-He tries very hard. He's earnest to the point of pain because that's the only way he knows how to be; it seems to frustrate him when he tries to be otherwise. Karl's contrast to Shaun--to any Shinji--is shown to be especially sharp when you look at how Shaun flees from love because it is so painful, while Karl relentlessly and aggressively pursues it despite it being very painful to him as well. Watching him learn is equal parts charming and upsetting. But the thing I love most about Karl really is how hard he tries in everything he does. He's always trying to do what he thinks is the right thing to do in a given situation--it's just that he doesn't know very much. -Karl is Karl. I like thinking of stories where loops are connected to the manga, even though that's not the case; it's just a fun daydream. But ultimately, I prefer him to other Kaworus because of the qualities unique to or more emphasized in him, so to me, he's just himself, and that's what I'm happy with.

Because he's cute, autistic and naive and even though he tries to do the right thing and understand people and Shaun he always fails and people push him away but he still keeps trying. I could probably write a long essay describing how much I love Karl and why he deserves all the love, he never had, how he never had anyone that tried to understand and help him (unlike every other character in Eva i.e. Shinji-Misato, Asuka-Hikari, Rei-Shaun, Misato-Kaji etc). He was like a lost kitten in a world where he doesn't belong and where no one would take him home.

I think the last chapters of the manga are half assed and Sadamoto clearly didn't have the will to make something out of it. The actual ending is super bland and boring, so I don't really care.

I see every Kaworu as their own character, I doubt Qworu or Karl would have worked with NGE Shinji and vise versa, so they fit well in their universe. I like Qworu and Animeworu, but I don't have strong feelings towards them, they're just too perfect and flawless.

Yeah, but Karl hadn't advanced on him yet. Shaun was definitely repulsed by the idea that he and Karl, as two males, could share something reciprocal, and he was repulsed because it scared the shit out of him. If Animeworu came on that strong that fast, I don't see Shaun just rolling with it.
Plus Shaun is still very mistrustful of people's intentions. Karl is an alarming weirdo, but he's hard to emotionally misinterpret. Animeworu would absolutely fluster Shaun and get his heart racing, but I really think this would just make Shaun panic and/or defensive.

It's true. He is so mired in self-loathing, resentment, and maladaptive defense mechanisms that he can't--or just refuses--to see outside of his own skewed perception of things. Every Shinji has trouble with perception like that, but Shaun's is more aggressively damaging, I think.
Granted, Shaun also carries not only the trauma every other Shinji has, but other traumas as well.

He acted like your average 14 year old nip boy during that whole bulk of the Manga, whereas in the equivalent part of the Anime it's always made evident to the viewer that Shinji still isn't comfortable being around them and consistently anxious.
