Taking a peek at Aaron Diaz's twitter the first thing I see is this, and I swear I remember seeing him write this same self-congratulatory tweet many times before.
I ask you: are there any other webcomic artists who are constantly praising themselves as much as Diaz is? I don't remember seeing that even from the ones who DO have some merit to be proud of.
Jon Rosenberg of "Multiverse" thinks very highly of his comic as a platform for commending on the racism of StarTrek TOG.
But he is a SJW troll so you can't take his shit seriously.
Dawid Willis had a pretty self-congratulatory period after his first couple of paywall porn comics, proudly boasting on twitter about how great he is at drawing erotica and calling himself a porn lord. He's not exactly humble otherwise either, but considering how ridiculously boner-killingly poorly drawn the smut was his smugness over it really stood out.
winston "constellation of trolls" rowntree comes to mind
but i don't think anyone comes close to diaz, he's the absolute apex of webcomic narcissism. i can't believe he still has the balls to lecture people on acceptable use of cheesecake
pretty sure he was joking about that
it was lame and not funny at all but still
Met him in real life at a convention. The undeserved smugness just radiates off of him. I was a fan of his fantasy comic at the time, knowing nothing else about him, so I went to get an autograph from him and the artist. He was such a jackass and so put off about signing something for a fan that combined with his undeserved ego he turned me off of his comic right then and there.
Or writing a story. He can just not stop tweeting "advice" about how to construct a good story and write relateable characters while picking apart other people's work. Which is ridiculous when the only good thing about his own magnum opus is the (cheesecakey) art.
Sometimes I like to think that "Aaron Diaz" is nothing but this big performance by some talented artist who wants to see how the public would react to the most smug, self-centered, lazy, "feminist" artist character.
If he were a character in a fictional story he'd be pointed out as the obviously unrealistic strawman, he's just that ridiculous of a person. I'd hate to have him on my side of any argument.
The whole Ashley Burch lust he has going on is very unhealthy.
It's one thing to obsess over some woman that turned him down, but to draw her with limbs cut off as fetish fuel with his own self insert following her like a puppy is freaky. You just know the balding beard goober has serious issues. Apparently he has a deep seated hatred for fit alpha types too, notice his comics are always featuring thin effeminate men.
Why has KC Green become so shitty?
>character revels in crushing depression for five panels
>sixth panel is a fart joke
>GENIUS, HUMOR HAS BEEN SUBVERTED ONCE AGAIN
Anime Club was so good, I even bought the book.
Inflated patreon that far exceeds the artist's skill, talent, or ability.
That is success for webcomics.
Most of them are cunts because when someone's good at drawing they don't have to pay their dues, they get praised and fawned over just for drawing, so they tend to think they're superior to everyone. They never had to work for praise. In most of these webcomic cases, at least, and I can't think of an exception.
>live in poverty
>make webcomic drawings as therapy for massive years-long depression
>starting my own webcomic on top of doing other work
>just want to make a better life for myself
/co/ if I ever make it big I want you to keep me in my place because even though I'm poor I don't want to be an Aaron Diaz.
>publicly declaring your work to be "really good" after personally rereading it
I don't care how good the work is, this is never not a smug fucking thing to do. I don't even think it's a bad work (it might even be good, I guess), but this is just so masturbatory.
Christ, how divorced from reality do you have to be to not have some part of your brain stop you from doing this? "Hold up son, I think we might be going a little far here. Maybe just say you're proud of the work or something."
This is why people can't be trusted with shit like twitter. They just stop self reflecting and just spew every thought out into the world without sanity checking it in their brain.
So it's based on nothing then? Kimiko is a cartoon character. She could look like a million different people. You need something more than "same haircut and female" to base an entire accusation on.
I mean, I hate the guy too, but lets make fun of him for the stupid shit he's actually said and done, there's no need to make up stupid rumors.
Don't worry, anon. The fact you're even reflecting on this is a good sign.
There are plenty of good artists who don't have unchecked egos. In fact, many have the opposite problem, where they have easily rustled jimmies when it comes to their perception of their skills and work. But they're still good artists with good work and plenty of fans.
Just fight the good fight every day and remember to always try to be better.
>takes so cunting long to write a chapter he needs to go through HIS OWN archive just to remember it
>still sucks himself off, and has the nerve to glance upward at you mid way and coyly ask if he's doing it well
>mfw that pic
I can figure out what's going on in that pic... I just have no idea HOW it happened in the first place.
The rumor's been around for ages.
It's particularly hilarious when you consider how often the creep googles his own name and sometimes comes to /co/. There was a previous thread where some "anon" mysteriously lost his shit and carried on an autistic argument against the rumor being true.
...So naturally it must be true, if only for the comedic value of baldy beard boy's tantrums.
I really do want it to be true because it's fucking hilarious, I just wish we had more to go on. But I guess it's the sort of thing that can never really be proven unless he admits it.
Yeah that's the shitty part. Especially when their comic is shit and they don't upload their content (if you can even call the short work content) consistently. I mean even if they can draw really well I still want to read something interesting or atleast funny. If I want good-looking panels I'd rather look up some web artist.
Appreciate it. Hilariously enough, my brother's nickname for me is "shit" so it'll feel like family if you do.
Thanks, I will. Obamacare actually kinda came through and I got depression medicine so maybe one day it'll fully kick in and I can just make stuff just to make it rather than to push away the crazy thoughts.
>maybe one day it'll fully kick in
It can take a while for this, so if medication is the way you wanna go make sure you stick at it. Can you not get psychotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy on Obamacare? They did way more for me than medication ever did, and there's no point in putting all your eggs in one basket.
Yeah my primary care physician that I was assigned when I enrolled made a referral for therapy, I guess it's just up to the system how it's handled. I have something called an "intake" in the coming weeks to see where I fit, I guess.
There's 3 stages to diaz
Some of his really old work is actually pretty good. There's no central storyline and it's all very bizarre.
Then he starts to get shitty when he settles down with his cast of recurring characters (kimiko, the twins).
When he gets rid of the twins, it's pure shit. Not because the twins were that good, it's just that he apparently wanted to write a super serious story about kimiko. I think Dark Science - the storyline he mentions in the OP - is the start of this phase.
Andrew Hussie had a period when he was totally up his own ass, at about the peak of Homestuck's popularity. So some time after it had begun its descent into shit.
Lately he's had pretty much nothing to do with the fanbase, though, he closed his tumblr and hasn't done a Q&A or anything in years. Guess he got tired of it all.
CLOSELY interacting with their fans is one thing, but for a long while he actually had a pretty good thing going with them. People would ask him shit, and he'd either give a funny joke answer or he'd go on a long, cool explanation of shit. I sort of miss it.
Obviously, creators who have too much to do with their fans can get shit on for it, look at how tumblr turned on the Ava's Demon chick.
Me neither, I gave up after a few chapters, It doesn't really draw you in and each dialog between characters is an excuse for him to explain yet another scientific fact that is too disconnected from the situation they're in. It's like the characters carry some encyclopedia and recite some weird fact out of the book.
Oh I don't know, I stopped paying attention. That first storyline, dark science, I think it's about a super advanced ai robot, the singularity, some other bullshit. I haven't read it in years.
It's really not worth trying to understand, though.
Incidentally, if you want to check out the (actually good) webcomic that Diaz was trying to ape, when he first started out, it's called A Lesson is Learned But the Damage is Irreversible.
Diaz is a shitbag and the only think he's ever made that was any good was the philosophy D&D comic parody thing. That's literally it. Every other thing is just him masturbating with a Cintiq.
>I used to like Diaz and started working on my drawing because of him ages ago
There are plenty of artists who can manage the delicate balance of fan interaction and not being a shit. No where near all of them or even a majority, I fear, but there are good artists who do good work and can still manage to communicate with fans like rational people and not descend into self wanking and outrage.
Ashley Cope is one of those, and routinely answers questions about her comic or just shoots the shit with fans. She also has a dedicated tumblr for the comic, separate from her more personal tumblr. Which, frankly, seems like a must for the modern internet.
The guy who does Endtown is pretty great too, when /co/ did a bunch of pictures for his birthday and sent them to him, he sent back a picture of his own thanking them. And he also answers questions about stuff too without spoiling plotlines, pretty decent guy all around.
Here are the 3 stages of diaz.
Stage 1: not bad, if a bit bizarre
Stage 2: pretty bad, very pseudointellgectual
Its weird that I actually finding myself needing to explain this but here we are...
What. the. fuck. do you think twitter is for?
Its nothing but an advertising tool for self-promotion. Some of you seem to have got into your head after seeing some funny tweets out there that such is what the medium is for, its a free entertainment platform for you and self-promotion is an atypical faux pas usage, but you've got it exactly backwards.
Do you people look at tv ads and are baffled why, say, Pepsi is talking about its own product and not promoting health insurance or weather-resistant house siding? Of course not, its a pepsi ad for pepsi. In the exact same light, you're choosing to read an ad for an artist then wondering what the fuck the artist is advertising himself for. Kindly remove your head from your ass.
The DA artist comments explain everything:
>OKay... To answer such questions:
>YES, this will be Cat and Tanya's child (or children).
>YES, Cat R Waul is the biological father.
>YES, as a miricle, Cat impregnated Tayna.
>YES, involving sex duh (I'll leave it up to your imagination, or my brother, of what went on in the bedroom)
>As from the film Mr & Mrs Smith the scale is definitely a 10.
>YES, Tayna will have a safe birth.
>I also like the triplets idea...
>YES, the children will be generally mouse form and size (with a few cat features different on each child) One will have cat eyes!
Stage 3: full retard, complete with a self-insert
That still doesn't explain the logistics of the impregnation! Not that I WANT to know, but you can't just throw shit like that and be coy with the actual explanation
he'a not even close to being talented, he's just technically correct in some painting techniques, his anatomy is amateurish at best and his storytelling is just disgusting
It's hard to say if artists who manage to not get into terrible interactions with their fans are a minority or not, because those artists who refrain from spewing their every thought on twitter or Tumblr and instead stay in the shadows are boring to discuss, which is why they're forgotten and and everyone only notice the outspoken ones. There's a lot of comics that I read and enjoy but barely even remember the name of the author because they don't scream LOOK AT MEEE!!!! between every update.
Even with the really successful webcomics I could probably find just as many unremarkable artists as the ones who have gone batshit insane from their popularity, but they're hard to remember off hand because of their relative grey man approach to their success.
Nigga, you should have used the one where Aaron Diaz's self insert takes off his shirt and is fit and handsome.
Also, I love that Kim changes in accordance with Diaz's changing waifus. He can't even keep her character consistent. She's just whatever his current ideal woman is.
It's not just webcomic artists, the artist of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is pretty far up her own ass as well.
Though that's pretty much a bad webcomic being actually printed by Marvel.
The first storyline is fairly simple, Robot from the future goes back in time and is followed by Futre Amish people who want to stop Kim from becoming Cyberdyne.
Dark Science is about Kim going to her father's Metropolitan, as in modeled after Metropolis, and then some stupid bullshit happens and Kim and Diaz go off to discover the secret of Dark Science, which is likened to Plato's allegory of the cave, alluded to in the most clumsy, paraphrasing of a wikipedia article ever.
Also, he had the gall to call the second book Purgatorio, because he deserves to do that.
In what universe has "Just reading my own stuff, and wow am I great" after critisizing other people ever been good self-promotion that doesn't make you look like a delusional egoshit? No-one is saying twitter shouldn't be used for self-promotion, we're saying that the image Diaz is painting of himself is about the worst kind he could possibly do.
You should be able to realize this unless you're literally Diaz.
The terminologies are just thrown together haphazardly, if you're not familiar with the concepts you might think this is smart writing but its the exact opposite.
PA's take on hollywood internet lingo is the exact equivalent of this comic's take on philosophy.
On one hand they have basically the same face to the point where it's uncanny. Ash has got a distinct look to her
On the other hand he can only draw two types of female faces so that may just be caused by his own limitations
He disn't say Diaz was talented, he said he likes to think of the whole Dresden Codak fiasco and Aaron Diaz as a fake experiment puppeteered by some mastermind artist to make the most ridiculously enraging comic-to-artist combination ever. Imagine, say, Tracy Butler, secret millionaire artist, actually being the person behind DCodak, doing it all for the lulz.
That would be funnier than the reality that this is a real person who gets paid 5 grand a month to draw one page of... that.
>Oh but anon, you just dislike it because she isn't fapbait.
Forgot to include the tweet of the writer of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, but here's a link https://twitter.com/ryanqnorth/status/583956137625587712
>I like to imagine them throwing away Maus, outraged, all "THIS IS THE WORST FURRY COMIC I'VE EVER READ, IT'S BARELY EVEN EROTIC"
This honestly and with no hint of sarcasm, looks like pure shit.
My younger sister draws better than this and she follows an amateur drawing class in middle school for only a year. So this low quality nonsense actually gets printed by Marvel?
One art anon showed that Diaz's style is incredibly easy to emulate. You just need a few brushes and to work at enormous sizes.
It looks pretty, unless you know anything about anatomy, but it's not exactly that skillful.
Let's bring out this old chestnut, shall we?
Honestly that tweet is kind of right. A lot of the hate I see is from people desperately editing SG's face so it's cuter and more fappable, along with her waistline. Hell, that cover drawn by that one japanese artist keeps getting posted over and over because it's closer to the anime fap bait people want out of the book.
It's all the dumber because plenty of artists can make pretty characters, ugly characters and emotive characters, and/or ones that go between all three depending on the circumstances.
Oglaf in particular has a great range of faces and different features, without going full retard (unless it's for a joke)
Wow, that giant shot of Kim in her skivvies is so empowering.
Also, did you ever notice that kim is in various states of undress almost all the time?
I mean, I love fanservice, but when you claim it's for equity, it's retarded.
Holy shit, how did he think this was actually okay?
>SG's face so it's cuter
It's not a matter of cuter, it's a matter of not legitimately retarded.
Also, if you'd have read the threads more closely, you'd see the various edits where her face is edited into one that's better drawn, but still plain.
I remember reading some fantastic tumblr-post where a girl very politely tore him a new one, pointing out that while he could and should draw anything he wanted to, his female characters were constantly in states of undress, and even when clothed they were constantly being posed in ways where emphasis was based on their tits and asses. And that that's probably not a very good way for an artist who claims to be a feminist and attacks other artists for drawing sexy stuff ought to be behaving.
>Honestly that tweet is kind of right.
The fuck it is, it's just used as an excuse to deflect criticism of the art.
>Hell, that cover drawn by that one japanese artist keeps getting posted over and over because it's closer to the anime fap bait people want out of the book.
Again get bent. The variant cover is cute and far from "fap bait."
>>takes so cunting long to write a chapter he needs to go through HIS OWN archive just to remember it
Come on Anon, he wasn't spending that time writing. He was obviously beating off to his previous work.
>There was a previous thread where some "anon" mysteriously lost his shit and carried on an autistic argument against the rumor being true.
Got a link?
Maybe if he didn't have such terribly incomprehensible panel layouts you wouldn't be so confused.
>Its nothing but an advertising tool for self-promotion.
Or comedy, or inane bullshit, or in the case of one I particularity like, sci-fi/fantasy stories. Shoehorning a communication medium into a narrow definition because that's what some people use ti for is asinine.
By your logic, webcomic sites and personal blogs exist as nothing but advertising tools.
Self-promotion isn't a fax-pas, but public auto-fellatio
is. Which is what that was.
I know, right? For all his talk about art dude can't layout a page worth a fuck.
This one? Well, it's part of it.
Aaron Diaz actually is apparently aware of what competent panel design is, but he thinks he's above it.
You know how they say, to learn the rules before you bend them? Well, Diaz thinks that means that you have to break them to be a master.
There are comic artists who can eschew classic panel design and do it well, but Diaz is not one of them, but he fails to understand this particular fault, as he does all his personal faults.
He's like a legitimate child. Nothing is his fault.
Follow Diaz's comics and you follow all the fetishes he gathered over the years and crammed into one character.
So far in Kimiko you have:
- Asian/half Asian
- short hair with white streak
- amputation and cyborg limbs
- scars/unnatural lines on skin
I wonder if she'll get a cyborg dick when Diaz discover futa.
>like Squirrel Girl is supposed to be
Squirrel girl used to look like a fucking troll.
Honestly she should really be plain. I'd love to see more variations in comic book characters. I feel like the art in the SG book COULD be that, but it's so rushed and sloppy for whatever reason. We even see that the artist is capable of something more polished from his personal work.
>Follow Diaz's comics and you follow all the fetishes he gathered over the years and crammed into one character
That's the thing I particularly hate about Diaz.
He's essentially a fanfiction writer, a bad one at that, but since he possesses a modicum of talent, it's excused.
Like you and >>71139087 said, Kim can't even be consistent with her characterization. She's just his waifu.
I swear to christ I had that thing properly filed somewhere.
Suffice to say, the only point of it was to show some anon had some really bizarre ideas of how panels should be organized, and considered the Dresden Codak page superior to the "confusing" Gunnerkrigg Court one.
>Honestly she should really be plain
I agree, but she doesn't need to look like a disabled person.
Someone made an edit where she has a person's face, but is still plain. Does anyone have it?
If she spent less time making passive-aggressive tweets and more time not making her mouths look like ass, then maybe I'd stop criticising her on the internet
>Squirrel girl used to look like a fucking troll.
But at least she didn't have fetal alcohol syndrome like she apparently does now.
That Downsie face makes me cringe.
Either the artist is INCAPABLE of drawing attractive people or actively decides not to.
>Squirrel girl used to look like a fucking troll.
Yes, and no one liked that.
She still looks plain in the variant cover. It's possible for a character with a plain character design to still be cute. Look at how many people get hard over Velma.
Even if you took it into full moeblob territory I'd prefer it over her looking literally retarded.
>Either the artist is INCAPABLE of drawing attractive people or actively decides not to.
Ding! ding! ding! You are correct the first time! All of her art looks that unsightly.
There's a Dean Koontz book that I like, called 'Hideaway'. In this book there's a character, and he's an author of several novels. And the fact that he reads his entire body of work at least once per year and finds that the quality improves each time he reads them is supposed to indicate that he's a total asshole.
Oh look, here it is. Not 3 minutes after giving up on the last look. Always fucking happens, I swear.
Generally draws unappealing mouths, and doesn't really seem to have an idea of how the face moves and contracts.
It feels a lot like the artist tries to break rules they don't understand in the first place.
He'd probably lose his shit.
I swear to christ, we've reached the point that retards call any art that isn't hideous, even if it lacks anything approaching sexualized imagery, "fap bait".
Squirrel Girl is fully covered in the image and you can barely see her body at all, her hips are obscured by cake and squirrels, her chest is jacket-covered and obscured by her arm, her face is kinda dorky-looking and she has the grandest of buck teeth. The only thing you could even remotely call "fap bait" is that she does look female and isn't a land whale. And thats the new barrier of entry for artwork being rejected as nothing but bottled sexism.
I bet dumbasses look at that image and call it "healthism" for showing nuts, fruits, and vegetables - its obviously fat-shaming in action.
Nuh-uh, we can see her sexy, sexy collarbones. And presumably she has sexy legs too, only we sadly can't see them because the bench and cake cover them up. TOTAL fap-bait. Anyone who hates Unbeatable Squirrel girl is a misogynist who despises any woman he can't fap to. There is no valid reason to criticize it.
Upon looking at it while I was digging it up, I realized the other person was following the spacial layouts of the page, rather than the bubbles. You can see it based on the unbroken like they take with GC page, clearly confused by the lack of distinct paneling, but the clearly delineated and broken lines they take on DC. It's still sort of wrong even on that account, because you're supposed to follow Antimony's hair in the traditional, english reading fashion being your guide.
Still kind of insane. When this happens is usually when you take a step back and sanity check your thinking.
No, the original red lines appear to be from the Bad Webcomics Wiki. The yellow lines are from some nameless anon in an older Diaz thread who took issue with the original not actually properly showing how one would "naturally" read these pages. And thus they decided to show us all how your eye would naturally read the page.
>I don't see what the fuss is.
It's very poorly drawn.
>Do you guys get this triggered whenever Marvel and DC comics stray one iota from the "house style"?
I don't even read capeshit.
She looks fucking terrible. It's not a matter of her looking plain or not-cute. She seriously looks like a retarded dude. Her head is far bigger than the rest of her body. It's disproportionate. She's got disproportionately huge tube legs and her entire lower half in general is off scale from her upper half. Look at her pencil thin wrists and forearms compared to her gigantic ass and legs and head.
Shit is just bad.
It's sort of like a Big Bang Theory style of writing.
It lets people who don't have actual knowledge on the subjects think they are experiencing them, which in turn makes them feel smart or part of the culture or however the fuck you wanna call it.
To be honest I do almost agree with him on the GC one. The blue-white lines with the red circles inside sorta distract my eye and I find myself having to force myself to focus and read it properly instead of just letting my gaze wander where it naturally heads.
His Codak one is a load of shit though; it's such a clusterfuck.
I know right? And this rabbit doesn't even look like a real rabbit at all! What a fucking shitty artist. How do these guys keep getting work??
You're right, it's a fucking miracle we haven't just made everything stick figures. They're a lot faster to draw and animate to boot.
The body isn't too bad, if very stylized. The problem is in the face - it's very awkwardly proportioned, and would work much better for a character like Toad from X-men or something rather than on the main character, she just looks too stupid and lumpy to draw much appeal.
This is a very quick and crap edit, but giving her slightly larger pupils and just moving her features down her face a little already does wonders, imo.
Actually, the original "plain" design was
allegedlymostly due to Ditko half-assing all his work-for-hire in the 80's, because he felt that him working on anything that wasn't Mr. A was beneath him.
Her calves are bigger than her thighs. Hell, I think they're bigger than her torso
Erica, stop sockpuppeting on 4chan and work on your mouths
>actually defending Squirrel Girl
Come on m8
>it's a fucking miracle we haven't just made everything stick figures
AT is damned close.
Even just the pupils are an improvement. Tiny little dot eyes in a sea of white is the animated convention for a crazy person.
Good job on fixing her hundred-yard stare
>following basic anatomy & proportions is SOOOOOOOOO subjective!
My line of thinking is this - assume ALL webcomic artists are assholes unless shown otherwise.
Even if you do find some that aren't, you'll see them to be the exceptions to the rule.
I understand now.
The artist has no fucking clue how the features fit on a face.
To them a face is just a white void that features are randomly placed in.
It's like Escher got drunk and decided to do portraits.
Her eyes are now located roughly in the middle of her face (which is where they belong on living people), not eighty-percent up it.
I enlarged the pupils a bit and made them look in the same direction instead of being creepy, blank and wall-eyed. Clearly the standards for what constitutes anime have slipped.
Messing with normal human proportions? That's a sign of a shit artist. I mean look at this garbage, her ankles are stick thin and her thighs are grotesquely large. Not to mention her giant bobble head. Nobody has a head that big! Can you believe this was actually released in theaters?
>it's a cartoon, which means I don't have to follow basic anatomy!
I'm serious, Erica, work on your damn mouths already.
The noses, lips and cheekbones you get in the faces do come across as desperate Disney-esque stuff. Or at least copying Phobs
Look at those various "anime redraws" to see what I mean.
There are many reasons /co/ doesn't tire of Diaz-bashing. That is one of them.
>My line of thinking is this - assume ALL webcomic artists are assholes unless shown otherwise
>Even if you do find some that aren't, you'll see them to be the exceptions to the rule.
I quoted this with the intention of arguing against you but after trying to come up with an argument I concede. You're right
Why should he? People gonna take the bait anyway. He trolls the same way Diaz works. Feed them shit and they come back for seconds, no need for quality.
For some reason, that reminds me of this.
The way the features are just sort of swimming aimlessly around on a face with no real structure.
>it's a cartoon, which means I don't have to follow basic anatomy!
No, it means not everything needs to follow LOOMIS 100% if it doesn't want to. Sure there's shit art done by people who have no idea what they're doing, but making fun of a piece because it "doesn't follow basic anatomy" is fucking retarded. More than half the shit you probably like doesn't follow basic anatomy. Hell, most comics use exaggerated "heroic" anatomy that looks nothing like the real thing with characters that are 8 heads tall instead of the real world average.
tl;dr stop pretending you know shit about art because you clearly don't
Oh wow, there goes all my sympathy for her.
Yeah like that edit of Ramos' Wolverine was to make him easier to fap to.
>reading my old stuff
>wow I am great
>this is something not said by any artist ever
Diaz probably has transcended his humanity a while ago. Sadly, his ascendency to a digital intelligence stopped at spambot-level because our technology doesn't support higher forms of AI as of yet.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but Sailor Moon is in there too.
Cal Arts and the Disney Princesses are the big one though. You are correct.
The thing about the "Tumblr" style is that it is hugely varied within its samey looking style.
It's like anime, you can tell an anime's an anime despite the fact that they don't all look the exact same. Same goes for Tumblr, that while it is all derived from the same general sources, the artists manage to adapt them into different combinations while still looking homogenous.
Diaz's panel orientation is apparently a feat of skill on his part. A skill which he doesn't possess at the level he thinks.
A similar thing can be seen in the Latin Poets, who were skilled enough to pull of such feats; they'd use the nature of Latin to make convoluted page long sentences which weren't clear until the last word.
Gimme a sec. Ok.
Bugs Bunny is a well executed stylized design. Even though his proportions aren't "ideal" or anything, he remains appealing and nothing jumps out as being overtly wrong. Even though he has tube legs, they have clear joints without the need to breaks style by resorting to obvious knees. From this model sheet, it's really easy to tell that the artist had a clear understanding of posing, gesture, and even anatomy.
Moen doesn't. Her anatomy varies wildly from sketch to sketch, and facial features seem to slide around. Consistency of the mark of actual skill, and it can be found all over Bugs' model sheet - the consistency is rock solid. Moen's isn't. Giruhiru's cover isn't more appealing because it's cuter - it's more appealing because it's more technically sound. Despite having much less contrast when you compare the two - >>71139317
Giruhiru's is a better composition that's more dynamic overall. Moen relies on contrast because her composition is weak. She honestly seems like an artist who only got so far with fundamentals, to a "good enough" place. But as >>71139652 shows she is really very lacking.
Look at the art. Do you really think the artist knows how faces work, much less fingers?
It's a pinky. A really shittily drawn pinky. That's what you should take away from this. This artist is shit no matter what happened to that hand.
Funny that you should choose that to strawman at, because the artist of that picture obviously has.
There's stylization and then there's Erica Henderon's work on Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
there was a reason why she was a joke and part of a joke team like Great Lakes Avengers. She looked like shit and her powers were shit. Trying to make her mainstream has done nothing but kill her as a character
But it's not stylized. It's just a mishmash of poorly grasped anatomical notions. This >>71139873 is stylized, squirrel girl is a poor attempt at stylizing something the artist has nearly no grasp on.
Jesus, Anon, you are one step up from screaming It's my style on DA.
It's clearly stylized. That's the definition of the word. Whether or not it's done badly is a different story.
Personally I think her choice of shapes is fine in that one image here >>71139640, but she just lacks the technical skill to pull it off. Not to mention her consistency is super bad, so even if she did draw it nicely it would change panel to panel.
I think she's badly misreading the cues here. Anon will fap to ANYTHING, and a bunch of fuckers here actually have SG at waiful level. Mostly from the GLA appearances.
The fact that anon has to make such a heroic effort to fap to this shit should be a HUGE red flag.
>pretty sure he was joking about that
Self-awareness in David WIllis' mind is limited to "I realize toys I collect are actually made for children".
Basic anatomy WAS applied anon. It's not a blind crayon scribble. The artist knows what a human looks like and made changes accordingly. It's a design based on a human therefore it's a stylized human drawing. She could have done it badly, but there's no need to try to change the definition of a word just to shit on some artist you don't like, or because you don't want to lose an internet argument to a stranger.
>Basic anatomy WAS applied anon.
I disagree. Wholeheartedly, even. Anatomy is about the basic, underlying structures that make up the body. Moen doesn't seem to have good awareness of the structure of the human body and relies on shapes that seem alright rather than genuine anatomical knowledge. It's this lack of structural understanding that leads to the inconsistencies in her work.
the only style applied is random. nothing about it is consistent enough to claim that every panel isn't a blind scribble. It's a series of amorphous blobs shifting around all over the page.
Please stay out of arguments if you don't want to follow the comment chain. I was talking about one specific design she drew, not the comic as a whole. I agree the whole thing is a mess and she has problems with inconsistencies
I see the problem here is our different understanding of the term "basic anatomy". I'll concede to the fact that we're both not going to come to terms on this and say that yes the book isn't drawn very well, but I still don't find much objection to some of the designs the artist put forward for SG, as long as a better artist was hired to draw them.
>say that yes the book isn't drawn very well, but I still don't find much objection to some of the designs the artist put forward for SG, as long as a better artist was hired to draw them.
I'll agree to that. Also...I'm >>71140247
and that was my first post in this particular argument. I think >>71140267 is the one you've been arguing with all along.
>tfw site thinks my post is spam
>Tfw Solomon used to be so based
Why did he stop? Did he really turn SJW?
The problem there is that most cartoons still start with a good fundamental base. You can clearly see they have a consistent anatomy, even when exaggerated for effect. SG doesn't, even remotely. Her features float like pool toys around her face and her body tends to do much the same. It doesn't look "cartoony" it looks like an attempt at a cartoon with no knowledge of how to construct a human body.
Take the two examples posted previously. Even with Bugs and Elastigirl, you can see a coherent structure to their form. Elastigirl never deforms in ways not expected of a rubber character. She also doesn't lose that underlying structure I was talking about. No matter how she gets exaggerated it still fits because the artists at Pixar understand basic construction of form. The same is true of Bugs. No matter how often the character deformed or was twisted, smashed, or turned to goop, it still had solid fundamentals. SG does not.
Shockingly, even in the world of cartooning, some things just don't work. Hell, you could argue it was going for an "ugly" style, but then I'd point you at Crumb. I'm not a huge fan, but his style is downright pungent at times and yet, again, it still looks correct albeit not necessarily appealing.
What this guy said.
He did I'm afraid. Got bitten by one way back and now he prowls the alleys of tumblr like the rest of them. They say you're safe from them as long as you keep a clove of garlic next to your PC and don't invite them into your blogs. They also won't retweet any images over running water.
Damn, because he used to be so succinct, especially as he targeted the more popular webcomics.
>Diaz is an unreliable hack who probably puts more effort into masturbating than he does his webcomic. Since he'd have to beat off less than once a month for that to be false, it's a good assumption to make.
>That's really the only reason people come back to Dresden Codak. The unrealistic, "I wish she was real and mai waifu~" sentiment that its readers get when Kimiko flounces across the bizarre panel layout and fills the air with a wall of fucking text about how ridiculously Aspergian she is. If there weren't people on Wikipedia staunchly opposed to it, I guarantee you that there would be an article on her and this fucking awful webcomic ten times the size of the ones on Hitler, Stalin and Lex Luthor combined.
Funny how Codak also became a "feminist" straight after this though...and then flipped out when that guy made the comic simply ribbing him
There are so many artists so much better at it than him though.
I don't even know what's happening with this guy.
He should get more work and if he has it, I wish to read it.
It's pretty good aside from Spidey's head and mask. Looks like someone kicked it in or it's about to fall apart.
Ramos has this guy beaten in this department.
I think the problem with that Wolverine is that it's stiffly drawn.
If the artist understood the anatomy of the neck and how it compresses, the big neck could work.
What webcomic artists AREN'T up their own asses?
>Your Webcomic is Bad and You Should Feel Bad was 7 years ago.
Where does the time go?
Ashley Cope of Unsounded.
She visits here sometimes.
They're well aware of how shit they are but it's so much easier to deflect all that with the bullshit excuse that it's only disliked by nerds that can't fap to it. >>71139108 >>71139200
Easiest way to get white knights to defend your garbage on social media and some might even be tricked into buying the thing to show "support".
>Tfw if you had fame it would definitely go to your head
If I was Brad, I wouldn't be posting my *old* screencaps.
Can YOU read it all?
To this day I've never read the whole thing. Just the beginning and the punchline.
Well, there was this one time when tumblr did nearly drive him to suicide.
Predictably it was about girls having vaginas.
To be fair that's a bit simplistic from what I've heard about Phil he's an ass who did shitty things, but I didn't exactly read much into that.
But it's not as though the Internet can't be full of assholes who explode for no real reason. Like few days ago Cho makes some cheesecake, people made a big fucking deal out of it, earlier couple idiots misread two consenting adults having drunk sex and it's statutory, they call for Remender's job, few years ago Ex-DC employee critiques a Teen Titans cover, they get death threats and apparently hacking attempts.
Not to say being nice doesn't go a long way but it's not always that simple.
Yeah thanks, that was a great explanation.
I like how he draws chicks, wish he did some porn.
Oh most definitely, hopefully I'd just try to be a cheeky cunt about it and not an actual dick.
Like I'd love to be Grant Morrison tier, that seems like a lot of fun.
>Implying he genuinely was ready to kill himself
That post got him some much-needed sympathy, and kinda exposed SJW dickheads.
It wasn't exactly like it was his fault, all he did was joke after watching Man of Steel that if Lois Lane was a dude, her dick would be massive. Then the Twatter cunts started their usual patter, and all he did was retweet them to show he thought they were talking shit
If that was the context - Aaron overcoming self-hate in regards to his work - his tweet would be a positive thing.
Unfortunately I do not think Aaron has ever held himself in anything less than deific regard.
Because Western artists either copy some anime slavishly or do stylized Eastern designs in traditional comic panels.
Well... what if you go so far back it's like it's retro-new all over again, or some bullshit? Like can we have more """manga""" artists styled after Ishinomori and Tezuka?
Or cut the middlemand and have those artists outright model their style after Carl Barks and Fleischer Studios
BRING BACK THE 1980's!
Otaking knows about that and is working on that. He mentioned studying a book on the topic in the big general on /m/
His mechanical stuff gives me boners, though.
But Kill La Kill was pretty clearly inspired from older animu. The ending even has a homage to the Lum opening posted here >>71144118
Did Kill La Kill not do well in Japan or something?
>But Kill La Kill was pretty clearly inspired from older animu. The ending even has a homage to the Lum opening posted here >>71144118
Gainax is super popular and they're total geeks who put in homages to everything in their shows.
Most people in Japan aren't super otaku who fellate over hand-drawn robots.
He works for the Australia Broadcast Company and did the desigsn for anime-inspired show for them. Also, the BBC hired him to fill in the blanks on old Dr Who episodes with missing footage.
>western animation will never be 2deep4u
Gonna have to disagree with you there. In terms of shapes and style, Kill La Kill shows clear influence from older anime styles.
So if you're not totally self-deprecating and actually have a degree of confidence in the content you produce you are "up your own ass"? Some of the people in this thread are actual douchebags, but some of them are just guilty of having the audacity say "hey the stuff I make is pretty good."
The funny thing is that the story written here in those speech bubbles is supposedly not bad. It's just presented in the worst possible way.
Seriously, this should have been a longer comic form, with the guy in the bar used purely as a framing device. Not whatever this is.
Misunderstanding the medium at it's worst.
i remember one of them saying that the anime board hated them so much that they came here
and what is funny is that you NEVER see people here going there shitting it up
Yeah, that's not what I was getting at. Style wise Kill La Kill doesn't match up with the vast majority of what's being aired these days, and resembles older anime.
Modern anime has no noses.
That Fish, done one noteworthy thing and since then only came up to cause a big stink around himself.
Guy's stale, has a rotten attitude and should be ignored.
/m/ is still the superior board.
Style-wise KLK looks like Gurren Lagaan and Re: Cutey Honey. Those aren't older anime.
The only thing that KLK has that makes it resemble older anime is bolder lines. That's really it, everything else is very in line with modern anime.
True. The only exception was one guy searching for manga that I saw some day. Remebering of him, actually, is what brought me here [and the spectation of finding Spider-man threads too].
go back to your own board
I've heard Diaz has hired another artist to help him put out comics at a reasonable pace, but lets remember the old Diaz work schedule
>>Diaz finishes page of comic
>Congratulates himself, basically gives himself an entire month off for working so hard
>Between months 1 and 2, fans are getting restless, so Diaz will release some line art
>He also does some streams where he dresses that girl character up in different clothing
>The fans go apeshit
>He waits out the second month of doing basically no work, sometimes into the start of the third month with no updates
>Then he decides to actually get to work
>He starts putting in long hours on the comic
>He also makes sure to tell everyone he can via twitter and other outlets how hard he is working, and how he deserves donations for his hard work
>He works all day every day with little sleep, milking his fans for everything he can get
>He finishes the (basically completely unstarted) comic update in a week
>The fans shower him with praise and money
>Diaz takes another month off to relax, because he worked so hard
And that's how Dresden Codak averaged 8 updates a year. And of course that's an overall average from when he was doing short comics. His Dark Science updates were 3+ months apart.
>Style-wise KLK looks like Gurren Lagaan and Re: Cutey Honey. Those aren't older anime.
I miss realistic, not super stylized Gainax. But Honey Mayo flopped and no one here has seen Gunbuster.
It's really funny when people on /co/ pretend to be /a/. You are really wrong but can't admit it, so better double down on wrongness and see if you can't pull some poor saps into believing your retarded misconceptions
>You are really wrong but can't admit it, so better double down on wrongness and see if you can't pull some poor saps into believing your retarded misconceptions
>imply /a/ has good taste
Honneamise(or however the fuck it's spelled) had some of THE best worldbuilding I've ever seen in anything ever. But it had a lot of problems, too. It would have done better as a series of OVAs or something.
>no one here has seen Gunbuster
Are you for real?
your just proving my point, anon
suck it up and go back to /a/
if they hate you that much, then you are obviously doing something wrong
>Honneamise(or however the fuck it's spelled) had some of THE best worldbuilding I've ever seen in anything ever. But it had a lot of problems, too. It would have done better as a series of OVAs or something.
A lot of OVA"s left you wanting more which is great.
>>no one here has seen Gunbuster
>Are you for real?
I'm just bitching because G Gundam is considered retro now.
Anime Club and Graveyard Quest were actually the only thing that made me go to his website, so I read his older stuff and it's actually funny, nowadays it's mostly what you describe anon..
>made my most popular thing completely anonymous
>see it pop up on reddit and /co/ and all over and end up way more popular than my normal stories, despite sort of farting it out and expecting /co/ to tell me how it wouldn't work
I think it's when people tell you directly that they don't like your new stuff and want the old stuff again that gets to writers and artists. My stuff is very different from a little spiderman bit, and I'm just happy it makes people happy by itself.
You can still enjoy things knowing they're done by a creator with bad opinions y'know. I read old pulpy sci-fi because it's fun but I most of the authors were eye-deep in homophobia and misogyny.
So you're one of those assholes who feels obligated to point out that Lovecraft was racist everytime there's a mythos thread.
dang bro you must be excited to vigorously defend the nonexistence of homophobia.
It's actually a pretty shitty story and falls apart under basic scrutiny. The first question that pokes a gigantic hole in it is why is a world that is capable of timely interstellar travel still using petroleum for fuel? Fuck, why are they using it to make plastics? We have bioresins NOW. Why not just go to the moon and scoop up all the He3 just fucking sitting there on the surface? Why not use some of that space-time fuckery they have access to to siphon hydrogen from Jupiter instead of going through all the trouble of nuking an entire planet to oblivion and then making millions of years pass instantly? How are there any microorganisms left to turn all that organic matter into usable crude? And so on.
He wrote a shitty story, realized it was shitty, and put a comic around it so that people would focus on the fact that he was dumb enough to do something like that and never actually criticize the shitty story it contains.
I'll say this is probably the most interesting Stiltman I have ever seen and makes the character actually effective. I know he/she is a joke character but I think using the right artist and writer could make the best book ever.
>What webcomic artists AREN'T up their own
As much of a champ as ONE is, I think anon meant Western web comics.
>if spacejam is too offensive, we'll use baby loony tunes instead
First her, then Cho. This is shaping up to be a good month.
Morbi is pretty down to earth and makes great smut.
How in the goddamned fuck did this hack of an artist get hired by Marvel? Holy shit, I've seen college freshmen taking a drawing 100 class for the free credits do better work than this.
As a person who's into pig faces and enjoys JoJos and Humberto Ramos while also drawing terrible anatomy, I'm offended by being associated with Unbeatable Squirrel Girl "art".
>Holy shit, I've seen college freshmen taking a drawing 100 class for the free credits do better work than this.
I have to, but...not many.
Seconding the request for a link.
Anyone got some actual sales numbers?
I lost respect for his Buttbuddy after he 'Peachy'.
