I can picture Connie actually suggesting they do it together, fight Yellow Diamond, but Steven will refuse risking her getting hurt, and instead go in and talk YD down. He'll walk up to her, slowly deflecting blasts from some sort of laser beam (or alternatively deflecting blows from a weapon) as he tries to convince her to stop whatever it is she's doing.

and then when she tires out, he'll finally get right up against her. She'll have a terrified look on her face, she can't stop this monstrosity no matter what she throws at it. This would happen more often if directors and writers had some real balls and actually put their own funding into the project. You know why Stars Wars The Clone Wars had someone fucking decapitate four people on screen, not robots but real people? Why it looked so damn good for a TV CGI production?

Presumably this is more a problem with those gems who are not made for any creative thinking, there are probably castes that are like a more science oriented Peridot to develop new technologies. I'd imagine that they would have to be reasonably far up the totem pole so their input can be considered legitimate. Probably the higher up in the caste system you go the more used to creative thinking a gem would be.

Judging by Lapis' clothes, she doesn't seem like a gem designed for fighting like Quartzes, but her dress isn't exactly fancy either. If I had to guess what Lapis is for, I'd say it's for terraforming with water. The Water Temple in Cheeseburger Backpack looks like something she could have pulled off, and when the water collapsed it looked similar to the scene at the end of Ocean Gem.
