I was watching Dave the Barbarian's LatAm Spanish dub and I have noticed that there are lots of things that Disney now doesn't allows today, words like "stupid", "holy" and "god".

I remember I used to watch reruns of Jackie Chan Adventures on Telemundo on Sunday mornings years and years ago. It was always interesting to watch a cartoon, know the episode nearly by heart because of endless repeats on English-language channels, and then watch it in another language.

I also once watched a Spanish-dubbed episode of Dragon Ball Z on there once. I can't remember if it was Telemundo or Univision that I watched a Godzilla movie dubbed in Spanish... that was the coolest broadcast ever. Never heard a Godzilla movie in Spanish before then.

When it comes to anime I haven't even watched anything that isn't among the popularity level of AoT, YGO, Pokémon or Dragon Ball, in other words I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop, but even if the Spanish dub for it sucks the general consensus is that America sucks when it comes to Anime dubs, while LA is a hit or miss I guess, is it because all the Animes are dubbed in 4Kids? Well, 4Kids is out of business, but yeah. Them, Saban and Funimation did most of the English dubs that weren't further outsourced to Canada (and their group of 10 voice actors).

The reason most US English dubs of anime suck is because the studios that actually dub anime work EXCLUSIVELY in non-union voice actors. That way they don't have to pay benefits or royalties or anything like that.

So the actors are all really cheap and the quality of their work shows it.

On the reverse, the rare US dub that employs union actors are typically top notch (Disney dubs of Ghibli flicks).

Anime just ranks so low in the US that we always resort to discount voice actors like Sean Schemmel.

Not as much as you think, the first batch of episodes (I think it was the first season) dubbed in Mexico were the same as the american version, but after that the show got so popular that they started translating it directly from japanese.
This is why the Sailor Scouts and all the characters introduced in that season have the american names, while newer characters kept their original names

Same thing happened to Dragon Ball, they started translating from an american version (from Harmony Gold IIRC) and renamed it to "Zero y el Dragon Mágico" wich very few people remember, this version went as far as the Red Ribbon Army, but when somebody in the dubbing team went to Europe, they realized just how popular Dragon Ball was, once they came back to Mexico they demanded a complete retranslation of everything that was done up until that point, this time doing justice to the original material.

The DiC edits only lasted the first two seasons of the English version in the first place. Keeping that influence for at least an entire season (and we're talking 45 episodes here), and having that subsequently affect the characters introduced by it, is still hardly a small deal in comparison.

Hell, the effect the English version had on the Latin isn't discussed any where near as much as it should be, especially given it's likely responsible for many of the most positive and fondly remembered changes. Spic Serena ends up a richer, more endearing character for taking from both the original Jap and Eng dubs.
