There was a subplot many moons ago in Something Positive, where one of the support character's mom had a super freakout when her husband died, and she had to drop from college and her job to make sure she didn't kill herself. Once the mom recovered, she was all about praising Jesus for helping her overcome her trials... and not her daughter who had to put her life on hold to save her.

For me the problem with the arc is the execution and the implications.

When Becky's dad locates her and he pulls out a gun, nobody sees this and calls the cops.

Okay.

Then Dina fights this crazy man with a gun yet instead of using his gun to hold Dina hostage and blackmail Becky, Becky's dad doesn't. He lets Dina go without a scratch on her which is really weird because he's apparently irrational and waving a weapon around. Why did he spare her? What was his thought process? Isn't that interesting? Does Toedad have no quarrel with Dina and doesn't want to hurt her? Why can't we get into that?

Then anyway he finds Becky and starts shooting in the air yet nobody in the apparently decently-populated area calls the cops until he forces Becky to come with him, which is okay I guess if we're going to believe that the cops are that slow to respond to crazy shit on campus.

The next thing though is that Amazi-girl is called in. There's literally no reason for anyone to chase after Becky, because the dad was already seen by multiple witnesses brandishing a gun and kidnapping a woman. All they'd need to do is let the police handle it, then Becky would be completely free to do what she wants while her father went to jail. You could argue that in the heat of the moment everyone forgot this plotpoint but I'd argue that the pacing and very calm tone of the parts of Toedad and Becky in their car completely remove the urgency.

Amazigirl pursues Becky and then you get an overly-long retarded comical chase scene that has nonsense physics and weird shit like Amazigirl slamming into a car windshield and having the driver speed up when any sane person would stop immediately. It's fucking dumb and goes on too long and while levity is useful in grim situations, in this case it just destroys any sense of danger and tension the comic had.

And then they have Amazigirl and Sal argue about shit but they're both horrible people so who cares.

Well, first off, our origins are different. SDA grew out of a failed second coming movement by William Miller (the date in question is now thought of as 'important', but definitely not the second coming) while the Jehovah's grew out of a group of radicals in Pennsylvania

as for beliefs, well, afaik, the JW's are a bit more out there than we are. They don't celebrate birthdays, for reasons that I don't quite remember. You know what turned me off of "Dead Winter"? That one guy who was in the beginning of the comic, who was the employer of the main chick who was last seen fighting off zombies while the MC didn't give it any second though, ended up becoming a psychopathic murderer who decapitated women who resembled the main chick and wearing them on his belt. Up until that development, the comic was a more lighthearted take on the post-apocalyptic zombie scenario.

In a similar fashion, this recent "Dumbing of Age" story was actually interesting to a point, that point being when Toedad went from "sympathetic villain who can't reconcile his Christian beliefs with his rebellious daughter and thus lashes up through violence repressed over decades" to "shitty hardcore Christian father". The story could have gone in one direction, but then it went in another, and I didn't like that second direction.

My cousins were homeschooled by pretty damn fundamentalist christian parents and they turned out alright. Helps that the parents have dialed back on it now that they're older and going off to junior college/vocational school. (Used to be they couldn't play pokemon with us because the parents were afraid it "taught evolution" but now they figured fuck it, kids are old enough to tell the difference between fiction and reality.)
