What are some good foods that will help your mental health?
>>
I find that a good salad with kale really helps the digestive tract, and a healthy colon is a happy colon. I would also recommend peanuts, but they dry your mouth out like crazy, so supplement it with water.
>>
>>9360088
Instantly obvious that someone doesn't know what the they're talking about when they figure that forcing disingenuous social interaction will make people stop wanting to kill themselves.

Anyway, fatty fish will help.
>>
>>9360128
I think it's moreso about not becoming unable to interact with other people well after isolating yourself from human contact.

Nuts.

t. person who believed he was "depressed" and realized how stupid the whole idea was
>>
>>9360930
Mentally healthy, non-depressed person here. Social interaction is overrated. I used to love hanging around people and talking, and then as I got older, I realized it wasn't worth it and started to phase it out. Feels good, man.

>>9360088
I really don't know. I was eating a lot of berries and vegetables last summer, and I was in a pretty great mood, but I think most of that had to do with me getting a new job that I didn't totally abhor.

>>

Your favourite fruit/whatever fruit you've got. It's a small start but having a fruit breakfast will make you feel healthier and improve your mood by at least a tiny bit.

off-topic note: making your bed is another baby step you could try to help improve your mental health as you can consider it as accomplishing one small task of the day. You also get a welcoming bed when you decide to hop back in
>>

I'd also add grapes to that list. Grapes are the greatest fruit of all, and come in many delicious varieties.

>>
>>9360088
You know those things you eat that make you feel like a fat slob and want to kill yourself? Anything but that.
>>
>>9360088
Raw fermented foods are supposed to help keep your digestive bacteria healthy, which has an effect on the brain. Some studies have shown that people with depression issues are more likely to have unhealthy gut flora. It's possible that depression causes the unhealthy flora, but it's still worth it to try and keep it healthy so you don't have to deal with stomach aches, diarrhea, etc.

Other than that, having cold, sweet, refreshing fruit during hot months can help keep you hydrated and refreshed when the heat is making you cranky. A little bit of tea once in a while can help too, as long as you don't drink too much and become addicted to the caffeine.
>>
>>9360088
Not eating will help. Try fasting for a day.

>>
>>9363452
Nothing, as long as you aren't keeping yourself awake by refusing to go to sleep or using stimulants, or something like that. People just made a few of these shitty "starterpacks" on reddit to make fun of people with problems for upvotes. I eat healthy, exercise, don't use drugs, and all that good stuff but still have trouble sleeping and get depressed when the weather is hot, when I have nightmares, or am in pain from one of the multiple physical disabilities I have. Reddit can be a shitty place.
>>
>>9363494
I like working at night, I work from 2pm to 10pm Monday to Friday.
I get time in the morning to ride my bicycle down to the river and do some fishing while I have my morning coffee, ride past the shop on the way home and pick up some groceries while most other people are at work.
Normally end up going to bed around midnight.
I don't get to socialise on Friday night with friends which can be a bummer.
>>
>>9360088

Nice meme,

As some one who partakes in all of those things, lack of exercise is the big one.

Eat a burger, run 5 miles, smoke some stoges, drink 4 beers, do some push ups, jack off, eat another burger, sleep like a baby. Still within TDEE. Repeat.

But seriously, just exercise.
>>
>>9362773
Depression is not a chemical imbalance, that's been debunked. Its much more complex than that. At the end of the day there's a good chance its simply genetic and those genetic predispositions drive people to all those things in the OP, contradictory to the outdated psychoanalytic approach suggesting the reverse.
>>
>>9362777

>What are some good foods that will help your mental health?

A balanced diet with Meats & proteins.

>Why?

Meats & proteins provide tryptophan.

>What's tryptophan?

It's literally a building block for drugs your body produces to make you "happy" or give you a feeling of "well being."

> Do you need tryptophan to be "happy?"

According to several research studies, the main reason Vegans and some vegetarians are constantly depressed is a lack of proper amino acids like tryptophan.

> So vegans are literally making themselves mentally unhappy and angry because they lack the proper amino acids?

Yes, this is why vegans are so miserable and bitter all the time.
>>
>>9364776

> To ingest the same amount of Tryptophan in meats needed to produce Seretonin, a Vegan would would need to eat 3.2 pounds of Nuts per day.

This isn't even controversial or worth debating. Meats provide many amino acids required to make chemical drug cocktails in your brain like Seretonin; drugs that are essential to your feeling "happiness."

Amino acids that you don't get from daily vegan meals and need to supplement with pills (which still come from animals anyways).

>>
>>9367117
I don't think smoking weed itself leads to depression, but it can lead to social isolation if you often smoke alone. Everything else pales in comparison and so you just end up smoking alone all the time, and eventually that stops being very enjoyable, it's still better, but only because your baseline becomes so low. It also picks your friends for you, if smoking is the way you can relate to people. Lots of people, especially girls, are really turned off by it.

t. smoke alone every day for years

Smoking can be really healthy if it's occasionally to destress, or to make something great even better, like going to the beach or a gig, but its not good for a neet life. It makes the hole to climb out of much deeper.

>>9367117
Is the idea that substances affect different people differently really such a difficult concept to grasp for you?

Also, I'm pretty sure you're confusing "correlation" with "causation." OP's pic never explicitly states that weed CAUSES depression, it merely lays out a few potential correlations: for example, being awake at 4.15am will not cause depression, but a continued lack of decent sleep will.

Is your 7th grade education keeping up with all this?
>>
>>9367166
>Also, I'm pretty sure you're confusing "correlation" with "causation." OP's pic never explicitly states that weed CAUSES depression, it merely lays out a few potential correlations: for example, being awake at 4.15am will not cause depression, but a continued lack of decent sleep will.

So not potato skin volcanos?
>>
>>9360088
Green vegetables, and not just iceberg lettuce.

Broccoli, green beans, baby bok choy, spinach, stuff like that.
>>
I can't speak to anyone's particular mental state, but I've always viewed intake in terms of portion.
Not amount as much as variety. For me personally, I make sure to eat the following in some form each day:
Spinach, greek yogurt, sweet potatoes, ginger, avocado, beets, and brown rice. That is the baseline.
Alternates include peas, zucchini, artichoke, (probably guessed I'm a vegetarian) and tempeh.
No bread, no pizza, no crackers, no sandwiches. FILLER. And not even doing anything for you.

Food is one side; now comes fluids.
WATER. Filtered if possible. You'd be surprised how far being fully hydrated goes.
OJ, or anything 100% non-concentrate that you like. I like Silk as well...that's just me.
Also low-sodium soup; or something you might make yourself. Goes a long way.

Lastly, movement:
I don't mean that like a prick; I just mean putting in the good work of getting your body moving.
The body needs stimulation to process what you put in; if you just sit there, constipation will be more likely.
It could be anything...and there's always things to be done. Raking leaves, cleaning, what not.
Energy lost means energy gained in terms of what you've put in. The process is cyclical.

If you make this a habit, you'll notice a difference mentally. Health is multi-layered. No pill will solve the problem.
On every level you must be forward moving and aware. In that respect, there is no other option--you have to put in
the work. And it begins with you, and your awareness accordingly. Your body is chemistry; input output. Input better
options and the output will inevitably be better.
>>
>>9360088
Nuts, not the extremly fatty ones like cashews or peanuts.
Go for Almonds WITH THE SKIN on, hazelnuts and the like.
Buy whole grain pasta and brown rice, fills you up more and more fibers and shit.
Lots of green veggies. Sweet potatoes are extremly healthy and filling too.
Try and cut out as much sugar as you can, fucking sugar is the anti christ.
Sweeten your shit with honey.
>>
>>9364814
>But seriously, just exercise
Nope. Not exercising is just about the only thing on that list that applied to me, so my girlfriend and I got gym memberships and go 4-5 times a week. It made me feel better for about a month or two, but now that it's just become another part of the routine of my life, I've come to hate it.

>>
>>9360990
Wow, so you were retarded instead of depressed all along. Meanwhile, some people happen to have real problems.
>>
>>9367485
>No pill will solve the problem.

This is a pretty good rule of thumb, and most psychiatrists will tell you the same thing. They can help but they aren't enough on their own. Your state of mind is the physical state of your brain, which is affected by the condition of the rest of your body. This leads to a vicious cycle where unhealthy living contributes to mental illness, and mental illness further reinforces negative behavior. The most important thing about medication is that it can help someone break out of this cycle and improve their overall social and material conditions, though for some people who are truly fucked (recurrent serious depression and the like) it can be helpful for them to stay on the medication permanently.

The problem is a lot of people just start taking the pills and make no further attempts to alter their behavior or environment.

I don't think and theory suggests it is purely genetic. Also the idea that it is an imbalance wasn't debunked because it was never really the theory it was just something they said to sell SSRIs the current model is the diathesis-stress model. Cognitive behavioral therapy suggests that the diathesis for depression is a poorly adapted belief structure.
