Back in the day tea was shipped over very long and harsh routes and the quality was often very shitty. You had crumbly black tea with a lot of tannins. A splash of milk was used to make the disgusting flavours of bad tea less intense.
Now that pretty much everyone has potential access to good whole leaf tea there's no excuse.
