So my sister discovered webcomics around the time we got a computer for Christmas and the Internet was still very new to people. She kept calling me over to look at her favorite one, a gay comic called Boy Meets Boy.

"What? OH GODDAMNIT SIS I DON'T WANNA SEE YOUR GAY SEX COMIC LEAVE ME ALO- Huh? What's that link say? RPG World? Click it."

Laughed for hours and hours reading it. Helped that my friend got me into Final Fantasy games at the time.

I believe that's my answer as well, although it's been a very long time. It might have been; what was the one about a bunch of linux help desk people? It was also not very good.

But, yeah, I read Megatokyo up until the original writer was pushed off so the artist could, whatever the fuck he did.

User Friendly? Yeah that was also pretty lousy, it was just the novelty of "it's a comic strip but it's about things only WE care about!" which was a big deal in 1998.

>>

Oh, yeah, you're right. Zman made this one. I was thinking of the chick that did MUTE, yeah.

It's been a long time. It all blends together after a few years.
>>

>>77492782

Z is trying to tie this one in to the same continuity as Bar'd and a select few others. A veritable "universe" I guess. Left behind the fancomics and tried to make something original, or at least as much as you can get with sprites. Z advertised another one coming up but so far, nothing. Typical, typical.
>>
>>77492782
Zman is now just Z and is transgendered or something now.
The chick that did MUTE is Shard. I think she has a new comic out now too.

Megatokyo. Way back in Middleschool in like 01 or 02 in the 6th grade I started reading this til I dropped it some time in High-school (so before 08)

Before it became a mellow dramatic fest of bullshit this comic was hilarious as all hell.

Largo made this comic... Then the focus went full Piro and drama shit.

Also fun fact when I first went to the website the character section wasn't up.
It's been a decade since then...
Still no character section.
>>
Been talking back and forth, I should probably say my first webcomic.

Bob and George. It still gets nostalgia points and it was the grandaddy sprite comic to be sure. The layout is pretty boring (even for a sprite comic) but I'll have to admit that I still find the writing mostly funny to this day.

I briefly BRIEFLY hung around, mostly in the IRC as, I think, "Roulade," with a searingly teal Mega Man X sprite edit avatar.

It was... a different time.
>>
>>77494626

Ah, that was before my time probably. I found the comic during the tail end of its run; while George was being foisted around different timelines.
>>
>>77494538
He went to school. Now he's back but he wants to work on his art skill some more before returning to Vreakerz. He is currently working on a short story.
>>
>>77494663
I doubt even those who were around then remember me. I mostly lurked, occasionally shot the shit with the rest of the gang regarding plans for the AMAZING stories we'd tell with our recolor OCs, showed off a sprite sheet or two, and never actually got anywhere with it. I can't have been a regular for longer than a year.

It was a good time, though. Fun bunch of people, remarkably little drama, though I hear there was some if you knew where to look. Wish I still had the awful sprite sheets I made back then, if only for nostalgia's sake.
>>
>>77494712

I started with vgcats myself after browsing the Nintendo forums around 2002-3, from there, quickly branched out, hit most vgrelated ones, and saw so many comics die over the years.

Konsekai: Swordwaltzer

It was some weird sci-fi furry comic that was kind of like Xenogears with anthros. At one point the protagonist warps to Earth and gets involved in the VHS/Beta conflict for a couple of chapters.

There was another chapter where the protagonist's best friend climbs down into the planet's lightless core and slumbers for eternity.

I can't remember the first but I think for a brief time I read this comic called Furthia High. It wasn't very good (even after the author rebooted the story).

I hung around the forums for a brief bit and Immelman was part of the community. Just about every general thread he started was bait and the most insolent way. The biggest one is while Linkara was developing Lightbringer he would roost in art critique threads. He was convinced that the secret to drawing good was just one special guideline, that the complexity of drawing could be reducted to a single rule. When people told him otherwise he would outright ignore them.

At one point one of the more prominent members of the community told him off for his naive idea of how to grow as an artist and he just deflected that criticism too. A few people came to his defense, which was unnecessary.

It ended up being pretty funny and interesting and the art improved a ton. Should reread it sometime.

Here's one that you won't understand in context and I barely remember. Basically a bunch of people blocked me and one of the moderators constantly abused me until he got demodded. This one is from January 2010 and yes, that's what I named the pic way back then and I will NOT change it to not be stupid. Snapshot in time and all that.

As an MGS comedy comic this was surprisingly funny and full of feels. I do however fucking hate the art.
>>
>>77490314
It was actually pretty cool at the time. People look at the original comics now and go "God, these jokes are generic as hell", but they were actually from back when parodying weeaboos was barely a thing (even South Park hadn't done a Japanese episode yet), so this comic focused around what if Japan actually worked the way year-2000 weebs thought it did was really rather novel. Coupled with a nice one-setting-two-perspectives setup and a joke every strip, and it's not hard to see why it got so popular.

Pity it went to hell though. It's pretty obvious that they ran out of jokes, and when one of the writers left to become a failed politician (seriously, he was such a bad politician), the story crapped up too.

Biz is just the shortform of a notorious troll's real name. I didn't want to say the full name because fuck if I bring that asshole to /co/ or 4chan. That fucker needs to stay away.

As for you, I have no idea who you could be but if we're going to swap stories of shitty webcomic communities, back when I was a member of keenspot there was this level 10 hipster named yeahduff. This guy didn't outright say he hated popular music but everytime someone brought up classic acts like the Beatles or Pink Floyd this fucker would be there to roll his eyes and sigh, "Yeaaaah, they're overrated."

One of my favourite quotes from yeahduff was, "Creativity cannot exist without capitalism. Art thrives only within the free market. I'll never listen to Broken Social Scene or any other Canadian musician. Bunch of socialists." (not verbatim)

I think that's kinda cool though. Dude needs a forum if he doesn't already have one, but creators that are actually willing to communicate with their fanbases are pretty neat. (they don't have to even follow advice or kowtow to fans or anything, just the fact they communicate)

I think the first webcomic I encountered was a Metroid sprite comic that had Samus traveling with a dumb guy in a grey power suit. Or something like that. Before then I was mostly just into animated cartoons like Homestar and the stuff of Keentoons' ilk.

No, I'm a homofag. As bad as Jack might be it's a hell of a lot better than some bland boring shit like QC.

A very common sentiment around these parts.

Hopkins main (possibly only) strength as a writer is that he can create interesting concepts and characters that keep the reader going.

It hasn't really gone up or down. I just found a foothold in the community, and a lot of the prominent people who do fan art are really good at drawing.

Interesting note:
The artist for Vinci and Arty and Hopkins (author of Jack) were buddies back in the day and had some crossover events. I sometimes wonder if the reason why Vinci and Arty stopped is because the author had attach what is essentially her lighthearted feel-good comic with the gore-ridden rape fantasy that is Jack.

Man, I remember when they said it would be ending around 2013-2014, and they had an ending in mind

Guess they'll keep it going till it's just a series of watercolor talking heads with no bodies.
>>
Why is there so much furry?

I know /co/ is one of the furriest boards but how is it so prevalent?
>>
>>77520059
Some dude who's been making the same sprite comics for over a decade.

That sounds surreal like a David Lynch film.

Does Space Moose count as a webcomic if it began life in print? Can you even call it print if it was in a Canadian campus paper?

If it does it was totally my first back in like '96.
>>
>>77535519
A Canadian college newspaper doesn't count as print. That's too obscure.

I'm pretty sure they are still friends considering the author's husband is also the webmaster of the Jack website.

As for Vinci and Arty, I'd say it was due her getting and wanting to move on the other things. Like how most furry comics of that era ended.

I'm the guy you replied, I don't know about the writing, the political strips were retarded and the only thing I remember is who fucked who.

Charby the Vampire is one of those horrible comics that only TVTropes ever seems to talk about, like Misfile or El Goonish Shive.

the whole show is just an 80s wankfest but actually done pretty good. The main character is voiced by kid Goku's original english VA too, so thats neat

First webcomic I remember reading?

Dan and Mabs Furry Adventures. Yep. The one based off the authors furcadia characters. I remember it used to have an amazing links section, so I got in the habit of checking the site every day so I wouldn't have to maintain my own bookmarks for other webcomics; back in the days of webcomics being made by everyone with a scanner, a tablet, or a mouse and MSpaint, DMFA had a links section listing somewhere like a hundred webcomics, organized by update schedule along with a short synopsis of what the webcomic was about. From that links section, I found webcomics like Alien Dice, Gaming Guardians, Jack, Bruno the Bandit, Sluggy Freelance, College Roomies from Hell, Charby the Vampirate, 1/0, Adventurers...

Nowadays, I can just keep my own bookmarks instead of checking someone elses website, especially since I re-checked their links section as soon as I was reminded by this thread, and it's been carved down considerably.

I remember when every webcomic worth the bandwith had a links page. Used to be entirely possible to just hop link page to link page, trawling archives and finding more and more webcomics. S'how I ended up reading shit like Road Waffles or Witchprickers. And Twokinds. Fucking Twokinds. I really miss the days of link-hopping archive to archive, but I know nowadays art I used to think was really good would stick out as utter awful garbage that'd ruin even actually good writing.

>Dan and Mabs Furry Adventures.
Oh man, I remember being into that for, like, a month or two. It's funny how I only really found out about it because of the sprite comic being done by their brother or something.
It's cool how they improved over time.
Yeah, link pages were pretty much the best way to find more, with those "best webomic" lists getting you nowhere more often than not.
>>
My first webcomic was Girl Genius. Unlike most other comics at the time, GG was done by professionals and had an professional tinge to it. That's what drew me in. I had a damning opinion on the amateurish nature of most webcomics back then and GG seemed legit.

Looking back, GG doesn't hold up all that well.

A comic is the most prevalent form of furry storytelling.

Putting it online costs from little to nothing.

To be honest....

That Bleedman Powerpuff Girl comic. I need to pick that back up actually

I read a lot of bad webcomics that I remember by visuals but can't reacall the names of. They probably had a very low reader count and aren't even online anymore. I'd like to see some of these just for nostalgia tough.
