Just finished chapter 33, and honestly this show/manga is about as barren for hets as it is for homos.

I think John Steinbeck and H.P. Lovecraft might have a little chemistry (now that's something I'd get weird looks for saying in public), but maybe the possibility for tentacles is making me biased.

Not having the balls to finish a thought or to make a pairing canon is a typical anime/manga problem. I never really understood the reason why they refuse to clarify things. I even doubt it will happen with Atsushi and Kyouka, they'll probably just stay friends till the end and people who like it can interpret is as romantical relationship and that's it.

For entirely separate reasons, I'm really hoping they don't try to pull anything with Atsushi/Kyouka. The Atsushi is 18 and she's 14 thing is a little yikes for me. Episode 11 had me totally prepared to ship Keiji with Atsushi, but it turns out that he's 14 too. It's so hard to find two charcters in this show who are roughly the same age, and also have chemistry.

Haven't reached that part in the manga yet, but I love (the real) HPL, and his design in BSD is pretty nice as well. Looking forward seeing him animated in the next cour, especially because the anime improves their designs and he needs more fanart anyway.

Well some of the characters in this show openly stated that they're interested in women. Like Dazai with his search for a cute female suicide partner or Kunikida in one of the first few episodes. And the pairings Atsushi/Kyouka or Akutagawa/blondie are hinted as well. Maybe it's just loyality and friendship, but people could interpret romance if they wanted.
I guess one of the problems is that this show has too many characters and most of them get almost no screentime or interaction with other relevant guys because of that.

People usually assume everyone else is hetero by default since it's a statistical norm. Imo, the reason why they crack jokes about liking girls in shonen and seinen is that it gives you the atmosphere of an average conversation. These genres are not romance-focused, that's why they often leave the possibilities open. It's doubtful that anyone at all will get a significant romance in BSD because it would distract from the action and the main plot. Some shonen might create canon hetero ships to lure in the shoujou demographic too, but I'm talking about stuff like Naruto here and BSD will never be able to whore out that much. For the same reason - because it's not a show you can sell like 20-season animes - they won't make the mistake of critically narrowing down the viewership by turning it into shonen ai. Tbh, I'm thankful enough for the considerable amount of queerbaiting.
