This is some armchair psychology, but I think it's a byproduct of how common it is for nerds to scrutinize entertainment when parts of a story's world are not explained thoroughly enough to their obsessive standards. No, this is not an acceptable way of telling a story. Those nerds that think that everything needs to be explained in excessive detail are not good at processing fiction. Good guys were trying to defeat all 10 members of Akatsuki, bad guys were trying to trying to capture all 9 tailed beasts. Each time one of those two things happened, it was like a pawn moving in Chess: An unrecoverable step towards the finish line. One Piece has an endgame, but it keeps inserting new hurdles in between Luffy and it. Every few arcs he reaches a new part of the grand line, even more dangerous than the last. At this point, he could go on forever with more and more dangerous islands. Bleach is the only one with no real endgame. They reached the last one, so they just created a new one, and will keep doing so until Kubo dies.

Any other comics that rival EGS in the realm of intentional/unintentional fetish fuel? Is it even possible?

Actually, its possible for him to see te fact that his son dont stick to one form as some sort os escapism, or evidence that he is not really confortable with who he really is. We already know that part of Ted fixation came from emotional scars anyway.

I used to read this back in the mid 2000s or whatever, but I doubt I could ever get back into it. It suffers from one of my biggest pet peeves in comics: Way too many fucking characters. Made even worse by each character having multiple forms/genders/whatever the fuck.

I just find the same problem I have with a lot of his big idea stories: why the fuck should I give a shit about this dumb thing and her lovequest? I had no idea who these characters were until this point, I don't care about them, nothing about her is interesting.

Meanwhile you have two plots that have been on the backburner for years that people actually want to see (Lord Tedd and the Sirleck/Magus stuff) that'll never get mentioned again as Dan seems to be in no rush to move towards any of that.

The way it was set up made it seem like that story was getting resolved in New and Old Flames, but we haven't seen anything from them anywhere.

Unless Dan is gonna pull some dumb tweest like Magus took over Elliot's body during the summer, than this story was really poorly thought out. Which actually would explain why Nanase was unable to summon a fairy to him come to think of it
