That one isn't bad, nothing amazing though. Had (I believe) the 18 some time last year at a whiskey night with some coworkers.

>>9366272
That one isn't bad either but there are better choices in its price range. Bulleit is on par with it and a lot cheaper, if you're into rye-y bourbons. Jameson is a great irish if you just want to drink a lot imo, it tastes bretty good and goes down smooth

I'm more of a rum guy myself, but I quite like pic related for the price (for all the hate JB gets this particular bottle is pretty good).
>>
Jim Beam is my current go-to. I'll get Devil's Cut if Piggly Woggly has it stocked. Just bought a bottle of Red Stag to try but maybe later this weekend or next week.
>>
>>9366395

I'm fond of the red stag but the cherry flavour doesn't always have the appeal you're after. Makes a bottle last longer, and as long as you have something else to drink when you're after a different flavour you won't get sick of and regret it.

and this.

>why do you like whiskey over other alcohol

The flavor. I'm not big on cocktails, and a good whiskey is better than any other booze straight, imo.

>do you add anything

Not usually, and if I do its a single ice cube.

>how often do you drink

Basically everyday. I usually have at least a beer or glass of wine with dinner, and a whisky while I read before bed. I only allow myself to get drunk on Friday/Saturdays
>>
>>9366206
The age statement Japanese whiskeys are getting crazy expensive. Try the Hibiki Harmony before splurging on a 12 year. That Yamazaki is beautiful though.
>>9366770
LOVE the Coffey Grain. To me it's closer to a high end pot still Irish whiskey than scotch.
>>
>>9366770
I've had the Coffey Malt, but not the Grain. I thought it was pretty good. Is the Grain worth trying?

>>9366790
Yeah, I don't really go for Japanese stuff because of the price. Plenty of bourbon or scotch I'd rather just stick with at a friendlier dollar sign.

>>9366206
Right now, I have Blanton's, Highland Park 12, and Jameson Black Barrel in my bar. I like them all quite a bit. I don't really have a favorite yet - still trying new things.
>why do you like whiskey over other alcohol
Other stuff either is too sweet or has an aftertaste I'm not a huge fan of. I do like nice beer though. I'm also a sucker for a Moscow Mules.
>do you add anything
With bourbons or ryes like Bulliet or MM. I like an Old Fashioned or some similar cocktail every now and then. A local place got me liking a bourbon/ginger liquer/orange bitters on the rocks drink.
>how often do you drink
I have like 2-3 whisky's during the week and like 4-6 beers on the weekend.
>>
>>9366825
I haven't tried the malt, but the grain is fantastic. It's one of the few that I make sure to continually have stocked in my wet bar.

GET HIBIKI 12 NOT HIBIKI HARMONY ANON

Please, trust my decade of liquor store experience the harmony is bullshit the Japanese are selling to us in exchange for all of our sick-ass Jim beam whiskey.

The 12 is being discontinued because it's too good for white devil's, don't fuck with the harmony is trash my bretheren
>>
>>9366206
Quite like hibiki.
Just bought a bottle the other day actually.

>>
>>9366206
Whiskey is an overhyped poor-mans schnaps.
>>
>>9366206
>your favorite whiskey

I can't drink spirits anymore because I'm a fucktard and the nice ones are expensive.

I like lagavullin, talisker, highland park, old pulteney and bunnahabhain......of the blends I liked black bottle, isle of sky 8 and johnnie walker green.

of american whiskeys I liked elijah craig 12, buffalo trace and eagle rare.

>why do you like whiskey over other alcohol

I'm scottish....so its mandatory to like whisky without the "e"

>do you add anything
I used to try adding a dash of water to see if it changed the flavour profile.....i'd never add ice, soda etc
>how often do you drink

I still drink daily...just not spirits
>>
>>9366206
I live in Japan.

Hibiki is genuinely great. It's got notes of white chocolate and honey. I gave a bottle to a friend for Christmas. I wouldn't drink it alone. It's something you would share with others. I haven't tried the other two bottles in your picture.

If you want to get into Japanese whisky, I recommend Suntory White. It's cheap and really smooth. Kirin Fuji-sanroku is similar in price but it has more of a kick to it. I tried Koshu but didn't like it. I don't know why Japan likes blended whisky so much.
>>
>>9366907
Cheap widespread availability of the aged stuff was phased out in Japan even earlier than the rest of the world. They simply didn't put enough of it away 12 years ago, since no one saw the demand coming.

>>9366527
Wines are climate-related, and vodka is treated as a substitute for cheap shochu as cocktail filler rather than a serious thing in itself.
I'm surprised there's been no real effort toward rum, with the significantly lower stigma against low-test mixed drinks for men or hard liquor for women.

This is my new favorite. Has anybody tried this? I have no idea how available it is nationwide. A fried let me try a glass of it over the weekend and I loved it, and I usually don't like straight alcohol. It was smooth all the way to the finish, almost no burn and was slightly sweet. Almost had a creamy sort of feel. I haven't tried many higher end bourbons though.
>>
>>9369289
I'm moving to Utah in a month.
Are the liquor stores really that's bad?
Maybe I'll stop being an alcoholic
>>
>>9370314
They have a stand for it at my local now, must be a promotion.
>>
>>9370314
They don't even distill most of the liquor in the bottle. They buy from a factory distillery in Indiana, then they just blend some of there own with it.
It's a scam.
Tastes good though
>>
>>9370355
Lol I think they are promoting it, that's why he let me try it. He got the bottle for free.

>>9370358
Have any similar recommendations?
>>
>>9370371
Not who you asked, but a similarly priced bourbon I like is Maker's 46. It's spicy, creamy, and relatively smooth. Woodford Reserve is also very nice.

If you're willing to spend $15-20 more, Blanton's is pretty good. I haven't tried that many bourbons pricier than it though.
>>
>>9370371
>>9370378
Blanton's is one of my favorites, it's definitely the best available in most liquor stores.
I do like the taste of High West, I just hate that it's a big phoney with a pretty label.
>>
>>9366770
Aged rums work just like whisky anon, but theres less of a demand for those in the U.S and globally.
>>
>>9369289
Save up your liquor money and take a trip and while on the trip buy 500$ worth of liquor.
>>
>>9370437
It's illegal to bring liquor from another state into Utah
>>
>>9370342
If you have easy access to a liquor store and like bourbon a lot it isn't too terrible. Wine stores have better liquor inventory than regular liquor stores for more obscure spirits. The biggest problems for me are imported liquor prices, high point beer prices, and bar laws (no cocktails over 2.5 abv are allowed). The craft beer scene here is actually greqt if you avoid grocery store and tap. Utah's also about to roll about the stricted blood alcohol level driving laws in the nation so keep that in mind.
>>
>>9370449
and?
What you have some police gonna kick in your door or something?
>>
>>9366206
all those whiskey's in your pic are fucking great for the price
>>
>>9370449
Do they stop you at the border?
>>
>>9370342
>>9370483
Oh and also, since liquor is state regulated, everything is sold at suggested retail + taxes so limited quantity stuff that gets sold at insane prices in other states is relatively cheap here.

Also, I meant 2.5 oz for cocktails not abv
>>
>>9370512
>>9370483

(note I'm determining "shit-tier" as anything under £20 and "blended" as grain/malt blends)

1) Black bottle....quite like the new bottling, preferred the old one
2)Isle of skye 8.....sort of like a cheap highland park. Don't let anyone tell you it has loadsa talisker in it...it doesn't
3) Teacher's highland cream.....was shit for a while....then good..then bad....was good last time I drank it (raymond carver used to drink lots of it)
4)famous grouse (mellow grouse is better than original grouse which is better than black grouse which used to be better than all of them)
20)Tesco's special reserve
200)grants....all variations
2000)Whyte and mackay....pure shite. tastes like cheap guilt, regret, airfix glue......the "sherried" one has a nose of stale cum to it
9000) Bells. dire

Makers 46 is my fav for the price
Idk why I like it better than say vodka or rum, it just tastes better to me. Plus the burn is pleasant after a long day.
If I'm drinking straight whiskey a splash of water actually helps. Something about the whiskey tannin chemicals are repellant to water, so adding water pushes the tannins to the surface and makes more contact with your tongue. Otherwise Coke is the best mixer
I drink pretty much every weekend

I've got a bottle of this at the moment. Never tried scotch before (Irish whiskey is usually my thing) so I don't know how to judge it. The smokiness is definitely not what I'm used to. I've read stuff where people criticise Teacher's over the past couple of years for having less smoke. Not sure whether they've returned the whisky to how it used to be, or whether I'm noticing it because I'm not used to scotch.

I enjoy whisky and vodka over all liquors but I probably drink wine more than anything else.
Usually take an icecube in my whisky, I will get a scotch and dry at low-end pubs or whiskey sour at cocktail bars.
Rarely drink alone apart from wine with dinner, but I go to client meetings and social events for work maybe once a fortnight where I'll drink socially.

>your favorite whiskey
Either Lagavulin 16 or Rittenhouse if I want to enjoy something halfway special with a friend. Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve if I want an all occasion drink I can enjoy alone any time. I'm not really a strict scotch or bourbon loyalist, although I haven't found an Irish I've fallen in love with yet. Never even tried Canadian. I've had Hibiki 12 once and it was great.

>why do you like whiskey over other alcohol
The variety of flavours you get from it. The amount of variation you can find in what is technically the same kind of spirit is amazing to me. I love the briny, smoky and almost antiseptic taste of islay, I love the sweet and woody taste of bourbon, I love the peppery taste of rye. There's so much to explore and discover.

>do you add anything
A bit of water to my scotch, maybe. I'm not above having an old fashioned if it's a social situation and I want to stretch the drink out a bit though.

>how often do you drink
Only occasionally these days. Money's tighter than it was in the past and I don't really enjoy cheap bourbon that much, although it can be okay. Cheap scotch is terrible.
>>
>>9373981

Also scotch whisky tastes way different depending on which region it's from.
Islay whisky tastes like smoke and seaweed big while whisky from the Highlands is a bit more mellow and has some floral notes.

>why do you like whiskey over other alcohol
I like the aftertaste of whiskey, preferably when it's soft, or smokey.
>do you add anything
Cold rocks, sometimes.
>how often do you drink
Once or twice a month. I keep it to special moments or occasions.
>>
>>9379758
Some people like it and some people don't, but not many people start out with their first drinks being whiskey neat and enjoy the experience.
I only started liking whiskey in my later 20s about the same time I started enjoying red wine.
>>
>>9379758
That was my first experience with whisky as well. I had on the rocks after and let the ice melt 80% before drinking it and it was a lot better. I kept doing that but letting the ice melt less and less as I got more accustomed to it. Now I can drink neat, but I prefer the drink to be slightly chilled.

>American whisky is a shit show
Less than you might think, because of the strict regulations that have to be adhered to in order to call something "Kentucky straight bourbon". As a general rule, even bottom shelf bourbon will be half decent if it's labelled with those three words. The regulations on labelling something straight bourbon are actually stricter than labelling something a single malt scotch whisky. Straight bourbon isn't permitted to contain caramel colouring, for example.

I've never heard of that being the case, but I haven't fucked with american whisky too much after hearing about "rapid-aging"
>>
>>9370914
Famous Grouse is about the only whiskey I drink.
>>
>>9382096
Rapid ageing is an experimental process only being employed by a scant handful of distilleries, last I heard about it. It's shortsighted to dismiss an entire variety because a few outliers are getting scientific with their procedure.
The term "straight bourbon/rye" is basically as much a mark of the distillation process' integrity as "single malt" is, and as the legal regulations currently stand, that definition doesn't allow for rapid ageing.
Don't buy into the cult of elitism that surrounds scotch. I love my islay and speyside as much as the next man, but you shouldn't snub perfectly good whiskey because of snobbery. Look into regional distillation regulations, it's actually a remarkable way to help you learn to distinguish good whisky/whiskey from bad.

There's too much variety out there to deny yourself the chance to try new things just because you want to be seen as having "better taste". Have fun with the vast amount of stuff out there.
>>
>>9382314
I also tended to snub American stuff because it seemed overly priced. Okay scotches can be had as low as 20-30$, but American stuff seems overly expensive in comparison.
>>
>>9382404
Are you euro/brit? It makes sense that bourbon would be pricier if it's imported, although there's still some really decent bourbon in that same price bracket. I'm genuinely surprised if you're in the US though, I would have thought decent scotch would be at a premium compared to native stuff.
>>
>>9382404
You must be overseas. You can get a ton of great bourbon in the states for $20-30 but decent scotch will start at $35-50
>>
>>9382438
Americunt. The old age stuff runs 50$ or so in my abc state for a liter bottle. Younger rougher single malt are like 30$ though. Which is same price as bulleits rye.

I don't know. When I cook, or when I'm looking at recipes, I don't really wonder "is this authentic?" Like I don't make authentic Italian lasagna, I like making really spicy and really saucy lasagna, and I do the same thing when I make Japanese/Asian food.

I eat authentic Japanese food when I go to restaurants, and like another Anon said, the flavors are really subtle. When I think authentic Japanese food I think of something like yakitori, which is just chicken on a skewer, and usually there are two flavors: salt or soy sauce. It's really just salty chicken on a stick. They do the same thing with grilled fish, they just add some salt and that's it.

Other authentic Japanese food I can think of are pickled vegetables. I once met a really old Japanese woman and for lunch she just ate a ton of pickled onions and carrots with a little soy sauce and that was her lunch. In Japan everyone eats a big dinner like that on January 1st. It's probably really authentic, but I don't know if you want to just eat pickled lotus root and cucumbers as a meal. I wouldn't. Maybe as a side dish, but not an entre. You can always look for a miso soup recipe or a curry recipe. That's pretty popular.

Just look up Japanese recipes on the internet. If the recipe tells you to make a thick dipping sauce, like a honey mustard soy sauce, or if it tells you to add a ton of sugar, or non-Japanese fruits and vegetables like tomatoes or mangos, or spices like 5 Spice, which is Chinese, then it's probably not authentic. I think that's your best bet. Learn what ingredients aren't in "authentic" Japanese food and adjust whatever recipes you find accordingly.
>>

Irish distilleries are a joke since all the historic ones nearly closed down. So now it's all new shit set up in Ireland so it can be "Irish"

The flip side of this is that lots of the Japanese diet, including a bunch of unique dishes, are things that the Japanese consider "Chinese" or "Western". I'd definitely skip out on Maria Taro's Definitely Authentic Barbecue Sauce Tonkatsu, say, but you can't make a good plate of Hayashi rice without ketchup and the stuff the Japanese call Worcestershire sauce that's actually genericized A-1. Even the "Japanese-style" hamburgs I made last night needed lemon juice and white sugar as part of the thick onion reduction as the sauce.

I work at an izakaya in gifu and this is very true. Most of the recipes involve some combo of sake shoyu mirin. Sometimes salt, vinegar or sugar. Nikujaga. Tofu (various boiled dishes). Shogayaki. Oden. Teriyaki. Nanbanzuke. Nikudofu. Tamagoyaki. Add dashi for soups and fish dishes.

Fish and vegetables are often just lightly grilled or fried with salt or shoyu.

And of course sukemono. Salt cured pickles. Any vegetable OK. Daikon is most common.

Sometimes it's miso based though. At which point you'll add a bunch of miso paste.

Pretty new to whiskey only being a college student. Any good $30-$40 whiskey I should try other than makers?

Johnnie Walker Green Label, one of the best blended whiskys out there and reasonably priced, better than blue lable and a lot of single malts IMO.

>>
Woodford Reserve or Knob Creek? I'm going shopping and I want one or the other.
>>

son, its £40+ in scotland. I can buy any of the component single-malts for JW green for around the same price (caol ila, talisker etc).

It used to cost £25 not that long ago.

its really bloody good stuff .... just overpriced

>Ardbeg Corrywreckan
At least until I find anything better, Ardbeg has the best ones I've ever had, from the regular 10 yo to the more expensive ones. Still trying to get my hands on pic related.
>why whisky?
I don't really prefer whisky over others, it's purely a seasonal thing. I have been enjoying grappa most of the summer.
>additions?
I prefer my drinks as-is. From coffee to alcohol, only sometimes I do gintonic or a random mix I feel like having.
>how often?
I drink stronger stuff maybe twice a month and never in large amounts. I drink wines, beers and such every week, on weekends with food and after sauna.
>>
>>9390400
whats a good drink after a sauna?

lager?

Kelpie is a shit release, barely better if not worse then the Perpentuum.
Look for the Galileo or Ardbog if not the Lord of the Isles since that one is fucking legendary.

You gotta do it right man:

1)Sauna
2)Flagellate self with birch branches
3)jump in frozen lake
4)vodka
5)Repeat from step 1

>Halloo my malty.....motherfuckers

is there a better whisky youtouber than ralfy?
I think not. he's got a bit long and rambling over the past few years, and he's obviously overstepping the threshold into terminal alcoholism......but he's my go to yootoober
for whisky reviews.

I also like to watch his videos when im drinking alone to pretend I'm not drinking alone
>>
>>9390419
I like some pilseners, dark lagers and wheat beers. Most lagers are too tasteless to enjoy hydrating yourself. For a
finn
, there's a bunch of really good beers in regular stores for affordable prices.
>>9390442
Thanks for the heads up. There's sometimes a possibility to taste some of the whiskeys in cruise ships, sometimes it being free and I would at least want to taste Kelpie. So far I've seen it only in mainland
Finland
and it's been like 110 euros a bottle, which I feel like is too much for a bottle that feels somewhat gimmicky.
Afterall, it's more expensive than Corrywreckan, but I could be wrong about that.
>>
>>9390464
Lakes aren't frozen at the moment though, and even then, rolling in the snow is much better option. Lake dipping is for casuals and besides, you should be drinking Jaloviina, not fucking vodka, unless you're a fucking hereditary soviet or live close to Russia.
>>
>>9390473
Ralfy is a pretentious, self-important, insufferable memester faggot who always goes about how he can tell 50 different smell and 80 different taste notes. What a load of horse shit!
>>
>>9390531
His review of jack daniels made me realise that he's more concerned with elitism than accurate and objective tasting. Jack is terrible and only defensible by ignorant loyalists, but he was so shamelessly harsh in his notes that it was obvious he was riding the snobbery rather than pointing out its actual flaws fairly.
His reviews of actual good whisky and bourbon are on point, though.
>>
>>9390531
he was better when he was limited to under 10 minutes.

I get nostalgic for his early reviews when his speech wasn't slurred.

Worth noting that he only really started drinking whisky about a year before he started making vids. he initially did it to give him some distraction after his boyfriend left him
>>
>>9390556
JD does smell like airfix glue and is inexcusably dearer than better whiskeys like buffalo trace and bulleit (where i live).

He was right to give it a gralloching
>>
>>9390600
He was right to, but his snobbish bias was plainly visible. Right for the wrong reasons.
I always thought it smelled and tasted like foam banana candy.

Next time try Alberta Premium or Forty Creek

If you remember seeing any hype for Whistlepig a couple years back, that was rebottled Alberta Premium (their in-house whiskey hadn't come of age yet)

I recently spent a few weeks in Japan, and while there I picked up a real taste for Kakubin highballs. Kakubin is almost impossible to find here, though, and ridiculously overpriced if you do. ($60-70 for a bottle that's like $20 in Japan.)

What's a good analog for Kakubin that's widely available and reasonably priced in the US?
>>
>>9391962
heard of those. I'm going to explore other countries first but when I circle back to Canada I'll give them a try.

I went with Pendleton since it was touted as better than the upper tier crown royal offerings at a competitive price point.

well, it was on discount too, so what the hell.
>>
How do I develop my tastes so a heavy peat flavor doesn't just taste like bandaids.
>>
>>9392168
The same way you developed your tastes so whisky didn't just taste like fire water. Drink enough of it to acclimatize your tastebuds to it.

Jim Beam is better than Jasper Daniels.

Fact
>>
>>9392002
Honestly, highballs dilute the whiskey with so much soda and juice that it doesn't matter what kind of whiskey you use. Just use the cheapest stuff you can find. Jack Daniels, for instance.

I tried highballs a few times in Japan and I could barely taste any whiskey at all. They're for people with zero alcohol tolerance and don't want to get drunk because they need to work the next day.

I've been coming to 4chan for well over a decade. Who would have thought the most civilized thread with the least amount of shitposting I've ever seen would have been a whiskey thread?

This. His early reviews are much better and more straight to the point.
Nowadays he makes a living selling glencairns and "private cask" whisky that he overprices by at least 40 pounds and then claims its worth double the asking, that bastard is full of so much shit you'd think he was Jewish!

No shit you go to America to try cheaper American whiskey. Of course scotch will be overpriced when they have to ship it across the ocean and go through tons of fees and regulations before hitting shelves.
>>9392793
There's still shitposting here, if anything the least ive seen is with 70s-80s anime threads or Yoshitoshi ABe threads on /a/.
