how tired he is but still has to come up with a comic. QC became his career, but he continued to treat it like a hobby.
I think somewhere down the line, I'm going to assume it was soon after the stab-hand incident, he realized that his approach to QC was bad for the comic and bad for him personally. He tried to take QC more seriously, moving Marten and Claire's relationship forward, (trying) to keep a buffer so he doesn't draw it late at night when he's tired, dedicating time to the book collections and so on.
And what's the result of Jeph taking Questionable Content seriously? >>77655603 And why? Because he doesn't care. That's why he started recording music and drawing Alice Grove. I think it won't be long before he's done with QC. It took years for Jeph to take Questionable Content seriously, and when he finally did, he discovered that he hated it.
>it won't be long before he's done with QC
But then how's he going to pay for the 10k a month lifestyle he's become accustomed to? I doubt that money hasn't been tied up somewhere. I suspect he has a house and big bills and shit he needs to keep up with. And if he can't even carry a simple story arc, I doubt he's good with savings or investments.
Also doesn't he have an ex wife? I wouldn't be surprised if he needs to pay her some kind of support after the divorce.
We all know this is heading for suicide. It's clear he has a lot of deep issues with himself and his life, despite the fact that it would only take a bit of effort to grow as a person.
Hes said he doesnt like doing QC that much, and Alice was his dream comic. Sadly both comics suck. Alice just sucks more because of QC.
And its Jeffs fault. Its entirely on him. He decided to make QC his job. He could have kept doing just merch and ad sales, but he decided to bring pateron into the equation for more money.
His fans are his boss now. Whether he likes it or not QC isnt up to him anymore. Pateron is basically like putting your company on a stock exchange. You gotta satisfy your investors. His fans are his investors, literally. Jeff can't even do his job. He complains about everything and does shitty work. If this was a "real" job, he would be shitcanned and replaced.
Jeff is living the dream and realized his dream sucks. He could quit anytime but he cant. He had no real skills. He went to college for music theory if I remember right. The best he could be is a elementary music teacher, if hes lucky. His music isn't good I might add. All he does is mix shit on garage band.
Holy fuck, I just remembered he kickstarted an album a year or two ago. Rented a studio and had it properly mixed.
Jeff is just really really fucking lucky. He fell into niche and became successful. How does he repay his audience? By being even more mediocre than he started out. Hes too far in to quit everything now.
Missed comics I could forgive if I gave him money. Inconsistent art quality I could forgive, because it never had it to begin with. But it's that "oh well whatever" that is just a real fuck you to anyone that ever accepted his comic for the little daily time-waster it is.
You're making 10k a month to draw a comic you fucking child, have the goddamn decency to knock of this exasperated teenager act sometime before you hit 40.
Jesus christ I thought I was back in '02 reading a fucking livejournal post.
There's nothing sadder than a faggot in denial.
>but oh well whatever
This should not be the attitude of a man who is paid solely by his fans.
If I were paying this guy and he said shit like this, I'd withdraw my donations.
>not fucking a dyke while your sister grinds her cooch on the chick's face
>not using it as an opportunity to figure out what the two of you are going to get your mom for her birthday
>QC is so bad even the characters are stabbing themselves
Jeph is at the point where the people paying him aren't going to stop, and even if some do, he'll be virtually unaffected.
He's managed to amass an absolutely cancerous fanbase than will never leave him, or give him peace.
This is the monkey's paw, the hell he's built for himself.
You mean SJW "muh cultural appropriation!" Der-shing Helmer? Yeah, I really can't say I feel bad for her not breaking bank with her Patreon, especially since the Meek has gone down so much in quality since she came back from her 3-year hiatus..
I actually quite like the art in this one, compared to normal anyway.
Oh, don't get me wrong, the backgrounds are still dreadful and something about Hanners in the first and third panels makes it look like she was photoshopped in, but Penelope/Cosette are legitimately well drawn and I like the linework on Sven + his facial expressions.
Its better than his normal output for sure.
Theoretically, let's say the patreon people all withdraw their money tomorrow, upset at this affront to effort. He still has adverts and merchandise sales. He'll still be like, okay, right?
With 10,000 a month he's rather well off, but can we make any reasonable conjectures as far as what he makes off ad revenue and merch sales? He'd still be pretty comfortable, right?
He was making six figures annually years before Patreon came along, even assuming its a 50/50 split with his wife for running the business side of things he'd still probably be getting 50-60k a year from merch and ads alone - possibly more, depending on how much the site has grown since then.
>why WOULD a spatula even BE sharp
Don't know about "sharp" but metal spatulas with fine edges are useful for sliding under objects. The cheap plastic ones just push things around. I can see how someone could be careless with a fine spatula, but cutting one's wrist with it? That's a stretch.
Does he still redraw the comics for the print editions? I thought he would have stopped after the first 750-1000 or so, or whenever the point is where his style starts to stabilize.
Here's another lazy comic from long ago that Jeph was eventually going to color but never did.
He makes money with this comic specifically because it updates every weekday and it's been around forever. The comic taking an actual break would snap people out of the daily habit that he needs to make sure they maintain to keep his six figures a year rolling in.
This is why he should hire backfills. The comic's income is several times over what's needed to support this. Jeph is just a combination of greedy and lazy and would rather wallow than seek lifestyle optimizations.
>doesn't he have an ex wife?
This is the thing he used to climb.
I doubt it.
The people paying Jacques obviously don't, and haven't ever, cared about the quality of anything in the comic and won't.
They just want to see these dumbass characters bumble into and out of relationships. They want Jeph to pander to them using their favoritest waifu.
>You mean SJW "muh cultural appropriation!" Der-shing Helmer?
Wait, is this post serious? She sheemed like a pretty cool person back in the day, the only odd thing was that she straight out refused to reveal wether she was male or female, I don't remember anything particularly SJW about them.
What do they even talk about on the forum since they have so many banable offenses?
criticizing the comic or Jeph is banable
Shipping is banable
Disagreeing with the mods is banable
Saying anything moderately offensive is banable
Don't they grill all new forum posters for excuses to ban them?
They fellate Jacques and praise each new comic and storyline as if they were a series of successive masterworks.
Despite this, Jeph is still stressed out by their comments, and the Reddit page is toxic to him, despite having a net positive opinion of him.
>that Jeph was eventually going to color but never did.
>"If I have time I may put up a colored version, we'll see"
That sounds like a "I never intended to color this and you can't even say I committed to doing so" to me.
I get the feeling that Jeph is the type to think that hiring people to do that would violate his integrity, and is somehow worse than just shitting out whatever he thinks up in the last hour of the day.
>criticizing the comic or its author is bannable
>Questionable Content confirmed for literally worse than Dominic Deegan
Mookie was a hack and a terrible author, but I'm starting to realize how rare a phenomenon it was that he freely let his official forums tear the comic apart (more and more frequently, as it got worse and worse).
>What do they even talk about on the forum since they have so many banable offenses?
Basically what >>77667992 said:
>They fellate Jacques and praise each new comic and storyline as if they were a series of successive masterworks.
"Jeph is a master story teller!"
"[Character X] is sooooo cute! *huggles!!!*"
>Don't they grill all new forum posters for excuses to ban them?
Yeah, they're constantly assuming bad faith of new posters and jump the gun with their suspicions. If the mods catch a new commenter who didn't go didn't grind exp in the new poster forum they'll post a passive aggressive "WELCOME NEW PERSON" reply to whatever thread it is.
>Jeph is still stressed out by their comments
The harshest thing posted there is along the lines of, "I wonder if Jeph considered..." Not even a criticism as much as a request for more information.
>Reddit page is toxic to him, despite having a net positive opinion of him.
With the vast majority of tame criticisms downvoted to something like -25 even though the top comment might be as low as +5.
Don't forget saying even neutral comments on anything relating to transgender or sexuality identity. Something as tame as "I don't understand the phenomenon" gets called out for triggering and microaggression.
Okay fellas. I'm gonna do it. I’m gonna attempt to read this entire thing. I'd always seen these generals on /co/, but I didn't truly become aware of the comic until the "This is me" page cause a shitstorm.
Just the other day, a friend recommended the comic to me after I recommended ‘It Hurts’ to her. She states: “It’s a really well written comic, with great relatable characters”.
I’ll trudge my way through it best I can, however, I would like to do my best monitoring Jeph Jacques’ descent into madness alongside reading the comic. Can you kind gentlemen please help me out in this regard? Any compilations of his various insane exploits available?
I've been telling myself this since Marten and Dora broke up. That was the end of the Good Times. I suppose I keep coming back in the vain hope that somehow it will return to the heyday when Marten beaned a Kung Fu monk with souffle pan.
Off the top of my head, the most relevant events are:
1. Committing to QC as a career (linked in this thread)
2. Handstab 1.0
3. Handstab 2.0 (Marifat & the tranny)
5. W-well, this is me
There are various drinking and drug related episodes mixed in there but they're probably still mentioned or hinted at in the daily updates.
Well said. He's in a Hell of his own making. Worse, it's a Hell he asked for.
Yeah, the end of Marten & Dora was the beginning of the end of this thing. It wasn't even that the comic hinged on the pairing. In fact, it was almost a background plot. For whatever reason, after the breakup, the comic got progressively more detached and disjointed. Whatever "heart" it once had was sucked out.
With every new attempted plotline or new character you can almost see Jeph trying to convince himself, "This is the one. This is what will bring back the fire. This is the new Hannelore or Marigold. This is the new arc that'll carry for years." A few days later and the "passion arc" is treated the same as all the "maintenance arcs", all 20 of them.
The forums and Reddit think the ear thing is a big deal, but I'm on the fence about that. I think it's something corporeal that Jeph can transfer his extant Demons onto.
He's mentioned the ear thing several times over the years.
My take on it, Marten and Dora were the relatively sane couple that everyone else revolved around. They WERE the heart of the comic, at least together. With all the crazy antics that went on around them, Marten and Dora were grounded and seemed stable.
Despite Jeph's assertion that "this has been coming for a long time", the break up came out of nowhere.
And, as you say, it cut the heart out of the comic. The Marten Claire pairing was an attempt to reestablish a stable relationship for Marten, but the whole trans thing aside, it's too little, too late.
>"this has been coming for a long time", the break up came out of nowhere.
Yeah, the precursor was Dora's insecurity issues over the nature of the relationship, but it still came out of nowhere. They had been together for a while and suddenly she brings up concerns that you'd expect to hear much earlier in the relationship.
Dora says something to the effect that Marten was too wishy-washy and a pushover. While that's true, in context of when things were going south, Marten was actually assertive and vocalizing about Dora crossing boundaries. He was actually passing the shit tests at the time.
It'd be fine if Dora was rationalizing and the real reason explained later, but it doesn't come off that way. Dora is obviously deranged but the comic treats her as a saint.
The situation is quite similar to Marten and Claire. They had a long established relationship of coworkers with very little in the way of suggested mutual attraction and then one day Marten's personally changes entirely and suddenly the two are crazy about each other. As slow as this thing moves you'd expect 6-12 months of slow burn, not a weekend turnaround.
yeah he completely ruined both of their characters when he decided there had to be drama when there was none, just so he could mix shit up and bring in the tranny
>recommend "It Hurts!!", the greatest work of our generation
>get recommended QC back
Your friend is shit and you should educate her on quality webcomics
I recommend, in no particular order:
Dr. McNinja (ending soon!)
Gone With The Blastwave (deader than disco)
Bad Machinery (if you aren't already reading this you should leave)
Social Justice Weeaboo
Calling Jeph a weeaboo is a bit of a stretch.
He's seen Azumanga Daioh and that's about it
Pretty sure he watches and enjoys all kinds of moeshit. That should be more than enough to get him lynched by the SJWs for being a "pedo neckbeard". Yet this doesn't happen. Why?
This should be obvious. It's an identity politics cult. The most racist sexist shit I've read in recent memory was from supposed SJWs. What was it Chu said "No bad tactics just bad targets" ?
I can't remember if he referred to the condition by name but he's talked about having bad hearing due to blockage for years and I think he referenced a previous draining at some point.
I'm good friends with a short dude (he's between 5'11" and 5'8") and he's dating a chick who's taller than me (between 6' and 6'1")
I keep hitting on his girl, one of these days he's going to try to kill me
You're wrong either because you mean "modern" as a short span of years and that's objectively incorrect or you're wrong because you mean it as a long span of years and it is therefore not a meme word.
Handstab's other comic also features a bloody left hand.
>It wasn't even that the comic hinged on the pairing. In fact, it was almost a background plot.
If only Jeff could do that now.
>She sheemed like a pretty cool person back in the day
Naw she was always an ass, she acts nice and cute when you're licking her cunt, but dare to give actual criticism, or god forbit, ask what the hell happened to the update schedule (back in the day)? Jesus fuck she goes into passive-aggressive mode filled with insufferable smugness.
Don't htinki of it as a hyphen, think of it as a tilde to indicate a stretched syllable, like in my indonesian wood cuttings - CLIN~TON! CLINNNNNNNN~TON!
I think in that case it was a matter of Jeph Jacques fans having a go at John Allison for this comic:
So doing a guest comic was probably a way to get angry fans to stop clogging up allison's inbox.
Nah, look at the color pallette he uses: He'd probably just watched the part 2 anime, like the part skipping anime only SCUM that he is.
>A week later, Claire comes out as trans
There is no way those two aren't related.
I don't buy that he just decided to make Claire trans there, because she was introduced alongside two other minorities, but he clearly ousted her earlier than planned to make up some SJW points.
I haven't read it regularly in about 3 years, but the best way I could describe it as a hipster FRIENDS.
Kinda bland at times, but enough funny moments to keep me reading for a while. One of the biggest draws for me was that it updated every weekday during a time when I read tons of webcomics and most used to update 1 to 3 times a week at best.
Is that supposed to be Marten, Dora, or Jeph's insert? All three?
>So doing a guest comic was probably a way to get angry fans to stop clogging up allison's inbox.
But the guest comic came first.
>tons of webcomics and most used to update 1 to 3 times a week at best.
Or did that thing where the author got motivated and posted 3-5 per week for about 3 weeks and then took a six month hiatus. And this was a time when RSS and other syndication services were in their infancy so you had to constantly check.
Hey /qc/, want some fresh salt?
Not only that but Marten and Dora together linked everyone in the cast together and gave the comic a consistent setting in the form of the coffee shop. They were the tape holding all the various subplots together into a cohesive whole.
As soon as they broke off everything became a mess and the comic now jumps between a million different focal characters with little crossover between any of the subplots. We go months without seeing Dora, Sven, Tai, Steve or Marigold.
>QC became his career, but he continued to treat it like a hobby.
The irony is that before it was a job, he had a more complex method for drawing and coloring that he clearly doesn't use any more. He even posted a tutorial showing it step by step.
>has good art with fully rendered backgrounds and a potential epic story.
>Never misses updates, updates 3 times a week.
>consistently offers content on Patreon.
>Barely have any readers.
And then I see guys like him. I know he has been around since the dawn of webcomics, but when I see him moan and whine and turn out such bad comics while still getting tons of money, it just kills me. Doesn't make me want to try any less in making my webcomic known, but it is very discouraging.
We got sick of them. The only reason his threads blew up lately is because the storyline that was running will probably go down as Willis's crowning achievement of crap. It was along the same lines as watching loss.jpg for Buckley or Marten fucks Claire for Jaques or the end of Season One for Korra (arguably usurped by Korrasami) go down live. Now that it's over, Dumbing of Age is still just as terrible but also about a million times more boring so why on earth would anyone want to read or talk about it or Willis?
Yeah, QC was never a must-read or anything but it was cute. When Dora and Marten split it kind of fucked up the chemistry between everyone and nothing had a good flow anymore. Jeph keeps trying to find a way to restore that state of balance by introducing new characters and arcs but none of them stick and in the meantime he's forgotten the stuff that was working for him. He fucked himself over and once he realized this he panicked and made things even worse.
It sucks because you know someone with the necessary passion, talent, and emotional stability could turn it all around and you keep reading in the vain hope that that will happen even though it won't because Jeph doesn't have the will or the ability to fix his comic.
ain't that the truth. Been feeling bad about the art lately, so I simply need to step it up.
You know what sells in other forms of media?
Easily digested things that don't challenge the viewer.
You know what doesn't sell in other forms of media?
Passion projects that deviate from being easily digested things that don't challenge the viewer.
His comic and your comic fall in line with this concept. He doesn't have a passion project, he has something made to generate income.
Characters look odd and flat against such pretty backgrounds. Protagonist looks suspiciously like an Elsa knockoff. Pretty sure nobody reads flavor poems (at least I don't). Didn't hit much writing in the actual comic yet but if the website text is representative my expectations are low. Find a better editor. Preferably one more sensitive to comma errors and awkward phrasing.
Stylistically I find your comic hard to look at. You have this jarring juxtaposition of random photoshop texture brushes for the environments paired with flat coloring on the characters with some gradients on top of them. I can see it being a personal choice, and I respect that, but it creates an unfortunate side effect: every character looks complete detached from the world around them, because they just look like you took the style from one comic and pasted it atop another entirely different comic. You see this exact thing with the furry community's works, a lot of deviant art stuff, and other unpolished artists who learned photoshop through youtube tutorials rather than through a source of constant and consistent ground-up instruction.
>You have this jarring juxtaposition of random photoshop texture brushes for the environments paired with flat coloring on the characters with some gradients on top of them
I think it's supposed to look like a Disney or a Don Bluth movie where the characters are flat and backgrounds are painted, but it doesn't work here.
The characters look clumsy, like he's trying to draw them in an alien style.
Thank you for the critique, I agree with everything you said. I almost never get any feedback, and I wish someone had told me things like this earlier on. Lately I have been asking around though, and feedback has mostly been negative, so I have to try to find a way to get out of the terrible habits I posses right now.
My constant shilling is finally getting though, it only took 5 years for them to meet.
Wait. This was fight years ago. Goddamn nothing really ever happens in this comic doesn't it.
Render the characters in the way you render the environments and you'll solve the problem. If you feel like you've invested too much into the general style to do that, then fix the next most glaring issue: line weight. You need to become educated on the importance of (and techniques behind) using line weight to accent and embellish the characters. Panel to panel you use an identical line weight for the characters, to the point that there's not even a variation when characters are at different distances from the "viewer."
oh shit, you've got a link down on the bottom
My mozilla isn't picking that up, usually a little icon lights up and says "there's an RSS feed here, if you click on me I'll freeze your browser"
Hell, you know what? This is actually somewhat interesting. There's banter between characters that doesn't end with someone making a bad one liner wearing a smug shit eating grin *cough* Faye *cough*. Plus Sven is like the only character that manages to make stuff happen in this comic; him being here opens up Marigold to be doing stuff other than fucking Dale or being boring with Hanelore and maybe means that Jeph will remember that Dora exists again since she's apparently suffered the same fate as half the characters in QC and been completely abandoned. I'll take it.
Also I knew the level of effort had gone down but holy shit that's a major nosedive in the quality of the art since five years ago.
I kind of agree with a lot of the things said in this thread. Your characters aren't bad in themselve but the way you draw them (or color them) clashes to much with the environment and animals. Your forte is obviously the backgrounds, you should try to color your characters the same way just to see how it looks like.
Also, I'm not a fan of the way you arranged the panels in the bottom of this specific picture.
It's not that hard.
Grab Python, urllib & lxml to log into a textfile.
Consolidate daily gain/loss values.
Grabing 1 value per day could also be interesting enough.
Rolling Arithmetic Average of first discrete derivative (Differences between Days) should be interesting.
The denser Data collection, the better you would prevent "Lost Updates" (1 cancel at 100$ + 1 subscriber at 100$ between Data collection. (Patreon does no longer mention how many have chosen different perks.)
>2nd panel, bubbles are to be read in the wrong order
>I can spot 2 grammar mistakes and English isn't even my first language
>I don't even know what the guy in the last panel is trying to say
This is terrible.
>the blue robot is going to wind up fucking him.
Okay, after a quick look I have to ask: are square speech bubbles a scandinavian comic thing or something? I've only ever seen it in SSSS and this one and they weird me the hell out, especially when you make them really wide and narrow like the last one on the newest page.
Read through what you've done so far. It's good. It has my attention. I like the art and story so far and it's a helluva lot better than most of the money making comics out there.
Been reading Bad Machinery for years now and it feels like it's gone downhill during the current case. The one with the french girl was good though. Also, the weekend comics seem like they would be all right but the posting schedule ruins their pacing.
Jeff said these "cosplayers" are the closest interpretations of his characters.
So thats what Faye and Fat Nerd look like.
Its okay Anon. Just think about how hard Marten, who IRL would probably look like Jeff, wanted to bang >>77696508
Forgive my ignorance, I don't follow this comic, but all this talk of handstabbings sounds like drama. If no one's willing to summarize, is there anywhere I can read about it?
Him just being drunk one night and playing with a knife and stabbing his hand just for the hell of it.
Yeah, but in my mind there's a difference between hating your job and being mentally unstable enough to stab yourself in the hand when a fatty on the Internet calls you a shitlord and criticizes your writing.
The fatties made him drink. The alcohol and lifetime of emotional instability made him stab his hand.
But these are cries for attention, he has to know by know that you slice lengthwise along the wrists to do work.
He also has depression and mental issues. He used to talk about all the time under the comic. Always going on about what pills his doctor put him on or changed on him.
The guy is kind of sad really.
>Poor guy sounds like Tom Siddel without the talent, skill, or passion
Don't you compare this fat hack to Tom
> Momo has a built in tazer
> Anti-rape device
It's a strip involving May.
It is legit.
Yes i double-checked anyways, please forgive me for feeding the beast with another website view.
I wonder if this comic will dive deep into AI/Human relations in regard to picking a partner that you know will age and die as they sit frozen in time, unable to join their love in whatever mysterious place awaits us all...
Or if he'll make a few funnies, every character will consider the conflict resolved without any conflict and onwards the train will go.
Sadly she probably can't with that cheep government issue body she has. And I doubt she could afford the upgrades anytime soon with her minimum wage job.
Of course it's possible Sven could pay for it
May has the chassis of a short adult woman. I'm not sure but I think previously she's been drawn as taller than she has been lately. She's been in jail and behaves like an adult.
I could have sworn that in a previous comic it's stated that Momo has an adolescent type chassis. Also her personality tends to be written as youngish.
I don't know too much about the A.I. lore in the comic but I know Jeph has written extensively about it so maybe it's established that all A.I. are legally adult no matter how new they are.
But even if that's the case I promise that having an adult character have sex with a robot with the body of a tween is not going to go over well with a lot of people. Especially the people that caused him to stab his hand before.
There's a Rustle hentai that covers that, albeit with an immortal flesh and blood girl. You get to fap and cry at the same time.
This is probably right. The only reason to mention a robot with a secret identity would be if its from the main cast. It'll probably be the little apple robot if it's not pintsize.
>mfw all this AI drama is just buildup to when Pintsize gets a human chassis and runs amok
Oh man, Jeph's really good at drawing robots. All these ones look so lifeless and off-putting. They have that uncanny valley effect where they almost look like people but instead they look repulsive.
His years of practice really shine through.
But can that chassis still shoot eels out its cooch?
inb4 "FUCK THE ROBOT" becomes the new /qc/ mantra
No, the old chassis was only confirmed for being able to shoot eels out of its crotch like in my chinese woodcarvings.
Remember when all the characters were so much more well-rendered? I miss Hannelore looking like a real person.
She's got hands, tits and ass shaped silicone (hell, some real people have that) and a mouth, though that part could be like fucking a speaker with teeth. No idea what's really in there.
So yeah, I think she can find a way or two to service meatbags.
Momo has the body of a loli and according to the wiki she's 2.69 years old. That's realdoll enough for me. Too bad there are robot rights so you can't degrade and smack her around too much
, unless she's into that.
Hell, QC doesn't even take that much time per day to do.
If I could make 100g a year drawing 4 hours a day, I'd draw the full 8 because fuck it let's see where this ride goes.
There are legit skilled/educated artists that would kill for that job.
What I want to know is, how constantly asspained does a guy have to be to be mad at a tvtropes page?
It's not even four hours, it's like 20 minutes. Seriously. One time on Twitter he came back from a con and it went something like
>11:20 PM: Whew am I tired. Whelp gotta start working on the comic some time!
>11:40 PM: comic's up
Whatever it was didn't look any different from the stuff he shits out every day.
20 minutes and he can't make a buffer.
>Triggered by Reddit
>Any post criticizing him or his comic gets downvoted to -20

>Criticizing Jeph or his work is a bannable offense.
>Mods actually vet posters for worthiness.
>Still not hugbox enough for Jeph
His handling of May is impressive as she's one of the few characters that always has at least a semi-decent story/strip. I can't remember reading a comic featuring her and thinking "What the fuck is this shit".
And it's not a case of her being minimally featured, since her introduction was an entire story arc featuring very minor characters at the time.
>her introduction was an entire story arc featuring very minor characters at the time.
To the extent where May's very existence was a crutch to give Dale some character. Which failed. Eventually Jeph gave up and just stuck him with Marigold and then tried to convince his readers that this pairing was somehow obvious. After that both he and Marigold have been put on the bus.
>Because if this shit has a following and funding, how hard can it be
New webcomics have zero chance in hell at being as successful as jacques.
Jeacues fell ass backwards into his money by being in the right place at the right time. He put out something not absolutely terrible enough when that was enough to get followers.
Now there's hundreds of fairly competent webcomics on the internet that have to vie for relevancy.
If you try going to the guest strip comics, nearly all of them are dead links. If you look through archive.org you'll see spurts of motivation followed by long hiatuses and then eventually resignation. Jeph's main "skill" was posting something--anything--daily and never letting up from that.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with clang-clang.
>pintsize gets a female chassis
>it's better than any of the other AIs
>the buildup is to pintsize and sven fucking
>punchline and reveal delivered exactly as Sven climaxes
This dialog. So a crazed man is chasing with a rifle and the boyfriend is frantically yelling to run away and split up. Her only reaction during the whole thing? "Understood." Not "Oh my god! Oh my god!" or "Help! Someone help us!"
LOL, thanks for the explanation. Guess it makes more sense now. I'm assuming every character in the thing has some sort of brownie points checkbox trait, like "girl in wheelchair" or "black guy with lupus".
I disagree. For the longest time Dale was some comic relief character that got thrown in a few times a year, like Steve. He had the same status as other characters like Clinton or Penelope. Then, suddenly, there's a push to make him a main character and there was a concentrated effort to pair him up with Marigold that started with the introduction of May. Then, the moment the pairing happened, he got relegated back to occasional background character. The whole exercise seemed rather pointless. From what I remember even the forum, who are all for AnyCharacter X AnyCharacter, wasn't all that into it.
Gonna change the argument and say Dale was even less than Clinton or Penelope. Before the pairing, all we knew about him was that he played WoW and delivered pizzas. That was it. He was as deep of a character as the Vespavenger or Pizza Girl.
Yeah the comic has fallen into the habit of just pairing up spare characters, which unless this is just a little comical interlude, it appears hes taking the same approach with May/Momo X Sven, right now.
Given that background pairing means putting those characters on the bus I'm guessing Jeph wants to get rid of one of the androids. Sven's already all but written out so no net loss there.
May's pretty triggering and has the soul of Yelling Bird so my bet's on her. No way the hypocritical, preachy, moralizing Momo gets the axe.
Basically he shows up as a long-time customer that knows about the "secret menu" that none of Marten's "friends" ever told him about.
He says something about the relationship being in trouble.
I only remember it because I "WTF'd" and also because I started having an inkling that this was the beginning of the end.
Now I don't read webcomics altogether except for the /co/ edits.
Believe it or not "secret menu" was searchable on the wiki.
That would have been helpful if I still gave a shit about QC, as I said, after that the artwork (which, sadly, peaked about then) and the story went to shit, so I stopped giving Handstabby any more traffic.
That's fucking Dale?
You know an evolving art style isn't a problem if you don't have 30 goddamn characters with some of them disappearing for years at a time. Cause when they come back, I both don't recognize AND don't remember them.
It's like reading a Disney movie Children's Picture Novelization, everything feels so still.
Like, amazing backgrounds, but flat characters. Nothing interacts with the background.
You might consider reading this page's notes, which talks a little about motion
Other than that, not bad. Good job. Please continue.
I'm only 47 pages in but here are some things I'd like to point out:
>Like a lot of others have pointed out, the backgrounds are amazingly rendered and in comparison the characters themselves look flat and out of place. Maybe this suggestion would be too time consuming for a web comic, but have you considered painting in the same style for the characters as you do for the background itself?
>I love the history aspects you've thrown in thus far. I have ancestry in Norway and it's just cool to learn more about it.
Keep up the good work anon.
It means she's deliberately overpronouncing it because the sound of his name amuses her. For example, pronouncing the second syllable as the word "ton" as opposed to with a schwa vowel or something.
Doesn't that mean he could work up like three weeks worth of buffer in one eight-hour workday?
Hell, four, considering he doesn't update on the weekends. That's an entire month.
He could work one eight-hour day and make an entire month's worth of strips (and get paid $10,000).
Let's assume for the sake of argument that it takes him a full hour per strip, then. Assuming he put out one strip every day of the year (which he doesn't), that's 45 eight-hour days per year. Less than six weeks. Let's be generous and stretch that to about two months if he doesn't want to work on weekends.
This man does, at most, two months of work per year and makes $120,000. And he has the audacity to COMPLAIN about this job (that affords him six figures, and ten months per year of free time), because people are mean to him on twitter and tumblr.
It's pretty evident that jeph doesn't make a buffer for two main reasons.
1) He's incredibly lazy and likes to do QC right before they're due up
2) He doesn't want to risk his fans reacting negatively to a storyline and having to abort material he's already made
He defends this by saying, "I do make buffers, you guys, but every time I do, they just get used up", meaning that he's either lying or doesn't realize that making a buffer entails the production of strips while the buffer is being eaten up.
The closest evidence we have for him actually making strips in advance are the ones he makes before he goes to cons, which are always made the day or two before he leaves and are always miscounted.
