Has anyone here ever thrown dried shiitake mushrooms straight into a soup instead of reconstatuting them in water first? Didn't know if it would give the soup too strong a flavor.

Why don't you just throw one in and see if you like it? Why do y'all cook so timidly on this board

should be fine, the soaking is mostly to remove any remaining grit from the mushroom

just fucking do it
don't ever doubt the power of the mushroom
I've done it with dried porcini and never noticed any difference so I assume it would be the same for shitake.
If your shiitake look like your pic, you need to remove the stem. Also most shiitake is from china, just throwing that out there.

Dried shiitakes are pretty flavorless, actually. Costco now sells "dried mushroom snacks" which are vacuum-dried shiitakes sprinkled with some salt and paprika, and they taste like salt and paprika on styrofoam.

This. I left the stems on once and my mushroom sauce came out more bitter than a Hillary supporter.

Pic related is me btw

Implying there is such a thing as too much Shiitake flavour. Just check whether you should wash them, sometimes the dried ones are not cleaned.

Just proving her point.
