Tragically they go overlooked in favor of apples. OP is right.

I planted some winter pear trees on my dad's land several years ago (along with peaches and plums.) The pear fruit ripens between October and January in our region of the country and it makes delicious preserves along with fresh fruit for snacking or deserts like cobblers. This is all to say nothing of the deer that love these pears which are delicious themselves.

All aboard the fruit tree train. All across suburbia families plan inconsequential trees when they could be planting lovely fruit trees instead. It's a terrible shame.
