other than the one guy with the blush overuse I'm not sure where you're getting 'tumblr' off of these styles. There's some really distinct garbage traits that 'tumblr style' artists tend to abuse and I'm not seeing them.

That said, I'm not sure exactly what one expects of Original Characters that aren't at least a little bit snowflakey. That's the whole fun of OC creation.

well I mean, everybody's going to have different preferences. But I think any good design regardless of gender is going to follow some basic character design rules. Like, Basic shape repetition, a distinct silhouette, details that reflect the lifestyle of the character/a design that tells a story.

But personally? I wish i saw more OCs with a greater variation in body type and particularly age. and I don't mean that there should be more fat male characters. While I don't think they're bad, I just mean that I've gotten pretty bored with the standard upside-down triangle/'superman' builds that I seem to pop up everywhere.

I don't intend to turn that sketch into a full piece, no. Really it's not even a super good representation of the characters since it's a 'this is what they'd look like in the future' thing. But it's my most recent drawing of them so I posted it.

i second the body type comment

more specifically, i love when an artist is able to give their character decidedly non-traditional facial features, without crossing full over into gonk territory. even when artists make a point to mix up body types and make a character that's fat or old or ripped or whatever, they'll still give him a strong jaw with a tapered chin, a low-sitting hairline, etc.

i want to see people experiment with different facial features. i want men with weak jawlines, men with overbites or underbites, men with receding hairlines or patchy beards. i want men with necks that are too short or too long, with protruding ears, or ugly, crooked noses. i want men with slight jowls and chipmunk cheeks, whose faces round off into an oval shape instead of a pretty triangle or manly square.

I usually go to tumblr for refs so idk what the supposed tumblr nose people keep talking about even are. Also oddly enough I've drawn his nose differently every other time I've drawn him, this kind just feels the most canon or whatever.

Very cute, overall, anon. I like the ears. About the "tumblr nose". A tumblr nose, by definition, is basically a very red/pigmented nose, usually minimally outlined. I've never minded it myself, as it allows what is quite a clunky feature to draw on a face to be minimal and even cute. Some people will point it out for some reason, though, but usually it's only because it causes sameface in one's art. In this instance, I don't think your boy's nose qualifies.

The nose is not bad in my opinion, and does its job as far as being boyish. The posing and expression is nice, if a little muted. To me, below the belt seems a bit oversexualized, but that's probably because I'm a prude. The only real trouble I have with it is the color palette. It lacks firm contrast, and seems muddy. A palette is not just color, but texture and brightness as well, and contrast and complement are very important to the composition of an aesthetically-pleasing piece. This problem is remedied by experimenting with color, so be playful! Try many different palettes, preferably starting with your favorite colors, and then using some you may have never used otherwise. You may find some new favorites!

I encountered someone's artwork the other day of their character that I have to say struck a chord with me at how pretty the image was, and that the character was so self insert of myself I felt like it was how I'd draw myself if I could draw, but perhaps with minor changes.
Now I have an incredible desire to have my OC drawn, which honestly would just be self-insert (but not an exact self-portrait) through and through but then I realized I don't actually know how to make an OC, even if I commissioned art from someone, what do you even look for or describe when you have an idea of how to make an OC?

I could just post two images and say "The hair of this, the face of this" but then at what point am I simply just editing a currently existing character rather than designing my own?

How do you even describe to someone who draws, what exactly it is you want? I feel like if I commissioned something from an artist, I'd be standing over their shoulder pestering them to eternity until I found it perfect and that doesn't sit well with me because I know artists likely get that a lot and I'd hate to be another person. Especially if I commissioned their usual prices but took up more time than normal.

I feel like if I just did the whole "The hair of this, the face of this" then I would wind up with a very "same-ey" character to something else which devalues it being an OC.

Few questions:

Firstly, why do you just assume I don't/can't draw? Because I do/can, just not as well as that-- and of course I'd really enjoy having high-quality art of an OC, even if I don't draw it myself. Secondly, why do you have to even be able to draw to have OCs? You don't need to have artistic talent to be able to think up, create, and develop characters.

Thirdly, why would you even assume I got a commission only to parade it in threads? It's an OC. I got it to look at, and to use for D&D games as character art/tokens. I posted it here because he's a cute boy OC, which is what the thread is for.

Making/having OC's isn't some sort of exclusive club only for people who can draw well, anon. It's silly to screech at somebody for that.

This definitely should be the case. If you're a commissioner who can't draw, then you didn't design your character, and therefore it isn't yours (since you're just giving a basic idea of what an artist should draw). You're taking credit for someone else's work.

That reasoning is completely bogus. I am not gaining ownership of a character just for drawing it. The idea is the author's, the design is the author's, the character is the author's, otherwise all book illustrators could claim ownership of the book's characters. "Oh look, I illustrated 1984, now it belongs to me. Also Disney is the sole proprietor of all the books they based their films on."
