It was originally made and marketed as a lady-like alternative to alcohol. See way back when it was improper in the U.S. for women to drink or smoke, so some businesses came up with other ways for ladies to get their kicks without violating social norms.

7up was made with added Ether, iirc.

Because Sun Drop is better.

Green River is the best, but it's really only available in the midwest unless you find it at a specialty soda shop
