A lot of a business's orders may be carry out and they often have to hire someone specifically for that job. I am one of those people. I have to pack up your orders securely while there might be 10 of them on the line, refill sauces, packing materials, answer the phone. All the while paying attention to the fact that you need "light curry" in your fried rice or exactly 3 packets of mustard for minimum wage. Yes, fast food employees rarely make more than that for just as much work, but they often can't accept tips anyway.
Also, no more than a 10% tip is expected. But more is appreciated.
Tips are the difference between not being able to pay my rent every month and being somewhat comfortable while in school. 12$ an hour because 2/3 of people tip a couple dollars is a whole hell of a lot better than 7.25.
I feel this issue often falls under the category of there being two types of people: those who have worked food service, and those who haven't. If you have, you know how much it fucking blows and how much tips mean. A couple dollars is not going to make or break you, but possibly raising someone's wage to livable is definitely going to make their life a whole lot easier.

I'm not going to give you money the owner should be paying you out of his greedy ass pockets. Nothing personal against you, it's the owner. Take it up with him, organize your fellow workers and strike or attempt collective bargaining. Sorry.

I always tip because I work retail. My job is shit and I have to deal with assholes all the time, but at least my boss pays me more than minimum wage. I have a lot of friends in food service so I know how it is. Respect friend.

You have a point, but it's not like that kind of thing happens over night.

Food service had sucked for ages and people have been complaining for ages, if someone organizes a strike others will follow, you could start it all anon

I've worked in food service for years, and, if anything, it's the reason why I don't tip anymore. Tips were always a treat, sure, but I've never encountered more shitty, entitled people than my coworkers that always expected tips and made "jokes" about fucking with people's food and such.

Notice how the people advocating for a higher minimum wage are never tipped workers. It's because they already regularly make more than minimum wage, and they're scared that an actual increase in wages will discourage people from continuing to participate in the tipping scam.

Have you considered a better-paying job? Get my fucking order right if you want a tip.
Otherwise, I'm not going to pick up the tab your employer refuses to pay. I'm not paying more than the website says I need to.
