What's your favorites Spirou albums and authors guys ?

For me it's Franquin > Tome & Janry > Yoann & Vehlmann. Fournier and Munuera are equally terrible.
Favorite story is probably Fear on the tail & Valley of the banished. Great adventure, and an amazing look at the Spirou-Fantasio relationship.

Really enjoying this. I've always been vaguely aware of Spirou but never really bothered to pay much attention before. So educate an ignorant rosbif. Tell me about Spirou. Why does he wear the bellboy uniform?

More importantly, which books are good and available in English?

She's a communist, Anon, with loyalities to international communism. There were plenty of nationalist Jews in pretty much every european nation that supported jewish emancipation and the Zionists entertained at least three schemes of creating a national home for Jews somewhere on the planet.

>>77324177
>Why does he wear the bellboy uniform?
Because it's his trademark. He doesn't wear it in most of the Tome/Jarry stories from the 90s and 00s, when they're on long-distance infiltrations through communist China or when they're destroying a third world country's military.

Bump for recommendations and in the hope the thread survives for OP to continue.
>>
>>77322933
Not a suggestion on the translation, but the way you're typesetting.

In some bubbles, you're using a slightly different colour to the rest of the white, so you have a visible box.

The black you're using on the text is too black for the rest of the comic, consider making it more of a grey.

A lot of the text isn't properly vertically centred in the bubbles.

But thanks a lot for your work, anon.
>>
>>77326819
Will try tomorrow.
>>
>>77325232
How big as L'Internationale? And how did it try to get workers from different countries to cooperate? It must've been a nightmare.
>>
>>77327316
An "International" of sorts still exists, in a way. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_International

For a time in the early 20th Century, international unions such as the IWW held quite a lot of power. However since the end of WWII, capitalism (particularly American aspirational propaganda) has done a good job of destroying global solidarity of low-paid workers in favour of convincing them competition rather than cooperation is better for them as individuals. Selfishness has been encouraged and for the moment at least, workers are not united. The fact the left seems to always suffer from infighting (which is easy for opponents to exploit) probably didn't help matters.

But this isn't /pol/ or /his/, so I'll shut up now. Would really like some Spirou recommendations but it doesn't look like he has many fans here.
>>
>>77327730
Want some Spirou recommendations? Any Spirou from Tome & Janry except "la machine Ă  rĂŞves" (it's a special one) and any Spirou from Franquin would be a good start.

Read Z comme Zorglub and then L'ombre du Z. Basically all the Franquin ones are enjoyable. Maybe read these in the French publication order. And then jump directly to the ones from Tome & Janry. You can read their last one but do not consider it cannon. And be ready for the female characters from the Tome & Janry ones.

>wtf guys ?
As I explained in a Tintin thread, most comics published before the 70s didn't feature much women or fanservice because of our informal equivalent to the comics code. And comics that started before the 70s tended to keep it that way by tradition for long after (notably Asterix, Lucky Luke and Spirou).

Le Petit Spirou is a separate series that started in the 90s, which were pretty heavier in terms of fanservice. See: Melusine.

Hey don't diss Franquin, M'oiselle Jeanne was pretty hot.

There's no canon fanservice, true. However Franquin has made a couple doodles of Gaston and Jeanne fucking.

There's also a Lucky Luke page where he drinks/smokes/picks up one of the cancan girls in a saloon. Jolly complains about him always smelling of whiskey and cheap perfume in the last panel.
I think it was Morris that made it, or maybe it was part of a tribute collection.

I know, but the Tome & Janry run started in the middle of the '80s. Even for such established characters as Spirou and Fantasio, they could have got away with far worse.
It's just that they wanted to make a lewd comic with a kid protagonist, Titeuf style.

So, you like M'oiselle Jeanne ?

>It's just that they wanted to make a lewd comic with a kid protagonist, Titeuf style.

Le Petit Spirou pretty much CREATED the lewd kids comic genre, it really wasn't a thing before. Titeuf and other copycats came later.

No way are M&M and Fournier equally bad. Fournier may not have been great, but Morvan & Munuera almost killed off the seires.

Anyway:

Franquin > Tome & Janry > Yoann & Vehlmann > Fournier > Nic & Cauvin >>>>>>>>> Morvan & Munuera

This confused me too a bit.

For those who don't realize this, this comic was written in the 00s. It is only SET in 1939.

So, now that story is completed, I was thinking about translating another beast: Delirius from Philippe Druillet.
It will be way harder, and no engilsh version exist as far as I know.
What do you think, are you interested in it?
Or maybe another comic?

No.
Nowaday, Spirou keep having different authors.
Just take a look at that:
issue 114 : Le Tombeau des Champignac
Story Yann and Fabrice Tarrin
art Fabrice Tarrin

issue 115 : Le Journal d'un ingénu
Story and art Émile Bravo

issue 116 : Le Groom vert-de-gris
Story Yann
art Olivier Schwartz

See more here (only in french)

Basically, those albums were just one shot.

So it is a happy ending, from a certain point of view.

I too really enjoyed this OP and would be grateful for any other BD translations you can provide. I am very partial to stories set in Europe in this period of history, but I'm open to being introduced to something completely new and different as well.

Perhaps when you start a new thread for whatever you translate next, point out that it's newly translated. It will probably help draw more people in.

Honestly this album of Spirou is more similar to Tintin than to other Spirou, so maybe tintin if you haven't read them.
When you read Eurocomics, I'd advise to read them in original order of publication. Not that it matters too much in most cases, but there's no reason not to, since there's a very limited amount of albums for each series.
What genre do you want, senpai?

Lots and lots.
If you like a couple of buddies going on adventures, Tintin, Blake & Mortimer, Lefranc, Gil Jourdan, Bob Morane,... ; De cape & de crocs (17th century setting) too, but since it's fairly tongue in cheek you lose a lot with the fan translation.
And though Blacksad is hispano-french, >>77392917 is right on recommending it, it's a masterpiece.
