Okay so from what I can gather, Runey killed all the Jane Fosters because the moment he saw the first one he realised Battleworld wasn't real. But because he liked his life as a doom cop he decided to hide the truth by making sure no other Thor met a Jane Foster and came to the same realisation.
So when the real Jane Foster pops up and openly says that Doom is shit, all the Thors immediately click that they've been played and follow her.

tldr, Jane Foster is the key to make Thor realise Battleworld is a lie, Runey was content with the lie and was trying to keep it going by killing all the Jane Fosters
