There's 3 stages to diaz

Some of his really old work is actually pretty good. There's no central storyline and it's all very bizarre.

Then he starts to get shitty when he settles down with his cast of recurring characters (kimiko, the twins).

When he gets rid of the twins, it's pure shit. Not because the twins were that good, it's just that he apparently wanted to write a super serious story about kimiko. I think Dark Science - the storyline he mentions in the OP - is the start of this phase.

Andrew Hussie had a period when he was totally up his own ass, at about the peak of Homestuck's popularity. So some time after it had begun its descent into shit.

Lately he's had pretty much nothing to do with the fanbase, though, he closed his tumblr and hasn't done a Q&A or anything in years. Guess he got tired of it all.

It's hard to say if artists who manage to not get into terrible interactions with their fans are a minority or not, because those artists who refrain from spewing their every thought on twitter or Tumblr and instead stay in the shadows are boring to discuss, which is why they're forgotten and and everyone only notice the outspoken ones. There's a lot of comics that I read and enjoy but barely even remember the name of the author because they don't scream LOOK AT MEEE!!!! between every update.

The body isn't too bad, if very stylized. The problem is in the face - it's very awkwardly proportioned, and would work much better for a character like Toad from X-men or something rather than on the main character, she just looks too stupid and lumpy to draw much appeal.

This is a very quick and crap edit, but giving her slightly larger pupils and just moving her features down her face a little already does wonders, imo.

The problem there is that most cartoons still start with a good fundamental base. You can clearly see they have a consistent anatomy, even when exaggerated for effect. SG doesn't, even remotely. Her features float like pool toys around her face and her body tends to do much the same. It doesn't look "cartoony" it looks like an attempt at a cartoon with no knowledge of how to construct a human body.

Take the two examples posted previously. Even with Bugs and Elastigirl, you can see a coherent structure to their form. Elastigirl never deforms in ways not expected of a rubber character. She also doesn't lose that underlying structure I was talking about. No matter how she gets exaggerated it still fits because the artists at Pixar understand basic construction of form. The same is true of Bugs. No matter how often the character deformed or was twisted, smashed, or turned to goop, it still had solid fundamentals. SG does not.

Shockingly, even in the world of cartooning, some things just don't work. Hell, you could argue it was going for an "ugly" style, but then I'd point you at Crumb. I'm not a huge fan, but his style is downright pungent at times and yet, again, it still looks correct albeit not necessarily appealing.

To be fair that's a bit simplistic from what I've heard about Phil he's an ass who did shitty things, but I didn't exactly read much into that.
But it's not as though the Internet can't be full of assholes who explode for no real reason.
