Yes the mouth pieces are ridiculous. Mine looked a little different. But my jaw was so bad i had to wear it 24/7 for 6months....i had some crazy headachs and a nosebleed in the 1st week. But it did help. Helped me to retrain my bite a little so eating wouldnt pop my jaw all the time......its been years since and my teeth have shifted, the piece no long fits properly, i wish it did so i could use it. Only other thing i do to help is put pressure on hollow spot behind your ear. Hold for 20 secs and alternate.

Former chef and qualified dental technician here. TMJ disorder appliances will be painful and uncomfortable in the short term, as they are literally forcing you to occlude (bite down) in an unfamiliar way. There are other forms of mandibular motion your appliance may be correcting also, if you have crossbite or similar.

If it's still uncomfortable after a few weeks, you should seek out a good quality smaller dental lab in your area to have it checked. Dentists are utter cuntrags who will happily refer your appliance to a shitty sweatshop lab that do a half-assed job if it saves them five bucks (and makes you come back for 'adjustments').

The pain in your right jaw is simply the head of the mandible rubbing against part of the TMJ it doesnt normally contact. If you have pain in the teeth or gums when wearing the device, your dentist probably fucked up the impression so the model the appliance was built on is slightly different to your actual dentition.

I've had some form of TMJ issues for awhile, popping and grinding, it was really bad at one point and I had to go on soft food for a few months. My dentist prodded my face a bit and said there's no pathology, but the popping was constant, almost every time I opened my mouth, painful, and my bite is still weird and out of line feeling. Should I look into an appliance myself?

On a food related note, going onto soft food wasn't too bad, most of my cooking revolves around stews, soups, curries and stuff like that so it wasn't too bad, I just miss eating fresh crunchy vegetables and fruits.

Are you back onto normal foods yet OP?

Anon, most dentists are scum. I created appliances and ceramic crowns and bridges for over seventy different dentists, and of those, maybe three were someone I'd refer family to.

Dentists treat teeth. Jaw alignment disorders need specialists. If you find yourself changing your diet to accomodate chewing- especially as a young person- that's an issue you need to address so you can get ortho.

Ask for a referral, or just plain call a few new practices to see if they have a dentist who specialises in TMJ disorders. It's one of the most interesting joints in the human body. Real dentists are genuinely interested in how it works. Anyone else is wasting your time.

try sleeping with a wedge pillow, so you're elevated. You might have trouble with sleeping deeply, like you have prey sleep apnea. Sleeping in an inclined position will make the mucus in the sinus drip down and not collect and dry and clog your sinus and block your airway.
