why is comic coloring so ugly?

most comic coloring looks like that example.

Good coloring is rare. Cliff Chiang's run on Wondy had nice coloring and the colors for Chris Samnee on Daredevil.
>>
i don't have the images but Larroca's Iron Man run is the biggest offender
>>
>>77369194
Comic colouring isn't usually the best but OP is especially terrible, it's not usually quite so bad.

Short answer is because understanding light and colour is like the last stage of artistry and a lot of people never really get the hang of it, let alone on a time crunch. Also it's a pretty thankless job, how many colourists can you name?

That isn't good or well done coloring, that bright campy silly coloring that takes no time or effort you personally like but it has little artistic merit or depth.
This is good fucking coloring.
Don't bother with your pathetic fucking "muh comics are suppose to look bright and silly and blow sunshine up my ass" response.

I like the Gotham Academy background colors. Characters are colored more flatly but it sort of helps the effect (ie highlighting that it's kind of normal kids going to school in fucking Gotham).

I completely agree, the main reason I can't read Marvel is the generic art/colors putting me off.

Stylized colors on the other hand, they're sexy as fuck, pic related.
>>
>>77369300
>it has little artistic merit or depth.
Oh eat a fucking dick. Coloring doesn't get its value just from looking realistic or painterly. How things are colored creates an atmosphere and flat or bright silly colors are perfectly legitimate.

>>77369300
It's about atmosphere and intended effect, something can be brightly coloured and not necessarily painterly while still being the best colour choices. As long as it's appropriate.
>>
>>77369300
>>77369314
This is pretty OP tier coloring.
>>
Airbrushed gradients
Airbrushed gradients everywhere
>>
>>77369300

That looks ugly dude. It has all these unecessary streaks in the land and blond hair. That's not polished detail, that's just a bunch of digital brush blobs.
>>
>>77369413
Don't like that at all, same stuff but painted would work much better for that cause the colours could be blended well.
>>
>>77369579
Since when does blending = better?
>>
>>77369579
The graphic quality is actually a plot point and works quite well, you just want everything to be muddy and boring.
>>
>>77369527
The mountains do look pretty lame but other than that it's solid work. Its never been true that coloring is only good if every stroke is 100% blended.
>>
I like this type of coloring. Simpler doesn't always mean easier. It's well thought out and polished with the places they decide to shade and light. Filling your page up with a bunch of random airbrushy gradients does not make it better. This is effective visually for creating mood and compliments the art to easily be read.
>>
>>77369300
Those people look like they've been put under the effects of the equivelant of Super Eagle image filtering in emulators

It isn't ugly when you have talent:

>>
>>77369682
Good colouring emphasizes the story like a good layout or composition does.
Mediocre colouring is just filling in the blanks colouring book style.
Bad colouring is like OP, it actually detracts from the art and storytelling.

It's not about being painterly versus flat graphic, using a billion colors or just three. It's about contributing to the story and mod/atmosphere. Good colouring is way harder than good drawing imo
>>
>>77369613
Granted I haven't read that comic so maybe the art makes sense in the style of story. But from from what I get from that page the rainbow colours are too blocky for me, I would prefer more depth.

I love Matre Gracia's coloring. So vibrant with the perfect type of cel shading with vibrant colors.

computer colouring is rarely as good as painting or even pencil crayons like Longbow Hunters
>>
>>77369780
this is the perfect example of what >>77369748
said, it's just filling in the blanks, doesn't make it better or worse, it's just there.

In the story he's angered like an Aztec God,cand the colours kind of represent it and attack him. When he's caught up in the colours he gets kind of broken down, I don't have the page but I'll try and get it when I go home.

Patrick Gleason is usually given a good colourists thank god.

I really liked the coloring in Hawkeye. Aja+Hollingsworth was a great art team.
>>
>>77370000
It's just flats tho. I could do that. Not that its bad cause it worked perfectly.
>>
I can't help but feel like I'd read more comics if the art was left at the inking stage. Maybe I'm just a hipster or a weeb, but I've always preferred the look of b&w comics.
>>77369458
Time constraints are pretty limiting. It takes a long time to paint a whole page properly (without using shortcuts), but at the same time I feel like coloring doesn't add anything to a page unless the artist takes their time and avoids shortcuts like this.
>>
>>77369810
Actually in some of those areas you can see the colorist having his own style in the coloring like with certain light and hard shadows on characters like clothing folds or even rib muscles. It isn't just simply filling in blanks. It's that and going beyond to give the areas more distinction. Especially with Immonen since he does a simple and contrast style to his penciling.

>>77369810

>>77369881 <-this seems more of what you're talking about than this -> >>77369780

>>77370026
But if it worked perfectly then isn't it great colouring?
>>
>>77370058
Yeah. I'm just sayin' is all.
>>
>>77368915
why did they even hire an inker

dave stewart is still in the top tier, he's a real work horse too

>>77370118
it's uninspiring but agree with that anon, it works for it. It's better when the art ADDS to the story, but that has to be in there from the beginning of the writing phase and most comics don't do that
>>
>>77370423
Like I said it worked perfectly. I would argue that any more than flat color in Aja's Hawkeye would detract from it.
>>
why aren't more comics just inked with some tone added like manga?
>>
>>77370571
Because the most influential manga magazines demanded a quantity > quality mindset in terms of art, with the opposite being true for western comics. This is why you get weekly chapters of 16+ pages with manga and nothing even rivalling that in the west. There's a lot of exceptions though.
>>
>>77370682
Maybe if Land wasn't still getting work you;d have a point.
>>
>>77370763
>There's a lot of exceptions though.
>>
>>77369300
I bet you think the Killing Joke recolor looks better than the original
>>
>>77369881
The best coloring in comics is objectively Frazer Irving's work
>>
>>77368915
What is this from?

My asshole.

everyone in that comic looked like they just got out of a pool
