Yesterday I had the worst uni (sea urchin) nigiri I've ever had. It was so bad that I almost spit it out/threw up, and if I weren't at an important dinner, I would have. I'm amazed it didn't make me sick all night. It was so bad that I'm turned off of the flavor, at least for a while.
What're the best widely available nigiri or sashimi options that /ck/ likes? I love roe and other fishy tasting stuff normally.

First time I had uni I though it was awful because it was less than fresh, and less than fresh uni is fucking disgusting. Took me years to try it again and realize it's delicious.
I always wanted to try Uni but am afraid of exactly this, seems to be hit or miss.
I always get some lean tuna and eel with a roll or something.

Horse mackerel is my favourite but it's hard to go past good tuna. lean or fatty.

How can I trust your opinion when you say uni nigiri, but post a photo of uni gunkan?
It's like you don't even know what sushi is.

George H. W. Bush, is that you?
Just take unflavored jello, mix some iodine and salt in it. That's sea urchin.

You might as well ask for the best types of feces.

>Salmon egg (ikura)
>mackerel
>spicy scallop sushi
>unagi
>uni
Slightly on-topic I guess but is there a way to tell good uni from bad uni just by looking at it?
I love uni and I purchase it from H Mart a lot, but I've noticed a lot of packages contain some darker colored uni and some that look on the pale side and I've always wondered if it's poor quality. They charge $8.99 for a tray.
bbq eel on anything is top tier. I get it in a bag from my grocer. Bake it in my oven for 20 mins. Throw it on some rice and chow down. I don't trust dirty japs/chinks to prepare raw fish when they can't even wash their hands after using the restroom. I live in Ohio and catch my own trout/salmon every November to make sushi with.
remember anon-kun. asians don't believe in sanitation. they don't ever wash their hands or worry about cross contamination. Making your own is the best way.
