Oh man, oh man, oh man. I'm actually going through a fair amount of it right now.
I LOVE the Homestuck albums, just because there's so goddamn much material to listen to. I've spent the last I-don't-know-how-many months sorting through and weeding out the really shitty pieces and finding the gems.

First, MeGaLoVania. Gotta get that one out of the way, since most people know it by now. Purchasing Undertale later today and playing it all weekend is part of the plan.

The entire Cherubim album
Emerald Terror, Red Disc, Pink Cat from Colors and Mayhem 2
Bec Noir from the same. Something about the stupid dog samples makes me love it.
The Nic Cage song from Vol. 6 still gets a smile too.
Black Rose // Green Sun, and a large portion of volumes 7 and 8.
Whole bunch more that I can't list here. There's a great wealth of talent in these, but so many people dismiss them out of hand because of their association with Hussie and Homestuck. It's really a shame.

I think one of my favorite things about Homestuck is the use of leitmotifs in all the music. It's cool to hear Doctor remixed and sampled subtly into other things every now and then.
That said, there is a heinous amount of shitty remixes.

My general music tastes lean more on the classical/proggy/"weird" side of things, and it usually corresponds to my favorite HS tracks and most of the corresponding remixes (Doctor, Aggrieve, Explore, Crystalanthemums, Upward Movement, Endless Climb, Flare, Three in the Morning, Liquid Negrocity, MeGaLoVania, Even in Death, Moonsetter, Mother, etc.)

Of the lesser appreciated remixes I particularly like Dave's Aggrieve Remix and Clockwork Contrivance for their trippiness factor, as well as Noirscape.

I discovered homestuck because of undertale (like 90% of the new fanbase) and i must say, after binge reading it for a week or so, it's one of the most unique experiences i've had in my life, great fun.

Are you finished already? A week sounds like much too little time for that.

I've been slowly trying to go through all the albums in chronological order recently, and I don't know if my taste "refined", or just changed, but those early albums really aren't as good as I remember them. There's a lot of crap in volumes 1-5, especially 5, they went for quantity over quality in that one.

I will say though, right around The Felt album, I noticed a boost in overall professionalism, and it really started to shine around Volume 6. there were still some duds after it though, like The Wanderers.

I don't know exactly what you're referring but if it's the "everyone dies and then john goes back and "fixes" everything", i must admit it felt kind of cheap in a way that's hard to explain, it's like he wrote himself into a place the fan base didn't like and just kind of went back on everything he did because of reasons, but i do feel like there wasn't much potential to end the series in a good note with how "GAME OVER" went, and to be fair it kinda came out of nowhere like "fuck you, everyone's dead".

This was always a favorite of mine. For some reason it reminds me of Final Fantasy XII, but I really couldn't say why. I guess it gives me that same sense of exploration, even though it's from the Felt-themed album.

Yeah, Mobius Trip is vaguely echoing a Bowie-esque style of music, is nigh entirely disconnected from the comic itself, and as a result feels like it comes out of left field. Most of the rest of homestuck music is coming from a pretty firm video game background and ties into the comic pretty well. It isn't surprising that it is divisive. That being said I love it, absolutely one of my favorites.

Others I really like are Medium and Sburb. I definitely have a soft spot for concept albums.

What's the point of giving them focus if they're all going to die? The trolls (for the most part) are more interesting as characters with potential for development than plot-aliens-that-do-stuff. To not make an absolutely pointless read without changing the characters, you'd have to focus exclusively on the ones who majorly influence the story, including the more plot-devicey ones such as Gamzee or Aradia. Well let me rephrase myself - Tavros' main thing was being constantly under Vriska's thumb, which was still the case after he died until he flipped Vriska off, and even then all of the gathering of the ghost army was done off-screen. And that's also still the case with Tavrosprite, even when consoling with Jake he's still rather wishy-washy and gets shut down easily, albeit with more resistance, by Vriska.

Jake's main thing is about getting over his own self-absorbedness and self-isolation, realizing that he has friends that are there for him as well as realizing that his friends do actually care about more than his physique. I do think that he and Dirk will eventually talk and forgive each other and themselves over their issues, as well as talking with Jane about her issues, and that'll be the major step in Jake's growth.

As for Dave's sexuality I think there's a possibility that he's tripping over confessing a crush towards not Karkat, but John. But he also had a crush on Jade as well, and he was conflicted about that while in the meteor. Not to deny about the possibility of Dave and Karkat dating during the meteor trip. They possibly did in order for Dave to understand his sexuality, but then he decided for him and Karkat to just stay bros, which created all of that awkwardness between them.

Jake doesn't seem to know how he feels about anything since breaking up with Dirk.

That just leaves Dave, who, while currently in a relationship with Karkat, still feels attracted to girls given his comments about Jane.

I'm pretty sure that was just a case of Vriska fanatically following her ancestor's journal, since it's revealed later that Mindfang once held Kanaya's ancestor as a sex slave. Her character at that point was also pretty much "I wanna be Mindfang" and a huge part of her arc was admitting that following her ancestor's journal so religiously wasn't a great idea.

I also wonder if Vriska will survive. It makes little sense to bring back a character just to kill them again, but the caprice of Hussie knows know bounds.

Isn't there some sort of unspoken rule in writing where your stories should age with your audience? Your original audience of 11 year olds isn't gonna stay 11 forever, so it's not a bad idea to reflect that.

I can't think of very many iconic stories though that started with an adult, or at least older audience, and then had its median reader age decrease.

I don't think so, actually now that I'm thinking about it, that rule does exist, but for things that get released in chunks, like a book every year/few years, something like a comic or a webcomic usually keeps aiming at the same age group, even as the original fans get older

Character-focused? Absolutely. Character development-focused? Hell no. Act 6 has dragged out many, many character arcs and let even main protagonists remain in complete stagnation. Look at the Alpha kids: There was a fuckton of dialogue between them establishing their issues and relationship problems, but save for Roxy, none of them have changed much.

Also, the humour changed a lot. Compare Meenahquest's in-your-face jokes with the subtle setups and easily missable humour of Acts 1-4. Those are very different.

i really dont know who the latest updates are aimed at. even for shippers and people who're really invested in teen stuff, there's not enough.

there's just no point in most of what's happening, and it's bad to read archivally, so that won't help much.

There was a spike in Homestuck cosplays in cons this year after we got some updates, a lot of them in the 15ish or so year old range, I don't think he's aiming it at shippers though, not sure what to call who he's aiming it at but it's still getting attention

I don't think many of the characters' arcs were focused much or given much depth during Acts 1-4, Act 5 is the transitional period, and then in Act 6 you get John's ranting and projecting about Con Air and Batman, Rose's drunken/dazed rambling about her mom and her main purpose, Dave's lamenting about his role which ties to how he was raised, Jade's deep-seated insecurities and her having to be isolated, and so on. And we're far from having their's and the alphas' developments completed just yet.

Vriska: less charismatic, unluckier edition. He certainly feels just as awful and real as her. Of all the murder-happy trolls, he might be the most relatable in incredibly cringeworthy ways - his motives are easy to discern and judge and constantly make you go 'Eridan, NO'. A lot of his actions, while completely unjustifiable, can be explained by context and pressure.
