I can't really blame people for getting mad. Writers want to represent gay relationships in their cartoons, but they are too scared to show the progression of a same-sex romance on screen. I guess for fear of backlash from executives/angry parents/dropped ratings?

So instead they drop subtle hints that something might be there to please their 15-25 year old online following, then say fuck it and go 0-100 real quick with there suddenly being two characters in love.


Korra is /co/'s favorite example of this; some letters exchanged off screen and a couple of blushes and then suddenly holding hands and staring longingly into each others eyes in the final scene of the series. And the writers act like thats the natural progression of a romantic interest. They lay a subtle foundation, skip the meat and jump straight to being a couple.

Thats why its a jarring change in character for people who weren't looking for the romance in the first place.


In the case of AT its not as bad since in the lore you have these two characters who have known each other for centuries and have obviously had a strong and emotional friendship (indicated by the "I'm just your problem" song).

I think people are jumping the gun because "Bubbline" isn't literally canon in the show (at least not yet). But it becomes a natural reaction to this direction of writing after previous examples.


Personally I'm gay so I don't get buttmad about it all. But if writers are going to have a same-sex relationship I wish they'd show the two characters being in love, instead of just making them be in love. Does that make sense?

I think I actually would have liked Teen-PBxFinn. But I think between seasons 2 and 3 the writers realized that almost any way they try to stick PB with Finn, it would epicly undermine her character and reinforce the "girls are rewards that you earn" stereotype. Thus, it is my belief that Fubblegum shippers are SOL.

Anyway as soon as they dropped the Fubblegum motifs, that's exactly when PB started getting waaaay more deep and interesting as a character. She stopped being just "Princess Peach + mad scientist" (which is already pretty cool, but shallow), and started being "Despotic morally grey immortal ruler of a people she designed to be weak and subservient to her". How fucking awesome is that?
