It's a pity too, since I like the show.
I get that it's done on purpose, but I think it turned away a lot of people.

First I thought it was an ATHF ripoff, then I sort of saw the difference in style, but still found it repulsive, THEN I got used to it and considered it acceptable.

...But still, I realized I am used to the main cast. Every time a NEW character enters the frame I groan, and it takes me a few minutes to adjust. Why does everything NEED to be so ugly? I understand the Sheriff, he's fun, but the rest are not only ugly characters (which I can get behind), but purposefully UNAPPEALING to look at. You can make an ugly character that doesn't hurt to watch.

There is so much brown on the screen, too, the sound is top-notch, but the backgrounds feel bleak in a way that I feel could be avoided.

Ugly, stylized, stylish and appealing can be blended together, even though it's hard. But the show doesn't try. It wants to be ugly in an ugly way.

I guess I'm "ok" with it, but I sure would prefer a more cohesive, pleasant art style.

I actually watched this mess with some friends on netflix a while back as a "palette cleanser" after watching Human Centipede 2.

It was so garish that we eventually just stopped after the second episode and decided to call it a night. The robot is whiny as hell, the human is a generic "we gotta go do good things because it's our job" leader, and the brown creature is there as a poor attempt at comic relief.

They're consistently bad because Canadian broadcast networks like Teletoon and YTV need a certain ratio of Canadian content as dictated by the government. This is to prevent the Great White North from becoming America 2: North Harder. However, these Canadian cartoons don't get government funding, and since they're a requirement, they usually get stiffed on budget. A lot of Canadian talent usually ends up migrating south to where there's actual work with actual pay. What we have is just underfunded, under-supported, and under-the-par cartoons. They keep them running for years because it's cheap and still fills the requirements for the Canadian content.

At least try next time. Apart from backgrounds, and some rare few scenes like those with food or when something mechanical shows up, it's not a very pleasant style, it's like a moeshit fantasy anime. The Dofus cartoon looks much better (and imo was genuinely more fun to watch, the setting was more entertaining this way as Wakfu didn't have much of a decent overarching plot anyway save for Nox who was ultimately just DCAU Mr. Freeze mk II, it was all filler and then weird space bullshit)
