Princee Valiant? The torrent I got these with has 9 books, but I don't think that's all of them; Hal Foster wrote and drew this strip from 1938 to about 1971. Fantagraphics are reprinting the strip in these beautiful hardcovers, two years a book, and they've only managed 11 books so far.

If Willis' goal is to attack an idea or position, then creating a fictional character your position can win against is a straw man. If his goal is to make a story, then it's just a character.
Willis is shit partly because he can't keep these two things separate, and it really shows.
If you represent another person's argument through a character, you have complete control over his or her rhetoric. You can make them sound stupid, be dumbfounded when presented with an alternate point of view, use flimsy arguments, or kidnap their daughter and claim Satan is responsible, all without changing their "opinion".
