Why does his DC art look so much better than his Marvel hart? It's not even close.
>>
>>77646591
DC characters are more "epic" and mythical by default
>>
>>77646591
DC charecter, at least the more well known ones, on the whole have stronger designs.
>>
>>77646809
I think it's the simplicity of the DC designs that help actually. The bottom is mostly spandex and simple masks. On top he's dealing with armor, shields, more elaborate masks and it all just look off.
>>
>>77646591
The bottom has more simple designs.
>>
>>77646591
It's the lighting.

The single light source in the DC pic makes the characters stand out more, makes them appear more vivid. The Marvel pic has too much light so everything starts to merge together rather than have all the characters stand out from one another.
>>
>>77646591
He likes DC more so he puts more effort into it.
>>
Alex Ross has to be the single most overrated creator in comics, and that's including the likes of Grant Morrison and Alan Moore.
>>
>>77646591
He can only do spandex competently.
>>
Because he likes DC more. He has a room full of Superman shit at his house.

Both of them are dumb.
Because designs from the 40s-60s are completely subjective and to some of us, all superhero costumes in this style are stupid.
>>
>>77647070
He can only do covers, and even with covers I prefer art that actually reflects the interiors. His art is too stiff and lifeless to do interior art. His life-like depictions are a boring gimmick.

Just looks like his same neighbors dressed up in holloween costumes to me.
>>
>>77647170
Hehe, Thor and Batman have same jaw.
>>
Cause DC has a more firm style look to their Silver Age

and Kirby's art isn't supposed to look realistic

some of his recent covers have been good, that one of Spidey and Negative dude fighting on a building is great
>>
>>77646591

Their only quality is that they look quite photoreaslistic.

DC costumes are usually based on actual clothing which gives the artist a better sense of what everything is supposed to look like, and if that isn't the case, DC has had a longer history of live-action adaptations to show what their suits might actual look like which, again, helps inform the artist, especially an artist like Ross.

His style is realism, and style is fucking irrelevant. We are discussing his competence and he is factually incredible.
He may trace but mainly he has models in his studio who pose for him.
And countless painters trace base outlines, that is not a flaw.
He still painstakingly puts each stroke of paint on the paper by hand.

Man I can never get enough of the contrarian idiots shitting on Ross.

Differences in preference are gonna affect how much you like it and yes his compositional prowess pales when compared to the classic artists.

But almost everything he does looks good. I love his ability to render the styles of the greats like Kirby, Swan, Ditko, and Cardy accurately in his own photorealistic art.

Yeah he's not good for interiors and linear art (except in Marvels) but his covers are consistently great and perfectly capture the epic, historical feeling of the classic scenes and covers he pays tribute to.
>>
>>77649891
When Ross is the right fit for a project, it's great. Marvels is probably my favorite, but I also love Kingdom Come, and World's Greatest Superheroes is some GOAT shit.
>>
>>77649568
This is what happened to Final Fantasy VII. It's so overrated that it's underrated.
>>
>>77647923
Ross never read How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way.

There's a section of that book about dramatic poses...Ross tends towards the ones branded as faggotry by HtDCtMW.
>>
>>77649930
>overrated
Overrated is the ultimate shit tier criticism. It accomplishes nothing other than saying "I don't like a thing that other people like."

The Beatles are probably overrated, but that doesn't mean they're a bad band. It just means that a large amount of people would call them the best of all time, and that's probably not the case.
>>
>Implying he's not a GOAT painter in the industry

>>77649923
Kingdom Come fits MOST of the time, with some shots like that first one of Captain Marvel being absolute classics. But I think some parts are indeed too static, like the super nightclub.

Marvels is just perfect throughout, even the action set piece parts with the Namor/Torch fights look like classical depictions of great battles.

Doctor Fate maybe, I think he'll definitely show up in the CWVerse eventually.
Commander/Citizen Steel maybe.
I think Stargirl has got to show up on the CW sometime, if not in Legends then some other time.

Yes, that's why Alan Scott is GL in Kingdom Come. Ross wanted Hal, DC wanted Kyle, so they compromised.

This was his sole Kyle image for years, from a DC Universe poster. No idea if he's loosened his stance in recent years.

In fact, Kyle could have been used as an example of a 90s hero done right, given KC's critique of EXTREME 90s superheroes.

He really, really prefers comics and characters from when he was a kid, the Silver Age. And that preference heavily skews towards DC. (he's done plenty of modern Marvel characters. Still doing them today.) This is from an interview in 2004 with the Onion:

>The Onion: Looking at your work, Bruce Timm’s animated series, Alan Moore’s America’s Best Comics line, and, to a certain extent, Grant Morrison’s run on JLA, there seem to have been efforts to return to a Silver Age approach. Even Superman’s dog Krypto is back.

>Alex Ross: What you have is a bunch of 40-year-olds and thirtysomethings like myself. We grew up with this stuff thinking of it a certain way, and we’re rejecting what was kind of knocked around on us the last few years. Basically, what still is going on in modern continuity, especially at DC Comics, is a rejection of everything they did in the 1990s to compete with the then-hip-and-happening changes coming from the more tumultuous time of what Marvel and then Image comics did. We’re sort of in a repairing stage. Those of us who are kind of these Silver Age purists who think you don’t need to fix what isn’t broken, we’re getting our way because more of us are in control at the moment.

So that leads to him having certain preferences. Like he prefers Dick Grayson as Robin, even as an adult, and doesn't like to draw him as Nightwing. (Though he's not as hard about this as with Kyle -- he even did a redesign once.)

Firestorm is another character he apparently dislikes. Ross has never painted him other than when he repainted a Perez Crisis cover that he appears on. Even all that silver age JLA stuff he's done, the rosters always stop before Firestorm joins. The best guess is that Firestorm joined the JLA after Iris Allen was murdered in the pages of the Flash, and Ross sees that as the point when DC started having darker stories, so he keeps his stories set before that.

Here's a thumbnail sketch of a page from Justice, where Firestorm was originally slotted between Phantom Stranger and Red Tornado.

>>
>>77654804
He still does Astro City covers, but I don't think he has much if any interest in the New 52. I tried to find any New 52 work he'd done but there was none, and this from a bleeding cool interview in 2012.

>[The New 52] is a tough thing to see. All those comics that you grew up reading, none of them count. It’s not quite an all-service kind of menu of storytelling. Marvel did their Ultimates by saying “Hey, you can either jump on board, or you can read the regular stuff, it’s ok.” There’s no forced “This is it, and this is all it’s ever going to be.”
>>
It just seems like he's more of a fan of DC than Marvel desu.

The DC heroes lineup is a lot easier to put together in those epic looking poses though. Probably because they're pretty much today's version of the ancient Greek pantheon.

The Marvel heroes don't give off that vibe, so that makes them less iconic, memorable, and so less favorable for Alex Ross I suppose.
>>
His art is shit. It looks amazing, and he's an incredibly skilled artist, but I think oil paintings aren't very easy to digest as comic book panels. There's a reason ligne claire (and stuff like it) is so popular.

>>
>>77656216
>As a fan, which of the superheroes that have been represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are you the most satisfied by?

>Ross: Well, I love Chris Evans so much in his portrayal of Steve Rogers. I don’t love any of the costumes they put him in, but I can still enjoy the movies he’s made. I also would be one of the people who said that if they didn’t get Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange in the upcoming movie they would have lost everything. That would have been the biggest screw-up on Marvel’s part if they didn’t nail him down.
Heh
>>
>>77656257
>And what was the process like then to come up with the covers for each of the new issues? Did you get to be in the writers’ room and pick a particular scene or character that you wanted to showcase on the cover?

>Ross: Not at this stage of my career. I’ve had that before in various projects over the years—starting 20 years ago when I was doing covers for Astro City. I’ve had experience being so heavily involved with shaping the story that go under the covers I do, and it’s much of what I did at the beginning of my career. Now, with the stuff I do with Marvel, I’m largely getting directions handed over to me. “OK, this is what we think would make a great cover” and aside from a few things that are stand-alone shots of characters, I’m taking their directions. These are not necessarily my versions of these things. If I’m going to be doing The Avengers as I know them, they’re going to have the look and feel of the characters as they were designed in the ’60s, or something that regards that continuity from 40 to 60 years ago. I’m far less a contributing part of all of this, which in a way is a break because I’ve had so much to do with the other things I’ve worked on throughout my career. It’s a relief [Laughs]. I’m trying to learn to not care.

>People obviously accuse me of being a stiff painter who's just applying these still images to an otherwise bright and lively form
Even Ross himself acknowledges that people say it.

>But that does mean he sucks at it, because he's not using the tricks used to depict movement when he should be. It makes it all look stiff and static. Making things look like still photos instead of depicting movement is lazy and bad.

> His style just seems too stiff for comics, but I love most of his covers and his design work is impeccable.
> The Alex Ross sample feels so stiff by comparison. It’s beautifully done design work, and I he clearly has an eye for detail, but he’s missing the sense of movement.
>I agree with others that Ross, while good at what he does, should not have cracked the top 10. His storytelling ability is nonexistent.
> Put me in the camp of Alex Ross paints nice pictures – and some of them have great impact and terrific interplay with the “words”. But, the sequential storytelling leaves me more flat – I feel like I have to work to make the connections between panels. The photo-realism does blow me away at times (of course Kirby used actual photos in his Fourth World books), but not as a story piece.
> Ross’s stuff is like reading one of those photo stories they had in UK comics in the 80s. I’m sure it takes a lot of hard work, but it’s just kind of boring now.
> he’s painted waaaaay too many portraits of super-heroes standing around scowling. ... His storytelling was never stellar, but the attractiveness of his art could carry his comics.

This guy is right. DC's been just as bad.

> Hal's on the run from the law
> Superman, the "american alien" is wearing a t-shirt and has a buzzcut.
That's not all of them, but it isn't like the others haven't been through their share of bs. Just because Marvel is being pushy about race/gender diversity this time around doesn't make what they're doing that different from what comics have always done and will always continue to do.
>>
>>77661738
I don't much follow DC but I see Batman, Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman and all these other classic are still around and are prominently featured in their comics.
Unlike in Marvel when there's no more Thor, no more Captain America, no more Wolverine etc. etc.

That somehow feels like that DC's characters are more classic and more important than Marvel's characters.

They did make Wally black over at DC and that's a pretty huge change, Marvel hasn't gone back and changed the race of a character that already existed.
>>
>>77661857
This.

The status quo will be back in DC soon enough, it'll take longer in Marvel, but there too. In the meantime, try to appreciate these temporary changes for what they are.
>>
>>77661888

>>
>>77661869
There's a difference between temporarily replacing Bruce with Jean Paul and portraying JP as being in the wrong with a story building up to the point in which Bruce will return and kick his as. Or the current one where Bruce is amnesic but still appears in the issues and Gordon is simply trying his best to help Gotham. There's a different between these and, say "Hey, you like Ghost Rider? No, it's only gonna get worse. Spider-man's gonna be the last but he'll go too. Peter Parker will be retired at some point or whatever, and we're gonna be stuck with Spider Gwen and Miles Morales.
>>
>>77661949

>>
>>77661954
First off, kiss my ass

Second, all characters come back. Hell, in Thor its already been confirmed Thor is coming back. They made temp changes because they felt it was cool and yes, to pander, but fucking no one panders forever. Especially not with top characters. Also, new management is always coming in.

So basically, you're a shitty little bitch who needs to get over it.
>>
>>77661981
Well, all I can say is we'll see.
>>
>>77661954
It isn't going to be like they're taking the title away from "niggers and feminists" it'll be that they're giving back the mantle to the original owner, and the character who had it will get their own identity back.
In the long term, the mantle pass just serves to strengthen the character who took it, as they will gain status from having been Cap or Batman or what have you.

Catalogues of middle aged people wearing colorful costumes.
The people he draws lack any sense of heroism or grandiosity. They would be great for a deconstruction of the cape genre. They would fit a comic like Watchmen for instance. It woul work for Batman in DKR.

I find that DC tends to give their characters more unique hobbies/likes while marvel never really goes into that. It helps the characters to seem more 3 dimensional.
